[Bug 1855420] Re: dmicheck Type 41 result doesn't reflect real condition

2019-12-16 Thread Alex Hung
It seems that SMBIOS doesn't ask type instance to start from 1 - it was
only an example.

==
Device Type Instance is a unique value (within a given onboard device type)
used to indicate the order the device is designated by the system. For example,
a system with two identical Ethernet NICs may designate one NIC (with higher
Bus/Device/Function=15/0/0) as the first onboard NIC (instance 1) and the other
NIC (with lower Bus/Device/Function =3/0/0) as the second onboard NIC (instance
2).
==

The "Status" field is probably match to real hardware - in this case,
the ethernet @ 00:1f.6, and therefore "disabled" should be fine.

The missing one, however, is "r8169 :02:00.0". As this is also an
onboard device, it deserves a type 41 itself. An example is also below:

Handle 0x2901, DMI type 41, 11 bytes
Onboard Device
Reference Designation: Realtek R8169
Type: Ethernet
Status: Enabled
Type Instance: 1
Bus Address: :02:00.0

Note the type instance must be unique (and therefore 1, not 0) and "Bus
Address" should match to actual address 2:00.0.

Finally, OEM/ODM should modify "To Be Filled by O.E.M." to something
real; however, this is minor.

[Bug 875676] Re: Backing up fails with 'IOError CRC check failed'.

2019-12-16 Thread saywot
Sooo...
 I ran Deja Dup from a terminal

The only output was

"Gtk-Message: 16:48:40.229: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
 Gtk-Message: 16:48:40.244: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"

until (I'm thinking inevitably)

Failed to read /tmp/duplicity-gjzzxxla-tempdir/mktemp-wkx9qah0-2: (, OSError('CRC check failed 0x940ae478 != 0xf0f01999',), )

But here's a thing.
There isn't a /tmp/duplicity-gjzzxxla-tempdir

Still, I'm sure that back-up software is a priority and that there'll be
some sort of a fix this year.

You'd have to be an idiot to do a re-install without a working back-up
wouldn't you ?

[Bug 1856653] [NEW] CVE-2019-0154 caused major power problem, pls backport maintainers fix

2019-12-16 Thread Tim Richardson
Public bug reported:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/issues/614
the fix released as CVE-2019-0154 increases idle power consumption on intel
i915 6th gen and later.
That's because the GPU does not enter RC6 any more.

For example, my Thinkpad P50 (6th gen) idles at 9w with current 5.3 kernels.
Previously, it idled at 5W.
Effects on a T480 (8th gen) are less dramatic but still significant.

5.5RC1 has the maintainer's second pass at this, which restores RC6
idling

The maintainer's patch for 5.3 is here:
 https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/issues/614#note_366057

I have applied this to tag Ubuntu-hwe-5.3.0-25.27~18.04.2 and it builds.
I am testing it now.

I think it would be very helpful to backport this if you can.

[Bug 1855825] Re: When connecting to wifi with the proposed linux-oem kernel , the system hangs

2019-12-16 Thread You-Sheng Yang
Hi Lynn,

As already commented in #17, backport-iwlwifi-dkms doesn't exist in
Bionic officially yet. No matter where do you install it from, they have
been fixed either in released or in proposed channel. We're to land a
fixed version of backport-iwlwifi-dkms into Bionic in bug 1856024. No
more things to do here.

[Bug 1856603] Re: fstrim on nvme / AMD CPU fails and produces kernel error messages

2019-12-16 Thread Seth Bromberger
Update: I built a 5.3.10 kernel with the patch suggested in the
infradead link (patch located at
http://git.infradead.org/nvme.git/patch/530436c45ef2e446c12538a400e465929a0b3ade?hp=400b6a7b13a3fd71cff087139ce45dd1e5fff444)
and the errors went away; fstrim is working properly:

seth@elemental:~$ sudo fstrim -v /
/: 758.3 GiB (814159003648 bytes) trimmed

and no kernel errors.

Could this be merged soon? Thank you.

[Bug 1856596] Re: gnome-shell freezes and must be killed from console

2019-12-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. Next time the problem happens instead of
killing gnome-shell with signal 9, please use:

  kill -ABRT ...

That should create a crash dump that is a snapshot of the freeze. Please
then upload it using the following command:

  ubuntu-bug /var/crash/YOURFILE.crash

Please be careful to not attach crash files to this bug report. Only use
the 'ubuntu-bug' command.

Separately, I notice you have a number of extensions installed:

'dash-to-d...@micxgx.gmail.com'
'vit...@corecoding.com'
'windowoverlay-ic...@sustmidown.centrum.cz'
'openweather-extens...@jenslody.de'
'sound-output-device-choo...@kgshank.net'
'suspend-button@laserb'

Please UNINSTALL all of them (don't just disable), then restart and tell
us if the bug reoccurs.

[Bug 1853199] Re: Ctrl + c (copy) anywhere some times crashes gnome session

2019-12-16 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. The only information I can get from those is that in one of them
the login screen crashed due to:

malloc_printerr (str=str@entry=0x7fa4a99a6148 "free(): corrupted
unsorted chunks") at malloc.c:5332

AFAIK this does not generally happen to other people so there might be
something unusual about your system. Please check that you don't have
any Gnome Shell extensions installed, other than those provided by
default with Ubuntu. If you do have any such extensions then please
uninstall them all and retest. We need extensions to be fully
uninstalled because even when disabled they can interfere with the
system.

Also, please keep collecting and sending us more crash reports since we
don't yet have a reliable pattern or a crash report that's clean enough
to formally track.

[Bug 1766945] Re: (EFI on top of legacy install) choosing "replace" or "resize" options in partitioning may lead to an install failure

2019-12-16 Thread Saul Aguiar
I have a multi-partition legacy (BIOS) system. About a year ago, when
prompted by software loader, I upgraded from 16 LTS to 18.04 LTS
Performed several updates after that (as prompted) but something went
wrong with a systemd file (but system still worked well for many
months). Recently, I was prompted to do a partial update and it
completed happy but, next time I re-booted (selected version through
Grub as always have) and got a bunch of red exclamation points and
something about software frozen and system would not complete boot. On
Dec 13, 2019 I downloaded image of 18.04 from main Ubuntu page and
created bootable USB. This allowed me to create my user account and
password in order to back up my user data, but the "refreshed" 18.04.3
image still will not boot up via the original Grub (only runs with the
newly-created boot USB plugged in). Downloaded the 19.04 image on 12/15
from the primary Ubuntu page, over-wrote the bootable USB, and tried to
install it over top of 18.04.3 image and get complaints about EFI boot
will not work (of course, since my hardware is BIOS and not EFI).
Someone here suggested creating a 200 MB EFI partition anyway and that
will be my next step. At the moment the installer shows first a
partition for /sda (I take this to be the location of the original boot
software), followed by an ext4 partition named /sda4 (where an old
mythbuntu resides), followed by an ext4 partition /sda6 (where the 18.04
or 19.04 image is loaded, followed by /sda5 partition designated swap.

So, this bug is DEFINITELY NOT fixed.

I am a software engineer and would like to learn more about booting
Ubuntu. Can anyone suggest a good place in the Ubuntu document archive
to begin familiarization?

[Bug 1855354] Re: lb chroot_archives eats apt preferences files

2019-12-16 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
Verification complete on trusty:

1) I started two trusty ubuntu-base livefs builds:

$ start-livefs-build
--livefs=~mwhudson/+livefs/ubuntu/trusty/docker-ubuntu-core-tests --pocket
Updates --metadata project='"ubuntu-base"' --metadata image_format='"plain"'
https://launchpad.net/~mwhudson/+livefs/ubuntu/trusty/docker-ubuntu-core-tests/+build/195865
$ start-livefs-build
--livefs=~mwhudson/+livefs/ubuntu/trusty/docker-ubuntu-core-tests --pocket
Proposed --metadata project='"ubuntu-base"' --metadata image_format='"plain"'
https://launchpad.net/~mwhudson/+livefs/ubuntu/trusty/docker-ubuntu-core-tests/+build/195866

2) When they'd built, I downloaded the artifacts:

$ wget -O ubuntu-base-trusty-updates.tar.gz
https://launchpad.net/~mwhudson/+livefs/ubuntu/trusty/docker-ubuntu-core-tests/+build/195865/+files/livecd.ubuntu-base.rootfs.tar.gz
$ wget -O ubuntu-base-trusty-proposed.tar.gz
https://launchpad.net/~mwhudson/+livefs/ubuntu/trusty/docker-ubuntu-core-tests/+build/195866/+files/livecd.ubuntu-base.rootfs.tar.gz

3) I tested them using this silly script:

mwhudson@anduril:~/tmp/trusty-test$ cat test.sh
#!/bin/bash -eux

cleanup () {
for m in dev/pts dev proc sys; do
umount chroot/$m
done
rm -rf chroot
}
trap cleanup EXIT

mkdir chroot
tar -C chroot -xf "$1"
for m in dev dev/pts proc sys; do
mount --bind /$m chroot/$m
done
cp /etc/resolv.conf chroot/etc
chroot chroot apt update
chroot chroot apt install -y socat
$

The output is rather verbose so it's here:
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Mgf6qh2RGx/ but the upshot is that the
attempt to install socat failed with the -updates tarball and succeeded
with the -proposed tarball.
