_SB.WTBT._HID = "PNP0C14"
_SB.AMW0._HID = "PNP0C14"
_SB.AMW4._HID = "PNP0C14"
_SB.AMW2._HID = "PNP0C14"

So this system does have duplicated WMI devices, and they have different
functions. However, like what I said, WMI is not really a part of ACPI
specification, but a Microsoft specific standard. So there is no enough
information to know how do deal with these duplicated WMI devices.

[Bug 1860535] Re: Disable ECKD Thin Provisioning to prevent data loss

2020-02-12 Thread Frank Heimes
@kmously sorry to not coming back earlier to that
I actually already did a verification some days ago when I setup a fresh LPAR
with Eoan and having proposed enabled.
Since the patch/backport disables thin provisioning it's a regression test
what's needed to see if something else got accidentally harmed.
For a different ticket I had to recompile a patched kernel (incl. headers,
etc.) and everything worked fine and I didn't faced any issue.
Today in my morning I setup a z/VM guest on top with Eoan, enabled proposed,
and updated also there to kernel 5.3.0-40 and explicitly wrote file crossing
track boundaries and everything was fine (like expected, since ECKD thin
provisioning was not active - and can't be activated anymore with that kernel,
since the code was revoked).
Hence I successfully verified the Eoan proposed kernel (and with that adjusting
the tags).

2020-02-12 Thread Taihsiang Ho
Hi, I could not reproduce this issue. We may need more information to
look into it. You may:

- Press "Go Back" button during any stage of the installation.
- Select "Execute a shell"
- You will be running "ash". Please provide more information over the shell.
For example, please paste the output message of the following commands: "uname
-a", "lsb_release -a", "df -h", "mount", and "find /boot/efi/EFI".

Besides, if possible, you may tell us how you setup your pxe server, and
which efi binary you did use to boot over pxe. It should help look into
your issue. We will appreciate your further information.

[Bug 1862822] Re: init_on_alloc=1 causes big performance regression for ZFS

2020-02-12 Thread Matthew Ahrens
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected bionic uec-images

** Description changed:

Apologies if this is not the right forum to raise this concern. If not
please point me to a better place to have this discussion.

The 5.3 linux kernel added a new feature which allows pages to be zeroed
when allocating or freeing them: init_on_alloc and init_on_free. The
init_on_alloc flag is enabled by default on the Ubuntu 18.04 HWE kernel.

  Linux kernel commit:

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/6471384af2a6530696fc0203bafe4de41a23c9ef

ZFS allocates and frees pages frequently (via the ABD structure), e.g.
for every disk access. The additional overhead of zeroing these pages is
significant. For example, I measured a ~40% regression in performance of
an uncached "zfs send ... >/dev/null". While this is a specific
workload, this is a general problem because whenever we read from disk
we are going to allocate pages, unnecessarily zero them, and then
immediately fill them with the data from disk.

I don't see any mechanism for ZFS to request that pages *not* be zeroed
  when they are allocated.

This performance regression has been noted by users of ZFS on Ubuntu:
  https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/issues/9910

I'd like to request that the default in Ubuntu be changed to
init_on_alloc=0, so that users of ZFS on Ubuntu do not experience this
  performance regression.

(FYI, my employer, Delphix, has worked around this by changing the
default in our product, but my concern is that the vast majority of
Ubuntu users will simply experience this as "Ubuntu HWE is much slower
  than before".)

[Bug 1855469] Re: gnome-shell lags on wayland

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This bug is closed for now because the information requested in comment
#2 was not provided.

I'd like to note though, that if you find 'swapoff -a' helps then that's
an indication your system was experiencing a memory leak. For some
reason Ubuntu is better able to deal with those situations when swapping
is disabled. But it doesn't mean the kernel's swapping behaviour is the
main issue...

If you would like to continue discussing this bug then please:

 (a) Provide the information requested in comment #2; and

 (b) Reproduce the lag situation again and while it is happening run:

ps auxw --sort -rss > allprocesses.txt

and then attach the file 'allproceses.txt' here.

I'm not sure Kelvin's patch is to blame. I think it's just exposing a

[Bug 1863044] [NEW] qla2xxx no longer detects LUNs with 4.15.0-74+ on IBM BladeCenter

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel Axtens
Public bug reported:

We have an IBM BladeCentre Hx5 with a number of blades running Ubuntu
18.04.3. Storage is attached over Fiber Channel.

They all boot fine with 4.15.0-72 - the qla2xxx detects all the LUNs. On
4.15.0-74 and 4.15.0-76, the qla2xxx driver loads but the LUNs are not
detected. This breaks the boot. rescan-scsi-bus.sh is also unable to
find the LUNs. Reverting to the 4.15.0-72 kernel works.

lspci reports:

[Bug 1854842] Re: mlx5_core reports hardware checksum error for padded packets on Mellanox NICs

2020-02-12 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Mohammad,

Can you please test the 4.15.0-88-generic kernel in -proposed again? The
SRU cycle will end in the next few days, and this bug needs to be
verified if at all possible.

To the kernel team:

The two commits:
net/mlx5e: Rx, Fixup skb checksum for packets with tail padding
net/mlx5e: Rx, Fix checksum calculation for new hardware

Were submitted and accepted into upstream -stable versions 4.19.76 and
5.0.10 for the first, and 5.1.21 and 5.2.4 for the second commit. They
were dropped from bionic stable updates because each commit required
backporting, which I have completed for this SRU.

If Mohammad does not reply before tomorrow, I will mark this bug as
verified, on the basis that these commits were marked for upstream
-stable and I believe they have been backported correctly. I have done a
basic smoke test on 4.15.0-87-generic, but I do not have access to
Mellanox NICs to test myself.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 1853638] Re: BCM57416 NetXtreme-E Dual-Media 10G RDMA Ethernet device seems to be dropping data

2020-02-12 Thread Nivedita Singhvi
Additional observations.

MAAS is being used to deploy the system and configure
the bond interface and settings.

MAAS allows you to specify which is the primary interface, with
the other being the backup, for the active-backup bonding mode.
However, it does not appear to be working -it's not passing along
a primary primitive, for instance, in the netplan yaml or otherwise
resulting in this being honored (still need to confirm).

MAAS allows you to enter a mac address for the bond interface,
but if not supplied, by default it will use the mac address of
the "primary" interface, as configured.

MAAS then populates the /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml, including
a macaddr= line with the default.

netplan then passes that along to systemd-networkd.

The bonding kernel, however, will use as the active interface
whichever interface is first attached to the bond (i.e., which
completes getting attached to the bond interface first) in the
absence of a primary= directive.

The bonding kernel will, however, use the mac addr supplied
as an override.

So let's say the active interface was configured in MAAS to be
f0, and it's mac is used to be the mac address of the bond,
but f1 (the second port of the NIC) actually gets attached
first to the bond and is used as the active interface by the
bond.

We have a situation where f0 = backup, f1 = active, and bond0
is using the mac of f0. While this should work, there is a
potential for problems depending on the circumstances.

It's likely this has nothing to do with our current issue, but
here for completeness. Will see if we can test/confirm.

[Bug 1862910] Re: gnome-shell leaking memory

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
> I installed appimagelauncher [1] some time ago and if I disable the
daemon and reboot then it seems the memory leak is no more.

Yes, please verify that. It's hard to imagine how that's relevant to
gnome-shell's memory usage, but one theory is that it is periodically
triggering code execution in gnome-shell that a default system would not
experience. This could happen via dbus interfaces, or by repeatedly
changing the set of installed apps. That would still be a gnome-shell
bug, but not a common one...

> I did already have show seconds set, I have now tried without and it
doesn't seem to make a difference

Can you please check that again, without show-seconds? That was my
strongest suspicion of why the leak continues on a desktop that's not
being used.

[Bug 1862792] Re: gnome-shell always crash after boot

2020-02-12 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks, but unfortunately none of those are usable, for a variety of
reasons. Obviously we should ignore the crashes in google-chrome-stable
and cups-browsed here since this bug report is about gnome-shell
crashing. But the gnome-shell crashes are not usable for reasons like:

---

Invalid core dump: BFD: warning: /tmp/apport_core_getbxb5s is truncated:
expected core file size >= 1186811904, found: 249229312

---

You have some obsolete package versions installed. Please upgrade the
following packages and check if the problem still occurs:

usb-modeswitch

---

Please keep collecting crash reports as one of them should eventually be
useful. Please also try uninstalling these:

'dash-to-pa...@jderose9.github.com',
'sensory-percept...@harlemsquirrel.github.io',
'alternate-...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'openweather-extens...@jenslody.de'

We need extensions to be uninstalled because we find a large number of
bugs are caused by extensions. And just disabling a buggy extension is
not enough to stop it from interfering.

That is because the ucm is not loaded successfully.

please change cset "name='Headset Mic Boost Volume' 1" to cset

reboot.

If it doesn't work, please upload log of "pactl list cards", maybe your

:( What else can I try? I'm kind of assuming after talking to the
kernel team that this kernel from the proposed PPA has the fix, it might
not. Would love to verify

[Bug 1862840] Re: [Bionic] i915 incomplete fix for CVE-2019-14615

2020-02-12 Thread Tyler Hicks
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

Gregory Herrero reported that the proof-of-concept for CVE-2019-14615
indicates that the information leak is not fixed in the Bionic 4.15
  kernel as indicated by USN-4255-1:

   https://usn.ubuntu.com/4255-1/

This only affects Ubuntu's 4.15 kernel series. Xenial (4.4), Disco
(5.0), Eoan (5.3), and Focal (5.4) are not affected by this incomplete
  fix issue.

I've verified this by testing each Ubuntu release with the proof-of-
concept. I then tested vanilla 4.15 with commit bc8a76a152c5
("drm/i915/gen9: Clear residual context state on context switch")
applied, which is the fix for CVE-2019-14615, and verified that the
proof-of-concept showed that the info leak was still possible. I then
tested vanilla 4.16 with commit bc8a76a152c5 applied to verify that the
proof-of-concept showed that the info leak was fixed.

After bisecting changes to the DRM subsystem as well as the i915 driver,
it looks like commit d2b4b97933f5 ("drm/i915: Record the default hw
state after reset upon load") as well as its prerequisites are necessary
to fully fix CVE-2019-14615 in 4.15 based kernels.

  [Test Case]

A proof-of-concept for CVE-2019-14615 became available once the issue
was made public. It can be found here:

   https://github.com/HE-Wenjian/iGPU-Leak

  Steps to use the proof-of-concept:

   $ git clone https://github.com/HE-Wenjian/iGPU-Leak.git

   # In one terminal
   $ cd iGPU-Leak/demo/SLM_Leak/
   $ ./run_victim.sh

   # In another terminal
   $ cd iGPU-Leak/demo/SLM_Leak/
   $ ./run_attacker.sh

   # In the terminal running run_attacker.sh, ensure that all data dumped
   # to the terminal is zeros and that there is no non-zero data. You'll
   # have to closely monitor the script for a minute or so to ensure that
   # the information leak is not possible.

  [Regression Potential]

- TODO
+ High as the changes are complex in comparison to the typical SRU.
+ However, the bulk of the change is to the initialization stages of the
+ driver and we're just pulling back changes that landed in 4.16-rc1 to
+ our 4.15 kernel. I don't see any later Fixes tags that reference the
+ needed commits.
