2020-04-15 Thread Chris Guiver
I've restarted test again... Floppy was inserted so it provided the
/dev/fd0 option, however I selected /dev/sda...

At final calamares install summary screen, it's reported "Install boot
loader on /dev/fd0" even though that was NOT selected. I've ejected
floppy but will let install run

[Bug 1873166] [NEW] Consider splitting check_rpc into a separate package

2020-04-15 Thread Barry Price
Public bug reported:

There are situations in which the check_rpc utility is required, but in
which the user does not wish to also gain an rpc daemon running as root,
particularly given LP:1687930 (and perhaps LP:1430181).

Separating out the check_rpc utility into its own package seems the
simplest way to address this.

[Bug 1845797]

2020-04-15 Thread jon.reeve
This issue persists even after the latest (March 2020) BIOS update from
Lenovo. I posted about this here on the Lenovo forums:

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/After-latest-
BIOS-update-audio-not-working-on-Yoga-C930/m-p/5009564

Is our only hope getting the Lenovo BIOS devs to release a fix? Can we
fix this in the BIOS ourselves?

I rate the probability of ever hearing from Lenovo about this at around
0%.

2020-04-15 Thread Chris Guiver
When Lubuntu is booted on same box without floppy in drive, calamares
does NOT list the /dev/fd0, it cannot be selected and it operates as
expected (letting me select only hdd partitions)

Inserted floppy again & restarting Lubuntu daily..
it seemed to be endlessly looping (>680 seconds at front screen in counter when
I noted debug option bottom left of calamares & started exploring there.. the
end crash was likely caused by me pressing crash option

`sudo -E calamares` -d will be uploaded in next comment from box

[Bug 1873138] [NEW] monitoring-plugins-standard installs rpcbind via recommends

2020-04-15 Thread Barry Price
Public bug reported:

The monitoring-plugins-standard package has a long list of recommends:

Recommends: bind9-host | host, dnsutils, libnet-snmp-perl, rpcbind,
smbclient, snmp, libdbi1 (>= 0.8.4), libldap-2.4-2 (>= 2.4.7),
libmysqlclient20 (>= 5.7.11), libpq5

Given that apt-get will install Recommends by default, this means that
any machine with Nagios plugins installed will also end up with a rpc
daemon running as root.

Could rpcbind perhaps be moved to Suggests?

[Bug 1575655] Re: the network indicator shows the wrong status

2020-04-15 Thread suresh saragadam
1) Question Mark ? In the status of Network Manager of Ubuntu Linux even though
Network Get Connected…..!
2) In Ubuntu Linux Wrong Status of the Network Manager
3) Ubuntu Linux - Network Manager Status – Showing “?”
4) why does a question mark ? Appear in the status of Ubuntu Network Manager ….
5) wrong status in the Network Manager Indicator in Ubuntu Linux

This status of Question Mark “?” Sign or a “?” indicator in the Network Manager
Applet despite the network status connected “is not an error in Network
Manager” you need to change the settings of connectivity checking to OFF

How to get rid of that “?” Status in the nm-applet is goto

Goto to Settings/Privacy/Connectivity Checking – and Switch it
off.

[Bug 1873111] Re: Using the desktop entry key NoDisplay prevents a program from being associated with a MIME type

2020-04-15 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1873111/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1873128] [NEW] calamares seems to want to install to ~1920GB 3.5" 1.44MB floppy

2020-04-15 Thread Chris Guiver
Public bug reported:

Lubuntu 20.04 QA-test install on
dell [optiplex] 755 (c2d-e6850, 5gb, amd/ati radeon rv516/x1300/x1550)
testcase: install with existing partition (sda8 is existing /home, sda9 will be
used for /)

Expected :

System has only a single HDD, so I'd expect to select my partitions from
hdd, and not have any options for /dev/fd0

Actual :

The systems seems to want to install to my 3.5" floppy ??
It's a 3.5" 1.44MB one too, but it's reporting ~1920GB??

Detail:

The floppy was only recently enabled in BIOS because of an ask.ubuntu
support request, so prior installs on this box wouldn't have seen the
FDD

I'll look at this when I can.. I'll provide pic & calamares log (haven't
exited or run install yet). The floppy could be corrupted & creating the
issue (it contains some word perfect files from 1994 only; and happened
to be left in drive from ask.ubu support use).

(( Also all play I did with floppy was in 18.04 system as that was what
OP on ask.ubu was using ))

[Bug 1808864] Re: Poor translation of zh_CN gpasswd(1) man page

2020-04-15 Thread LYF
Hello,

Since the file is so large, I only looked over the diff of po/zh_CN.po
that was submitted on Jun 16, 2018 by LionNatsu. Here are a few
suggestions/questions I have:

L862, R855
Link:
https://github.com/shadow-maint/shadow/commit/cba31b52b39e5ad1df2c4f0d9c684bd4615b92e9#diff-464912b277c8ce74ecad8c785c503facR855

The string "display faillog records more recent than DAYS" is better
translated to this: "显示比 DAYS 天更近的登录失败记录". The current translation is
more along the lines of "display faillog records from DAYS ago".

The string "duplicate password entry" was correctly translated to
"重复的密码项" but the updated Chinese translation (in green) is wrong. It
says "duplicate user entry" "重复的用户条目"

The new translation for the string "duplicate shadow password entry",
"重复的用户影子条目" says "duplicate shadow user entry", so it is incorrect. A
correct translation would be "重复的密码影子条目"

What does the notation "$s" mean? What is the purpose?

[Bug 1869809] Re: Brisk Menu Launcher disappears on startup

2020-04-15 Thread Amal Deo
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1724115 ***

I recently installed Inkscape on a new Ubuntu Mate 19.10 install and the
Brisk Menu did crash. I believe that Inkscape is the cause of the Brisk
Menu crash.

Thanks!

[Bug 1873126] [NEW] Calling rmdir() on a resctrl monitor group results in segmentation fault and hangs the system

2020-04-15 Thread Mutong Xie
Public bug reported:

On Intel Xeon processors newer than the E5 v4 family, calling rmdir() on
a resctrl monitor-only group causes a segmentation fault in kernel.
After the segfault many operation will hang including the bug report
command `ubuntu-bug linux`. Even the `reboot` command hangs and a
hardware reset is required to restore the normal state.

Reproduction steps:

1. Confirm that we're on the latest hwe kernel for 16.04
(4.15.0-96-generic for now)

```
$ uname -a
Linux  4.15.0-96-generic #97~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 1 03:03:31
UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
```

2. Confirm that we have a Intel RDT Memory Bandwidth Monitoring capable
CPU (mine is E5-2690 v4)

```
$ lscpu
...
Model name: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2690 v4 @ 2.60GHz
...
```

3. Execute the following command as root to create a resctrl monitor
group

```
# mount -t resctrl resctrl /sys/fs/resctrl
# mkdir /sys/fs/resctrl/mon_groups/test
# ls /sys/fs/resctrl/mon_groups/test
cpus cpus_list mon_data tasks
```

We can see that the monitor group is created normally.

4. Remove the newly-created monitor group, and segfault happens

```
# rmdir /sys/fs/resctrl/mon_groups/test
Segmentation fault
```

Guesses:

I believe that there is a bug in Bionic kernel's upstream stable
patchset 2020-02-26
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1864904). The
corresponding commit is `c9c5f0ce9900a99433bb44e88ccc89665be15a07`
("x86/resctrl: Fix use-after-free due to inaccurate refcount of
rdtgroup"), which puts the free function `free_all_child_rdtgrp()` in
the wrong place.

The commit above fixes a race condition when removing a resctrl control
group. Commit message says `Fix it by moving free_all_child_rdtgrp() to
after kernfs_remove() in rdtgroup_rmdir_ctrl() to ensure it has the
accurate refcount of rdtgrp` but the commit actually moves
`free_all_child_rdtgrp()` to another function named
`rdtgroup_rmdir_mon()`. Additionally, the "backporting notes" section in
the commit message is also confusing. It points out that the function
modified in upstream commit `fa7d949337cc` ("x86/resctrl: Rename and
move rdt files to a separate directory") is related to control group,
but it mentions monitor group related function in stable trees.

Since I'm using the latest HWE kernel for 16.04 which backports Bionic's
kernel patches, I encountered this issue in 16.04.

Fixes and test results:

I moved `free_all_child_rdtgrp()` back to the original function
`rdtgroup_rmdir_ctrl()`, right after `kernfs_remove()` according to the
original commit message, compiled it and booted into the modified
kernel. It turns out that the segfault no longer happens.

I created a patch based on Bionic kernel's master branch. I have no
knowledge about x86 architecture so I'm not sure that whether it is the
correct way to fix the issue. Hopefully someone can have it reviewed and
I will try to sumbit a kernel patch (I have no experience about this
before... sorry about that). Thanks!

Scratch that. Using 'owner' on a root-owned but world readable file is
probably ill-advised in an abstraction. It seems plausible for an
application to do NSS lookup for user/group while running as non-root.

[Bug 1832222] Re: using aakar font reboots printer

2020-04-15 Thread Allan Dyer
Because the Aakar font is part of the fonts-gujr-extra package.
To re-phrase the problem: On certain text input, the Aakar font emits a reset
command to the printer.
In contrast, other non-Latin fonts (e.g. STZhongsong) when presented with Latin
characters gracefully degrade to a default Latin font. Alternatively, it could
be replaced in the output by a "unknown character" symbol, there is even a
Unicode code point for that: U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER used to replace an
unknown, unrecognized or unrepresentable character. That would give a visible
clue to the location of the user's mistake.

[Bug 1873086] Re: sound stutters when playing on a bluetooth receiver

2020-04-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The main fix for Bluetooth audio stutter is one that you already have,
released in pulseaudio 1:11.1-1ubuntu7.1 (bug 405294). People generally
don't report problems since then so any remaining issues are likely to
be hardware-specific or environment-specific.

Please run these commands:

  lsusb > lsusb.txt
  lspci -k > lspci.txt

and then attach the resulting two files.

Please also test with:

  * wifi disabled completely; and
  * using a 5GHz network instead of 2.4GHz

Note that:

 * after you delete ~/.config/pulse you at least need to log out and in
again.

 * even if deleting ~/.config/pulse doesn't work then we should use bug
1866194 still. The workaround is also not confirmed to work in that bug,
but it's the same bug.

[Bug 1873111] [NEW] Using the desktop entry key NoDisplay prevents a program from being associated with a MIME type

2020-04-15 Thread Rhys
Public bug reported:

I wanted to add a MIME type to open Chrome in incognito mode. I copied
the Chrome desktop entry and changed the entries name to "Incognito", I
also changed the execute command to include the "--incognito" launch
parameter. I also edited my mimeapps.list to point towards this new
desktop entry. This all worked fine until I added the "NoDisplay" key to
the desktop entry. The whole point of this key is to allow the use of
MIME types without adding the desktop entry to the apps list however
this doesn't work in the latest desktop LTS release of Ubuntu. I found a
previous report of this issue here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/1270979 however
it was closed with the assumption that is was fixed however clearly that
wasn't the case or maybe it broke again the in mean time I don't know.

[Bug 1817496] Re: Login always shows partitions to be fsck-ed, even after reboot.

2020-04-15 Thread Serge Hallyn
You should be able to manually do

fsck /dev/sda5

If the filesystem on sda5 is listed in /etc/fstab, then sixth fstab
field for that filesystem should be '2'. If it is 0, then indeed it
won't be fsck'd on reboot.

fstab is owned by util-linux, but system bringup belongs to systemd, so
I'm assigning this to the systemd package. However I suspect fstab
lists '0' for the sixth field, and the system is doing what it is told.
