[Bug 1879806] [NEW] Grub installation fails every time.

2020-05-20 Thread Glenn Meyer
Public bug reported:

Installation attempted on an HP Spectre X360 13 inch (2019) laptop.
Multiple attempts all fail, except for the first one, which seemed to
work until I rebooted: Windows 10 booted as if Ubuntu was never
installed. All attempts fail when grub-install is run, whether the
target is the HDD boot record, the Windows Boot Manager partition, the
Ubuntu partition or even the install USB stick partition. FYI there's no
Legacy Support option in this machine's System Configuration Bios tab
(F10). I wouldn't think that would matter, just saying in case I'm
wrong.

[Bug 1879805] [NEW] nzbget not working because of free unrar

2020-05-20 Thread Richard Browne
Public bug reported:

Hi out of the box nzbget on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS doesn't work because of the
unrar version that ships with Ubuntu. In the nzbget log, we get these
errors:

INFOUnrar: unrar: invalid option -- 'y'
INFOUnrar: Try `unrar --help' or `unrar --usage' for more information.
ERROR   Unrar error code: 64

To solve this problem, I needed to 'sudo apt install unrar'.

So I guess nzbget needs to depend on the unrar (non-free) package?

[Bug 1879778] Re: "in future" phrasing in "Remember this in future" is chiefly British; bad localization

2020-05-20 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

You suggest a change to the original string, so it's not a
localization/translation issue, but a plain apport bug.

** Summary changed:

- "in future" phrasing in "Remember this in future" is chiefly British; bad
localization
+ "in future" phrasing in "Remember this in future" is chiefly British; bad
grammar

** No longer affects: ubuntu-translations

[Bug 1879770] Re: Renaming interfaces using *.link file does not work

2020-05-20 Thread Dan Streetman
What's the output of:

$ networkctl status enp3s0

specifically, what's the 'Link File'. Change the name of the interface
if needed, of course.

I am guessing it's "/lib/systemd/network/99-default.link".  That's
because your link file is named "myname123.link", and "m" is after "9",
so 99-default.link matches first (because it matches "OriginalName=*").
If this is the case, try renaming your link file so it's lower
(alphabetically) than 99-, e.g. "50-myname123.link".

Alternately, if networkctl shows your interface link file is
"/run/systemd/network/10-netplan-enp3s0.link", it's because you have it
configured using netplan, which also creates a link file for some
operations (like setting interface name). Check your /etc/netplan/ dir
for *.yaml files.

[Bug 1820063] Re: [Hyper-V] KVP daemon fails to start on first boot of disco VM

2020-05-20 Thread Donald Babcock
I am seeing this on 18.04 Linux 5.3.0-1020-azure VM. Sister VM on same
kernel, same patch level, same host does not see the issue.

I isolated it to a Hyper-V integration service difference between the
issue vm and it's non-affect sibling. The issue reliably appears and
goes away if "data exchange services" under "integration services" are
disabled or re-enabled on the VM. Data Exchange disabled produces the
issue.

Clue was found here https://askubuntu.com/questions/996171/hv-kvp-

[Bug 1870138] Re: svd never finishes

2020-05-20 Thread Mike Miller
This bug appears to be related to how the openblas package is built for
the Ubuntu archive, as compared with the same source built for the
Debian archive.

I can reproduce this bug with libopenblas0-pthread:amd64 version
0.3.8+ds-1 as installed by default from the focal package archive. I can
also reproduce this with libopenblas0-pthread:amd64 version 0.3.9+ds-1
downloaded from the groovy package archive.

However, I *cannot* reproduce this with the same versions of
libopenblas0-pthread:amd64 downloaded from the Debian package archive
and installed on the same Ubuntu system as drop in replacements.

I also can reproduce this if I install the Ubuntu build of
libopenblas0-pthread on a Debian system that is otherwise not affected.

Gdb reports that the library is blocking in the threaded variants of
"DGEMV" (when calling Octave's "eig" or "svd" function) or "DGETRF"
(when calling Octave's "inv" function).

[Bug 1879793] [NEW] Disco update: upstream stable patchset 2020-05-20

2020-05-20 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
   The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
   in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
   demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
   by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
   a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
   stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

[Bug 1765363] Re: prime-select intel is not powering off the nvidia card

2020-05-20 Thread Nishan
Prime select is not turning off the dgpu in Ubuntu 20.04

Laptop: MSI GE40
dGPU: GTX 760m
iGPU Intel HD4600

Driver: Nvidia 440 installed via "Additional Drivers" GUI from default
20.04 repos.

When using "prime-select intel" the iGPU is being used however the dGPU
is still powered on resulting in considerably more power usage and heat
generation.

Installing and loading the bbswitch module and running "echo
"OFF">/proc/acpi/bbswitch" does successfully power down the dGPU
drastically lower power usage.

[Bug 1879087] Re: dbus errors, frequent roaming and unstable connectivity

2020-05-20 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I've uploaded the fix and a stable update, improving the description for
a better testcase would be useful though if you have an idea how to
trigger the issue and test the fix

** Description changed:

+ * Impact
+ extra roaming events are been generated
+
+ * Test case
+ check the wpa_supplicant log, it should have warnings
+ dbus: wpa_dbus_property_changed: no property RoamComplete in object
/fi/w1/wpa_supplicant1/Interfaces/3
+
+ the roaming events should not be too frequent
+
+ * Regression potential
+ check that wifi connection keep working correctly
+
+
+ --
+
  When using this version of wpa_supplicant with my company
  WPA2-Enterprise wireless setup, I'm experiencing far too frequent
  roaming events (even when not moving around) accompanied by hiccups in
  connectivity. I also see these messages in the wpa_supplicant log:

  dbus: wpa_dbus_property_changed: no property RoamComplete in object
/fi/w1/wpa_supplicant1/Interfaces/3
  dbus: wpa_dbus_property_changed: no property RoamTime in object
/fi/w1/wpa_supplicant1/Interfaces/3
  dbus: wpa_dbus_property_changed: no property SessionLength in object
/fi/w1/wpa_supplicant1/Interfaces/3

  Having done a little research, at least the dbus errors seem to be fixed
  by this commit upstream:

https://w1.fi/cgit/hostap/commit/wpa_supplicant/dbus/dbus_new.c?id=23d87687c2428f3b94865580b0d33e05c03e6756

  So I built a version of wpa_supplicant including this particular patch
  and installed on my machine. Apart from solving the dbus errors
  completely, it seems to have had a positive impact on the frequent
  roaming and unstable connectivity as well (I've run for a day with no
  burst of roaming events at all, where they used to happen every few
  minutes most of the time.)

[Bug 1877970] Re: Alt-X keyboard shortcut not defined in LibreOffice 6.4

2020-05-20 Thread Heather Ellsworth
I've verified that the Alt+X behavior is broken in
6.4.3-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 that is currently in the focal archive. And since
I was testing 6.4.4~rc2-0ubuntu1~ppa1 to prepare for the 6.4.4 release,
I went ahead and was able to easily check that indeed the Alt-X behavior
works in 6.4.4. So stand by for the 6.4.4 release to get this fix.

[Bug 1861941] Re: bcache by-uuid links disappear after mounting bcache0

2020-05-20 Thread Ryan Harper
That doesn't explain why they show up sometimes, but not all of
the time.

There are 3 devices in play here.

* The backing device, let's say /dev/vda; this is where we want
  to store the data.
* The caching device, let's say /dev/vdb; this holds the cache.
* The bcache device; this only appears when a backing device is
  detected; via bcache-probe which reads the header on the disk
  and indicates it's a bcache device.

Now, there are a few sequences that we see:

1) make-bcache -b /dev/vda -c /deb/vdb  will create a bcache0
   with the cache and backing dev at the same time and emit the
   CACHED_UUID change event which runs *after*
   60-persistent-storage, and adds the bcache/by-uuid links

2) After a reboot (or if you tear down a bcache0 by stopping them
   in sysfs) we have several scenarios where the 2 real block
   devices are found:

2a) order: backing, bcacheN, caching

In this scenario, vda will run through
60-persistent-storage.rules and blkid will discover
ID_FS_TYPE=bcache, and generates only by-path, by-id links
for the device, 69-bcache.rules will run bcache-register
/dev/vda which informs the kernel that a backing device has
been found.

If the cache device has not yet been handled by udev (we
don't know if a cache device exists, bcache can work
without one) then the kernel will create a bcacheN
device, but without the cache device being present, it will
*NOT* emit a CHANGE event with CACHED_UUID value.

Now when the cache device (vdb) is going through,
60-persistent-storage.rules, blkid will discover the same
settings, TYPE=bcache, generate by-path, by-id symlinks.
Then 69-bcache.rules runs, triggers a bcache-register on vdb
registering the cache device in the kernel and because
the superblock on the backing device specifies the
cache device UUID it used the kernel can bind the cache
device into the correct bcacheN device.

A mainline kernel (no sauce patch) does not emit a CHANGE
event with CACHED_UUID value. Our sauce patch changes
the kernel to emit the CHANGE event with CACHED_UUID
whenever we bind a cache device to an existing bcacheN
precisely so the bcache/by-* links get generated.

2b) order: cache, backing, bcacheN

   Here, when vdb is plugged in, the cache device is registered
   in the kernel, but without a backing device, no bcacheN device
   is created yet.

   Then the backing is probed, as in 2a; the bcache-register command
   will register it with the kernel, and create a bcache0, and
   since the cache device is present, mainline kernels (and ours)
   will emit the CHANGE event with CACHED_UUID

With this in-mind; it appears to me that in the focal case
we're seeing the bcache driver CHANGE event with CACHED_UUID
and then additional change events from the block layer around
the bcache0 device (but not emitted from the bcache driver code)
So I'd like to understand why ... I expect those events to occur
but not before the driver change event.

And maybe that's the race here

The happy path:

  1. udev processing CHANGE on backing device, it's bcache so we register it
  2. kernel bcache driver creates a bcache0 block device (udev ADD event)
  3. udev processing CHANGE on bcache0 device
  4. udev processing CHANGE on cache device, it's bcache so we register it
  5. kernel bcache driver emits CHANGE event with CACHED_UUID
  6. udev processing CHANGE on bcache0 device with CACHED_UUID

The bad path

  1. udev processing CHANGE on cache device, it's bcache so we register it
  2. udev processing CHANGE on backing device, it's bcache so we register it
  3. kernel bcache driver creates a bcache0 block device (udev ADD event)
  4. kernel bcache driver emits CHANGE event with CACHED_UUID
  5. udev processing CHANGE on bcache0 device with CACHED_UUID
  6. udev processing CHANGE on bcache0 device without CACHED_UUID

if the bcache change event occurs
before the block layer change events, then the database does
get clobbered ... but we've an incomplete trace; we should
see pairs of events, one from KERNEL, and then one from UDEV.
We should definitely get a complete capture for this bug.

w.r.t the fix; I've a few concerns:

1) bcache-keep-symlinks relies on /dev/bcache/by-* links to
exist, if they are removed, then the keep won't work.

2) The removal of the /dev/bcache/by-uuid/ happens during
processing of 60-persistent-storage.rules, which will remove the
link before bcache-keep-symlinks can run (it's in
69-bcache.rules)

3) since we cannot rely on the existing links, instead we should
read and parse the bcache superblock devices, much like the one
I put together (and you reminded me I wrote)

[Bug 1864901] Re: [snap] suggestion: alert users when the snap has been refreshed while running

2020-05-20 Thread Nick Grimshaw
> The sleep process will outlive the launcher process at most 60
seconds, after which it will exit.

A problem I'm seeing is that the sleep process is sometimes *blocking*
progression of other scripts e.g. if you pipe the output of a chromium
process to something else:

```
$ snap refresh
All snaps up to date.
$ snap list | grep chromium
chromium 81.0.4044.138   1143  latest/stable
canonical*-
$ time chromium --product-version
81.0.4044.138
real0m0.206s
user0m0.107s
sys 0m0.110s
$ time chromium --product-version | tee /dev/null
81.0.4044.138
real1m0.161s   # <--- !!!
user0m0.122s
sys 0m0.078s
```

I came here from https://github.com/titusfortner/webdrivers/issues/168 as
mentioned in #5, and the situation there is slightly worse, for reasons that
aren't clear to me. That Ruby code is attempting to read the Chromium version
through a pipe, very much like the following code, and this blocks
*indefinitely*, not just for 60 seconds:
```
$ irb
irb(main):001:0> pipe = IO.popen(['chromium','--product-version'])
=> #
irb(main):002:0> pipe.read
 … hangs indefinitely …
```

[Bug 1878541] Re: Grub fails to load kernel from squashfs if mem < 1500mb

2020-05-20 Thread Chris Coulson
I did a bit of digging on this, and it seems to happen because the grub
verifier module reads in to memory the entire contents of any file that
is opened via grub_file_open without the GRUB_FILE_TYPE_SKIP_SIGNATURE
flag or any file which doesn't have a type of GRUB_FILE_TYPE_SIGNATURE
or GRUB_FILE_TYPE_VERIFY_SIGNATURE, so that it can provide the file
contents to the registered verifier modules and provide the verified
contents to the grub file API from memory without having to load it from
disk again (which would obviously be vulnerable to TOCTOU type bugs).

Configuring a loopback device via the loopback command opens the
underlying disk image, which results in grub's verifier code reading the
entire image in to memory. In the case of booting a UC20 recovery
system, the loopback image is the kernel snap squashfs. This doesn't
happen with the UC18 version of grub because it doesn't ship the
verifier module (which is pulled in in UC20 because of the TPM verifier
module. The TPM verifier just calculates a hash of the file contents and
measures it to PCR9).

I'm not sure that passing loopback image files through the verifier
module is a sensible default. The loopback device is just another disk
backend, and grub doesn't pass entire physical disk images through the
verifier. It seems weird that loopback images would be treated
differently, particularly because files opened from the filesystem
within the loopback image will be passed through the verifier.

I tested a local build of grub with the attached patch, and was able to
boot a UC20 recovery kernel via a loop mounted kernel snap squashfs in a
VM with 512MB of RAM. I'm not sure if it's the correct fix for this
though.

Tested. Is present also in the latest drm-tip kernel.

There is something I have found that may help:
If I install Ubuntu 16.04.0, the issue is not present, but once I update
(apt-get upgrade) the problem appears, but there is the interesting detail:
if I start the upgraded 16.04 with the initial kernel, the issue is still
happening, so... Maybe is not a kernel related issue? Or a mix of the
kernel and something else?

[Bug 1865166] Re: undefined symbol: gegl_rectangle_subtract

2020-05-20 Thread Heather Ellsworth
In case anyone else hits this, perhaps this will help...

Another user ran into this very issue on a Debian system but removing
gimp and reinstalling didn't fix the issue.

In order to find the conflicting library, the user removed gimp and it's
dependencies then searched for any remaining libraries to manually
remove:

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge gimp
$ sudo find / -iname "*babl*"
$ sudo find / -iname "*gegl*"
$ sudo find / -iname "*gimp*"

Remove any lingering libraries before re-installing gimp.

[Bug 1864061] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected

2020-05-20 Thread Moritz Ringler
I have had this on 19.10 (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/linux-oem-osp1/+bug/1864061/comments/42) and on 20.04.

Adding "options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0" to the end of
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf has apparently fixed the issue on 20.04
(microphone is still working).

I probably would have tried this earlier if anyone (@Hui Wang ?) had
explained a bit more understandably what the problem is, what the
workaround does, why it fixes the issue, and what the possible side
effects are.

Also the bug description says this issue does not arise in focal
(20.04), which is incorrect in my and several other commenters' cases.

[Bug 1861941] Re: bcache by-uuid links disappear after mounting bcache0

2020-05-20 Thread Balint Reczey
@raharper To my understanding with the change action udev removes the
DEVLINKS which are not still valid. Udev can't tell which links are
still valid in cache/by-*.

The only reason udev knows about the links is because the rule added
them with SYMLINK+= when the dev was created and it is a sane assumption
that when a change action appears with DEVLINKS only the new DEVLINKS
are valid. Hence the fix.

[Bug 1871185] Re: urls in ubuntu-bug's dialog not really clickable

2020-05-20 Thread Brian Murray
** Description changed:

  when ubuntu-bug report suggests filing a bug report directly in
  launchpad for snap packages, the displayed url is clickable but the url
  stops at the first + symbol. see attachment.

- ProblemType: Bug
- DistroRelease: Ubuntu 19.10
+ Test Case
+ -
+ 1) On an Ubuntu 20.04 LTS system run 'ubuntu-bug chromium'
+ 2) Observe a "the problem cannot be reported" message with a link that is not
fully highlighted
+
+ With the version of apport from -proposed the link will be fully
+ highlighted and will be clickable.
+
+ Regression Potential
+
+ The re for what constitutes a url is just improved and the snap dialog is the
only one I can find with a url in it. Given that url highlighting is "broken"
there isn't any potential for regression.

[Bug 1872527] Re: Clipboard doesn't work 100% of the time in Ubuntu 20.04 (in KVM guests)

2020-05-20 Thread Stan
Actually another scenario which is even worse now that I have experienced again
today, is copy/paste is broken within libreoffice, on a VM. It gets to the
point libreoffice hangs completely, and then the VM itself. Eventually the VM
logs me right off. Logging back on, and launching libreoffice, all is well.
In this scenario, best to have done prior saves in libreoffice. Never do the
doc recovery.

I believe this broken scenario is actually triggered by having tried to do
copy/pastes from firefox on another VM to this VM. After this the instance on
libreoffice is somewhat broken, progressing to the hang.
Nasty.

2020-05-20 Thread Rob Robertson
I'm experiencing this issue after upgrading to 20.04 from 19.10. My
headphones are Bose QC35s. Pretty much exactly the same symptoms.
Sound works well from A2DP profile. Sound stops working when HSP/HFP is
selected. Works when A2DP is,again, selected.

Tried deleting the user .config profile.
