[Bug 1875686] Re: Spinner is never seen on boot

2020-06-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There is some threshold below which the spinner doesn't appear, by
design. So it's unclear if there is any bug at all here...

1. Please tell us exactly how long you see the Ubuntu logo on bootup.

2. Please report the issue to the Plymouth developers at:

   https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/groups/plymouth/-/issues

   and then tell us the new issue ID.

** Summary changed:

- Plymouth fails to appear after troubled reboot in which the system nearly
locked prior to the reboot due to high memory pressure and Gnome had to reboot
+ Spinner is never seen on boot

** Changed in: plymouth (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Low

[Bug 1881668] Re: qemu-guest-agent asserts on shutdown, shutdown never reached

2020-06-01 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Interesting Matthias, thanks for the report.

First I was trying to reproduce the case, taking a Focal system with the
version of qemu-guest-agent you reported and then making sure it is
installed, up and running:

● qemu-guest-agent.service - QEMU Guest Agent
 Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/qemu-guest-agent.service; static;
vendor preset: enabled)
 Active: active (running) since Tue 2020-06-02 05:25:04 UTC; 3min 8s ago
   Main PID: 624 (qemu-ga)
  Tasks: 1 (limit: 533)
 Memory: 900.0K
 CGroup: /system.slice/qemu-guest-agent.service
 └─624 /usr/sbin/qemu-ga

Jun 02 05:25:04 focal systemd[1]: Started QEMU Guest Agent.

I was trailing main console, journal, dmesg and htop and passed a shutdown
command through virsh.
  $ virsh shutdown focal --mode agent
The guest almost immediately went down, without issues.

In fact it was so fast that none of the outputs I was tracking spit out
a message like the one you reported.

I was checking the logs afterwards and found:
Jun 02 05:25:04 focal systemd[1]: Started QEMU Guest Agent.
...
Jun 02 05:29:54 focal qemu-ga[624]: info: guest-shutdown called, mode: powerdown

So yes there seems to be an issue in regard to this assertion, but it might be
a red herring for your case of being a hang on shutdown. Things work fine with
it being triggered in - at least - my system.

We'll have to find what is different in yours to then cause the hang.
Would you have a guest-xml of your guest so I can try to spot differences?

[Bug 1881701] [NEW] NVIDIA cards should have set AllowExternalGpus in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf

2020-06-01 Thread Jens Nachtigall
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo Thunderbold 3 Graphics Dock (comes integrated NVIDIA MTX
1050 graphics card), see
https://support.lenovo.com/de/en/accessories/acc500012

*What happened:*

With nvidia-graphics-drivers-440 I just got a black screen. After looink
into the /var/log/Xorg.0.log I noticed:

```
(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): This device is an external GPU, but external
GPUs have not
(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): been enabled with AllowExternalGpus. Disabling
this device
(WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): to prevent crashes from accidental removal.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failing initialization of X screen 0
```

Some googling turned up https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/egpu-and-
intel-nuc-xorg-conf-issues-login-loop-and-hanging/69409/4

After I added the `Option "AllowExternalGpus" "true"` to `Section
"OutputClass"` of `/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf` and
rebooting the card worked.

This is a matter for all eGPUs (external GPUs) that run NVIDIA I guess.
See reports at
https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/fcuhkn/running_thunderbold_3_graphics_dock_nvidia_mtx/
and aforementioned https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/egpu-and-intel-
nuc-xorg-conf-issues-login-loop-and-hanging/69409/4

*Possible solution*

Add this line to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia.conf:
```
Section "OutputClass"
Identifier "nvidia"
MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
# v ADD THIS LINE v
Option "AllowExternalGpus" "true"
# ^ ADD THIS LINE ^^^
ModulePath "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/nvidia/xorg"
EndSection
```

[Bug 1881699] Re: No analog output

2020-06-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The kernel team are tracking a couple of 'sof' audio issues that relate
to 10th gen Intel systems. Also there seems to be a kernel crash in i2c
code that might relate to audio.

Yeah, thanks for the answers.
In that sense it is actually "Fixed" in Xenial and later.
The potential impact to SRU Trusty would be too high, and even less it would
fit under the ESM support that Trusty is in nowadays.

I'll be updating bug states accordingly.

[Bug 1878721] Re: memcached looks for SASL configuration at wrong path /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf (18.04→20.04 regression)

2020-06-01 Thread Anders Kaseorg
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

  memcached 1.5.22 in focal has a bug where it looks for its SASL
  configuration at /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf instead of
  /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf. This causes a memcached setup with
  authentication that was working in bionic to fail in focal.

  The bug was introduced upstream in 1.5.7~3:

https://github.com/memcached/memcached/commit/39151c870c5e598f039714bdb790bd46f614856e
  https://github.com/memcached/memcached/pull/366
  and fixed upstream in 1.6.0~15:

https://github.com/memcached/memcached/commit/6207330c2705fdb5f02de13b99a0d994f7c4f14a

  [Test Case]

  apt-get install memcached libmemcached-tools libsasl2-modules sasl2-bin
  mkdir /etc/sasl2
  echo 'mech_list: plain' > /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf
  echo 'sasldb_path: /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2' >> /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf
  echo bar | saslpasswd2 -p -f /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2 -a memcached foo
  chown memcache: /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2
+ echo '-S' >> /etc/memcached.conf
  systemctl restart memcached
  memcping --servers=127.0.0.1 --binary --username=foo --password=bar

  Succeeds in bionic (with no output); fails in focal with “Failed to ping
  127.0.0.1:11211 UNKNOWN READ FAILURE” or “Failed to ping 127.0.0.1:11211
  WRITE FAILURE”; should succeed with the patch.

  If you want to test alternate locations for the SASL config file, here
  are all four locations that will now work by default:

  • /etc/sasl/memcached.conf/memcached.conf: fails in bionic; accidentally
succeeds in focal; should succeed with the patch
  • /etc/sasl/memcached.conf: succeeds in bionic; fails in focal; should
succeed with the patch
  • /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf: fails in bionic; accidentally
succeeds in focal; should work with the patch
  • /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf: succeeds in bionic; fails in focal; should
succeed with the patch

  [Regression Potential]

  Low risk. The upstream patch is targeted and applies cleanly to 1.5.22.
  It looks for the SASL configuration at both the incorrect and correct
  paths, so even in the (unlikely) event that someone worked around this
  bug by manually creating a configuration file at the incorrect path
  /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf, that will continue to be
  respected.

  If there were to be a regression, it would likely manifest as an
  authentication failure, which clients may display as a read or write
  failure, like the failure mode of the regression being fixed here.

[Bug 1881097] Re: [Thinkpad X1C7][Thinkpad X1C8]F1 and F4 Hotkey LED Light Stays ON/OFF when USB Headset is attached.

2020-06-01 Thread Jason Yen
@Miguel,

Thanks for the report of this issue. This is a known issue/limitation
that the USB peripheral driver is not in sync of the Hotkey LED status.
The Hotkey LED should connect to the audio codec by GPIO.

We will check with the Desktop team to see if we can do some improvement
in the future.

  *spi: spi-dw: Add lock protect dw_spi rx/tx to prevent concurrent calls
  *block: defer timeouts to a workqueue
  *blk-mq: Allow timeouts to run while queue is freezing

The following patch needed some context adjustment:
  *blktrace: Fix potential deadlock between delete & sysfs ops
  *blktrace: fix unlocked access to init/start-stop/teardown
  *cifs: Check for timeout on Negotiate stage
  *cifs: Fix a race condition with cifs_echo_request
  *x86/paravirt: Remove the unused irq_enable_sysexit pv op
  *x86: Fix early boot crash on gcc-10, third try
  *scsi: iscsi: Fix a potential deadlock in the timeout handler

All the other patches applied cleanly.

[Bug 1878721] Re: memcached looks for SASL configuration at wrong path /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf (18.04→20.04 regression)

2020-06-01 Thread Anders Kaseorg
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

  memcached 1.5.22 in focal has a bug where it looks for its SASL
  configuration at /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf instead of
  /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf. This causes a memcached setup with
  authentication that was working in bionic to fail in focal.

  The bug was introduced upstream in 1.5.7~3:

https://github.com/memcached/memcached/commit/39151c870c5e598f039714bdb790bd46f614856e
  https://github.com/memcached/memcached/pull/366
  and fixed upstream in 1.6.0~15:

https://github.com/memcached/memcached/commit/6207330c2705fdb5f02de13b99a0d994f7c4f14a

  [Test Case]

  apt-get install memcached libmemcached-tools libsasl2-modules sasl2-bin
  mkdir /etc/sasl2
  echo 'mech_list: plain' > /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf
  echo 'sasldb_path: /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2' >> /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf
  echo bar | saslpasswd2 -p -f /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2 -a memcached foo
  chown memcache: /etc/sasl2/memcached-sasldb2
+ echo '-S' >> /etc/memcached.conf
  systemctl restart memcached
  memcping --servers=127.0.0.1 --binary --username=foo --password=bar

  Works in bionic; fails in focal with “Failed to ping 127.0.0.1:11211
  WRITE FAILURE”.

  [Regression Potential]

  Low risk. The upstream patch is targeted and applies cleanly to 1.5.22.
  It looks for the SASL configuration at both locations, so if someone
  worked around this bug by creating
  /etc/sasl2/memcached.conf/memcached.conf, that will continue to be
  respected.

[Bug 1093788] Re: X doesn't load after fglrx install

2020-06-01 Thread Michael Tsikerdekis
** Description changed:

  It may be a duplicate but I haven't found anything similar. I am
  reporting here since this is an ubuntu package problem although I have
  tried the official stable and beta releases provided by AMD as well.

  I installed fglrx and then reboot it but the system hangs.

  I also tried using the command aticonfig --initial -f but again no
  effect.

  I entered as root and used startx and here I provide the error log. It
  seems that there is a problem with reading the VBIOS.

[Bug 1881687] Re: Desktop is blank after logging in without a monitor attached

** Description changed:

with Radeon Vega 8)
- I am using lighdm instead of gdm3. My GPU is using the amdgpu driver. I have

+ I am using lightdm instead of gdm3. My GPU is using the amdgpu driver. I have
no specific xorg.conf in place. I am using x11vnc to login and view the
desktop remotely. There is no monitor attached.

  After logging into lightdm's greeter, I am presented with a blank
  desktop with the Focal Fossa background image and a mouse cursor, but no
  other visible interface or windows. There is no menu bar at the top of
  the desktop and no application bar on the left.

  This all works perfectly fine if a monitor is attached before lightdm
  (and thus Xorg) is started.

  If I change the settings at login to use fvwm for my session it works
  fine. This is also the case for Gnome Flashback mode (using metacity).
  But the default of gnome-shell/mutter does not work without the monitor.
  Nor does using Wayland.

[Bug 1861609] Re: [focal] Xorg crashed with assertion failure (usually in a VM) at [privates.h:121: dixGetPrivateAddr: Assertion `key->initialized' failed] and call stack comes from DRIMoveBuffersHelp

2020-06-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks Steve.

Your log file confirms it is this bug:

May 27 11:37:42 lurcher /usr/lib/gdm3/gdm-x-session[2452]: Xorg:
../../../../../../include/privates.h:121: dixGetPrivateAddr: Assertion
`key->initialized' failed.

And the workaround of removing gstreamer1.0-vaapi was also discussed in
bug 1796437 and bug 1745345. But the fact that any package can crash
Xorg is still a Xorg bug, not a bug in that other package.

[Bug 1853199] Re: Ctrl + c (copy) anywhere some times crashes gnome session

2020-06-01 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 968213] Re: Too many icons in Gnome Shell Activities Overview require ellipses

2020-06-01 Thread Pierre Equoy
If that can be of any help, I have the following use case:

In addition to the default Firefox launcher, I created two other
.desktop files:

- One called "Wayland Firefox #1" to run Firefox on Wayland with user
profile #1
- The other called "Wayland Firefox #2" to run Firefox on Wayland with user
profile #2

I'm using a 4k screen (3840×2160), so I have *a lot* of space available
on the screen.

And yet, GNOME uses ellipsis and this is what I get when I look for
"Firefox" in the GNOME Overview screen (see attachment).

I hope this gets fixed soon. Something as simple as a tooltip when
putting the cursor on top of the icon or text would be very helpful
already.

[Bug 1798333] Re: warning "Application already exists, re-requesting properties"

2020-06-01 Thread Takayuki Tokuyoshi
Hi Rosika.

I came here when I was looking for this problem.
It seems that the problem has not been solved yet.
It seems to be a compatibility issue between indicator-application-service and
indicator-multiload.
I decided to suppress the output of syslog and continue to use
indicator-multiload although it is not the root solution.

[Create new rsyslog filter]
> sudo leafpad /etc/rsyslog.d/05-filter.conf
# indicator-application-service(indicator-multiload) disable
if $programname startswith'indicator-appli' and $msg contains'Application
already exists, re-requesting properties.' then stop

[Check rsyslog syntax]
> sudo rsyslogd -N 1
rsyslogd: version 8.32.0, config validation run (level 1), master config
/etc/rsyslog.conf
rsyslogd: End of config validation run.Bye.

[Restart rsyslog]
sudo service rsyslog restart

[Check syslog with tail]
tail -F /var/log/syslog

[Bug 1881684] [NEW] GIMP Python Plugins Won't Run in Ubuntu 20.04

2020-06-01 Thread linux4me
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 and GIMP installed via apt, v. 2.10.18.

To reproduce the problem:

Install a python-based plugin in ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins. In my
case, it was Export Layers (https://github.com/khalim19/gimp-plugin-
export-layers).

Run GIMP from Terminal and you see:

/usr/bin/env: ‘python’: No such file or directory
gimp: LibGimpBase-WARNING: gimp: gimp_wire_read(): error

There is no "Python-fu" menu item on the Filters menu in GIMP even with
a python-based plugin installed in ~/.config/GIMP/2.10/plug-ins, and
that folder listed in GIMP -> Preferences -> Folders -> Plugins.

What I expect to happen is to be able to run GIMP python-based plugins,
and to have the Python-fu menu item on the Filters menu when a python-
based plugin is installed.

The cause seems to be that 20.04 does not provide the package gimp-
python, which is not listed as a dependency or a "suggests" on the
package page for Focal (https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/gimp) though
it is for Eoan.

I did find a workaround. Here are the steps:

sudo apt install python-cairo python-gobject-2
wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/p/pygtk/python-gtk2_2.24.0-6_amd64.deb
wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/g/gimp/gimp-python_2.10.8-2_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i python-gtk2_2.24.0-6_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i gimp-python_2.10.8-2_amd64.deb

Once I did that, GIMP started without any errors and Export Layers works
just fine.

[Bug 1877890] Re: System Hangs when trying to kill a Window

2020-06-01 Thread Frank Krauss
Dear Sirs,
Please feel free to close out this Bug.
The Solution as mentioned above was to run with the 4.15.0 Nucleus.
The problem was probably caused by the fact that my Computer System was 10+
years old
and so it couldn't support the new HWE code in the 5.x Series.
Thank you everyone who took the time to look at this problem.
Yours truly,
Frank Krauss

Re: [Bug 1877890] Re: System Hangs when trying to kill a Window

2020-06-01 Thread Frank Krauss
Dear Sir,

I wish to thank you for your suggestion about using a different
and older Nucleus.
I didn't understand initially about the difference between the
4.x and 5.x Versions.

After I did research on them, I installed the 4.15.0 release.
It has been running perfectly for the past week so I believe
that is the correct solution to my problems of the System hanging
periodically.

I think that maybe it is because my System was built for me over 10+
years ago. It probably dosn't support the HWE code of the 5.x Series.

I will close out this bug and also three other bugs which likewise
have no longer shown up.

Thank you again for your excellent suggestion that has cleared up
these serious problems on my Bionic Beaver System.

Yours truly,

Frank Krauss
