The motd-news script is largely useless for desktop users, as they
rarely login via a text console. It makes more sense for server users.
We can use package dependencies to have the motd-news script enabled on
servers, but disabled on desktops, and still handle upgrades.
It doesn't appear that this was ever accepted upstream. Sent email
requesting an upload of the patch.

This is just a wishlist bug, but the dark mode in Gedit on Ubuntu

Ok, I found the cause: I had the meta package linux-image-generic
installed, but not the metapackage linux-generic. For that reason, when
kernel was upgraded the package with the kernel headers wasn't upgraded,
and that caused the issue (that of course disappeared reverting to the
previous kernel
