Public bug reported:

This bug is already solved upstream
(https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=20338) in 2.32 and has
to be backported.

It indirectly causes systemd-sysusers on 20.04/focal to fail
(https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/6512).

[Bug 1889509] Re: grub boot error : "symbol 'grub_calloc' not found

2020-08-05 Thread J. R.
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1889556 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1889556

Dear all,

I‘m affected, too, on my Lenovo laptop running Kubuntu 18.04. I have two
questions:

1. How can I boot the system from within the Grub rescue prompt? I don‘t
have a live System and can‘t get hands on one for several days.

2. I did reboot my computer right now, and minutes before I did a full
upgrade. From the above conversation one can see that the bug is known
for almost a week. So why is there no emergency patch like a package
that goes back to the last functional version and does a grub reinstall?

Thanks for your help!

Peter

To test kernel 5.8 you need to download all these packages EXCEPT the
"lowlatency" ones:

and then install them all at once:

[Bug 1890418] Re: i915 does not expose vendor-specific extended HDMI timings/modes

2020-08-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The attachment in comment #10 confirms the problem is happening at a low
level in the kernel. Although Xorg could override that if it was smart
enough. In theory you can do it manually but would need to become an
expert at crafting modeline entries to get it working. I don't know how
myself. If that's possible then the data you need is in comment #7.

Obviously Windows 10 demonstrates that it is possible to support this
monitor with this HDMI port. Only Linux does not yet...

As a workaround, if you have a USB-C port and an appropriate
cable/adapter then you might be able to use the DisplayPort on the
monitor. If that works then it should give different timings and might
provide the 4K option... also at 60Hz instead of just 30Hz.

[Bug 1890418] Re: i915 does not expose vendor-specific extended HDMI timings/modes

2020-08-05 Thread Leo Ramakersuca
Regarding HDMI version the spec which I gave a link to claims;
True Resolution : 3840x2160 at 60Hz (DisplayPort) ,3840x2160 at 30Hz (HDMI)

Some while ago I was researching this issue and found a specification
page on the ASUS website which showed two formats for declaring the
frame rate, one extended only to the 1920 value while the other went to
the full 4K. From this I deduced that perhaps windows uses one report
format while linux uses the other. I cannot locate that page now, it may
have been taken down.

2020-08-05 Thread Leo Ramakersuca
Thanks for your work

I just bought and tried a new 4K hdmi cable, with no change. I noticed
that the monitor has TWO inputs, HDMI and HDMI/MHL (it had been plugged
into HDMI) but switching this to HDMI/MHL gave no result.

I am using MATE but the same issue occurs in several flavours of Ubuntu
that I have tried.

I dont know how to try the new kernel at
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8/ as you requested. If I
attempt to ask Gdebi to load the
linux-image-unsigned-5.8.0-050800-generic_5.8.0-050800.202008022230_amd64.deb

fails with unmet dependencies.

[Bug 1890230] Re: arm64 ipxe package isn't an arm64 built

2020-08-05 Thread Rafael David Tinoco
In an arm64 groovy container I got an easy to fix Werror:

include/ipxe/uri.h:178:12: error: taking address of packed member of
‘struct uri’ may result in an unaligned pointer value [-Werror=address-
of-packed-member]

for groovy source code. I believe this "fix" (arm64 support) shall be
easy.

2020-08-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
> I mean that xorg is working and using 50%of the cou without
purpose. When I have just close fire fox.

When this happens please:

1. Run 'top' and check if any other processes are using more than 10%
CPU.

2. Look carefully at your screen and tell us if any part is constantly
changing, like any performance graphs etc.

3. Run:

   sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
   glxinfo > glxinfo.txt

and attach the file 'glxinfo.txt' here.

[Bug 1890418] Re: External monitor will not display to 4k

2020-08-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Actually the problem might just be that the Linux kernel doesn't
understand extended vendor-specific display timings. I've decoded your
monitor's EDID and it reveals that 3840x2160 30Hz is mentioned:

[Bug 1890418] Re: External monitor will not display to 4k

2020-08-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. The file xrandr.txt indeed shows the HDMI connection is limited
to 1920x1080. It also shows that's the "current" mode but it lists no
"preferred" mode, which does support the idea that the monitor can do
higher resolution...

The manufacturer's specs mention that 4K is limited to 30Hz over HDMI.
But that should be fine. It just means the monitor can't do HDMI 2.0.
Most likely the monitor only supports HDMI 1.3 or 1.4.

I think the main problem here is probably the HDMI cable. If it can only
handle HDMI 1.2 or lower then you will not see the 3840×2160 30Hz
option. So I suggest getting a newer cable that supports at least HDMI
1.3.

Why Windows 10 doesn't have the same issue, I don't know.

According to apport logs you had mysql-server installed at:

Commandline: apt install mysql-server-core-8.0

And 2 days later you installed mysql-client-core:

and then:

Start-Date: 2020-08-03 09:31:59

When install the mysql-server-8.0 package the log shows:

SHUTDOWN from user boot. Shutting down mysqld (Version:

After that, it starts again:

/usr/sbin/mysqld: ready for connections. Version:

and then

SHUTDOWN from user . Shutting down mysqld (Version:

it is shutdown again... from that time and on mysql starts receiving a
can't bind socket error message:

likely because the socket opened by the previous instance is still in
FIN_WAIT mode, so you have to wait for it to complete before being able
to respin the instance again to the same port.

2020-08-05 Thread Rafael David Tinoco
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report.

Since it seems likely to me that this is a local configuration problem,
rather than a bug in Ubuntu, I am marking this bug as 'Incomplete'.

However, if you believe that this is really a bug in Ubuntu, then we would
be grateful if you would provide a more complete description of the problem
with steps to reproduce, explain why you believe this is a bug in Ubuntu
rather than a problem specific to your system, and then change the bug
status back to "New".

For local configuration issues, you can find assistance here:

Still a problem in 42.2. No color-theme-* (thus no color-theme-modern

[Bug 1890332] Re: apt update fails on docker arm container 20.04

2020-08-05 Thread Anthony C
The root cause of the problem [is in libseccomp
When][1]. The newer version fixes the problem, but it is not yet available in
Debian's stable repos. There are two way to fix this problem:

**Method 1**

Start the container with `--privileged`. This bypasses docker's security
measures, so it is not recommended.

**Method 2**

Upgrade libseccomp manually. Dowload version from unstable repos (I
tested with 2.4.3-1) [here][2].

Uninstall the current version:

`sudo dpkg --force-all -P libseccomp2`

Install the new version:

`sudo dpkg -i libseccomp2_2.4.3-1+b1_armhf.deb`

[Bug 1890517] [NEW] redis-server crashes with jemalloc error if activedefrag is enabled

2020-08-05 Thread Matthew Hall
Public bug reported:

journalctl output:

Aug 05 18:20:25 mhall-xps redis-server[555286]: *** FATAL CONFIG FILE ERROR ***
Aug 05 18:20:25 mhall-xps redis-server[555286]: Reading the configuration file,

Aug 05 18:20:25 mhall-xps redis-server[555286]: >>> 'activedefrag yes'
Aug 05 18:20:25 mhall-xps redis-server[555286]: active defrag can't be enabled
without proper jemalloc support

I am in the process of debugging this more fully, but it appears that
part of the problem is caused by the difference between the USE_JEMALLOC
and USE_SYSTEM_JEMALLOC flags in the debian/rules and debian/patches for
the package.

When you run ldd on redis-server, it is linked against libjemalloc, but
it seems that the logic in the redis-server binary itself is not
detecting this because the ifdefs involved depend on USE_JEMALLOC being
set and the packaging code is not setting this flag. However, rebuilding
the package from the Ubuntu source with the flag set did not seem to
help.

The latest Debian source on Git is giving me some FTBFS issues, probably
user error because I am not that familiar with using the special Debian
package Git repos and some of the distro specific patches probably did
not get applied:

cc: error: ../deps/lua/src/lua_struct.o: No such file or directory
cc: error: ../deps/lua/src/lua_cmsgpack.o: No such file or directory

...

cc: error: ../deps/jemalloc/lib/libjemalloc.a: No such file or directory

Using the Debian source from the latest unstable tarball, 6.0.6, the
error received changes:

Aug 05 19:43:23 mhall-xps redis-server[595179]: Active defragmentation
cannot be enabled: it requires a Redis server compiled with a modified
Jemalloc like the one shipped by default with the Redis source
distribution

Reading the code some more from there, it appears that, when using the
system jemalloc, as the Redis package is trying to do, because the
system jemalloc does not define the symbol JEMALLOC_FRAG_HINT checked in
zmalloc.h to fully enable defrag support.

By the way, I know the BIOS is outdated (A21 instead of A24), but I
failed to update it via FreeDOS process. (The manual
https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/BIOS_aktualisieren is partially out of date
in this point or I do something wrong, but it's a different issue
anyway, having little to do with this very bug report.)

[Bug 1890467] Re: wmi_bus wmi_bus-PNP0C14:00: WQBC data block query control method not found

2020-08-05 Thread Md Ayquassar
Result of `sudo acpidump > acpi.log` attached.

As for USB issues:

1. I sometimes experience bad contact to my iPhone when I charge it
using a USB port. This seems to be a physically bad contact to me,
however, but I cannot tell for sure.

2. Another issue is that after a USB thumb drive has been unmounted via
the `unmount` command, the written data may be yet in the process of
being transferred, so simply taking the drive out immediately after
unmounting would probably damage the file system or the drive itself or
both. I need to say `udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sdb` and wait for
termination to make sure that the device is really safe to unplug.

As for wake-up, the laptop seldom refuses to wake up and freezes
instead. I simply gave the issue as an example of what goes wrong
(there are dozens of such small issues).

[Bug 1890515] [NEW] ubuntu-bug blah.crash file gives errors that imply it wasn't submitted

2020-08-05 Thread Chris Guiver
Public bug reported:

Unclear messages on `ubuntu-bug /var/crash/blah.crash`

on i386 live qa-test
asus eepc 1000HE (intel atom n270, 1gb, intel mobile 945gse integrated),
wireless RT2790

lubuntu@lubuntu:/var/crash$ ubuntu-bug _usr_bin_gnome-mpv.999.crash

accessibility bus address: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name
org.a11y.Bus was not provided by any .service files
ERROR: gdb does not exist in the sandbox nor on the host

The last line "ERROR: gdb does not exist in the sandbox nor on the host"
I wonder if it's a reason for the submission not taking place, but it
could also be something else.

A clearer message at the end would be helpful, eg.
"Bug submitted: Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better"

or
"Submission a duplicate of existing, noted. Thank you for helping make Ubuntu
better"

Note: I've not thought about what I've written here, but a clearer
message maybe helpful. But ending on an 'ERROR:' doesn't help
users/testers know if the `ubuntu-bug` succeeded.

[Bug 1866444] Re: [MacBook2, 1, SigmaTel STAC9221 A1, Mic, Internal] Recording problem

2020-08-05 Thread Chinarut
Hi! I just want to chime in and document my workaround to use a generic
UVC webcam with a built-in mic.

I attach a screenshot showing both a "multichannel input" and
"microphone" once the UVC webcam is attached.

Notice the picklist still does not contain an item for the system built-
in [analog] microphone.

[Bug 1890436] Re: VGA image is ghosted and stretched (LG L1953S)

2020-08-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This looks like a signalling problem. There doesn't seem to be any
corruption in the image. Only the signal to the monitor doesn't
correctly match the frequencies that the monitor requires.

As a workaround please try selecting 'Ubuntu on Wayland' from the login
screen.

Please also try a different VGA cable if you can.

[Bug 1890512] Re: bluetooth stopped working after recent apt updates

2020-08-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There have been no updates to the 'bluez' package since 20.04 was
released. So that can't be the problem.

Most likely it's a kernel update that caused the problem. The most recent one
was only a week or two ago. Please try downgrading (or upgrading) your kernel
version using these:

[Bug 1890411] Re: Xorg crashes when starting gdm3. Bug in libgl1-mesa-dri.

2020-08-05 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Given that we've implemented the only known solution for this in bug

Some kind of memory corruption (even single threaded) could have the
same effect.

[Bug 1890055] Re: Brightness control does not work with 5.4.0-42.26

2020-08-05 Thread Alex Hung
You can also try to verify sysfs interfaces such as below example

$ ls /sys/class/backlight/
intel_backlight
$ cd /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
$ cat max_brightness
12
$echo 12 | sudo tee brightness
$echo 6 | sudo tee brightness

If this does not change brightness, something is wrong with VGA (or
BIOS) brightness interfaces.

[Bug 1591701] Re: This package is to be replaced by ams.lv2

2020-08-05 Thread Steve Langasek
In practice, the avw.lv2 package has already been removed from the most
recent Ubuntu release as part of the transition away from python2.

The introduction of a package for ams.lv2 is out of scope for an archive
removal bug. This package would need a maintainer willing to do this
work. That is most likely best handled via the linked Debian bug.

[Bug 1890508] Re: Installation of Ubuntu 20.04

2020-08-05 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This failure looks like it was caused by problems with your install
media.

Aug 6 00:20:42 ubuntu kernel: [ 225.842846] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
Aug 6 00:20:42 ubuntu kernel: [ 225.842849] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0xc002924

To me it looks like the media check passed

CasperMD5CheckResult: pass

yet media errors were still encountered during operation.

I would suggest writing your install ISO to different media and trying
again.

[Bug 1890197] Re: mediawiki schema issue after do-release-upgrade -d from 18.04 to 20.04

2020-08-05 Thread Kunal Mehta
The MediaWiki package intentionally doesn't run the updater. You can
either use the web updater (http://localhost/mediawiki/mw-config/) or
the command-line updater (/usr/share/mediawiki/maintenance/update.php).

This is also documented in the package's README.Debian and in the
package's NEWS.

[Bug 1873026] Re: File manager grabs favorites folders on left

2020-08-05 Thread Rob Frohne
Hi All,

As described on June 20, the bug went away, but it is back now, so there
must be some way to make it come and go, but I haven't figured out what
I did.

Rob

@Sean: I used this way to reinstall micro and bypass the bug in repo:

$ sudo apt remove micro
$ sudo apt install curl
$ curl https://getmic.ro | bash

[Bug 1888186] Re: LibreOffice Writer unusably slow

2020-08-05 Thread David Chart
* As originally described, it usually starts to lag within one minute of
usage, although not usually from the first character typed.

* When I changed to 19.10. This involved a clean install on a new
machine and moving my home folder over, rather than an upgrade.

* As originally described, it does not appear to affect spreadsheets,
and appears to affect any document with more than a page or so of
content. It seems to be particularly bad with italic text. (I've tried
changing the font, but that doesn't seem to help.)

[Bug 1890467] Re: wmi_bus wmi_bus-PNP0C14:00: WQBC data block query control method not found

2020-08-05 Thread Alex Hung
These ACPI warnings are harmless most of time, but that also depends on what
ACPI BIOS does on your systems.
=
[ 0.659825] wmi_bus wmi_bus-PNP0C14:00: WQBC data block query control method
not found

WQBC is required according to WMI spec and implementation on this system
but this is missing. This can cause some OEM features from working;
however, many OEM WMI features (like hotkeys) aren't implemented on
Linux in the first place.

(20190816/utaddress-204)
[ 0.664516] ACPI: If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should
use it instead of the native driver

These complains that ACPI BIOS wants to access hardware registers, and
OS never likes BIOS to access without going through device drivers.
Without BIOS's ACPI code (sudo acpidump > acpi.log), it is not possible
to do further analysis; however, it may be the same or similar to
https://wiki.freebsd.org/Laptops/Dell_Latitude_E7240_i5-4310U. If this
is the case, it is for USB2 power management.

Unless you have USB 2 problems you don't need to worry about them
either.

[Bug 1890467] Re: wmi_bus wmi_bus-PNP0C14:00: WQBC data block query control method not found

2020-08-05 Thread Alex Hung
For waking up unexpected issues, you can try to disable wakeup devices
via /proc/acpi/wakeup interfaces.

See examples @ https://askubuntu.com/questions/148481/how-do-i-prevent-
immediate-wake-up-from-suspend-and-or-hibernation

[Bug 1886937] Re: limited hardware support AMD 4700u HP Envy x360 13-ay003nd

2020-08-05 Thread rud
Unfortunately, suspend still does not work even with the final 5.8
kernel. Ubuntu 20.04 on the same HP x360 ay0003nd Ryzen 4700U laptop.
But Askubuntu.com is filled with similar issues, since 18.04:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1239367/ubuntu-20-04-will-not-resume-from-suspend-on-hp-laptop-why
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1220824/hp-envy-x360-cant-suspend

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029474/ubuntu-18-04-dell-xps13-9370-no-longer-suspends-on-lid-close/1044270

and a massive topic summarizing all workarounds here:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2395562=13780724#post13780724

still nothing works for me.
