2020-08-27 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello James, or anyone else affected,

Accepted cloud-init into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-init/20.3-2
-g371b392c-0ubuntu1~16.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
xenial to verification-done-xenial. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-xenial. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

[Bug 1892814] Re: pulseaudio bluetooth problems with profiles

2020-08-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for all that.

The first and biggest problem I can see is this USB device:

Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)

Unfortunately Cambridge Silicon Radio dongles are unreliable and buggy
for everyone. I had to learn that the hard way too... So I strongly
recommend getting a different brand as a first step.

The only remaining concern then is the other wireless dongles on the
same machine:

Logitech, Inc. LX-700 Cordless Desktop Receiver
  Valve Software Wireless Steam Controller

If replacing the Bluetooth dongle with a non-Cambridge one does not
solve the problem then I would try unplugging the above devices. And
also moving away from other sources of 2.4GHz interference like wifi
access points.

But mostly I recommend avoiding dongles that have Cambridge Silicon
Radio chips. They are known to cause all kinds of random failures. The
only hard part is that you can't tell that's what they are until after
you buy one and plug it in :(

** Summary changed:

- pulseaudio bluetooth problems with profiles
+ [Cambridge Silicon Radio] Bluetooth has multiple connectivity issues

- Random freeze on laptop machine, when trying to sleep (normal
power-save/timed sleep mechanism). The machine would not respond to anything
except a hard press of the power button. The attached log output was recorded
at the time of the attempted sleep, indicating a kernel oops. There are a lot
of Nvidia references, so not sure if it's the Nvidia driver, kernel or both.
This is Ubunty 20.04.1 with the latest kernel 5(Ubuntu 5.4.0-42.46-generic
5.4.44 )and Nvidia river 440.100

2020-08-27 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Hello James, or anyone else affected,

Accepted cloud-init into focal-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cloud-init/20.3-2
-g371b392c-0ubuntu1~20.04.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
focal to verification-done-focal. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-focal.

[Bug 1893302] [NEW] SDDM freezes on system boot

2020-08-27 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Public bug reported:

System Info:
OS: Ubuntu Studio Groovy Gorilla
Description:Ubuntu Groovy Gorilla (development branch)
Release:20.10
Kernel: 5.8.0-16-lowlatency
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X (16) @ 3.700GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon VII

Package Info:
sddm:
  Installed: 0.18.1-1ubuntu3
  Candidate: 0.18.1-1ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 0.18.1-1ubuntu3 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu groovy/universe amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

What I expect to happen:
After computer completes boot, I expect to be able to select my user, enter my
password and login successfully in Plasma Desktop.

What happened instead:
After computer completes boot, SDDM appears to be frozen. Cursor does not blink
in the password field, as it should. Mouse still moves but cannot click any
icon. System is not frozen, I can drop to another tty, login, check logs,
reboot.
This does not happen every time I boot, I have not yet found a way to reproduce
the issue reliably, but I would say it happens around 30%~50% of the times I
boot.

[Bug 1893299] Re: bluetooth connection instability

2020-08-27 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1893299/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

But why does g-c-c choose the lowest frequency refresh instead of the

[Bug 1892814] Re: pulseaudio bluetooth problems connecting

2020-08-27 Thread Martin Gerdzhev
The other bluetooth bug is now here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1893299

** Description changed:

Pulseaudio has been super unstable since ubuntu 20.04.
bluetooth has multiple connectivity issues which sometimes can only be
resolved by unpairing and then pairing again.

- e..g Very frequently if I turn on the bluetooth headset and hit connect
- on the bluetooth settings, it shows that it has connected, but my
- headset turns off and the setting shows that it disconnects after 5-10
- seconds. This can happen multiple times. What makes it work for sure is
- if the bluetooth headset is entered in pairing mode and then you try to
- connect using the bluetooth settings
-
- please see the attached log.

+ A big problem comes when a bluetooth headset is connected. Sometimes it
+ does not show up as well in the sound settings or the wrong profile is
+ shown. Sometimes I try changing the profile it works, but other times it
+ does not alter anything - e.g. changing from hfp to a2dp shows the
+ change but the profile remains. If I switch settings tabs and go back to
+ sound settings the old profile remains.

[Bug 1893168] Re: groovy gnome-shell crash

2020-08-27 Thread shemgp
Since people might get hit by this problem, I'm including a possible
solution to it.

WARNING, it will remove most of your packages (and install some) and
their configuration.

How to somewhat refresh Ubuntu by removing almost all packages and
reinstalling ubuntu-desktop:

1. Download the attached file: leftpackages.list

2. Run the following lines in the folder where the leftpackagest.list
file is located:

rm minimum.list
# make list of packages to remove which are not in leftpackages.list
dpkg --get-selections | while read line; do if ! cat leftpackages.list | grep
"$line" > /dev/null; then echo "$line" | sed -e
's/\([^e]\)install/\1deinstall/' >> minimum.list; else echo "$line" >>
minimum.list; fi; done
# mark those packages that should be removed
sudo dpkg --set-selections < minimum.list
# remove them
sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade
# remove their config
sudo aptitude purge '~c'

3. Install ubuntu desktop:

sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop --install-recommends

[Bug 1893297] [NEW] [SRU] please ad 9.27+dfsg-6 into focal-updates

2020-08-27 Thread Kei Okada
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

Please add euslisp+9.27+dfsg-6 and jskeus+1.24+dfsg-2 from groovy to
focal-updates.

EusLisp is Lisp interpreter and it well works with jskeus, an Robotics-
related extentions. To run jskeus, we need euslisp > 9.27, which failed
to release on focal just before FeatureFreeze.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/euslisp/9.27+dfsg-6
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jskeus/1.2.4+dfsg-2

See the changelog entry below for a full list of changes and bugs.
https://salsa.debian.org/science-team/euslisp/-/blob/master/debian/changelog

[Test Case]

These packages are intensivery tested with debian-salsa using
autopkgtest

https://salsa.debian.org/science-team/euslisp/-/pipelines
https://salsa.debian.org/science-team/jskeus/-/pipelines

[Regression Potential]

We have confirmed there is no regresion using debian-salsa CI/CD process.

[Discussion]

Sicne most of euslisp users uses jskeus extenison, we'd like to add
jskeus into 20.04 LTS.

+ Since this patch is CCed to stable kernel, I just sent this patch
+ to oem-5.6 kernel, our oem project is waiting for this patch to
+ be landed to oem-5.6 kernel first.
+
+ [Impact]
+ On the Dell TGL laptop, if connecting a monitor via type-c to DP/HDMI
+ adapter, we will have an audio issue, that is playing the music and
+ suspend the system, after resuming back, the audio can't output from
+ DP/HDMI monitor anymore.
+
+ [Fix]
+ Cherry-pick a fix from upstream, this patch is verifying the needed
+ converter and pin to be in the D0 state.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Connect a monitor with USB-C to DP/HDMI adapter, open the youtu.com
+ and playing sth, suspend the system and resume, check if the sound
+ could play the music, repeat 20 times, all work very well.
+
+ [Regression Risk]
+ If this patch could introduce regression, it should be the power
+ consumption regression on Intel HDMI audio, since it makes the
+ converter and pin to be D0 state earlier than before. But this
+ impact is very small. one converter and one pin consume very little
+ power.

[Bug 1860483] Re: [nouveau, GeForce 7300 LE] screen background overlaid with scan type artifact in red

2020-08-27 Thread Aaron Wagner
I have been experiencing a similar problem with a GeForce 7300 GT on a
Mac Pro 1,1. I also have visual artifacts in 18.04 and 20.04. With
18.04, there are no artifacts or other problems during installation from
a DVD, but when booting the installed system there are artifacts after
login and eventually programs start hanging. With 20.04, the
installation program itself has artifacts when running off the DVD.

Just did a clean install of 14.04.6 and that works fine.

It looks like you still have packages from an old PPA installed. Example:
libgtk2-unique-perl:amd64 < 0.05-3build1~0ppa1~disco @ii mK Ib > FU=0

Install ppa-purge and make sure you remove any PPA's.
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

+ Pulseaudio has been super unstable since ubuntu 20.04.
bluetooth has multiple connectivity issues which sometimes can only be
resolved by unpairing and then pairing again.
- Microphones randomly stop working until changing the active microphone
multiple times. Today my mic stopped working 3 times.
- Sometimes cannot switch bluetooth headset profiles. Or it says that it
switched it but when you click on a different tab and go back, it reverts to
the old setting.

- I see some warnings/errors in the logs that could be related:
- gsd-media-keys[2948]: Unable to get default sink
- gsd-media-keys[2948]: Unable to get default source
-
- kernel: Bluetooth: hci0: SCO packet for unknown connection handle 65
-
- pulseaudio[2489]: q overrun, queuing locally
+ e..g Very frequently if I turn on the bluetooth headset and hit connect
+ on the bluetooth settings, it shows that it has connected, but my
+ headset turns off and the setting shows that it disconnects after 5-10
+ seconds. This can happen multiple times. What makes it work for sure is

[Bug 1890618] Re: [GeForce 6100 / nForce 405] [nouveau] Major desktop graphics corruption

I think we are out of options. Since the open source Nvidia driver
creates corruption (as it does for other people too), and the closed
source Nvidia driver doesn't support this chip at all, I can only
recommend buying a newer graphics card.

2020-08-27 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Please run a memory test to check for physical RAM corruption using
either:

  https://www.memtest86.com/
  https://www.memtest.org/

That will take several hours.

Please also try adding a line to your /etc/environment of the form:

  CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-offscreen-redirect

and then reboot.

[Bug 1893094] Re: [Nvidia GeForce GT 710] wrong resolution, no working driver

That is bug 1773859, which is caused by system upgrades.

I recommend backing up all your data and reinstalling the system from
scratch using https://releases.ubuntu.com/20.04/ Because this machine
appears to have undergone 6 years of updates and is probably broken in
more subtle ways than I can see right now.

[Bug 1893289] [NEW] convert -scale makes file with EXIF in a place that exifautotran can't read

2020-08-27 Thread Akkana Peck
Public bug reported:

This comes from Ubuntu bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libjpeg9/+bug/1842116
which references Debian bug
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=947182

Start with a JPEG image, say from a camera, that has an Orientation tag
other than 0:

$ jhead dsc00902.jpg | grep Orientation
Orientation : rotate 90

Scale it smaller:

$ convert dsc00902.jpg -scale 1024 dsc00902sm.jpg

The scaled file still has an Orientation tag:

$ jhead dsc00902sm.jpg | grep Orientation
Orientation : rotate 90

Now try to use exifautotran to rotate it and set the orientation to 0:

$ exifautotran dsc00902sm.jpg

$ jhead dsc00902sm.jpg | grep Orientation
Orientation : rotate 90

The orientation still specifies rotation.

This is apparently because convert put the APP1 marker in a place that
libjpeg-turbo-progs considers invalid (see the Debian bug linked at the
top of this report).

Indeed, if I use hexdump to look at the beginning of dsc00902sm.jpg:

000 d8ff e0ff 1000 464a 4649 0100 0101 5e01
010 5e01 e1ff cbbb 7845 6669 4949

The e1ff that specifies the APP1 (EXIF) doesn't occur until 20 bytes in.
If I use hexdump on the original image from the camera:

000 d8ff e1ff cbbb 7845 6669 4949 002a

APP1 is right after the SOI, where exifautotran wants it (and
exifautotran works on that file).

I'm not conversant enough with the JPEG standard to have an opinion
whether the libjpeg-turbo-progs maintainer is right to insist on APP1
being immediately after SOI. I think this may be a newly introduced
requirement from exifautotran. But it's frustrating not to be able to
use convert and exifautotran together in a script.

THis applies to both graphicsmagick and imagemagick. I'm not sure if I
should file a duplicate bug for imagemagick.
