[Bug 1735677] Re: Elan touchpad not working (elan_i2c invalid report id data)

2020-08-31 Thread Aan Anshori
Dear Teodor and Kai-Heng,
I got the same problem myself when using AntiX19.2 64bit with my Lenovo Ideapad
320.
I am very beginner in Linux and was wondering how to try that kernel. I mean in
step by step command if you don't mind. Touchpad is not working since I run
live USB.

What shoul I do

Thanks a lot.

[Bug 1888352] Re: use builtin dump_acpi_tables.py in hookutils

2020-08-31 Thread Yuan-Chen Cheng
** Description changed:

  1. add apcidump to hookutils.py:attach_hardware and use the builtin
dump_acpi_tables.py.
  2. remove explicit acpidump from oem-getlogs to use the builtin one.
  3. refine usage string in oem-getlogs.
+
+ To SRU to focal:
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ * for OEM project, lts is been used. And collect log is important.
+With built-in tool to get acpidump, we don't need to install
+extra tool in the end-customer's machine. That make it much
+easier for the oem process.
+
+ * By call built-in utility, we no lounger need to install extra
+tools to collect data that's both complete and convenient for
+HWE people to work on.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ * before this applied, run oem-getlog without install acpidump.
+we can't get the dump data. After this applied, we can just dump
+the data HWE need.
+
+ * test step: install the new package, run
+
+sudo -E oem-getlogs [-c case_id] to get the
+
+use apport-unpack to unpack the apport file.
+
+check the acpidump file. HWE people know much better on check
+the acpidump file. Give the dump_acpi_tables.py just updated and SRUed
+by HWE/ACPI/UEFI expert, it's pretty safe to do so.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+
+ * Given the modification change the way to collect log, even it
+failed, it won't break apport itself. Just the collected log
+might contain data not so valid.
+
+ * Given acpidump mostly used by HWE/ACIP/UEFI expert, and they
+just reviewed and updated the dump_acpi_tables.py script, I
+believe it will have good quality.

[Bug 1893724] Re: safe-rm breaks upgrades from 18.04 to 20.04

2020-08-31 Thread François Marier
I backported the fix to 18.04 in my PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~fmarier/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/19900160

but I don't have an easy way of testing the 18.04-20.04 upgrade so I'm
not sure that would be enough to fix what I ran into.

[Bug 1893728] [NEW] Ubuntu CVE Tracker krb5 1.17-6ubuntu4 CVE-2018-20217 false positive

2020-08-31 Thread Jani Flaaming
Public bug reported:

Information in shows that krb5 versions before 1.17 are vulnerable to
CVE-2018-20217.
https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2018/CVE-2018-20217.html

Based on Debian bug report, this is already fixed in 1.16.2 version:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=917387

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) includes version krb5 1.17.6:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/focal/+source/krb5

Ubuntu CVE Tracker page shows that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) doesn't have
a package where CVE-2018-20217 is fixed.
https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2018/CVE-2018-20217.html

Steps to reproduce:
This was found when examining AWS Elastic Container Registry Vulnerability
scanning results for a Docker image based on latest Ubuntu 20.04: Here is the
complete line from the report:
krb5:1.17-6ubuntu4 MEDIUM A Reachable Assertion issue was discovered in the KDC
in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.17. If an attacker can obtain a krbtgt
ticket using an older encryption type (single-DES, triple-DES, or RC4), the
attacker can crash the KDC by making an S4U2Self request.

It can be seen from the scan that the Docker image included krb5
bversion 1.17-6.

Expected:
No vulnerability finding.

Actual:
krb5 bversion 1.17-6ubuntu4 is reported as vulnerable to CVE-2018-20217.

[Bug 1893658] Re: Possible Memory Leak

2020-08-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You need to close your browser tabs and/or close some apps.

It's certainly possible Windows copes with such stresses better than
Ubuntu does. To investigate that further you might want to try adding
more swap space or even disabling swap, as some people claim the Linux
kernel performs better that way:

  sudo swapoff -a

If all else fails, please just reduce the number of browser tabs you
have open, close some apps, or add more RAM if your laptop allows for
more to be added.

What Can I do to improve, because When I was using windows with same (bit more)

But I think there is something wrong with this system or my installation,

Could you please suggest some workaround if you can? What I should do .

[Bug 1893658] Re: Possible Memory Leak

2020-08-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. It's hard to tell because ps.txt is cut off on the right for
some reason. But it seems Google Chrome tabs are your main problem. I
suggest just close some tabs :)

Also Firefox and Skype are using significant memory so close those if
you can.

This does not appear to be a problem with Ubuntu.

[Bug 1893724] [NEW] safe-rm breaks upgrades from 18.04 to 20.04

2020-08-31 Thread François Marier
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from bionic to focal this weekend and discovered that one of
my packages (safe-rm) can totally break the 20.04 upgrade. Not sure how
reproducible it is (I only upgraded once), but I had to remove safe-rm
before manually restarting the failed upgrade.

It comes down to the fact that safe-rm takes over the rm command and
unfortunately is written in Perl so while Perl isn't quite working (e.g.
while it's being upgraded), the rm command is broken :/

I just pushed out a fix to limit the takeover to interactive shells only
(https://salsa.debian.org/debian/safe-
rm/-/commit/6dbe2adaed423f61464c343f8b9a1b1f42f721f4), but the real fix
which I'm hoping to get to in the next few weeks is to rewrite the tool
in Rust (https://bugs.launchpad.net/safe-rm/+bug/1854103) to avoid
depending on an interpreter.

That said, it's a pretty serious issue so probably the best thing for
20.04 might be to conflict on the package somehow to make sure it's
uninstalled prior to the upgrade.

I wasn't sure which package to file this bug against so please re-assign
if needed.

[Bug 1892754] Re: Unable to boot in UEFI+secure boot mode

2020-08-31 Thread Chris Guiver
The Ubuntu daily image I used in testing
(http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/daily-live/20200826/groovy-desktop-
arm64.iso.zsync) and matches comment #13 still fails to boot with secure
boot enabled

sony vaio svp112a1cw (i5-9400u, 4gb, intel haswell-ULT)

- mokutil --db
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/gdsMxpwztZ/

- mokutil --dbx
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/3PtC2zzKfP/ (dbx)

(created on same sony device booting the ISO with secure boot disabled)

The subsequent screens I see on hitting OK are

- continue boot, enroll key from disk, enroll hash from disk
https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ve4PMQexDSfGcdWy5

- select key (ESP or PciRoot(0)/Pci...)
https://photos.app.goo.gl/sKbVRTvbKQqCcbpz8

I have done nothing at this prompt; I just exited.

I don't own a box new enough to have secure boot so I've never learnt it
(this sony isn't mine but can use it for testing for now, but have
before now always had secure boot disabled).

Maybe for older folks like me we need a wiki walk-through page for this?

[Bug 1893719] [NEW] Request for adding support for Synaptics fingerprint reader sensors: 0xE9 and 0xDF

2020-08-31 Thread Chih-Hsyuan Ho
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * We were advised by Synaptics to upgrade the existing libfprint in the
archive to include sensor support for 0xE9 and 0xDF as highlighted in
the following commits:

https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/libfprint/libfprint/-/commit/8b64312f4bfee84c8be1eb9763f7fe87ec078a1a

[Test Case]

 * We have several OEM platforms with these Synaptics sensors enabled
with Focal and they can be used to validate these changes.

[Regression Potential]

 * Regression potential for an updated libfprint with these new PIDs is
low

  [Test Case]

  * Generate a Hyper-V image with livecd-rootfs;
  * Import the geneated vhdx to Hyper-V;
- * Check:
-   - whether the xrdp service is running via "systemctl status xrdp";

+ * Check whether the xrdp service is running via "systemctl status xrdp".

  [Regression Potential]

This patch will apply to a later version of xrdp, thus potential
regressions would be a result xrdp being outdated. Which will cause
problem for bionic or older, thus this will be only backported to focal
  and higher.

[Bug 1893716] Re: scripts in /etc/update-motd.d/ run even on login via non-interactive scp and sftp sessions

2020-08-31 Thread Thomas Leavitt
** Description changed:

My client has 200+ devices automatically uploading information via sftp
and scp to a server every few minutes. After a recent update, I noticed
the load on their server spiking through the roof. Upon investigation, I
  discovered a horde of landscape-sysinfo and /usr/bin/lsb_release
processes running that correlated with login session notifications in
- /etc/syslog and the load spikes.
+ /var/log/syslog and the load spikes.

It appears that even in non-interactive sessions where this information
will never be seen, the configuration options below in /etc/pam.d/sshd
cause these items to be launched (in fact, probably everything in /etc
/update-motd.d). This only started on the system in question after a
recent set of system updates were in stalled.

The content of /etc/update-motd.d/* really, really, really shouldn't be
executed if the session in question is not interactive, as it provides
no value at all. Unfortunately, to disable it for these non-interactive
sessions, we also have to disable it for the interactive ones as well
where it has some value (though not enough to make spiking the load on
this server through the roof an acceptable tradeoff).

  # Print the message of the day upon successful login.

  # and a static (admin-editable) part from /etc/motd.
  #sessionoptional pam_motd.so motd=/run/motd.dynamic
  #sessionoptional pam_motd.so noupdate

Also, looking at the script 00-header in /etc/update-motd.d/,
/usr/bin/lsb_release is being improperly launched, as /etc/lsb_release
  does include the necessary information:

  [ -r /etc/lsb-release ] && . /etc/lsb-release

[Bug 1893655] Re: Headphones connect but don't appear as audio output

2020-08-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Even if it's not that bug, please try the same workaround. Just delete
your personal audio config:

  cd ~/.config
  rm -rf pulse

and then log out and in again.

[Bug 1893716] [NEW] scripts in /etc/update-motd.d/ run even on login via non-interactive scp and sftp sessions

2020-08-31 Thread Thomas Leavitt
Public bug reported:

My client has 200+ devices automatically uploading information via sftp
and scp to a server every few minutes. After a recent update, I noticed
the load on their server spiking through the roof. Upon investigation, I
discovered a horde of landscape-sysinfo and /usr/bin/lsb_release
processes running that correlated with login session notifications in
/etc/syslog and the load spikes.

# This includes a dynamically generated part from /run/motd.dynamic
# and a static (admin-editable) part from /etc/motd.
#sessionoptional pam_motd.so motd=/run/motd.dynamic
#sessionoptional pam_motd.so noupdate

Also, looking at the script 00-header in /etc/update-motd.d/,
/usr/bin/lsb_release is being improperly launched, as /etc/lsb_release
does include the necessary information:

[ -r /etc/lsb-release ] && . /etc/lsb-release

if [ -z "$DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION" ] && [ -x /usr/bin/lsb_release ]; then
# Fall back to using the very slow lsb_release utility
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=$(lsb_release -s -d)
fi

# cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=16.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=xenial
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 16.04.7 LTS"

[Bug 1893655] Re: Headphones connect but don't appear as audio output

2020-08-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Do you mean they don't appear in the audio device list at all, or they
just don't get used even when they're selected from the list? Either
way, bug 1866194 might be the answer and a fix for that should arrive in
20.04 in the coming weeks.

2020-08-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
You shouldn't need 'Middle Emulation' if you have a real middle button.
That emulation option just simulates a middle button when you press the
left and right buttons simultaneously.

Please run:

  xev

and then middle click in the little white window. Do you see in the text
produced that it mentions 'button 2' ?

[Bug 1860826] Re: pam_unix(sudo:auth): Couldn't open /etc/securetty: No such file or directory

2020-08-31 Thread Sterling Butters
Would this bug cause a gnome-session initialization delay? My logs have
this error and technically everything "works" correctly but
initialization of the user session takes > 1 min. The greeter isn't
exactly fast either but definitely more tolerable. My systemd analysis
looks fine too. Really hoping this bug is the issue.

I should note that when I say "proprietary" above, I mean the nvidia-
driver-440 package.

This kind of issue is way over my head, but given what you just wrote we
now know that it's not im-config related. Changing the affected package
to mutter, so the developers who work with that package can take a look.

[Bug 1893709] Re: Very big text top bar and login screem whit zoom

2020-08-31 Thread Javier
Thanks, I just tried disabling im-config and the problem actually seems
to persist. Investigating I have observed that the problem resides in
the dependencies "GObject data for mutter" and "Windows manager library
from mutter" that uses im-config (or at least it is visually inside im-
config in the graphical ubuntu updater. It is when updating these two
packages when the problem appears, if I restore those two packages it
solves.

[Bug 1870736] Re: [nvidia] Screen scaling 125% gives 200%

2020-08-31 Thread Chris McDonough
I'm updated fully as of today under 20.04 and have the same issue
described in OP with an NVIDIA M2000M in a Thinkpad P50 using the
proprietary drivers and 1 1080p monitor (the laptop panel) and 1 4k
monitor (Dell external).

#83 indicated that they changed things so that their PRIME settings were
"on demand" and that made things work for them, but my external monitor
just quits working when I change it to that.

Things work mostly as expected with the nouveau driver, but no scaling
really works under the proprietary driver. I would use the nouveau
driver but it seems very sluggish under any scaling factor.

That said, my issue isn't really about fractional scaling, FWIW. I want
to set the external display at 200% and set the internal one at 100%, a
configuration which doesn't require fractional. But doing this produces
200% on both panels reliably (and the percentage values in settings
reflect that both are set to 200%) under the proprietary drivers.

So right now I can effectively either choose from these three options:
a) use nouveau, make both displays work as I would like, but have a very
sluggish UI experience b) use proprietary and have text that's too small
to read for my old eyes on the 4K external monitor but have a usable
built-in display, or b) use proprietary to get reasonably sized text and
icons on the 4K external monitor but accept that the built-in monitor is
not very useful because its effective resolution is 960x540.

It seems that some people have gotten the combination of proprietary
NVIDIA drivers and scaling to work. I would try this on another system
to doublecheck but I don't have a machine handy with NVIDIA graphics
different than the one in my system (M2000M).

2020-08-31 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for your report.

It sounds very odd to me that im-config would have anything to do with
the issue you are having. Especially the latest change, which only was a
tiny change to a .desktop file.

Does the problem disappear if you downgrade to version 0.44-1ubuntu1?

[Bug 1893709] [NEW] Very big text top bar and login screem whit zoom

2020-08-31 Thread Javier
Public bug reported:

After updating im-config to version 0.44-1ubuntu1.1 the top bar is shown
with very large text and the login screen is zoomed. After doing several
updating-restoring tests I have identified that the problem package is
im-config. It only happens to me with the nvidia rtx 2060 card and 440
driver. When I connect my monitor to the intel integrated graphics, the
problem is solved.

Will it be a conflict between the nvidia drivers and im-config?

[Bug 1887943] Re: [SRU] TLS is not enabled for memcached>=1.5.13

2020-08-31 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Moisés,

I've submitted a merge proposal for this change. It will be reviewed by
a ubuntu-server team member and if approved they or I will sponsor the
upload to focal-proposed. Technically I could review it myself, but
figure it's better to get a second set of eyes. I did attempt to build
it myself in an LXC container but it failed here:

ok 16 - strtoull
/bin/bash: line 7: 24639 Alarm clock ./testapp
Failed to startup/connect to memcached server. at ./t/binary.t line 10.
./t/binary.t
Dubious, test returned 25 (wstat 6400, 0x1900)
...

However given that it passed in the PPA I'll assume something's just
quirky about my lxc container.

One question I had was that I noticed this is added to Build-Depends:

+ libio-socket-ssl-perl ,

What is the rationale for the !nocheck? I assume this is from the
Debian change, but this sounds like something that might need to be
mentioned in the changelog.

[Bug 1861610] Re: 'Elan touchpad' not detected on 'Lenovo ThinkBook 15 IIL'

You won't get any functionallity from ubuntu. Pointer events and 2
clicks that's it. Even though the touchpad get's recognized it get's
recognized as some hybrid ELAN device, which means no software can
detect it. I hope that there is something that you can do to "trick" the
kernel because the Arch distribution works flawlessly so it CAN be
recognized, but how, I really don't know.

[Bug 1892754] Re: Unable to boot in UEFI+secure boot mode

2020-08-31 Thread Steve Langasek
I am unable to reproduce this issue here using an unmodified, current
groovy image of either Ubuntu (http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/daily-
live/20200826/groovy-desktop-amd64.iso) or Kubuntu
(http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/daily-live/20200831/groovy-desktop-
amd64.iso) in a KVM instance configured with the Microsoft SecureBoot
keys.

Is this problem still reproducible for you with the current daily images
listed above?

What are the contents of your secureboot firmware variables, as reported
by mokutil --db and mokutil --dbx?

> Followed by an OK box - which when selected offers to import the SHIM
key

What key, exactly, are you being offered to import? Can you please
attach a screenshot?

[Bug 1840725] Re: Microphone not working in Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS on new hp-spectre-x360-convertible-15 laptop

2020-08-31 Thread Lucas Chen Alba
I was having this issue, didn't gather much info on in, but I was on
Ubuntu 18.x LTS, my Dell Vostro was detecting 3 mics, when I actually
had only 1. I reinstalled Ubuntu, 20.04 now. At first glance it was
detecting the same mics and some buzz noise, same with the 18.x, but
then after the initial update, I restarted my pc and now it's all
working, and it only detects 1 mic
