[Bug 1872244] Re: Jack audio not working on Ubuntu 20.04 running on a Thinkpad Carbon X1 (7th gen)

2020-09-12 Thread Daniel Zrlrink
Hi all,

I think we're confusing OP, who is using the correct 7th gen audio
interface, with someone who chimed in with their 2nd gen audio interface
aplay results.

I've got a solution. The period that this driver uses is an EXTREMELY
non-standard 1008 samples.

I discovered this by making a dummy jackd server and adding the card
manually via alsa_in:

[19:36:16]daniel@daniel-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-7th:~>
$alsa_in -d hw:CARD=sofhdadsp,DEV=0 -r 48000
WARNING: buffer size does not match: (requested 2048, got 2040)
WARNING: period size does not match: (requested 1024, got 1008)
selected sample format: 32bit
delay = 4208
delay = 1022

Anyway, the solution here is to use a period of 1008. This can be
assigned in qjackctl by typing it in instead of using the dropdown, or
via cli with the `--period 1008` option.

Some audio applications will need additional config. For example,
supercollider requires a 2^n block size that is a factor of the sample
rate. This can be achieved by executing `s.options.blockSize = 16;`
before booting the server.

Other than the bizarre period, most of the defaults work quite well.
Obviously this can be tuned, but at a bare minimum, jackd can be
successfully started on my machine via:

[02:37:47]daniel@daniel-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-7th:/usr/lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg>

$jackd -d alsa --period 1008

[Bug 1895423] Re: No alarm sound

2020-09-12 Thread Stephen Gornick
I see now that this is a duplicate of bug #1878361

but since this has been fixed, but the snap has not, I'm not sure if
this ticket should get markted as a duplicate and closed, or if it
should remain open until the issue with the snap is addressed.

[Bug 1895423] [NEW] No alarm sound

2020-09-12 Thread Stephen Gornick
Public bug reported:

I'm not hearing any alarm (audio sound) when there's a trigger (e.g.,
Timer reaches zero).

I see in the log:

No alarm sound -- utils.vala:391: Error playing sound: Invalid argument

$ gnome-clocks --version
Clocks 3.36.2

This is gnome-clocks installed on Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS with snap, not apt.

$ snap list
Name Version  Rev   Tracking
Publisher Notes
gnome-clocks 3.36.2+git4.0aaab08  261   latest/stable
canonical✓-

After this issue, I uninstalled the snap and installed gnome-clocks
package using apt. The sound played just fine. I then removed gnome-
clocks and re-installed the snap, and it worked as before (no sound).

This was reported by someone else, upstream:

- https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-clocks/-/issues/111
- https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/vala/-/issues/995

"So apparently all is needed is to rebuild gnome-clocks using the latest
vala."

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when
trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following
command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your
issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory
corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a
memory test.  Thanks in advance!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1895422] [NEW] Sound card not detected on Dell Latitude 9510

2020-09-12 Thread Harrison Chen
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 20.04.01 LTS, kernel (linux-image-generic) version
5.4.0.47.50.

I believe my sound card is not being detected by Ubuntu. I checked the
serial number and via BIOS (which I've upgraded to the latest version)
according to the specs (https://topics-
cdn.dell.com/pdf/latitude-15-9510-2-in-1-laptop_owners-manual5_en-
us.pdf) the sound controller/speaker should be Realtek ALC711-CG /
Realtek ALC1309D.

However, when I run lspci only the following device appears:
00:1f.3 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:02c8]

In alsamixer, only the HDMI port appears.

If "prime-select query" returns "on-demand" and the Nvidia GPU is used
when you run with those variables, then on-demand is working correctly.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds like you are asking about
seamless/automatic load-based switching, which is only available on
Windows at this time.

Maybe this is more of a bug in nvidia-settings?

[Bug 1892859] Re: short date is not sent through to app in playinlinux

2020-09-12 Thread MicWit
Turns out this is the version of wine causing the issue, I have logged a
bug at https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49827

As far as Ubuntu goes, is it worth setting the default version of wine
back to 3.x or are the new features more important than a date? Anyone
doing any accounting or other date related things in wine that is not in
the en_US locale (anything but MM/dd/yyy) is going to have massive
issues with it.

[Bug 1895420] [NEW] gdm3 with xdmcp does not show login box to a remote X server

2020-09-12 Thread Ryutaroh Matsumoto
Public bug reported:

With a fresh installation of Ubuntu 20.04.1,
adding the following to /etc/gdm/custom.conf

[xdmcp]
Enable=tue
ShowLocalGreeter=false

works fine. But with ShowLocalGreeter=true,
gdm3 does not show a login box to a remote X server.
journalctl -u gdm shows "GdmDisplay: Session never registered, failling"

If the combination of Enable=true and ShowLocalGreeter=true is unsupported,
Enable=true should also mean ShowLocalGreeter=false.

[Bug 1895418] [NEW] systemd-resolved default config for Caching is still "yes"

2020-09-12 Thread Cameron Steel
Public bug reported:

Back in December, the default for systemd-resolved caching in Ubuntu
systemd was changed to "no-negative" from the upstream default "yes" [0]

In this change, the default value in the resolved.conf file was missed.
As the defaults in this file are commented, the effective default is
still "no-negative", however when viewing the config file, the commented
default "yes" is at odds with the man page resolved.conf(5), which
correctly states the default as "no-negative".

This was an issue for me as I set DNSSEC to "yes", and expected Caching
to also be "yes". Running DNSSEC with the default "no-negative" Caching
is detrimental to performance resolving unsigned zones, as the non-
existence of DNSSEC RRs must be looked up every time.

The issue with the intersection of DNSSEC and Caching is for upstream,
but the least that needs to be done here is updating the resolved.conf
template with "Caching=no-negative" to match the man page and behaviour,
and perhaps even adding a note to the "DNSSEC=" section of
resolved.conf(5) that Caching should be enabled. Now that I'm looking at
that man page, the default for DNSSEC is also listed as "allow-
downgrade", whereas the default for Ubuntu is "no".

[Bug 1887223] Re: python3-openimageio fails with an ImportError: libjemalloc.so.2: cannot allocate memory in static TLS block

2020-09-12 Thread Richard Viney
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1882998 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1882998

This is fixed in focal by the debdiff recently posted in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openvdb/+bug/1882998

I've filled in the SRU template there, done a debdiff, and added ubuntu-
sponsors to that bug. Hopefully that's enough to get this fix into the
focal LTS.

If it's possible to add a test for this to ensure no future regression
I'll do that as well. Does anyone know if that's doable in this kind of
situation?

Thanks.

[Bug 1894414] Re: Cant change "Switch to next keyboard layout" shortcut to Alt+Shift. Again.

2020-09-12 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
As you say that's a known limitation.

But you can install gnome-tweaks and use "Tweaks" to set an XKB shortcut
for switching input sources. There Alt+Shift is one of several possible
options.

Closing.

[Bug 1861610] Re: 'Elan touchpad' not detected on 'Lenovo ThinkBook 15 IIL'

2020-09-12 Thread Tzahi Serruya
The only tip I can give, is that I tried @ferenc's fix while I was running
5.8.0 kernel.
It was working as expected with the regular problems.
Then I've had some issues with Virtualbox-dkms and needed to go back to
5.4.0-47 kernel version.
Suddenly Ubuntu detects the trackpad flawlessly.

Good luck.

don't know when the bug occurs or I'd scream about it.

What I do know is this old version is stable and I've had demonstrably
no problems with it.

[Bug 1700419] Re: caffeine 2.9.7 isn't working on Ubuntu 20.04

2020-09-12 Thread Reuben Thomas
The patch for this bug: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/xdg-
utils/-/issues/98 does fix the problem, though I am not sure that the
problem here is that the window has no title, rather that no title is
reported by X11::Protocol. However, for our purposes that's good enough!

I shall ensure that this is raised on the xdg-utils Debian package. In
the mean time, a workaround for users is to apply the patch from the
above issue to xdg-screensaver, and place the patched version on their
PATH (e.g. in ~/bin).

[Bug 1700419] Re: caffeine 2.9.4 isn't working on Ubuntu 16.04

2020-09-12 Thread Reuben Thomas
Reopening, as I have finally managed to reproduce this bug. It occurs
for me when the title of a full screen window (the window for which
Caffeine inhibits idleness) contains a non-ASCII character. This causes
an error in the embedded Perl script in xdg-screensaver, in the
subroutine screensaver_gnome_screensaver, where it tries to get the
window name (the call to GetProperty). This in turn appears to be a bug
in the Perl module X11::Protocol.

Settings in pam-auth-update

Restarted smbd and observed the log entry:

So, to summarize: the setting "eCryptfs Key/Mount Management" from pam-
auth-update is what causes the behavior. So I guess this isn't related
to Samba, but I would still consider this defective behavior
nevertheless.

But honestly even if you close this and never did anything about it it
would still help someone encountering this in future because of the
search results.

[Bug 1895412] Re: X11 screen rotated

2020-09-12 Thread Hadmut Danisch
I think I've found the reason, but not the solution.

I've put a
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "eDP-1"
Option "Rotate" "normal"
EndSection

into /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which did not help.

but then I noticed that this notebook comes with a flippable screen made
for Win10 to be used as a tablet. When rotating the Screen, Xorg keeps
turning the screen, but always wrong.

So Xorg is technically able to handle the changing screen orientiation
when turning the notebook upside down, but it always chooses wrong
rotation settings. Translation of screen oriention into xrandr settings
is wrong.

[Bug 1886148] Re: failure to boot groovy daily

2020-09-12 Thread sudodus
I must say, that I am surprised :-)

mkusb version 12.6.1 can create persistent live drives, that boot both
in BIOS mode and UEFI mode, also with secure boot from the current daily
Xubuntu Groovy iso file. I used the setting 'usb-pack-efi'.

$ ls -l xubuntu/groovy-desktop-amd64.iso
-rw--- 1 sudodus sudodus 1803091968 sep 12 02:07
xubuntu/groovy-desktop-amd64.iso

See the attached screenshot.

-o-

When cloned to a USB drive, this file does not boot in BIOS mode.

[Bug 1895412] [NEW] X11 screen rotated

2020-09-12 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Hi,
I just installed 20.04.1 on a brand new Acer TravelMate B3.

- First I tried Lubuntu 20.04.0 from a USB stick without problems, X11
working correctly. I did not install it because it was a 20.04.0

- Then I put a reguluar Ubuntu Desktop 20.04.1 on a USB stick and bootet
from it. Even the console text output is normal for some time and then
is rotated by 90 degree to the left.

The X11 (installation) screen then comes up completely rotated
counterclockwise bei 90 degree. I then need to do a xrand --output eDP-1
--rotate normal to get things straight. Works normal then.

After installation it came up rotated again, even the login screen is rotated
90°

But sorry, can't help in debugging. If I don't find a permanent solution, I
need to install Lubuntu or Xubuntu, because I need to get this notebook up and
running by tomorrow.

[Bug 1894899] Re: smbd with "obey pam restrictions" enabled unmounts my interactive users' ecryptfs home directory

2020-09-12 Thread 0xC0000022
Apologies, for leaving out that information. It was indeed not
intentional.

Here follows the information for (1)

(The only redaction is stripping out the comments and empty lines)

===
# grep -vP '^(#|\s*$)' /etc/pam.d/samba
@include common-auth
@include common-account
@include common-session-noninteractive
# grep -vP '^(#|\s*$)' /etc/pam.d/common-session-noninteractive
session [default=1] pam_permit.so
session requisite   pam_deny.so
session requiredpam_permit.so
session optionalpam_umask.so
session requiredpam_unix.so
session optionalpam_ecryptfs.so unwrap
===

Please note that I did _not_ edit any of those files. `debsums -ce` is
my witness 😉

Sorry for that negligence in not providing the PAM configuration. I did
in fact also venture into PAM as I mentioned in my initial post. Alas,
since I hadn't reconfigured anything PAM-related it made no sense that I
caused this.

I'll follow up with the information concerning (2) shortly (and adjust
the bug status). I have to give this as piecemeal because I am fully
expecting that the plug is pulled on me w.r.t. my home folder.

[Bug 1895382] Re: Ability to install 2 or more versions at once

2020-09-12 Thread SHJ
"Ability to install 2 or more versions at once" - this means:
Ability to install 2 or more versions of programm at once
Ability to install 2 or more versions of .so at once
Ability to install 2 or more versions of kernel at once

It should be evident why title was exactly this and nothing else.

This was done for Kernels (long time ago) but not for everything else...
Pretty odd decision to do just 20%.

This should have system-wide support, not just GRUB and not just
Kernels.
