+ It has been a month and I have been experiencing this weird behavior.
+ Actually **two** significant weird behavior:

- 1. Earphone option like this 1 while unlocking the laptop as if I have
inserted earphones.
- 2. I have to press Fn + Esc every time I start Ubuntu.

I would love to know what is causing this?

  Some details on 1st issue:
- I have to wait like 10 min or so after the lock of the screen. This will
trigger something and I will see earphone options. Or I have to close the lid
and wait like 10 min or so and open the lid and BOOM I will see annoying
unwanted earphone option. I can upload a video showing this in action IF u
don’t believe me.

[Bug 1896176] [NEW] iwlwifi firmware error in SYNC CMD TDLS_CONFIG_CMD (Intel 8265 on Lenovo X1 Carbon)

2020-09-17 Thread Vaclav Rehak
Public bug reported:

I am experiencing almost 100% reproducible iwlwifi firmware crashes on
my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th, model 20KHS03800 connected to Turris
Omnia router on 5Gh. Anytime I send file from Android phone using
kdeconnect, my laptop disconnects from wifi.

The issue seems to be exactly same as
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=203055
In fact, when I replace 36.9f0a2d68.0 firmware shipped with Bionic with the one
from https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=203055#c1 the issue is gone.

Logs from the failing version:

[Bug 1896154] [NEW] btrfs: trimming a btrfs device which has been shrunk previously fails and fills root disk with garbage data

2020-09-17 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Public bug reported:

BugLink: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1896154

[Impact]

Since 929be17a9b49 ("btrfs: Switch btrfs_trim_free_extents to
find_first_clear_extent_bit") which landed in 5.3, btrfs wont trim a
range that has already been trimmed, and will instead go looking for a
range where the CHUNK_TRIMMED and CHUNK_ALLOCATED bits aren't set.

If a device had been shrunk, the CHUNK_TRIMMED and CHUNK_ALLOCATED bits
are never cleared, which means that btrfs could go looking for a range
to trim which is beyond the new device size. This leads to an underflow
in a length calculation for the range to trim, and we will end up
trimming past the device's boundary.

This has an unfortunate side effect of mangling and filling the root
disk with garbage data, and it will not stop until the root disk is
totally filled, and makes the instance unusable.

[Fix]

The issue was fixed in the following commit, in 5.9-rc1:

commit c57dd1f2f6a7cd1bb61802344f59ccdc5278c983
Author: Qu Wenruo
Date: Fri Jul 31 19:29:11 2020 +0800
Subject: btrfs: trim: fix underflow in trim length to prevent access beyond
device boundary
Link:
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/c57dd1f2f6a7cd1bb61802344f59ccdc5278c983

The fix clears the CHUNK_TRIMMED and CHUNK_ALLOCATED bits when a device
is being shrunk, and performs some additional checks to ensure we do not
trim past the device size boundary.

The fix was backported to 5.7.17 and 5.8.3 upstream stable, but it seems
5.4 was skipped.

The patch required a minor backport to 5.4, with the CHUNK_STATE_MASK
#define moving files back to fs/btrfs/extent_io.h, as the file had been
renamed in later kernels.

[Testcase]

The easiest way to reproduce is to use a cloud instance that supplies a
real NVMe drive, that supports TRIM and block discards.

Warning, this will fill the root disk with garbage data, ONLY run on a
throwaway instance!

Run the following commands:

$ dev=/dev/nvme0n1
$ mnt=/mnt
$ mkfs.btrfs -f $dev -b 10G
$ mount $dev $mnt
$ fstrim $mnt
$ btrfs filesystem resize 1:-1G $mnt
$ fstrim $mnt

The last command will appear to hang, while the root filesystem will
begin filling with garbage data. Once the root filesystem fills, you
will see the following error:

fstrim: /mnt: FITRIM ioctl failed: Input/output error
/dev/sda1 29G 29G 0 100% /

A test kernel is available from the following PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf293389-test

If you install the test kernel, then the final fstrim command completes
successfully in a short amount of time.

[Regression Potential]

If a regression were to occur, it could affect users who are attempting
to shrink or resize their btrfs volume. Most users already understand
that changing the size of a volume is a risky operation, and would have
a backup.

If a regression occurs, then there is potential for data loss when users
resize or shrink their btrfs volumes. Standard volume creation would not
be affected.

The patches have been backported to upstream stable, and are trusted by
the community.

[Bug 1896102] Re: gnome-shell crashes together with emacs-gtk regularly

2020-09-17 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1896098] Re: Lenovo P1G3 - unable to select system speakers when headset plugged into audio jack

2020-09-17 Thread Hui Wang
I could reproduce this problem with padme-3 machine.

But it looks like a hardware design limitation, plugging
headset/headphone into the audio jack, the speaker will be muted by
hardware signal (like a enable signal)?

I checked both pulseaudio and alsa driver, there is no obvious problem.

BTW, How does it work under windows?

[Bug 1896139] [NEW] vsync doesn't work with nvidia binary drivers when running multiple monitors

2020-09-17 Thread Tessa
Public bug reported:

I gather this has been an issue for a long time, but I'm just running
into it now. basically, the nvidia binary drivers, no matter the
version, don't seem to properly handle vsync if you have 2 displays. no
combination of options seems to fix this so that it works correctly,
there's just always massive tearing in games and videos.

2020-09-17 Thread Alex Murray
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1896138] [NEW] nautilus doesn't display thumbnails on network share

2020-09-17 Thread Tessa
Public bug reported:

I've got nautilus configured to display thumbnails on network shares
(prefs -> search -> thumbnails -> all files), but in 20.04 it
never shows thumbnails on my samba network shares. Not sure what broke
since previous ubuntu releases, but it's definitely not working now.
local thumbnail generation and display works fine still, so there isn't
an issue with the thumbnail generation itself as far as I can tell.

you need to manually select it as output once, then pulseaudio will
remember uer's preference. Then unplug and replug the monitor, the

[Bug 1891318] Re: [SRU] Update to vala 0.48.9 in focal

2020-09-17 Thread Robie Basak
Following discussion, the SRU team has concluded that Vala is not
considered part of the standing GNOME microrelease exception. If you'd
still like to update Vala in Focal, please justify this request on its
own merits instead of relying on GNOME's standing exception. I'd also
expect a plan to rebuild reverse dependencies, since without that a Vala
update is mostly useless, and we risk latent regressions in case those
reverse dependencies are ever rebuilt in the future.

[Bug 1896133] [NEW] [Audio Playback] right channel attenuated after random length of time

2020-09-17 Thread Andrew Scott
Public bug reported:

After playing sound for a while (minutes, not seconds), the right
channel will become attenuated.

Restoring balance can be done by unplugging the headphones (from the
built-in sound card) or disconnecting the external DAC and reconnecting
it.

Balance can be restored by altering balance in pavucontrol, but if you
balance by increasing the right side volume, it introduces a lot of
distortion.

Same behavior observed using both the internal sound device as well as
the Sound Blaster USB sound device, so it's in the mixing software
somewhere.

you may be missing the package libip4tc2 which provides the lib
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libip4tc.so.2

however, the systemd package includes the libip4tc2 package, so it
should be installed.

[Bug 1852441] Re: In bionic, one of the ceph packages installed causes chrony to auto-install even on lxd

commit 60a9a4f27aa1cddd717431abae7a26c46f5f8bd5
Author: Ponnuvel Palaniyappan

Remove chrony if inside a container

When running ceph-mon in containers, best practice is
to have chrony/ntp configured and installed on the bare
metal and then have the container trust the system
clock, as the container should not manage the system
clock.

The chrony package get installed automatically as
part of the dependencies of other packages, which
gets removed in this change.

Also contains related changes for charms.ceph.
