Hmm - I thought I had checked that in comment #9 where I used a bigger canonistack env. But locally in KVM guests I can show that 1 vpu - our fail 2 vcpu - working And since we are dealing with software meant at parallelization it might be that this just needs at least 2 cpus to run properly. Hi Terry, I have reinstalled on the new hardware. The source zpool disks are unchanged; just moved from the old machine and imported. [Bug 1911614] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.04.1 images use linux-generic-hwe-20.04 instead of linux-generic
Public bug reported: Just as the title says, the 20.04 and 20.04.1 images use the HWE version of linux-generic resulting in upgrades to the 5.8 series kernel. This seems to effect Ubuntu only, or I should say I checked the Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu iso manifests which all correctly list linux-generic. Also HWE is not truly complete without the accompanying HWE Xstack. I checked all the documentation I could find and this was clearly not intentional. In fact the manifest for Ubuntu Focal Beta still used linux-generic, so this got messed up some time between April 3, 2020 and April 23, 2020. Here's just one example of the documentation for kernel support in Focal LTS: https://ubuntu.com/about/release-cycle#ubuntu-kernel-release-cycle Installations performed with 20.04 and 20.04.1 media were supposed to remain on the 5.4 series kernel throughout Focal's 5 year lifespan as had been the case since HWE was introduced. The first step in fixing this needs to be stopping fresh installs of Focal using the 20.04 and 20.04.1 media from immediately upgrading to the 5.8 series kernel. It might be a little tricky to revert users from 5.8 to 5.4, but there have been reports of breakage, particularly concerning Broadcom wifi drivers and some graphics problems. But the graphics problems could also be exacerbated by the lack of the matching HWE Xstack? At any rate it's a bug. ** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1911614 Title: Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.04.1 images use linux-generic-hwe-20.04 instead of linux-generic To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-meta/+bug/1911614/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1909603] Re: Occasionally fwupd-refresh.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'
As mentioned in #8 there has been several upstream discussions and it was concluded this is due to a CDN mirroring issue causing problems with the metadata design used in 1.3.x or earlier versions. There was an updated design added into fwupd 1.4.x and later that will avoid the CDN mirroring issue. So this bug does not affect groovy (1.4.x) or hirsute (1.5.x). The reason that this started to "show up" in 1.3.x on focal is because focal also introduced a new systemd unit fwupd-refresh.service and fwupd-refresh.timer. These will download metadata regularly and notify the user via the motd of any devices with firmware updates. That being said it's *definitely* occurred on fwupdmgr or gnome-software as well which can be seen from the other issues linked in #8. For anyone encountering this, a few workarounds: 1) If you're not ever intending on using fwupd on your machine, you can remove it # sudo apt purge fwupd 2) If your machine does support updates and you'll just manually check for updates, mask the service to prevent it from running. # sudo systemctl mask fwupd-refresh.service 3) Modify the fwupd-refresh.service unit to set "1" as a valid return code. This would paper over the issues when there are CDN problems and potentially mean you'll be a day or two behind in notification for new firmware updates. The most "proper" solution in Ubuntu should be a backport of 1.4.x or 1.5.x to focal. Due to the requirements and previous agreements in SRU policy this will require alignment with the technical board as well as a MIR for libjcat which is in universe for focal. [Bug 1911601] Re: I have a laptop with a broken fan. It is affecting my use of rufus. Can you send me an o/s to install?
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. This package failure was due to problems with your installation media, and subsequent squashfs errors encountered reading data from it, eg. look in the logs and you'll see messages like these :- Jan 14 01:43:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 534.911501] SQUASHFS error: zlib decompression failed, data probably corrupt Jan 14 01:43:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 534.911506] SQUASHFS error: squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x43db3ae Usually this means an invalid ISO, or a bad write to your install media, usually detected during the ISO validation (prior to write; https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-verify-ubuntu#0) or the CasperMD5CheckResult which actually passed in your case. Problems can also occur if using a VM with insufficient RAM supplied. For Support, this bug report can be converted into a question, or you can ask a question on https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. [Bug 1910709] Re: DKMS linux-headers-5.8.0-34-generic update brokes nvidia-340
@ihler [and same comment may apply to others...] How have you ended up with -hwe kernel getting installed anyhow? Default behaviour of particular install iso image? Because clicked some option somewhere? Some sort of 'unintended/accident' and only later found the consequence of k5.8 auto-installing? Using a non-standard ubuntu install image? This situation will need investigating as we don't want similar mess occurring in another 6months when following HWE kernel goes into 18.04.3 and so-on!... I'd prefer that 20.04.2 provided users option to install with kernel 5.4LTS and stay there for older hardware. I note, ubuntu-derivative LinuxMint have decided to do this and not by-default follow the HWE chain, but providing an initial -edge image with kernel 5.8 for those who really need it. May be better that those on older hardware move back to LTS 5.4 kernel and not keep following HWE? May be that legacy drivers can still be bought forward to further HWE kernels all the way to the final HWE series...? We will see, I guess, but I'd like to see these breakages/messes avoided ongoing. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1910709 Title: DKMS linux-headers-5.8.0-34-generic update brokes nvidia-340 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-340/+bug/1910709/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal: apport-collect 1911578 When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu- bug' and the name of the package affected. [Bug 1911578] [NEW] Cannot install Ubuntu 16.04 Alongside Pre-Installed Windows 10
Public bug reported: Hello. I am trying to install Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS from USB (which has been used successfully in the past) alongside pre-installed Windows 10 on a new Acer Aspire TC-895-EB11 desktop. I expected that the install process would recognize the free partition created on the GPT disk, but it does not. I reviewed and followed the steps in this guide (https://askubuntu.com/questions/221835/how-do-i-install-ubuntu- alongside-a-pre-installed-windows-with-uefi) - no change. I disabled Secure Boot in the BIOS - no change. The drive & partitions do not appear to be recognized by Ubuntu. As recommended in the guide, I am submitting this bug report. Any assistance would be much appreciated! I only purchased this desktop to run Ubuntu, but would prefer to keep the Windows 10 partition usable in case I ever want to use it. [Bug 1895643] Re: Backport Thunderbird 78 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS
@osomon: I'd also kindly ask for more information on what's blocking this update. Thunderbird version 68 - which is the standard mail solution shipping with Ubuntu 20.04 right now - is over 6.5 months old. The upstream version got numerous security fixes over the last half year. Doesn't feel good to have to rely on software for communications that stopped getting updates for such a long time. I really don't want to be pushy, because I know Ubuntu is free software, but I'd like to express my worries that this for many users important question (current versions of browser and mail) doesn't have the focus it should have. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1895643 Title: Backport Thunderbird 78 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1895643/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1801267] Re: regina-normal crashes on startup
Hi Robie, Logan - thanks for looking after this. I've tested 5.1-2build2 (amd64) on a bionic machine and this fixes the problem for me. Checks performed: - The GUI /usr/bin/regina-gui starts without crashing; - File -> Open Example -> Introductory Examples loads the sample file correctly; - The mathematical objects that are stored in this file are displayed correctly when opened in the GUI; - In particular, graph visualisation works correctly (for instance, double click on "Poincaré Homology Sphere", visit the Skeleton -> Graphs tab, and verify that the GUI displays a complete graph on five vertices); - The embedded python script at the bottom of the sample file opens and runs correctly. So everything looks good to me. I will change the tag from verification- needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic. [Bug 1910709] Re: DKMS linux-headers-5.8.0-34-generic update brokes nvidia-340
For what its' worth, I built the nvidia-340_340.108-0ubuntu5 package (includes patches to go up to kernel 5.9 apparently) on Focal20.04 -- just using the groovy-updates version and renumbering it back to 20.04.0test0 instead of a 20.10. version. The full source and set of debs is here:- https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/nvidia-340-focal/ You only seem to need the 'nvidia-340' deb [ https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/nvidia-340-focal/nvidia-340_340.108-0ubuntu5.20.04.0test0_amd64.deb ] for basic usage of the driver, but the full set of debs and source package is provided above. This appears to solve the build and install problem on 20.04 based system, with ubuntu kernel 5.8 series installed. [Bug 1889314] Re: feature request: bionic autoinstall
Uh not sure how I missed this. Currently there are no plans to backport the changes required to bionic. [Bug 1910920] Re: no soundcard present with linux-image-5.8.0-37-generic
The fix identified by https://askubuntu.com/a/1307216/1168625 works (tested on two workstations). Quoting: The snd-intel-dspcfg module ... had been moved to the linux- modules-extra- package. So I had to install that package, since it hasn't been installed by default since 5.4.0-60.67 sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-5.8.0-36-generic (or use pkcon) I believe there are some duplicates to this issue that have popped up since the release of 5.8.0-37-generic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1910920 Title: no soundcard present with linux-image-5.8.0-37-generic To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1910920/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
