[Bug 1905166] Re: systemd-shutdown cannot detach DM

2021-01-13 Thread smartman
Same issue here.
5.8.0-36-generic #40~20.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 6 10:15:55 UTC 2021 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I had issue with glxgears and some other apps that failed to start. When
restarting then the computer(Lenovo P73) hanged. I think the same
hanging behaviour has happened before.

Not sure if this OpenGL issue is somehow related.

[Bug 1910709] Re: DKMS linux-headers-5.8.0-34-generic update brokes nvidia-340

2021-01-13 Thread Timo Aaltonen
I'll upload the groovy version to focal

** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-340 (Ubuntu Focal)
Assignee: Alberto Milone (albertomilone) => Timo Aaltonen (tjaalton)

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ nvidia-340 dkms fails to build against the current HWE kernel in focal,
regressing the user experience.
+
+ [Test case]
+ Install the update, check that the dkms builds and works.
+
+ [Where things could go wrong]
+ The changes only add support for newer kernels so that the module can build,
and it's identical to what's in groovy. In theory it could break the build
against 5.4 but that's highly unlikely.
+
+
+ --
+
Last linux kernel update "linux-headers-5.8.0-34-generic" broke
nvidia-340 driver and Desktop access. In make log:

[Bug 1911400] Re: autopkgtests broken in hirsute - error: int32 scalar cannot be indexed with .

I found that while local containers work, local VMs fail.
In General it seems it is something that is broken in VM's only - odd but
interesting.

Hmm - I thought I had checked that in comment #9 where I used a bigger
canonistack env.
But locally in KVM guests I can show that
1 vpu - our fail
2 vcpu - working

And since we are dealing with software meant at parallelization it might be
that this just needs at least 2 cpus to run properly.
That also explains why all the container based tests worked as they see more
CPUs.

[Bug 1911614] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.04.1 images use linux-generic-hwe-20.04 instead of linux-generic

2021-01-13 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

If you look at the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (focal fossa) release notes you'll
see

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FocalFossa/ReleaseNotes

"Ubuntu Desktop flavour now always tracks HWE kernel (hardware
enablement). It means that from 20.04.2 release Ubuntu Desktop will gain
new major kernel versions every 6 months through to summer of 2022."

You haven't indicated if you're talking Ubuntu Desktop, if so that was
announced & is expected behavior (at least as I understand it).

Please execute the following command only once, as it will automatically
gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1911614

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Re: [Bug 1910588] Re: rsync backup hang

2021-01-13 Thread Jack Whitehead
Hi Terry,

I have reinstalled on the new hardware. The source zpool disks are
unchanged; just moved from the old machine and imported. I have
restarted three times since and have experienced no failures. Install
media was the same 20.10 USB drive that was used with the failing machine.

I think this problem can be attributed hardware.

Thanks, Jack

[Bug 1911614] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04 and 20.04.1 images use linux-generic-hwe-20.04 instead of linux-generic

2021-01-13 Thread Erick Brunzell
Public bug reported:

Just as the title says, the 20.04 and 20.04.1 images use the HWE version
of linux-generic resulting in upgrades to the 5.8 series kernel. This
seems to effect Ubuntu only, or I should say I checked the Kubuntu,
Ubuntu Mate, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu iso manifests which all correctly list
linux-generic. Also HWE is not truly complete without the accompanying
HWE Xstack.

I checked all the documentation I could find and this was clearly not
intentional. In fact the manifest for Ubuntu Focal Beta still used
linux-generic, so this got messed up some time between April 3, 2020 and
April 23, 2020. Here's just one example of the documentation for kernel
support in Focal LTS:

https://ubuntu.com/about/release-cycle#ubuntu-kernel-release-cycle

Installations performed with 20.04 and 20.04.1 media were supposed to
remain on the 5.4 series kernel throughout Focal's 5 year lifespan as
had been the case since HWE was introduced. The first step in fixing
this needs to be stopping fresh installs of Focal using the 20.04 and
20.04.1 media from immediately upgrading to the 5.8 series kernel.

It might be a little tricky to revert users from 5.8 to 5.4, but there
have been reports of breakage, particularly concerning Broadcom wifi
drivers and some graphics problems. But the graphics problems could also
be exacerbated by the lack of the matching HWE Xstack? At any rate it's
a bug.

[Bug 1909603] Re: Occasionally fwupd-refresh.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'

2021-01-13 Thread Mario Limonciello
As mentioned in #8 there has been several upstream discussions and it
was concluded this is due to a CDN mirroring issue causing problems with
the metadata design used in 1.3.x or earlier versions.

There was an updated design added into fwupd 1.4.x and later that will
avoid the CDN mirroring issue. So this bug does not affect groovy
(1.4.x) or hirsute (1.5.x).

The reason that this started to "show up" in 1.3.x on focal is because
focal also introduced a new systemd unit fwupd-refresh.service and
fwupd-refresh.timer. These will download metadata regularly and notify
the user via the motd of any devices with firmware updates.

That being said it's *definitely* occurred on fwupdmgr or gnome-software
as well which can be seen from the other issues linked in #8.

For anyone encountering this, a few workarounds:
1) If you're not ever intending on using fwupd on your machine, you can remove
it
# sudo apt purge fwupd

2) If your machine does support updates and you'll just manually check for
updates, mask the service to prevent it from running.
# sudo systemctl mask fwupd-refresh.service

3) Modify the fwupd-refresh.service unit to set "1" as a valid return
code. This would paper over the issues when there are CDN problems and
potentially mean you'll be a day or two behind in notification for new
firmware updates.

The most "proper" solution in Ubuntu should be a backport of 1.4.x or 1.5.x to
focal. Due to the requirements and previous agreements in SRU policy this will
require alignment with the technical board as well as a MIR for libjcat which
is in universe for focal. It's in main for groovy and later.

[Bug 1911601] Re: I have a laptop with a broken fan. It is affecting my use of rufus. Can you send me an o/s to install?

2021-01-13 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This package failure was due to problems with your installation media,
and subsequent squashfs errors encountered reading data from it, eg.
look in the logs and you'll see messages like these :-

Jan 14 01:43:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 534.911501] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
Jan 14 01:43:06 ubuntu kernel: [ 534.911506] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x43db3ae

Usually this means an invalid ISO, or a bad write to your install media,
usually detected during the ISO validation (prior to write;
https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-verify-ubuntu#0)
or the CasperMD5CheckResult which actually passed in your case.
Problems can also occur if using a VM with insufficient RAM supplied.

functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

(No details were provided as to your release, which installer you're
asking about (Ubuntu and flavors currently have four supported

[Bug 1911607] [NEW] uprage 14.04 to 16.04 on 32-bit machine failed

Public bug reported:

I'm attempring to upgrade from Ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04, after Mattia
Rizzolo pointed out to me that 16.04 is OK for 32-bit machines.

The message from Distribution Upggrade was
Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

I do use a few non-Ubuntu packages, how can I discover which ones are
causing the problem, please?

Cheers, Nevil (and thanks very much for your support)

[Bug 1910709] Re: DKMS linux-headers-5.8.0-34-generic update brokes nvidia-340

2021-01-13 Thread Simon Iremonger
@ihler [and same comment may apply to others...]

How have you ended up with -hwe kernel getting installed anyhow?
Default behaviour of particular install iso image? Because clicked some
option somewhere? Some sort of 'unintended/accident' and only later
found the consequence of k5.8 auto-installing? Using a non-standard
ubuntu install image? This situation will need investigating as we
don't want similar mess occurring in another 6months when following HWE
kernel goes into 18.04.3 and so-on!...

I'd prefer that 20.04.2 provided users option to install with kernel
5.4LTS and stay there for older hardware. I note, ubuntu-derivative
LinuxMint have decided to do this and not by-default follow the HWE
chain, but providing an initial -edge image with kernel 5.8 for those
who really need it.

May be better that those on older hardware move back to LTS 5.4 kernel
and not keep following HWE? May be that legacy drivers can still be
bought forward to further HWE kernels all the way to the final HWE
series...? We will see, I guess, but I'd like to see these
breakages/messes avoided ongoing.

[Bug 1908167] Re: [SRU] pulseaudio: the headset-mic or heapdhone-mic could not be selected automatically if there is no internal mic

2021-01-13 Thread Hui Wang
@Robie,

The Hirsute doesn't have this regression since I cherry-picked the
upstream patch to Hirsute, all needed patches are in the Hirsute
already. But for groovy and focal, the patch can't be applied to them
without changing, so I backported the patch to groovy and focal, the
regression is introduced when backporting.

[Bug 1911578] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 16.04 Alongside Pre-Installed Windows 10

2021-01-13 Thread Daniel LeBlanc
Hi Chris / Steve.

Thanks you for your quick response.

Chris - I had left the install window open and ran 'apport-collect 1911578'
within a terminal as requested and authorized it. The window appeared
indicating that it was collecting data and then the python job crashed:

dpkg-query: no packages found matching linux
Traceback
...
AttributeError: ConfigParser instance has no attribute 'read_string'

I am not sure if any meaningful information was gathered and uploaded.

Steve - NVME appears to be a storage device connected directly to the PCI bus
(https://www.howtogeek.com/404627/what-are-nvme-drives-and-should-you-buy-one/).
This desktop has a standard 1TB drive that is SATA-connected.

If it is likely that Ubuntu 16.04 is too old to recognize my new hardware then
I can give Ubuntu 18.xx LTS a try. I have 8 other systems running Ubuntu 16.04
and have not had any reason to upgrade to date.

Thanks!

[Bug 1911578] Re: Cannot install Ubuntu 16.04 Alongside Pre-Installed Windows 10

2021-01-13 Thread Steve Langasek
If your laptop has an nvme drive in it, the kernel in Ubuntu 16.04 may
be too old to recognize it.

This is not something that will be fixed. There are two newer LTS
releases of Ubuntu available if you need support for newer hardware in
the installer.

Regardless, hardware detection is a kernel function, not a ubiquity
function, so reassigning to the correct package.

FYI: If you no longer have the attempted-install system running, I
would suggest re-trying the install, and if the error re-occurs, then
run the `apport-collect` I suggested in the prior comment. It won't be
the same logs, but the logs of the reoccurrence will be as valuable (as
will likely be the same issue).

2021-01-13 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1911578

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

I've marked this incomplete, once you have completed the apport-collect
step, you can change the status back to "New". If you believe I'm in
error or otherwise, please leave a comment as to why. Using built-in
tools on the Ubuntu ISOs and install media, cause logs & details of your
system to be uploaded, the `apport-collect` when run on the machine you
installed/attempted-install on will attempt to get details as to your
issue, Currently no such details are available

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your
problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at

[Bug 1911578] [NEW] Cannot install Ubuntu 16.04 Alongside Pre-Installed Windows 10

2021-01-13 Thread Daniel LeBlanc
Public bug reported:

Hello.

I am trying to install Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS from USB (which has been used
successfully in the past) alongside pre-installed Windows 10 on a new
Acer Aspire TC-895-EB11 desktop.

I expected that the install process would recognize the free partition
created on the GPT disk, but it does not.

I reviewed and followed the steps in this guide
(https://askubuntu.com/questions/221835/how-do-i-install-ubuntu-
alongside-a-pre-installed-windows-with-uefi) - no change. I disabled
Secure Boot in the BIOS - no change. The drive & partitions do not
appear to be recognized by Ubuntu.

As recommended in the guide, I am submitting this bug report. Any
assistance would be much appreciated! I only purchased this desktop to
run Ubuntu, but would prefer to keep the Windows 10 partition usable in
case I ever want to use it.

Thanks!

[Bug 1895643] Re: Backport Thunderbird 78 to 20.04 LTS and 18.04 LTS

2021-01-13 Thread Richard Muller
@osomon: I'd also kindly ask for more information on what's blocking
this update. Thunderbird version 68 - which is the standard mail
solution shipping with Ubuntu 20.04 right now - is over 6.5 months old.
The upstream version got numerous security fixes over the last half
year. Doesn't feel good to have to rely on software for communications
that stopped getting updates for such a long time. I really don't want
to be pushy, because I know Ubuntu is free software, but I'd like to
express my worries that this for many users important question (current
versions of browser and mail) doesn't have the focus it should have.

[Bug 1801267] Re: regina-normal crashes on startup

2021-01-13 Thread Ben Burton
Hi Robie, Logan - thanks for looking after this.

I've tested 5.1-2build2 (amd64) on a bionic machine and this fixes the
problem for me.

Checks performed:
- The GUI /usr/bin/regina-gui starts without crashing;
- File -> Open Example -> Introductory Examples loads the sample file correctly;
- The mathematical objects that are stored in this file are displayed correctly
when opened in the GUI;
- In particular, graph visualisation works correctly (for instance, double
click on "Poincaré Homology Sphere", visit the Skeleton -> Graphs tab, and
verify that the GUI displays a complete graph on five vertices);
- The embedded python script at the bottom of the sample file opens and runs
correctly.

So everything looks good to me. I will change the tag from verification-
needed-bionic to verification-done-bionic.

Best regards - Ben.

[Bug 1910956] Re: bionic: recompiling linux-aws kernel fails due to missing packages on third party repository

2021-01-13 Thread Francis Ginther
The build issue is due a mismatch in package versions for those nvidia
drivers as you indicated. The driver contents are the same, the mismatch
is in the version strings.

The version strings can be brought in sync by running:

$ apt-get source linux-image-5.4.0-1035-aws
$ cd linux-aws-5.4-5.4.0
$ bash ./update-version-dkms updates
$ fakeroot debian/rules binary

Note: this will complain about not being a git tree, but will still
update `debian/dkms-versions`.

[Bug 1875062] Re: [20.04] Keyboard layout not enabled immediately during installation when typing username/password

2021-01-13 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Unfortunately this bug seems to have resurrected in hirsute. It's
actually even worse than before: When testing in a VM it uses *always*
the English (US) keyboard layout in the window for entering name and
password, irrespective of my previous choices of display language and
keyboard layout.

Probably I should have submitted a new bug, but since a few users who
were attentive to the issue previously are subscribed to this one, it
would be great if others could test the latest hirsute build in this
respect. Maybe it's just me...

[Bug 1910709] Re: DKMS linux-headers-5.8.0-34-generic update brokes nvidia-340

2021-01-13 Thread Simon Iremonger
For what its' worth, I built the nvidia-340_340.108-0ubuntu5 package
(includes patches to go up to kernel 5.9 apparently) on Focal20.04 --
just using the groovy-updates version and renumbering it back to
20.04.0test0 instead of a 20.10. version.

The full source and set of debs is here:-

https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/nvidia-340-focal/

You only seem to need the 'nvidia-340' deb [
https://www.iremonger.me.uk/noidx/nvidia-340-focal/nvidia-340_340.108-0ubuntu5.20.04.0test0_amd64.deb
] for basic usage of the driver, but the full set of debs and source package
is provided above.
This appears to solve the build and install problem on 20.04 based system, with
ubuntu kernel 5.8 series installed.
By all means use and test this if you like, I hope ubuntu-devs will put the
same or equivalent into focal-proposed and focal-updates very soon!.

referring to my ubuntu based Linux Mint 20.04 problem. Since yesterday, I
have removed and installed Mint 20.1 and find a little error with my
initramfs but I have nothing to worry about. I will file this in my archive

[Bug 1911352] Re: Black screen on boot after 20.04 upgraded to kernel 5.8

Good data point, thanks. It looks like there are some significant
differences between the 9550 and the 9560 that could explain that:

1) Next generation CPU: i7-6700HQ on the 9550 vs i7-7700HQ on the 9560
2) Intel HD graphics 530 on the 9550 vs 630 on the 9560

[Bug 1911476] [NEW] Groovy update: upstream stable patchset 2021-01-13

2021-01-13 Thread Kamal Mostafa
Public bug reported:

SRU Justification

Impact:
The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to

a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream

[Bug 1761013] Re: java crashed with SIGABRT in ImageStrings::find()

2021-01-13 Thread Tiago Stürmer Daitx
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu
since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been
fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test
it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is
still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running only once:

apport-collect 1761013

and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue,
specially the generated core file.

Re: [Bug 1911471] [NEW] tarantool: FTBFS on arm64: fiber.c:47:10: fatal error: x86intrin.h: No such file or directory

2021-01-13 Thread Roman Tsisyk
Hi Brian,

Thanks for the update!

Unfortunately, the ARM64 support in Tarantool is temporarily broken.
I had a talk with the team and they promised to ARM support in Q1 2021.

Can we disable ARM64 for now?

the changes required to bionic. It's probably possible to make an iso
that does autoinstall by putting an /autoinstall.yaml file in the right
place -- but I haven't tried it.

[Bug 1906738] Re: alsa/sdw: add support for tgl_3_in_1_sdca soundwire machine

2021-01-13 Thread B
Is this bug relevant to Dell Latitude 9510? It appears that the sound
card is not detected using 5.10.0-1009.10 kernel. I attached my alsa-
info just in case.

[Bug 1910920] Re: no soundcard present with linux-image-5.8.0-37-generic

2021-01-13 Thread Daniel Davis
The fix identified by https://askubuntu.com/a/1307216/1168625 works
(tested on two workstations).

Quoting: The snd-intel-dspcfg module ... had been moved to the linux-
modules-extra- package. So I had to install that package, since it
hasn't been installed by default since 5.4.0-60.67

sudo apt install linux-modules-extra-5.8.0-36-generic

(or use pkcon)

I believe there are some duplicates to this issue that have popped up
since the release of 5.8.0-37-generic
