[Bug 1912122] Re: /var/log/dmesg is 0644, should be 0640 to match new DMESG_RESTRICT restrictions

2021-01-19 Thread Robie Basak
Is this really worth an SRU to Groovy? One could consider the change to
be fully implemented since Hirsute only, and Groovy will EOL before long
anyway. Otherwise there's a risk that we'll break users' existing
automation that is already live against Groovy.

[Bug 1906086] Re: [HP EliteOne 800 G2 23-in Touch AiO] Display is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
No that probably won't help... unless you can:

1. Change to legacy BIOS mode.

2. Try booting Ubuntu from USB.

3. If everything suddenly works then reinstall Ubuntu.

4. If the problem persists then change the BIOS mode back to UEFI.

[Bug 1880749] Re: python3 virtualenvs include (broken) bundled pip deps

2021-01-19 Thread Stefano Rivera
I think we can get the missing toml resolved.

Agreed that that's really ugly that the virtualenvs include all of the pip
deps. That was an issue in the early virtualenv 20 days, that took a while to
get the necessary upstream support for cleaner de-vendoring. But messyness on
its own can't justify broader changes to a stable release. The process for
these changes is a Stable Release Update (SRU), see the policy linked below.
We need to avoid breaking things for users of stable releases, once they are
released. The change has to be proven to be worth the risk. I'll need some more
concrete examples of the impact, to push through an SRU. And to show that the
SRU resolves the issues.

[Bug 1911352] Re: Black screen on boot after 20.04 upgraded to kernel 5.8

2021-01-19 Thread Charles Green
I've got the same issue on a system76 gazelle - I just reinstalled 20.04
hoping that this would fix the issue, but the 5.8.0-38 kernel does not
complete the boot cycle by itself.

I have found that switching to tty2 and then back to tty1 causes the
boot to complete

[Bug 1912168] Re: please merge ppp 2.4.9 for 21.04 and then consider ipv6 default fix for SRU

2021-01-19 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
I wanted to make sure it isn't missed when I filed the bug from the mailing
list discussion.
I'd have thought looking at the longer list of fixes that it would be great to
have that in hirsute, but the triage and prio is your call to make.

Even if you push it off of HH, you'll still have a look in early 21.10
+SRUs then right?

[Bug 1912034] Re: At end of install process, installer said "fatal error"

2021-01-19 Thread Ken T
Thanks, Chris. I guess we can chalk this one up as an edge case, as I
imagine that most folks just install one (or maybe 2) OS's, and maybe
people who are doing multi-boot installs could be assumed to know enough
to easily sort that out without further prompting/guidance from the
installer itself.

I suspect that in my case, the easier option might simply be to back up
my data to an external drive, then obliterate the existing partition
table and just install Mate freshly over the top of it. A crude method
perhaps, but it should work easily enough.

Thanks again for your help - unless you want to comment further, I am
happy to close this ticket now.

Cheers,
Ken.

[Bug 1880749] Re: python3 virtualenvs include (broken) bundled pip deps

2021-01-19 Thread Rick Elrod
The impact of the pep517 issue isn't too big of an issue for us- we can
work around it (installing toml).

The "impact" is that we have a test scenario which runs `pip install
pep517` (reports already installed) and then tries to do `python -m
pep517.build --binary --out-dir dist .` (which fails due to the toml
issue).

As mentioned, we can work around this by installing toml. I'm more
worried about the broader issue in the report, that virtualenvs are
dirty in the first place, this limits their utility :(

[Bug 1909898] Re: No response from TouchPad in 'Acer Aspire 5 A517-52G-79Z5' after installing Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

2021-01-19 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hello nora,

from your dmesg in commment #10:
[0.00] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-5.4.0-58-generic
root=/dev/mapper/vgubuntu-root ro i8042.reset quiet splash vt.handoff=7

it looks like you're still using the "i8042.reset" parameter like in
comment #4, not the "i8042.nopnp". Can you help us to check again?

If "i8042.nopnp" is not working for you (which you should see in your
dmesg if added properly), the last trial and error would be adding
"i8042.noloop i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.reset" to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

Thanks

2021-01-19 Thread mvaldez
This bug was fixed in sshfs 2.8 which I think was included in Ubuntu
18.04 (I may be wrong about the version of Ubuntu). The max password
lenght when using the "password_stdin" option was increased to 1024
characters.

Today I tested with Ubuntu 20.04 and it works correctly.

[Bug 1911463] Re: Can no longer successfully download Flash during postinst

2021-01-19 Thread Thomas Ward
Łukasz:

Up until the EOL date, Flash provided copies of the PPAPI and NPAPI
plugins on their Flash Debug Downloads page. Since that date, all
versions of the plugins have been yanked (even in the archived
versions!) and only the standalone executables exist for the running of
Flash files. Attempting to get the older versions gives you a page
stating "The Flash Player archive page has been decommissioned.
Customers requiring Flash Player can visit our download page for the
latest available version" - which in turn points to the EOL page

While *technically* I have a copy from the last full site snag I did of
the debug binaries on the 28th of December, since Adobe and everyone
yanked support the only way to **get** those binaries to install the
NPAPI or PPAPI plugins is to have an older copy already downloaded and
available.

With the major players of the browser market (Edge, Firefox, Chrome,
Chromium, etc.) all yanking the plugin and forcing it to be permanently
disabled or removed in a default environment anyways, and the only
solution to bypass that is to disable EOL removal and plugin disabling
flags in Chrome/Firefox, and then install a variant from the Partner
repository from August, or if you're me manually install the PPAPI or
NPAPI plugins where they have to go. However, since 100% of the
universe does NOT have access to my last-version-of-flash-plugin
downloads, that invalidates the ability for MOST users to get the
plugin.

In either case, replacing this with a dummy package should be done -
with the OEM request and the effective killing of the Partner repository
flash version, older versions would have the same problem as any other,
and only a manual installation of the NPAPI or PPAPI plugins **if you
happened to have them prior to the yank of them by Adobe** is the only
way to still 'get' Flash support it seems.

[Bug 1909950] Re: TCP connections never close

2021-01-19 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hello,

A another user has reported a very similar issue. They operate bind9
resolvers in both recursive and authoritative configurations, and
occasionally, their servers will stop responding to TCP requests.

UDP still operates as normal, but TCP connections will time out.

named is still listening on port 53 for both TCP and UDP:

$ sudo ss -lnp | grep 192.168.122.2:53
udp UNCONN 3840 0 192.168.122.2:53 0.0.0.0:* users:(("named",pid=3054136,fd=14))
tcp LISTEN 11 10 192.168.122.2:53 0.0.0.0:*
users:(("named",pid=3054136,fd=42),("named",pid=3054136,fd=41))

$ dig +tcp ubuntu.com @192.168.122.2
;; Connection to 192.168.122.2#53(192.168.122.2) for ubuntu.com failed: timed
out.

I was reading through the logs, and they use stunnel as a proxy, and
stunnel logs:

Jan 04 22:32:02 stunnel[3186033]: LOG3[1261474]: s_connect: s_poll_wait
127.0.0.1:53: TIMEOUTconnect exceeded
Jan 04 22:32:02 stunnel[3186033]: LOG3[1261474]: No more addresses to
connect
Jan 04 22:32:02 stunnel[3186033]: LOG5[1261474]: Connection reset: 0
byte(s) sent to TLS, 0 byte(s) sent to socket

It almost appears that the TCP handshake does not complete, which gives
evidence towards hitting some sort of file descriptor limit.

You have to restart bind9 to restore DNS over TCP.

I have been trying to reproduce this myself in Focal containers. I
configured bind9 as a caching recursive resolver, set the connection
limits to 1000, and ran:

$ for i in {1..1500} ; do dig +tcp +keepalive +keepopen @127.0.0.1
ubuntu.com ; done

I then checked /proc//fd and $ ss -t and $ sudo ss -lnp |
grep 127.0.0.1:53, but there is no evidence of sockets remaining open
which would indicate a file descriptor leak. All 1500 queries succeeded,
and did not hang.

I then tried to resolve from a second focal container over the network,
but it didn't make any difference.

I swapped in the config that Adam provided in comment #2, and changed
the IP addresses to those of my containers and tried again, but I still
can't reproduce.

Adam, thanks for letting us know that it appears to be fixed in BIND
9.16.10, and I will start reading the commits between BIND 9.16.1 (which
is in Focal), and BIND 9.16.10 for clues.

I will also keep trying to reproduce this.

Adam, if you have any spare time to tinker with some reproduction
instructions or to try upstream builds between 9.16.1 and 9.16.10 to see
where it is first fixed, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 1906128] Re: Touchpad not detected on ByteSpeed C15B laptop

2021-01-19 Thread Po-Hsu Lin
Hello Tom,

Yes you're doing it right, just reboot after upgrading your system it
should be working.

I will mark it as verification-done-xenial based on your test result.
The kernel in the proposed pocket for Bionic is 4.15.0-133.137, can you double
check with command "uname -a" in a terminal?

For F/G, they're not ready yet, you will see a comment from "Ubuntu
Kernel Bot" on this bug along with a verification-needed- tag when
they have reached in the proposed pocket.

Thanks for your time!

2021-01-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also worth noting:

* Ubuntu 20.10 and 21.04 both seem to toggle (hide) the password as soon
as you hit Enter.

* The GUI process (gnome-shell owned by user 'gdm') should vanish as
soon as you log in. So it shouldn't remember anything. Maybe then the
first problem is your login screen's gnome-shell process is hanging
around?

[Bug 1912364] Re: Xorg freeze

2021-01-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. I can't see any information about freezes or
crashes in the attached files so next time the issue happens, please
reboot and then run:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

Please also check for crashes by following these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

There might not be any crash files, and that's fine.

Next, please wait until the problem happens again, then reboot, open the
Terminal app and type:

  journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

That will create a new file called 'prevboot.txt' in the home directory,
which we would like you to attach here.

[Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. That confirms there is no EDID coming from the screen, so Linux
has to guess about the signalling method.

Turns out you're not the first to encounter this bug:

  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97822

So the good news is the hardware is not faulty but just unusual.

One user says:

> I have an HP EliteOne 800 G2 23-in Non-Touch All-in-One PC which

However note that changing the BIOS mode probably requires reinstalling
Ubuntu after that. Still, it sounds well worth trying.

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-19 Thread Glenn Stewart
Wayland versions done. Again, the edids.bin would not attach as it was
empty.

I have already made various changes to the display under Wayland. All
successful, although only in top half of the screen.

Glenn Stewart

Re: [Bug 1906086] Re: DIsplay is limited to top half of the screen

2021-01-19 Thread Glenn Stewart
Thanks Daniel.

BIOS Update was done under Windows/HP Tools before I installed Ubuntu.

xrandrv.txt is attached. edids.bin would not attach, as it was empty.

I tried various display settings, which all worked, but within the top half
of the screen.

Glenn Stewart
