2021-01-29 Thread Franki Cheung
Public bug reported:

tried to install rtl8841CU driver for my usb wifi adapter with dkms as
upgrading to new linux header will break my static driver. Tried rolling
back to 5.8.0-40 also caused such an error.

[Bug 1861610] Re: 'Elan touchpad' not detected on 'Lenovo ThinkBook 15 IIL'

2021-01-29 Thread ANOMM
Appending "i8042.nopnp=1 pci=nocrs" to boot parameters worked for the
touchpad issue on the Lenovo V14-IIL.

Following are the steps I've followed:
1.) Open the file /etc/default/grub for editing, for example by running
      sudoedit /etc/default/grub
2.) Add to the line beginning GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT: "i8042.nopnp=1
pci=nocrs" so that it reads:
      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.nopnp=1 pci=nocrs"
     ** If other parameters are there between the double quotes, it may be OK
to leave them.
3.) Save the file and exit
4.) Run this command to update the GRUB configuration:
      sudo update-grub
5.) Reboot

[Bug 1913855] [NEW] Failure to pass system check and present login screen

2021-01-29 Thread Kent Lion
Public bug reported:

I'm reporting this against xorg, because of where the problem occurs, as
indicated below, I can't tell if the problem is with xorg, lightdm or
light-locker. The system is a Dell Optiplex 745 single-booting to
Xubuntu 20.04 up-to-date as of today.

I replaced one of 2 monitors, the one rotated to portrait orientation, with a
higher resolution monitor. Started the system, logged in as another user and
changed the desktop background however, when I then logged out and restarted
the system, it behaved normally until it displayed the usual
/dev/sda1: clean, x/x files, /x blocks
on both monitors. The prompt remained for a few seconds, slowly blinked off and
on 6 times, and then remained with no further activity. The system works fine
if I boot from a Xubuntu 18.04 DVD (I didn't have a 20.04 DVD, and this is the
only machine with a burner). On another machine, I determined that the system
was booting, because the machine was visible on the network, and its shared
folders were accessible.

I could get to a login prompt and log on using Alt+F1 to F6. Alt-F7
returned me to the file system check prompt. I was able to start xorg
after logging on with startx, and changing all settings for the new
monitor, everything worked normally until logging out, which of course
returned me to the command line where I had given the command startx.

If I log out requesting a restart, the system reboots, but still stops at the
same place every time. That behavior hadn't changed the next day. I can use the
machine, but only by selecting a terminal, logging as myself or the other user
and giving the startx command. I have been unable to find anything on the
Internet that corrects the problem. Since the problem first started, two
crashes have occurred and I allowed them to be reported; however, they were
light-locker crashes. I reinstalled lightdm and light-locker, but that made no
difference. I installed gdm3, which works fine, but switching back to lightdm
with:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3
sudo dpkg --configure lightdm
resulted in:
dpkg: error processing package lightdm (--configure):
 package lightdm is already installed and configured
Errors were encountered while processing:
 lightdm

So I can't really be sure if the problem is with xorg, lightdm or light-
locker, but since there are no error messages and everything else works
fine, it's clearly a bug, if a strange one. I do not relish the idea of
having to reinstall Xubuntu; so for the time being, I'll use gdm3,
though I prefer lightdm's ability to properly display backdrops and use
the two monitors properly extended (with gdm3, the mouse moves down the
left portrait monitor before moving onto the right monitor where gdm3
sees fit to put the logon dialog). The next thing I'll try is
autoremoving lightdm rebooting a few times and then reinstalling it...

Because of the absence of error messages and information even suggesting
why X isn't starting, I have no idea what other information about my
system might be useful to you, but if you need something additional,
I'll try to provide it.

[Bug 1913851] Re: pam_winbind should reject disabled users

2021-01-29 Thread Seth Arnold
Can you double-check that your pam configuration for pam_winbind is
configured to use required or requisite rather than sufficient?

It's possible that the required or requisite defaults aren't sufficient
but may still be possible to configure using the more complicated pam
syntax. Search for 'valueN' in /usr/share/doc/libpam-doc/txt/Linux-
PAM_SAG.txt.gz for some details. I don't know off-hand if the
pam_winbind module supports these finer-grained controls but it's
possible it does.

Thanks

[Bug 1913853] [NEW] Ubuntu 16.04 kernel 4.4.0-202 basic commands hanging

2021-01-29 Thread Marcel Svitalsky
Public bug reported:

Hi there,
I've updated kernel on my Ubuntu 16.04 from 4.4.0-201-generic to
4.4.0.202-generic today and it broke my system.
Basic commands, such as pidof, lsof, ps fax (ps -a works) hang indefinitely and
not even root issued kill -KILL will terminate them. Only thing that helps is
to kill the shell that started such commands.

I had to reboot back to 4.4.0-201, however during shutdown various stop
jobs hanged as well and after more than 25 minutes I had to go for hard
reboot.

My current—NOT BROKEN—kernel has signature (cat /proc/version_signature):
Ubuntu 4.4.0-201.233-generic 4.4.247

I am attaching the lspci-vnvn.log, also created with the non-broken
kernel.

[Bug 1910934] Re: lxqt loses natural scrolling

2021-01-29 Thread js1
Walter, thanks for your efforts, but I think you're barking up the wrong
tree. Notice my session.conf has naturalScrollingEnabled=1, unchanged
since last boot on Jan 25 when it natural scrolling was working. The
issue seems to be that lxqt-config is picking up naturalScrollingEnabled
from somewhere other than my ~/.config/lxqt/session.conf, or is not
honoring my local config.

Unfortunately without any information on what process changed it, all
that tells us is that something happened. So that number before the
colon in parentheses after audit is the date/time in based on the Unix
epoch. There are a bunch of ways to convert that to normal time. That
said, looking at your logs, where along in the boot process does that
happen?

[Bug 1910934] Re: lxqt loses natural scrolling

2021-01-29 Thread js1
No, same Dell USB Laser Mouse. I just turned on my workstation and
natural scrolling is lost again. My ~/.config/lxqt/session.conf hasn't
been touched since Jan 25, and looks like this:

[General]
__userfile__=true

[Environment]
BROWSER=firefox
GTK_CSD=0
GTK_OVERLAY_SCROLLING=0
TERM=qterminal

[Touchpad]
DELL%2520DELL%2520USB%2520Laser%2520Mouse\accelSpeed=@Variant(\0\0\0\x87\0\0\0\0)

DELL%2520DELL%2520USB%2520Laser%2520Mouse\tappingEnabled=-1

And, for good measure, the relevant parts of the audit.log:

[Bug 1871143] Re: Kernel crash during USB device enumeration or mounting

2021-01-29 Thread Colin Godsey
For the other folks that see this, it does seem to help to use the reset
button slower, for what its worth. Possibly offers a better
disconnect/reconnect timing.

[Bug 1871143] Re: Kernel crash during USB device enumeration or mounting

2021-01-29 Thread Colin Godsey
This still seems to be happening on 5.8. Different board yet again, but
same situation. Crashes every 1/X times when resetting the board. I
don't have logs of the actual crash (ZFS root maybe?), but it locks up
right after the "failed to set dtr/rts" like the others reported here,
with similar logs up to that point.

---
update-notifier (3.192.39) hirsute; urgency=medium

  * data/list-oem-metapackages:
+ Run black
+ Drop unused logging import
+ Handle bad apt indexes. apt.Cache() can fail if the apt lists can't be
  parsed for whatever reason. Handle that and exit 0 so that
  update-notifier continues. A consequence of being in this state is that
  we can't find any oem metapackages if any are applicable. If the indexes
  become good again then we'll find them next time. (LP: #1913726)

[Bug 1863434] Re: 20.04 grub menu not visible

2021-01-29 Thread Fritz Hudnut
@william:

Well if it works, then that is elegance . . . ???

My menu does work because it is "run" by OpenSUSE . . . only the ubuntu
flavors "disappear" my menu.

My question was, does "disabling graphical terminal" in a Mac actually
"fix" the problems that this thread is discussing??? By uncommenting
that line, the grub menu will appear on booting??

Clearly my "TIMEOUT" matches your suggestion . . . that was in my Deb
Bullseye distro this am.

[Bug 1913834] [NEW] ipmiutil_evt.service fails due to probable lack of PID file

The failure appears to be inability to open /run/ipmiutil_evt.pid. In
/lib/systemd/system/ipmiutil_evt.service, PIDFile=/run/ipmiutil_evt.pid
and Type=forking. According to systemd.service(5), this means that the
invoked command is expected to fork, and the invoked command should
write the named PID file which systemd will subsquently read. However,
ipmiutil itself does not contain any support for writing PID files
AFAICT, so naturally it never creates one.

Deleting the PIDFile line from the service file appears to work, though
perhaps it would be better to remove “-b” from IPMIUTILEVTARGS and use
Type=simple or Type=exec instead?

[Bug 1898462] Re: [groovy] Drag and drop files from Desktop to Nautilus freezes gnome-shell

2021-01-29 Thread Alex Tognolo
I think should be included by default the possibility to use a desktop with
files and icons.
A desktop for just a wallpaper is nonsense.

[Bug 1910594] Re: crash during the installation of Ubuntu 20.04 TLS

2021-01-29 Thread Brian Murray
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Reviewing your log files attached to this bug report it
seems that there is a problem with your installation media (CD/DVD).
You can verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you downloaded by
following the instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM.  You might also retry
your installation with new media. In the event that is is not in fact
an error with your installation media please set the bug's status back
to New. Thanks and good luck!

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Re: [Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2021-01-29 Thread Tim Richardson
You don't have to unplug them. The minimal workaround, and what I always
use, is before the install, unflag the EFI partitions of drives you don't
want to target. Somewhere in this bug report I have my tips on this, and I
also wrote it up here https://askubuntu.com/a/1056079/152287

[Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise

2021-01-29 Thread Robert Bernecky
I have lost about a month of my time with this bug!!
I thought I was doing something wrong with UUID or GPT vs MBR or ZFS or ...
It creamed my live benchmark system that I had spent considerable time
installing and customizing.

Just today, I stumbled onto this archaic bug report, which remains unfixed
after seven years!

Since my system has several nvme drives, I can't just unplug them to work
around the problem.

[Bug 1908286] Re: Asus G732LWS | ALC294 | Speakers don't work on 20.04 or 20.10

2021-01-29 Thread kotek
Hello,

I installed "modules-extra" packages for both kernel versions. It fixed wifi,
sound from headphones, and trackpad issues, but both of them still have no
sound from speakers.
I assume that the change that broke it happened in 5.4.0-45-generic.

"dmesg" outputs from 5.4.0-45-generic, 5.4.0-47-generic and
5.4.0-42-generic (which is known working) are attached. I had to zip
them up because launchpad doesn't seem to support multiple attachments.

Thanks

[Bug 1913639] Re: linux-crashdump is not capable of mounting zfs root pools

2021-01-29 Thread Guilherme G. Piccoli
Hi Anders, thanks for your report! It seems the issue could lie in the
initramfs-tools package not being able to recognize the need of ZFS if
MODULES=dep is used - in the kdump initrd, we restrict the modules
included to the needed subset, in order to make it smaller and consume
less memory from the crashkernel reserved range. The way to achieve that
is set the config file for the kdump initrd to make use of MODULES=dep
directive.

I'd like to ask some testing from you, so we can verify this theory.
Please run the following commands as root user:

ls -lh /var/lib/kdump/initrd.img*

kdump-config unload
rm -f /var/lib/kdump/initrd.img*

sed -i 's/MODULES=dep/MODULES=most/g' /etc/kernel/postinst.d/kdump-tools

kdump-config load

ls -lh /var/lib/kdump/initrd.img*

The first command will show you the current kdump initrd images you
have, then next commands delete them and recreate one for the current
kernel, but using "MODULES=most" to include a bigger set of modules in
the kdump initrd. The last command will show the newly created initrd
size, please be sure it is bigger than the one you deleted.

After that, try a kdump and let's see if it works!
Cheers,

Guilherme

[Bug 1863434] Re: 20.04 grub menu not visible

2021-01-29 Thread Fritz Hudnut
@William P:

See, like in my case, in that file I have:

[CODE] GRUB_DEFAULT=0
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# Uncomment to enable BadRAM filtering, modify to suit your needs
# This works with Linux (no patch required) and with any kernel that obtains
# the memory map information from GRUB (GNU Mach, kernel of FreeBSD ...)
#GRUB_BADRAM="0x01234567,0xfefefefe,0x89abcdef,0xefefefef"

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
#GRUB_TERMINAL=console   [/CODE]

So would anyone interested want to "disable graphical terminal" by uncommenting
that line??

Really my personal issue is on the updating or installing of grub in
ubuntu flavors that the grub menu on cold boot gets scrubbed and only
one option in the ubuntu world will boot . . . no matter how I try to
boot the system . . . only fixed by running os-prober in TW, or
sometimes needing to chroot into TW to do the same action . . . it is "a
pain" . . . only happens in ubuntu, possibly in Debian . . . not in
OpenSUSE and not in Manjaro . . . .

[Bug 1913812] [NEW] snd_fireworks module fails to load

2021-01-29 Thread Len Ovens
Public bug reported:

dmesg contains these two lines:
[8.593334] snd_fireworks fw1.0: EFW transaction timed out
[8.594276] snd_fireworks fw1.0: Sound card registration failed: -5
And ALSA therefore does not see my echo audiofire 12.

The device continues to work fine as a backend for jackdbus2 using the
FFADO kernel modules. The snd_fireworks did work fine with this device
in ubuntustudio 20.04 but also fails in ubuntustudio 20.10 (which I
don't use)

[Bug 1908452] Re: MAAS stops working and deployment fails after `Loading ephemeral` step

2021-01-29 Thread dann frazier
A reproducer would be nice you say? Well, you can point your MAAS server to
this URL for MAAS images:
  https://images.maas.io/ephemeral-v3/daily/

Then you can simulate whatever-the-heck is going on in our lab
environment by adding an iptables rule that will drop packets containing
the server cert from the image server:

-
$ sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 91.189.88.136 -m string --string maas.io
--algo bm -j DROP
-

Then initiate an image sync. You'll find that roughly 25% of API
connections hang indefinitely:

-
ubuntu@maas:~$ wget --tries=1 http://localhost:5240/MAAS/rpc -O /dev/null
--2021-01-29 20:59:42--  http://localhost:5240/MAAS/rpc
Resolving localhost (localhost)... 127.0.0.1
Connecting to localhost (localhost)|127.0.0.1|:5240... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response...
-

What's that? Would be nice if it were a standalone reproducer? Well, you
can do the same thing with the same iptables rule and a simple script
that makes the same simplestreams API call as regiond does:

-
$ cat repro.py
#!/usr/bin/env python3

from simplestreams.contentsource import RequestsUrlReader

url = "https://images.maas.io/ephemeral-v3/stable/streams/v1/index.sjson";
r = RequestsUrlReader(url)
-

This will hang seemingly forever. strace can be used to demonstrate it
is also hung in a read call, as I showed regiond was in Comment #11:

-
$ sudo strace -p 562333
strace: Process 562333 attached
read(20, ^Cstrace: Process 562333 detached

-

And if you ^c it, it will show same backtrace I extracted from regiond
in comment #17:

-
$ ./repro.py
^CTraceback (most recent call last):

[Bug 1913809] [NEW] internal webcams of HP Elite X2 G2 not supported

2021-01-29 Thread Lukas Werner
Public bug reported:

Both internal webcams of my HP Elite X2 G2 work well in Windows, but
don't work in Ubuntu 20.10 or Manjaro. The driver seems to be missing or
misconfigured. According to linux-hardware.org, it's a "Xeon E3-1200
v5/E3-1500 v5/6th Gen Core Processor Imaging Unit". Guvcview recognises
the Cameras as "Intel IPU3 CIO2", but doesn't show an image.

[Bug 1913810] [NEW] restart doesn't test for syntax errors

2021-01-29 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Public bug reported:

Tested openssh on bionic and groovy, same issue.

The switch to systemd lost the ability to do a sanity check on the
config file (via sshd -t) before attempting to restart sshd. This was
originally bug #624361 in the SySV days, fixed in the initscript back
then.

The sysv script still does it, but it's not used anymore:
 restart)
check_privsep_dir
check_config
log_daemon_msg "Restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell server" "sshd" || true

And:
check_config() {
if [ ! -e /etc/ssh/sshd_not_to_be_run ]; then
/usr/sbin/sshd $SSHD_OPTS -t || exit 1
fi
}

The systemd service file has only ExecStartPre, which doesn't let it start if
there is an error, but will happily stop it:
[Unit]
Description=OpenBSD Secure Shell server
After=network.target auditd.service
ConditionPathExists=!/etc/ssh/sshd_not_to_be_run

[Service]
EnvironmentFile=-/etc/default/ssh
ExecStartPre=/usr/sbin/sshd -t
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/sshd -D $SSHD_OPTS
ExecReload=/usr/sbin/sshd -t
ExecReload=/bin/kill -HUP $MAINPID
...

Example:
# sshd -t
# systemctl restart sshd
# telnet localhost 22
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_7.6p1 Ubuntu-4ubuntu0.3
^]
telnet> quit
Connection closed.

# echo "syntax error" >> /etc/ssh/sshd_config
# sshd -t
/etc/ssh/sshd_config: line 123: Bad configuration option: syntax
/etc/ssh/sshd_config: terminating, 1 bad configuration options

# systemctl restart sshd
Job for ssh.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status ssh.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.

# telnet localhost 22

[Bug 1913284] Re: [plugin] [bcache] add a new bcache plugin

2021-01-29 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
The attachment "bionic.debdiff" seems to be a debdiff. The ubuntu-
sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they can
review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. If the attachment isn't a
patch, please remove the "patch" flag from the attachment, remove the
"patch" tag, and if you are member of the ~ubuntu-sponsors, unsubscribe
the team.
