[Bug 1922466] [NEW] Writeback not flushing to disk in 4.15.0-137-generic and above

2021-04-03 Thread Christoph Dwertmann
Public bug reported:

Hi!

We've come across some interesting behaviour in kernel
4.15.0-137.141~16.04.1 and above.

After booting a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 instance on AWS, we replace the AWS
kernel with "linux-image-4.15.0-140-generic" (4.15.0-140.144~16.04.1)
and reboot. Then we generate some I/O by running fio for a while:

fio --name=random-write --ioengine=posixaio --rw=randwrite --bs=64k
--size=256m --numjobs=16 --iodepth=16 --runtime=3600 --time_based
--end_fsync=1

It does't matter whether fio is run against the boot disk or an attached
secondary disk. After stopping fio we notice that some pages are stuck
in "writeback" and are apparently not flushing to disk:

# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.7 LTS
Release:16.04
# cat /proc/vmstat | grep "nr_writeback "
nr_writeback 80
# cat /proc/meminfo | grep Writeback:
Writeback: 320 kB

This doesn't clear, not even days later. Running more fio only increases
the amount of writeback pages.

Downgrading the kernel to 4.15.0-136.140~16.04.1 resolves the issue, no
writeback pages getting stuck. Going over the kernel changelog, I can
see that between -136 and -137 the following patchset was applied, but
I'm not sure whether it is related to the issue:
https://www.spinics.net/lists/stable/msg435893.html

Kernels 4.15.0-137-generic and above took down our Ceph cluster, because
it seems that when the amount of "writeback" reaches the buffer ceiling
of "dirty_bytes", all subsequent writes to the disk are incredibly slow.
This is from an idle production system (not on AWS) running 16.04 with
kernel 4.15.0-139-generic:

# lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS
Release:16.04
# cat /proc/sys/vm/dirty_bytes
629145600
# cat /proc/sys/vm/dirty_background_bytes
314572800
# cat /proc/meminfo | grep Writeback:
Writeback:572108 kB
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/test bs=1M count=10; rm /test
10+0 records in
10+0 records out
10485760 bytes (10 MB, 10 MiB) copied, 126.529 s, 82.9 kB/s

Could there be a bug in kernel 4.15.0-137-generic and above?

Thank you!
Kind regards,

Christoph Dwertmann

I searched on the Internet and found someone also reported on KDE bugtracking
system.
Some KDE processes (like kdeconnectd) are not killed after session logout, hog
CPU
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=433293
The workaround is to configure systemd to KillUserProcesses=yes in
/etc/systemd/logind.conf. Although this is most definitely a
bug.(https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/lnscdt/kdeconnectd_hogs_cpu/)

[Bug 1922463] [NEW] Audacious title text not updated in Task Manager

2021-04-03 Thread Boris Gjenero
Public bug reported:

I'm using Audacious media player in Winamp 2.x skin mode. It consists of
two windows: the main window with playback controls, whose title shows
the current track, and the playlist editor window, whose title is
constant. These windows are grouped into one Plasma Task Manager button
on the panel, even when Task Manager has plenty of space. This is good.
The problem is that the text displayed in Task Manager for Audacious
shows the current track in Audacious when it was started. Playing a
different track in Audacious doesn't change the title displayed in Task
Manager. In alt-tab, the title does change. If I close the playlist
editor, then the title changes in Task Manager as I change tracks in
Audacious. So apparently the way Audacious windows get grouped causes
the problem.

(Separate Firefox windows group differently, only grouping when Task
Manager is full, and then using the name of the application, with a +
icon.)

[Bug 1922462] [NEW] Missing Startup Menu Items [Lubuntu 21.04 daily]

2021-04-03 Thread TJ Herron
Public bug reported:

There is no menu item for installed Jupyter-console under "Programming"
or under "Accessories".

Similarly, installed GNU PSPP only has a menu item under "Other" but not
also under "Education".

Finally, installed R (statistical software) only has a menu item under
"Graphics", but not also under "Education".

Thanks

Just to note - in OpenLDAP 2.5, which is currently being released, we've
added symbol versioning to libldap and liblber, so mixing of libraries
should no longer be a problem.

[Bug 1295267] Re: Windows change Monitor/Desktop after screen lock

2021-04-03 Thread Robubuntu Hagopian
Same - 20.04 - both monitors are on the same graphics card. I suspect
one doesn't wake as quickly as the other and the window manager
rearranges before the laggard comes up. Unless this can be resolved in
all cases (which I tend to doubt) there needs to be a way to override
the behavior. Please!

[Bug 1855681] Re: Cannot purge a removed ppa

2021-04-03 Thread Allan W. Macdonald
I believe that this may have happened to me with ppa:oibaf/graphics-
drivers

$ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
Updating packages lists
PPA to be removed: oibaf graphics-drivers
Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: oibaf graphics-drivers
$

In this case, the ppa exists for newer releases of ubuntu but the
support for bionic has been removed. In any case, I am stuck with
packages that were installed via the ppa but I have no way to revert
them to official package types. This seems to prevent do-release-
upgrade from completing.

[Bug 1922444] [NEW] Octave GUI command line editing display problems in Lubuntu 21.04 alpha

2021-04-03 Thread TJ Herron
Public bug reported:

Command line editing is all messed up: sometimes there is excess space
between characters, sometimes characters disappear when editing. It
seems like the cursor is often in the wrong place (too much space behind
it, especially as a longer command is typed out).

[Bug 1922443] [NEW] Lxdm black screen after Ubuntu 21.04 upgrade

2021-04-03 Thread Boris Gjenero
Public bug reported:

In the past I used lxdm on my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop without
problems. After upgrading from Ubuntu 20.10 to 21.04, lxdm shows a fully
black screen, without even a mouse cursor. Attempts to interact with it
blindly don't work, which suggests it's somehow hanging, and not simply
failing to display.

Installing lxdm_0.5.3-2.1_amd64.deb from Ubuntu 20.10 does not fix the
problem. So maybe something else is at fault, because that lxdm worked
in Ubuntu 20.04.

The laptop has Mobility Radeon x1400 with the radeon driver. Though
using the fbdev driver instead doesn't change this bug.

I don't use LXDE and don't have it installed. I'm only using lxdm
because it is lightweight and fast, and I prefer other desktop
environments. This has never been a problem in the past.

[Bug 1922342] Re: HIrsute live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

2021-04-03 Thread José Marinho
I was doing some new text and I'm going to put some information about
what I have done.

First I create another media with startup disc creator. I think that the
tool is not relevant here and I test with dd, gnome-disk and this tool
and in all I get the same results.

Once created I booted it, but I edit the grub for removing "quiet
splash" parameters. After I hit F10 and continue the boot sequence the
computer gets stuck with the following message in the screen:

"Booting a command list"

This last for almost 10 minutes and then begin the normal boot sequence.

I'm going to append two more files to help to debug the issue: the
output of dmesg and the output of /var/log/syslog.

[Bug 1915063] Re: Windows 10 wil not install using qemu-system-x86_64

2021-04-03 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
That is awesome David,
qemu64 is like a very low common denominator with only very basic CPU features.
While "copy host" means "enable all you can".

We can surely work with that a bit, but until I get access to the same
HW I need you to do it.

If you run in a console `$virsh domcapabilities` it will spew some XML at you.
One of the sections will be for "host-model". In my case that looks like

  Skylake-Client-IBRS
  Intel

...

That means a names CPU type (the one that is closest to what you have) and some
feature additionally enabled/disabled.

If you could please post the full output you have, that can be useful.
>From there you could go two steps.
1. as you see in my example it will list some cpu features on top of the named
type.
If you remove them one by one you might be able to identify the single-cpu
featute
   that breaks in your case.
2. The named CPU that you have also has a representation, it can be found in
   /usr/share/libvirt/cpu_map...
That ill list all the CPU features that make up the named type.
If #1 wasn't sufficient, you can now add those to your guest definition one
by one in disabled
   state, example

A description of the underlying mechanism is here
https://libvirt.org/formatdomain.html#cpu-model-and-topology

[Bug 971018] Re: Auto-hide Unity Launcher will not reveal when mouse pushed to left side in VirtualBox or VMware

2021-04-03 Thread Stan Senotrusov
There is a solution for that issue. You need to run the following to
change the settings:

gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock require-pressure-
to-show false

I tested it at Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS guest on VMware workstation. I think
it may apply to Virtualbox case as well.

[Bug 1922439] [NEW] X hangs after wake on Mobility Radeon x1400

2021-04-03 Thread Boris Gjenero
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Mobility Radeon x1400. In Ubuntu 20.10
and earlier, wake from sleep worked properly. In Ubuntu 21.04, X does
not work after wake from sleep. It fails in Plasma, Xfce, Openbox and
Twm. With both Plasma and Xfce the screen is totally black. In all cases
it is possible to use Control+Alt+F2 to go to a text console and use
that. Generally it is possible to kill and restart X to get a usable GUI
again.

I'm reporting this as a kernel bug because if I boot Ubuntu 21.04 with
linux-image-5.8.0-48-generic from Ubuntu 20.10, then X works after wake
from sleep.

[Bug 1922438] [NEW] Firefox unusable on Kubuntu 21.04 Wayland session

2021-04-03 Thread Nikolaos Chachampis
Public bug reported:

I tried Wayland session on a Kubuntu 21.04 beta live usb.
Firefox is practically unusable since it refreshes the screen only on
re-focusing like described in this bug report:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1616894
Unfortunately, setting widget.wayland_vsync.enabled to false does not make any
difference.
Also tried starting firefox from terminal with MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1, again no
difference.
According to the above bug report this should be fixed, no?

[Bug 1922186] Re: ibus very difficult to restart

2021-04-03 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Thanks for clarifying; now I understand better. Yes, there typically is
an ibus icon when you use ibus on a non-GNOME desktop (which I don't
very often). And it indeed includes a "Quit" option.

When the daemon is started from IBus Preferences, I agree it should be
daemonized so it's not killed when you close IBus Preferences. I
reported that upstream, and if you want to test the proposed fix in
hirsute, you can install the ibus packages from this PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/ibus

I'm not able to reproduce the other issues you mention, though.

did a nice retro engineering and others programmed a working solution
for us.

My little contribution is to adapt all this work to my laptop. I hope it
will help some owners like me.

Anyway, Shame on Asus !

[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2021-04-03 Thread magellan
Last update :

I made this change in the program :

# Ignore numpad touch
if (x > 0.95 * maxx) and (y < 0.05 * maxy):

Replaced by :

# Ignore numpad touch
if (x > 0.95 * maxx) or (y < 0.09 * maxy):

Now when I touch the numbad above the numbers, it is not detected and
since the toggle button on the corner is on this area, things seems to
work better.

[Bug 1913742] Re: Fractional scaling: bottom half of screen black on external monitor disconnect

2021-04-03 Thread Dave Musicant
Apologies: I never saw this response asking for more information.

I did solve the problem, as it turns out; it was Gromit-MPX, a tool I
use allow me to draw on the screen. The problem disappears when I
restarted Gromit-MPX.

[Bug 1922424] [NEW] Laptop display won't automatically turn on after opening the lid

2021-04-03 Thread qydw
Public bug reported:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System ->
About Ubuntu
Description:Ubuntu Hirsute Hippo (development branch)
Release:21.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or
by checking in Software Center
powerdevil:
  Installed: 4:5.21.3-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 4:5.21.3-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 4:5.21.3-0ubuntu1 500
500 https://mirrors.tuna.tsinghua.edu.cn/ubuntu hirsute/universe amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen
When the laptop lid is closed, after screen timeout is reached (Settings-Power
Management-Energy Saving-On AC Power-Screen Energy Saving-Switch off after),
open the laptop lid, laptop display should automatically turn on.

4) What happened instead
Laptop display won't automatically turn on after opening the lid, instead mouse
or keyboard interactions are needed to turn on the display.
It seems the bug is related to Wayland, for the bug doesn't appear in X session.

[Bug 1922420] [NEW] eog takes a lot of CPU to start

2021-04-03 Thread Laurent Bonnaud
Public bug reported:

Hi,

eog is very slow to start, more than 3 times slower, compared to other
image viewers (eom for instance).

Here is a time measurement that demonstrates the problem:

$ time eog P1024037.jpg

real0m3.824s
user0m3.391s
sys 0m0.082s

$ time eom P1024037.jpg

real0m1.025s
user0m0.588s
sys 0m0.068s

Notice how the "user" time, which measures CPU usage, is much higher
than in eom.

[Bug 1922342] Re: HIrsute live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

2021-04-03 Thread José Marinho
Finally, I change the description of the bug for better match the nature
of the problem.

** Description changed:

+ First of all, I change the description of this bug because, thanks to
+ Chris Guiver comments, I could check that the live session effectively
+ works but it takes too long to complete. That's why I change the
+ description of the bug. I hope this is the best approach to this.
+
I think the problem is the same as described here:
  https://discourse.ubuntubudgie.org/t/20-10-grub-error-can-t-find-
command-grub-platform/4292. I can see prior to grub menu, briefly, the
same error: Error can't find grub_platform. After the solution described
below, this error is not showed and the system is able to boot.

I try making the live usb using startup disk creator and with gnome-
disks --> Restore disk image and get the same results.

The live-usb has a gpt partition table instead of mbr like 20.04 live-
usb has. That implies, I think, that the first one does not boot on BIOS

[Bug 1922342] Re: HIrsute live session does not work on BIOS systems

2021-04-03 Thread José Marinho
To Chris

I have to admit that you are right and the system finally boots but it
take ages (it takes less time if I change partition table to mbr).

I see that in the last testcase you point that the device is extremely
slow and perhaps that is the bug.

I don't know the specs of the device you tested, but my pc is pretty
decent and it is not normal that slowness.

And like I said, that wasn't the case on previous Ubuntu versions and
that wasn't the case too on other distributions (Fedora, Opensuse,
Debian, Devuan, etc)

What is clear is that this bug must be closed and I don't know if it is
better to file a new bug or that behavior isn't consider as that

** Summary changed:

+ HIrsute live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

-
- I think it is the same bug but I reported it again because, I don't know
- exactly why, it was tagged as invalid, but I think it is a bug and it
- must be solved because it's not normal that users with BIOS pc's have to
- do all this procedure to get a live session working.

[Bug 1922380] Re: remove shim-signed very difficult

2021-04-03 Thread Julian Andres Klode
There is no force option in apt, you can use --force-remove-essential to
avoid enterinh the text but it's obviously dangerous to do so.

As the --force message clearly stated, it comes from dpkg - which is
told to force deinstallation by apt.

[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2021-04-03 Thread magellan
@Mohamed :

There is something I forgot to say : When I put my finger above the
first line, for example above the 7 number it still display 7 and it is
the same for the backspace. On my numpad, there is an area af about 8mm
which should not react to anything. So How can I resize the entire area
? With this modification, when I will press the toggle area to switch
On/Off the numpad, it will never interact with backspace.

Thanks for your help Mohamed. I'm trying to do my best but as a simple
user and not programmer, I don't understand all the code of this
program.

[Bug 1922417] [NEW] cmake: FindPkgConfig: imported target missing libraries

2021-04-03 Thread Matwey V. Kornilov
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
Release:18.04

cmake:
  Installed: 3.10.2-1ubuntu2.18.04.1
  Candidate: 3.10.2-1ubuntu2.18.04.1
  Version table:
 *** 3.10.2-1ubuntu2.18.04.1 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates/main amd64 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 3.10.2-1ubuntu2 500
500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages

I am running 3.10.2 at Bionic Beaver 18.04.5 and suffering from the following
known issue: https://gitlab.kitware.com/cmake/cmake/-/issues/17954
Unfortunately, the issue was fixed only in 3.12 and 3.10.2 is still affected.

Can we please have the following patch back-ported for 18.04.5 updates
https://gitlab.kitware.com/cmake/cmake/-/commit/ac5731a7e380349f19dc319e6c31e189b5faba93

I've checked that the patch can be applied clearly on top of the 3.10.2,
it is simple and self-consistent, so I don't expect that it will break
something else.

I've also verified that the patch indeed fixes the issue for me. Since
the patch affects only CMake module and don't requires cmake rebuild it
was simple enough.

[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2021-04-03 Thread magellan
I've tried to optimise the code so I removed the release test and send
both release codes for Left Shift and numlock. But sometimes, I still
have the issue with backspace that don't release the key and continue to
delete characters. And the corner top right area used to toggle the
numpad still detect touch in a very tiny area at the extreme top right
corner like a 5 pixels square.

[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2021-04-03 Thread Petr Nosek
Hi,

thank you for you work. I have this model: ASUS ZenBook UX362FA

I found that touchpad device in /proc/bus/input/devices has different
name. So touchpad detection does not work as I expect.

  I'm attaching devices.txt.

  My touchpad device is:
`
I: Bus=0018 Vendor=04f3 Product=30dc Version=0100
N: Name="ELAN1401:00 04F3:30DC Touchpad"
P: Phys=i2c-ELAN1401:00
S:
Sysfs=/devices/pci:00/:00:15.1/i2c_designware.1/i2c-2/i2c-ELAN1401:00/0018:04F3:30DC.0002/input/input21
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse3 event10
B: PROP=5
B: EV=1b
B: KEY=e520 1 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=2e08003
B: MSC=20

`

but your script detects this:

`
I: Bus=0018 Vendor=04f3 Product=284e Version=0100
N: Name="ELAN9008:00 04F3:284E"
P: Phys=i2c-ELAN9008:00
S:
Sysfs=/devices/pci:00/:00:15.0/i2c_designware.0/i2c-1/i2c-ELAN9008:00/0018:04F3:284E.0001/input/input15
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse0 event6
B: PROP=2
B: EV=1b
B: KEY=400 0 0 0 0 0
B: ABS=32738003
B: MSC=20

`

after small updating on line in your code, it works for my model.

line 24:

`if touchpad_detected == 0 and "Name=\"ELAN" in line and "Touchpad" in
line:`

[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2021-04-03 Thread Badaoui Mohamed
It works the same way. That's why I generally do not use it. I prefer
the F8 key to avoid conflict between backspace and numpad switch.

This is not an ideal solution. I think that we could turn on the numpad
through ic2 command as it was done to turn on the numled. But I do not
neither have a windows machine and neither know how ec2 works :/

Well done Mohamed !

Just another (and I hope the last) problem : when I use the corner top
right area to switch off the numpad I get backspace instead and
sometimes, this act like I don't release the key and continue to delete
characters.

Can you have a look at my code Mohamed ?
