[Bug 1868553] Re: libefi* integration breaks grub-install on MD devices

2021-05-19 Thread Julian Andres Klode
As mentioned before, support for multiple ESPs has been introduced to
deal with raid devices, installing directly to an ESP inside a raid is
not supported.

[Bug 1896578] Re: raid10: Block discard is very slow, causing severe delays for mkfs and fstrim operations

2021-05-19 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Evan,

The patches have been submitted for SRU to the Ubuntu kernel mailing
list, for the 4.15, 5.4, 5.8 and 5.11 kernels:

[0] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119935.html
[1] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119936.html
[2] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119937.html
[3] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119938.html
[4] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119939.html
[5] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119941.html
[6] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119940.html
[7] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119942.html

[10] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119945.html
[11] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/119946.html

The kernel team have reviewed the patches, but they are in no hurry to
ACK the patchset [12], and they also haven't outright rejected it.

[12] https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2021-May/120051.html

The current status is that the kernel team have requested more testing
to be performed, and that the patches will not make the current SRU
cycle. They will instead be submitted for consideration in the next SRU
cycle.

You can look at https://kernel.ubuntu.com/ for dates of various SRU
cycles. If the patches are accepted for the 2021.05.31 SRU cycle, then
you could expect a supported kernel to be available in late June.

If you want to help, then please consider installing the test kernels in
comment #14 and helping test Raid10 on ssds / NVMe drives that support
block discard.

I am currently using a cloud instance with 4x NVMe disks in Raid10 as my
/home directory, and things seem okay.

I'll keep you updated on the progress of this patchset via this bug.

Thanks,
Matthew

[Bug 1929011] [NEW] Alt + SysRq/ PrintScrn + REISUB R-E-I-S-U-B for emergency reboot

2021-05-19 Thread Peter Burnett
Public bug reported:

Left-Alt is always operational & Right-Alt is not at any time & not specific to
this report's subject category.
True on both desktop & Live ubuntu-20.04.2.0-desktop-amd64.iso.
It is natural to use Right-Alt due to a closer distance to the SysRq key.
This might help explain why some say REISUB does not work.

[Bug 1929009] Re: ubuntu install crashes said hardware problem

2021-05-19 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This package failure looks like it was caused by bad ISO download,
corrupted install media, or device failure. eg. look in the logs and
you'll see messages like these :-

May 20 03:28:18 ubuntu kernel: [ 229.997017] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
May 20 03:28:18 ubuntu kernel: [  229.997024] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x171bfa76
May 20 03:28:18 ubuntu kernel: [ 229.997174] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
May 20 03:28:18 ubuntu kernel: [  229.997177] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x171bfa76

Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be
a useful bug report so I am closing it, as it appears to be a bad ISO or
faulty device (inc. bad write-to-device). I suggest you verify your ISO
download, and use the 'check disc for defects' option to validate your
media before install to ensure a good download & write.

If you believe I'm in error, please leave a comment explaining why and
change the status back to 'New'.

Possibly useful :

refers to your install media, be it CD, DVD, HDD, SSD, thumb-drive etc)

stop right away and keeps running in the background, taking a
significant part of the system resources (it looks like a full CPU core
at 100% out of 4).

This is a really unusual behavior among desktop apps, it can decrease
the battery life drastically on a laptop if the user doesn't notice, and
there is no message informing the user or offering a way to control this
when closing the app.

Launching Shotwell with export SHOTWELL_LOG=1 shows in the logs that it
was in fact still creating new thumbnails for the recently modified
pictures (the ones ending in _shotwell.jpg that it has recreated after
my deletion attempt) and it finally stopped after a bit more than an
hour.

>From a user point of view, this is really disturbing. Would it be possible to:
1/ properly stop all long-running background actions (such as thumbnail
creation) as soon as the app has been closed by the user?
2/ and maybe offer an option in the settings for users that like the current
beavhior?

Personally, if I want to keep things running, I simply keep an app open but
minimized. But as soon as I close an app, I expect it to stop taking system
resources (and certainly not to keep using 25% of total CPU resources for 1h+
long).

I don't know if this is a design decision or if I've hit a bug, so let
me know if you would need any other input. Btw, I've seen this using the
master branch, compiled on commit:
b5dd17ea16b1a44933fb65378dc5a30971dcec5a

Thanks a lot,
Jérôme

Thanks Jens. I can't tell for sure as I've moved my photo set onto

Looking at bug 771613, I may be hit by that one indeed. I'll try to see
if I can clean my database manually as suggested there.

With a bit of delay: I can confirm that the trigger of the issue was
indeed the same bug 771613, as you had guessed.

I had changed my username when changing laptops and looking at the
database, the older filepath entries in BackingPhotoTable were still
pointing to the older location in /home/old_user and not in
/home/new_user. Creating a symlink did the trick for me to make the
filepath correct, as a quick workaround. Maybe the filepath should be
relative instead of absolute for RAW + JPG pairs?

Anyway, launching Shotwell right after the symlink creation still took
quite a lot of resources the very first time, and closing the window
didn't stop all the background activities once again, which is the main
topic of this bug. I've let it finish and I've taken the logs, that I'm
attaching in case they contain something useful.

Now, I'm back with a stable and efficient Shotwell, that's a relief.
I'll still need to fix the filepath in the database at some point
though.

[Bug 1928744] Re: Disk IO very slow on kernel 4.15.0-142-generic

2021-05-19 Thread Mariusz
Hi,

I have done another test and compared the same server running on
4.15.0-136-generic and kernel 4.15.0-142-generic. Collected zabbix CPU
utilization graph which is showing the problem from the performance
point of view. On 4.15.0-136-generic, the server works normal and there
are no processes stuck on 99% iowait. On 4.15.0-142-generic it is not
working at all and rsync, pg_receivewal or dd processes are hanging with
iowait 99%. I attached the zabbix graph to this bug.

2021-05-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. Please try logging into 'Ubuntu on Xorg'
(select it on the login screen) and tell us if that has the same bug.

Also, bugs like this are often caused by a faulty connection. It could
come and go at times when the amount or the structure of data over the
cable (DisplayPort??) changes. So please try a different cable if you
can.

[Bug 1928522] Re: seccomp_bpf from ubuntu_kernel_selftests.seccomp in linux ADT test failure with linux/4.15.0-144.148

2021-05-19 Thread Thadeu Lima de Souza Cascardo
So, s390x ptrace does allow to set the syscall and return code as long
as it sets the return code at exit time.

However, when using seccomp SECCOMP_RET_TRACE, there is no possibility
to change it at exit time (by doing a ptrace after SECCOMP_RET_TRACE
stops the process). It only happens at entry time. Then, either the
syscall or return value could be set. This is aggravated by the fact
that when seccomp checks for an invalid syscall in order to skip
executing it, it checks for int_code, which cannot be changed by ptrace.
This is probably something that could be reviewed, however.

Without the code change that led to this test regression, the test sets
gpr[2] twice, once for the syscall number, then for the return value.
That return value was being used later on as the return code as it was
an invalid syscall number, which made the test accidentally work.

Now, instead, ENOSYS is returned, and the test fails.

One regression, however, that this patch causes (but not on 4.15), is
that when seccomp returns failure because of a signal, the
signal_restart should not be skipped, but it is. This causes a test
(that we don't currently run) to fail on 5.4, but that is not a
regression and has been like that on 5.4 since forever.

Upstream has changed the entry code for a common code, which should not
have this bug. That needs to be verified, though. Then, a different fix
should be applied to our earlier kernels, like this one:

@@ -905,7 +905,7 @@ asmlinkage long do_syscall_trace_enter(struct pt_regs *regs)
sd.args[5] = regs->gprs[7] & mask;

if (__secure_computing() == -1)
-   goto skip;
+   return -1;
}
 #endif /* CONFIG_SECCOMP */

Then, seccomp_bpf can be run just fine on 5.8, for example. 5.4 possibly
needs one small fix for s390x to work, instead of the very large
patchset I thought was needed.

That would be:
commit 4bae85b620dc1f7aa4d2338b923d9d9b394b58c4
Author: Sven Schnelle
Date:   Mon Mar 9 16:56:53 2020 +0100

selftests/seccomp: s390 shares the syscall and return value register

s390 cannot set syscall number and reture code at the same time,
so set the appropriate flag to indicate it.

Signed-off-by: Sven Schnelle
Signed-off-by: Vasily Gorbik

Which is the same that is likely needed for 4.15 to skip these tests.

Cascardo.

[Bug 1928997] [NEW] powerdevil occasionally stops responding until manually suspended

2021-05-19 Thread Nathaniel Beaver
Public bug reported:

About twice a month or so, my laptop exhibits the following symptoms:

1. Adjusting the brightness with the usual keys no longer works.

2. Closing the lid no longer suspends

3. Plugging in or unplugging no longer updates the battery charging
icon.

When this happens, I run this command:

systemctl suspend

and after opening the lid and unlocking, everything works again.

Based on these symptoms and workaround, I believe this is a bug in
powerdevil. I first recorded it occurring in version 5.12.7-0ubuntu0.1
in 2019, but it persists in version 5.12.8.

Note that this is not a duplicate of bug #1766683:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/powerdevil/+bug/1766683

Most of the time, closing the lid does suspend my laptop, and I have
lidAction=1 already set (see attached powermanagementprofilesrc).

I would greatly appreciate suggestions for debugging. Currently I have
tried looking at the output of:

systemctl status upower.service

systemctl status org.kde.powerdevil.backlighthelper.service

acpi -V

systemd-inhibit --list

journalctl --boot --lines=all | grep powerdevil

grep powerdevil ~/.xsession-errors

as well as running strace and gdb on the powerdevil process when it is
unresponsive, but I haven't turned up anything useful. (I've attached it
anyway in case anyone can make use of it.)

[Bug 1928996] Re: [X58A-UD3R, Nvidia GPU 84 HDMI/DP, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all after resuming from suspend

2021-05-19 Thread Samuel Ainsworth
As a quick update, I managed to kill all of the spurious pulseaudio
processes that had been lying around as a result of `pulseaudio -k &&
pulseaudio --start` and got the systemd pulseaudio process back on its
feet. Then I confirmed that the audio worked, suspended my system, and
woke it up again and the audio still works!

Therefore I suspect that pulseaudio processes started by the user in
terminal sessions (daemonized) do not survive the suspend/resume cycle
for some reason(?). How the systemd pulseaudio process failed to begin
with remains the larger issue, however.

[Bug 1928996] [NEW] [X58A-UD3R, Nvidia GPU 84 HDMI/DP, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all after resuming from suspend

2021-05-19 Thread Samuel A
Public bug reported:

Sound works fine after an initial boot up, but fails after resuming from
a suspend. Going to the "Sound" section in the Settings app, I no longer
see the HDMI device presented as an output option when this occurs.

I suspect this is due to issues with pulseaudio. At least, running
`pulseaudio -k && pulseaudio --start`, then restarting apps seems to fix
the issue. In particular I've found that the pulseaudio systemd service
has failed after resuming from suspend. After scanning through
journalctl, there are a few suspect sections. I've attached the logs in
their entirety, and an abbreviated log with only sections that I found
interesting. I cannot be sure which are at fault, but hopefully it helps
narrow the search.

[Bug 1917101] Re: Booting into desktop results in flickering (also when I turn off and next turn on display)

2021-05-19 Thread Chris Guiver
Lubuntu 18.04 is EOL (see https://lubuntu.me/bionic-eol/) as flavors
only provide 3 years of supported life (using packages found in
'universe').

Main Ubuntu Desktop, Server and packages from 'main', which include the
kernel you're asking do have 5 years of support with regards security
fixes.

I had a quick look at your video, I couldn't see the issue you're
talking about, but Lubuntu 18.04 is no longer supported. The
Ubuntu/Canonical team however will require the apport-collect to be
actioned.

[Bug 1924685] Re: No sound output/input available after installing 21.04

2021-05-19 Thread Herczeg Zsolt
~mesouug I've tested my XPS 9700 on the self-compiled ubuntu kernel, and
it works great with a 4-pin plug, even the microphone input of the
headset is fully functional. There may be hardware differences within
the XPS 9700 line as well, but the driver must be fully functional for
at least some of the hardware sold.

Are you confident your headset should be compatible? Not all 4-pin
headphones have the same pin order, which was historically a common
problem.

Public bug reported:

This is translated from a translator, but I make known that I tried to
install a package installer and since I have all the updates enabled, I
wanted to update the Wi-Fi drives, which it indicates in the title, but
I first installed the Wi-Fi driver downloaded from a page, so I mark an
error, I would recommend doing something that checks if another driver
is installed that by the way the error that appeared gave a message
saying something like this, and uninstall the previous driver and
install the one offered, but fortune I think that if it was updated and
so far I do not see problems.

[Bug 1928989] [NEW] expiring trust anchor compatibility issue

2021-05-19 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * openssl fails to talk to letsencrypt website past September 2021,

https://letsencrypt.org/certs/staging/letsencrypt-stg-root-dst.pem

 * Test connectivity to the expired-root-ca test website
https://expired-root-ca-test.germancoding.com

setup:

apt install openssl
wget https://letsencrypt.org/certs/staging/letsencrypt-stg-root-x1.pem
wget https://letsencrypt.org/certs/staging/letsencrypt-stg-root-dst.pem
cat letsencrypt-stg-root-x1.pem letsencrypt-stg-root-dst.pem >> ca.pem

test case:
openssl s_client -connect expired-root-ca-test.germancoding.com:443 -servername
expired-root-ca-test.germancoding.com -verify 1 -verifyCAfile ca.pem

bad result:

Connection should be successful and trusted with correctly working

trust path using non-expired CA in the chain.

[Where problems could occur]

 * Changes as to how the trust paths are built in TLS connection may

security vulnerabilities (connecting to invalid sites successfully).

[Other Info]

 * Background info
 * The current chain from letsencrypt is expiring, they are adding a new chain,
but also keeping the expiring one. This will result in connectivity issues when
using old gnutls/openssl against websites using the default letsencrypt
configuration after September 2021.

https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/questions-re-openssl-client-compatibility-changes-for-let-s-encrypt-certificates/143817

Currently openssl in xenial and earlier will not establish a connection,
if any parts of the trust chain have expired, even though alternative
non-expired chains are available.

This has been fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.0+ by setting
X509_V_FLAG_TRUSTED_FIRST by default see

Hi,

Yes you are right that CONFIG_LOAD_PPC_KEYS enables loading of keys into
.platform keyring from firmware at runtime. However, as Daniel has
mentioned in his comment dated 2020-12-17 , that the .platform keyring
is currently not loaded in pseries firmware as it is static keys based
solution and at the moment doesn't have any mechanism to expose trusted
keys (this will change with the full key management solution).

The final conclusion was to add a config option for PLATFORM KEYRING
similar to SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS mechanism. It would allow loading
additional keys compiled into the kernel to be loaded only to .platform
keyring. This would be in addition to the existing support for loading
firmware keys at runtime on the platfom keyring. It aligns with xnox
comment dated "2012-03-18".

At some point we will probably close the loop hole that allows self
signed certificates loaded onto the builtin keyring to be loaded onto
the IMA keyring. It's better to define a mechanism for loading
additional certs on the platform keyring that would work today and will
continue to work in the future.

I am supposed to start looking at the patches. I would be starting to
look at them in June timeframe.

Thanks & Regards,
- Nayna

[Bug 1928182] Re: Unable to deploy postgresql-k8s charm from charmhub

2021-05-19 Thread John A Meinel
That particular error is coming from here:
https://github.com/juju/juju/blob/19d6a75eea61f5021a9fa0ee8e37fe7f6e3c9d53/charmhub/download.go#L201

Given what it is downloading from, I believe it is coming from:
https://github.com/juju/juju/blob/19d6a75eea61f5021a9fa0ee8e37fe7f6e3c9d53/charmhub/download.go#L101

Essentially we got the charm URL from Charmhub, but when we went to download
it, we got a status code that wasn't 200 OK, and wasn't 404 Not Found.
(I feel like we should at least be logging more information if not including it
in the error)

  I founded on askubuntu some solution. I can add to the GRUB nomodeset

  but system works slower and with lower resolution. On my machine with

[Bug 1928392] Re: add newer Ubuntu releases to lintian for older Ubuntu releases

2021-05-19 Thread Brian Murray
I tested lintian in by using debuild with 2vcard after changing the
release name in 2vcard to impish. With the version of lintian in the
release pocket lintian raised and error about the release name and with
the version of lintian from -proposed no error was raised, so I'm
setting this to verification done.

[Bug 1928182] Re: Unable to deploy postgresql-k8s charm from charmhub

2021-05-19 Thread Daniel Manrique
The download problem happened at 2021-05-12 10:01:49, charmhub didn't
have any outage at that time.

COuld we perhaps get more information about under which circumstances
Juju would say "unable to locate archive"?

ERROR storing charm "postgresql-k8s": cannot retrieve
"https://api.charmhub.io/api/v1/charms/download/y2vuZHGLElMmdfcL4q1zJayL9utaheIa_2.charm":
unable to locate archive

I'd like to know what HTTP response code / payload was received by Juju
to result in this message, so we can track down why charmhub responded
with that.

[Bug 1928984] [NEW] keyboard layout return back to US during the install process

2021-05-19 Thread Jean-Do Veuve
Public bug reported:

When installing the 21.04 version on an Oracle VirtualBox, you can
choose the keyboard setting following your country.

What is expected: the chosen settings will remain during the whole
install process.

What happened: At the moment you are entering the login_name and the
login_password, the keyboard revert discreetly back to US layout and
will once again revert to chosen country setting after the reboot.

Resulting problem: you will type the login/password with a different
keyboard layout that the one you had when you entered it during the
install process.

IMPORTANT: This is a regression as the exact same problem was already
known with 20.04 and was solved. See :

Yes, exactly.

(My debdiff just drops the buggy patch, at the cost of re-introducing
the original issue, which IMO has a much smaller impact than the
regression, so hopefully an acceptable trade-off.)

[Bug 1928981] [NEW] Compilation of MPI C/C++ codes fails with mpich

2021-05-19 Thread Christophe
Public bug reported:

 A few days ago, I have upgraded several machines from Ubuntu 20.10 to
21.04. Since then, I cannot compile anymore the C++ code that I am
working on. The compilation (actually linking) with mpic++ fails with
the following message

/usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmpich.a(lib_libmpich_la-ch3_init.o):
undefined reference to symbol 'pthread_mutexattr_init@@GLIBC_2.2.5'
/usr/bin/ld : /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 : erreur lors de l'ajout de
symboles : DSO missing from command line
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

I tried to add -pthread -lpthread. I now get the message

/usr/bin/ld : /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmpich.a(ad_iwrite.o) : dans la
fonction « ADIOI_GEN_aio_wait_fn » :
(.text+0x137) : référence indéfinie vers « aio_suspend »
/usr/bin/ld : (.text+0x191) : référence indéfinie vers « aio_error »
/usr/bin/ld : (.text+0x1a4) : référence indéfinie vers « aio_return »
/usr/bin/ld : /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmpich.a(ad_iwrite.o) : dans la
fonction « ADIOI_GEN_aio_poll_fn » :

/usr/bin/ld : (.text+0x345) : référence indéfinie vers « aio_return »
/usr/bin/ld : /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libmpich.a(ad_iwrite.o) : dans la
fonction « ADIOI_GEN_aio » :
(.text+0x471) : référence indéfinie vers « aio_write »
/usr/bin/ld : (.text+0x501) : référence indéfinie vers « aio_read »
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

Note that my code still compiles on other machines with older Ubuntu
distribution.

The problem can be reproduced with the much simpler MPI example (taken
from https://mpitutorial.com/tutorials/mpi-hello-world/)

#include
#include

int main(int argc, char** argv) {
// Initialize the MPI environment
MPI_Init(NULL, NULL);

// Get the number of processes
int world_size;
MPI_Comm_size(MPI_COMM_WORLD, _size);

// Get the rank of the process
int world_rank;
MPI_Comm_rank(MPI_COMM_WORLD, _rank);

// Get the name of the processor
char processor_name[MPI_MAX_PROCESSOR_NAME];
int name_len;
MPI_Get_processor_name(processor_name, _len);

// Print off a hello world message
printf("Hello world from processor %s, rank %d out of %d processors\n",
   processor_name, world_rank, world_size);

// Finalize the MPI environment.
MPI_Finalize();
}

The compilation with the command mpicc test.c returns the error message

[Bug 1928939] Re: excessive boot time (some old bios boxes); ; lubuntu impish daily

2021-05-19 Thread José Marinho
I can confirm as the reporter of the bug present on Hirsute mentioned
above that the bug persists in Impish and affects at least to regular
Ubuntu in addition to Lubuntu.

[Bug 1908726] Re: Update the package for Focal Fossa to >= 0.27.3

2021-05-19 Thread Hans Joachim Desserud
If the problem is still present, could anyone attach the output of `apt
policy darktable`? The package from the Ubuntu archives seem to only
require libexiv2-27 (>= 0.27.2) so I don't see what would cause this
issue (https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/darktable) . Also, I was able
to install darktable on my 20.04 system without issues.

[Bug 1922342] Re: HIrsute live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

2021-05-19 Thread José Marinho
I have confirmed that the bug still exists in Impish and mark your bug report
as it affects me.
@Chris Guiver, as you are more involved in that project and know better than me
the quirks of this processes, tell me if I must close this bug report and if it
is convenient to do something else on your bug report apart from mark the bug
as it affects me.
You suggests to the developers that, if the boot should be slow it could be
convenient to insert a message warning that. I think that the fix suggested by
@Lucap (to enable the boot flag on the first partition) does not have any side
effect and reduce the boot time ostensibly.
Besides that, your filled your bug report with reference to Lubuntu iso. I
tested Lubuntu and regular Ubuntu and is the same thing on both. For that
reason I submit the Ubuntu test result. If I do something wrong feel free to
correct me. The tests results are here:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/424/builds/230926/testcases/1303/results

OK, here it is:

https://launchpad.net/~sergiodj/+archive/ubuntu/openldap-bug1926265

lincvz, could you please give this a try and check if this package fixes
the issue?  Thank you!

[Bug 1926265] Re: slapd enter in infinite loop on sched_yield syscall

2021-05-19 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
Thanks for the further investigation, Stephane and Ryan. Much
appreciated!

It would be interesting to know if lincvz could test an openldap built
with Ryan's patch, to check if he can still reproduce the bug with it.
I am going to prepare a PPA with Ryan's patch and let you know ASAP.

Ryan, IIUC the patch you're proposing fixes the issue experienced by
Stephane, but we're not entirely sure that it's the same issue being
reported in this bug. Am I right?

If that's correct, and if we verify that lincvz can still reproduce the
bug even with the fix proposed by Ryan, then the best way forward would
be for Stephane to open a new bug so that I can act on it.

Thanks.
