[Bug 1940761] [NEW] multi-monitor edges still sticky with Sticky Edges turned off

2021-08-21 Thread Charles Meo
Public bug reported:

Just upgraded to this:
`
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=20.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=focal
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS"
`

I've turned off sticky edges but they're still sticky--sometimes!
What's weird about this is that it's only a problem going from the primary
(lower) monitor to the secondary (higher). I have them set in an 'above and
below' configuration, not horizontal.

Going from the lower monitor to the higher one is really hard.

I do not know exactly what package governs this but it wasn't a problem
in any previous release since 12.04

I was also affected by this. rm -rf ~/.config/compiz-1 fixed it. Now
dash is working as expected. compiz-1 was re-created.

[Bug 1940758] [NEW] gedit file edit causes loss of birth time

2021-08-21 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

gedit 3.38.1-1
Ubuntu 21.04

Editing a previously created file with gedit and saving it causes loss
of the original file birth time and updates it to the time of the file
save. File birth time should not be changed. Compare this with nano,
which does not change the file birth time. File birth time can be shown
with the stat command.

[Bug 1837437] Re: disk content permanently lost when changing LUKS password

2021-08-21 Thread Walt Pritz
Sorry to add to an old issue, but I can confirm the issue persists under
Ubuntu 18.04.5.

I can reliably reproduce the issue when installing 18.04.5 on physical
hardware, Lenovo ThinkPad P15 (20SUS5LJ00). The error message after
changing the passphrase in gnome-disks is:

Error changing passphrase

Error changing passphrase on device /dev/nvme1n1p3: Failed to add
the new passphrase: Invalid argument (udisks-error-quark, 0)

Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command only once, as it
will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 1940749

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-
bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this
functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 1940131] Re: sudo ua attach is not working

2021-08-21 Thread Chad Smith
Thanks @slava for the confirmation. So, no that image base is not
derived from a supported Canonical cloud image. If you have control over
what base image you are using for your machine launch or imaging
process, or if you can talk to your cloud provider about obtaining
official images from here https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/ it may make
your use-case a bit easier in the future.

That said, if your or your cloud providers are unable to move to
Canonical official Ubuntu cloud images, we have also landed a fix in tip
of ubuntu-advantage-tools[1] that will avoid that specific traceback you
hit in this bug report. Once ubuntu-advantage-tools version > 27.2 is
released, you will be able to drop your uaclient.conf settings_overrides
without fear of Tracebacks.

[Bug 1231091] Re: Screenreader starts, but does not work with installer (ubiquity) in live session

2021-08-21 Thread Gordon N. Squash
It's been well over a month since I last reported on this, so I think
it's fine time I reported about the latest on the subject.

My above comment was mostly correct and slightly wrong. Interestingly,
stock Ubuntu 21.10 does not use Wayland (on my setup, at least, with
Intel integrated graphics); it uses X11, just like Ubuntu MATE does.
But interestingly, Ubiquity on stock Ubuntu starts the *GNOME Shell*,
whereas Ubiquity on Ubuntu MATE only starts Marco, a generic Ubiquity
top panel (which is supposed to be stocked with indicators, but
Ubiquity's panel only works with Unity indicators and not Ayatana
indicators), the MATE Settings Daemon, and a handful of other programs.

Furthermore, like I suspected, both Ubuntu and Ubuntu MATE start the
Ubiquity greeter as root, except their *effective* user IDs are both the
respective live session users (`ubuntu` and `ubuntu-mate`,
respectively). The latter is done probably to allow communication over
D-Bus, because my experiments show that if the process' effective UID is
not 999 (the live session user), neither version of Ubiquity will
interact with the screen reader.

Here's the proof. The first snippet was taken on an Ubuntu 21.10 system
(that took me eons to download); the second is from an Ubuntu MATE 21.10
system.

Ubuntu:

As you can see, the Ubiquity process (`/usr/bin/python3
/usr/lib/ubiquity/bin/ubiquity` on both of them) runs with a real UID of
root, but an effective UID of either `ubuntu` or `ubuntu-mate` (the
latter was chopped off by `ps`). So there's no dissimilarity there.

***However...***

With the screen reader enabled, from a command line (Ctrl-Alt-F2) I
tried launching a text editor on each of them, first as user 999:

   DISPLAY=":0" pluma &

...and then as root:

   sudo env DISPLAY=":0" pluma &

...and then with a real UID of 0 and an effective UID of 999, just like
Ubiquity:

   sudo env DISPLAY=":0" setpriv --ruid 0 --rgid 0 --euid 999 --egid 999
--init-groups pluma &

The first command cooperated with the screen reader on both systems
(i.e., the screen reader told me stuff like "Edit menu... Select All
Ctrl-A"). The last two commands worked fine on Ubuntu but not on Ubuntu
MATE.

I tried these experiments also on the live desktop, not just at the
Ubiquity greeter. The results were the same regardless of whether I
tried it on the live desktop or on the Ubiquity greeter.

Clearly, Ubuntu and Ubuntu MATE are configured differently, somehow
pertaining to user IDs allowed to use accessibility features. But
where?

I ran the above experiments, but through `strace -s 1048576` to capture
all (or most) communications going on between pluma / gedit and D-Bus.
The resu

[Bug 1940756] [NEW] VirtualBox always using mic, breaks all audio playback

2021-08-21 Thread Freedom Bacon
Public bug reported:

KDE's system tray shows Virtualbox is always using the microphone, even
when no gust is configured to use it. When all the guests are stopped,
there is no notification about the microphone. The serious problem is
that when Virtualbox is using the microphone, it screws up all audio
playback in the guests and the host. All sound has a static-like hissing
mixed into. It happens whether sound playback in the guest (also Ubuntu
20.04) or the host, when playing back web streams, or playing back local
files in a variety of media players such as Clementine or VLC. The
problem happens when the guest's audio controller is set to ICH AC97 and
Intel ICH 9. Disabling audio input on the guest makes no difference
either. The only thing close to a work around I've found is to
completely disable audio on all guests. Due to the nature of some of my
VMs, that is very undesirable.

Re: [Bug 1940749] Re: Hardinfo 'storage' output not showing devices

2021-08-21 Thread Timothy Brockway
Hello Ian,

I posted an update in the bug report which states the following:
HardInfo is a small application that displays information about your
hardware and operating system. Currently it knows about PCI, ISA PnP, USB,
IDE, SCSI, Serial and parallel port devices. The Processor is Intel(R)
Pentium(R) Gold 7505 @ 2.00GHz x 4 and the Storage device is an SSD, BC711
NVMe SK hynix(128GB). I suspect hardinfo doesn't recognize the SSD and it
doesn't like the extended flags in /proc/cpuinfo Otherwise hardinfo seems
to function normally. Please let me know if anyone has an SSD that is being
recognized and I will keep digging. Thank you

Let me know if this is inaccurate. Sincerely,
Tim

[Bug 1779764] Re: GNU Parallel is nagware

2021-08-21 Thread tbenst
The requirement to type "will cite" has always bothered me a bit. I must
use literally thousands of software packages in my (biosciences)
research, and only only "GNU parallel" does this nag. For example, I use
parallel to launch multiple copies of a file conversion software. It is
not customary in my field to cite the file conversion software even
though this is essential to the research at hand, and parallel is a
(very welcome! much appreciated!) convenience with a time-saving
contribution. Many journals restrict citations to the <50 most
pertinent, and one never sees Matlab or Python making the cut in a
biology journal. It would be crazy noise to have 10,000 citations in a
paper on the entire software dependency chain.

It is a bit irksome to type "will cite" when knowing that 1) it's not a
contract & not actually required, and 2) it's not true.

[Bug 1940754] [NEW] All scans via sane deteriotad by compression artefacts for Brother MFC-L2710DW

2021-08-21 Thread Karl Kastner
Public bug reported:

I have a Brother MFC-L2710DW printer with integrated flatbed scanner.
There are two major problems when scanning with sane:

The first problem is that the quality of all scanned images is very poor
due to 8x8 pixel JPG compression artefacts. The root coarse seems to be
the backend, as the result is the same independently if the image is
acquired through xsane or scanimage.

The second problem is that sane only scans up to 300 dpi. 1200 dpi is
not offered at all and for 600 dpi the error message "Failed to start
scanner: Invalid argument" is displayed. Interestingly the message is
displayed after the scanner has completed the scan, but the data seems
not to be received or understood by sane.

The scanner works fine in Ubuntu with the commercial software vuescan,
which rules out a firmware bug or malfunctioning of the scanner itself.

[Bug 1940753] Re: Audio devices not detected on kernel 5.11.0-27-generic. Getting "Dummy Device" instead

2021-08-21 Thread ta-kub
Quick update; I just rebooted my computer to boot into 5.4.0-26-generic
and the sounds broken again. Although I can see the output devices under
pavucontrol; GP104 (High Definition Audio Controller Digital Stereo
(HDMI 2) and Built-in Audio Digital Stereo (IEC958). Playing back any
media I can see the audio levels changing but nothing comes out of the
speakers. Speaker volume is up. A thing to note is that when I run a
live usb version the audio output is called something along the lines of
"line in"

[Bug 1940753] [NEW] Audio devices not detected on kernel 5.11.0-27-generic. Getting "Dummy Device" instead

2021-08-21 Thread tareq ahmed
Public bug reported:

Release: 20.04
What you expected to happen: Speakers and microphone to be detected
What happened instead: Neither speakers or microphones are being detected.
Pavucontrol shows Dummy Device

I recently bought new computer parts: Intel i7 10700k, MSI MAG z490
Tomahawk, 1TB Kingston m.2 drive and installed Kubuntu. after
installation has finished, neither my speakers, USB microphone or my my
wacom graphics tablet are being detected. Plugging in headphones via the
front headphone jack doesn't work either. This is on kernel
5.11.0-27-generic. When booting to kernel 5.4.0-26-generic via grub,
audio works normally.

I ran alsa-info and attached the output here.

Someone on the Kubuntu IRC mentioned that it may be related to another
bug (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208555) and suggested
that I file a bug report here and boot into 5.4.0-26-generic until a fix

I'm not too familiar with bug reports so I may have missed something,
feel free to ask and I'll get back as soon as I can

Hi,

I tried this on my lenovo T420 laptop, running Ubuntu 20.04.3.

The flags entry in /proc/cpuinfo is 100 characters long.

I ran hardinfo (0.6-alpha) and checked the "Storage" pane and displayed
this (correct) info:-

-SCSI Disks-
ATA CT1000MX500SSD1
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GT33N

[Bug 1912861] Re: Virtualbox missing vboxautostart-service.sh

2021-08-21 Thread Cameron Tacklind
@costamagnagianfranco I think this is incorrect. Looking at the official
script,
https://www.virtualbox.org/svn/vbox/trunk/src/VBox/Installer/linux/vboxautostart-service.sh,
 I see:
- a `start()` function that runs:
- `/usr/lib/virtualbox/VBoxAutostart` with params:
- `--start --config $VBOXAUTOSTART_CONFIG` where:
- `VBOXAUTOSTART_CONFIG=/etc/vbox/autostart.cfg`

@guiverc I am not able to run `apport-collect 1912861` successfully as I
am running a headless server and `apport-collect` tries to launch a
browser to auth, which fails.

[Bug 1940749] [NEW] Hardinfo 'storage' output not showing devices

2021-08-21 Thread Timothy Brockway
Public bug reported:

I installed Hardinfo on my Dell Inspiron 3501 running Ubuntu 20.04. I
installed hardinfo:

sudo apt-get install -y hardinfo

When I select 'Storage' in the GUI nothing populates. The pane/window
is totally blank. I have run hardinfo in the command line and I am
receiving the following error:

Warning: truncated a line (probably flags list) longer than 896 bytes
while reading /proc/cpuinfo.

Upon further inspection the 'Flags' field in /proc/cpuinfo is populated
with a large quantity of strings and characters. Therefore this error
is to be expected in my opinion.

I just ran:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall hardinfo

This did not fix the issue with 'storage'. I have checked the other
"sections" of the GUI and all other portions of the output seem to be
functioning normally. I have also posted the link of the forum in which
I first reported the issue to the askubuntu community, where I have
detailed all the steps I have taken so far to attempt to fix the issue.

[Bug 1939306] Re: latest shim-signed fails on Lenovo T480 with Secure boot

2021-08-21 Thread Valtteri Vuorikoski
Not clear if it's the same issue, but on a Thinkpad T14s, new shim fails
to boot anything except the Canonical-signed grub. Both hash and key
MOKs seem to be ignored (blue screeen with Security Violation 0x1A for
signed executables). Downgrading to the version of shim-signed specified
in the initial report makes hash and key MOKs work again. shim verbose
reporting was not checked.

[Bug 1940426] Re: Disable ftrace of sbi functions

2021-08-21 Thread Ubuntu Kernel Bot
This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves
the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the
results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-
hirsute' to 'verification-done-hirsute'. If the problem still exists,
change the tag 'verification-needed-hirsute' to 'verification-failed-
hirsute'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

2021-08-21 Thread Fabrice Creuzot
If new GTK 2 package is acceptable in Ubuntu, the source package can
also build a GTK 2 version of the program.

(The Debian package currently build a version for GTK 3 and a version
for GTK 4)

2021-08-21 Thread Fabrice Creuzot
Public bug reported:

Please sync awf-gtk 2.5.0-5 (universe) from Debian experimental (main)

I am the developer of the program. I packaged and submitted it to Debian.
The package was accepted and uploaded to Debian experimental.
This is a new package for Ubuntu.

There is a little error with the changelog date.

All changelog entries:

awf-gtk (2.5.0-5) experimental; urgency=low

[Bug 1678187] Re: Removing a linux-image-extra package fails, if /boot is about full

2021-08-21 Thread Jarno Suni
Hayden Clark, so you use "oem" kernels. If you do not need "generic"
kernels, you can save a lot of space in /boot by deleting all "generic"
kernels. Probably the easiest way to do it in your case is "sudo apt
autoremove linux-generic-hwe-20.04". Check that it does not remove any
"oem" kernels. If that does not work, you can use "sudo linux-purge
--choose --optimize" and choose all "generic" kernels for purging.

[Bug 1937115] Re: Unable to boot/install Impish daily in UEFI boot mode

2021-08-21 Thread Bob H
recently... while booting the ISO image for the Impish live build
the following error lines are displayed:

[ 1.501001] gpio gpiochip: (gpio_aaeon): tried to insert a GPIO chip with
zero lines
[ 1.501013] gpiochip_add_data_with_key: GPIOs O..-1 (gpio_aaeon) failed to

zero lines
[ 0.197161] gpiochip_add_data_with_key: GPIOs O..-1 (gpio_aaeon) failed to
register. -22

After a pause the iso then continues to boot and a successful
installation proceeds without any signs of further error.

this first occurred at 20210820 (since fix released)

I have an own build PC with nVidia graphics and use 'safe graphics' to boot the
iso
Prior to this I was not experiencing the problems that had been occurring with
Dell laptops.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to
review all reported bugs in a timely manner.

The following errors can be found in UbiquitySyslog.txt which was
automatically attached to this bug report:

It's possible you had a bad write to your media or for some other reason
its contents could not be read. When having such problems please try the
option to check the integrity of the image from the installer boot menu,
and if this confirms that the media is corrupt, try re-writing and/or

[Bug 1940703] Re: Ubuntu cannot find module "l2arc_rebuild_enabled"

2021-08-21 Thread darkshvein
Simon, thank you for fast response,
I boot with HWE, and watch with l2arc_rebuild_enabled ,
tldr, zfs L2ARC cache persistent now after reboot. Awesome!
It is a small foggy situation with kernels, I was sure, that using default
ubuntu kernel. 🤔

It is possible to add this note in any Ubuntu zfs packages description? maybe
'zfsutils-linux'

2021-08-21 Thread Akbarkhon Variskhanov
** Description changed:
