[Bug 1955870] [NEW] random_device: rdrand failed when using libsass 3.6.3 on some AMD Ryzen CPUs
Public bug reported: https://github.com/sass/libsass/issues/3151 When using an application that uses libsass, the application crashes (segfaults) with `random_device: rdrand failed`. ## Reproduction 1. Start an application that uses libsass, e.g. simply run `hugo` or `npm install node-sass` or any library that depends on it. ## Actual results ``` terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::runtime_error' what(): random_device: rdrand failed Cancelled (Segfault) ``` ## Expected result Hugo, node-sass etc. work ## Version This happens on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with libsass / libsass1 version 3.6.3. The problem is fixed in libsass 3.6.5, see https://github.com/sass/libsass/issues/3151 and https://github.com/sass/libsass/releases/tag/3.6.5 ## Cause 1. Some AMD CPUs seem to return a non-random number, but still claim success. See e.g. [reports on Twitter](https://twitter.com/FiloSottile/status/1125840275346198529). 2. `std:random_device` throws an exception. 3. libsass is unable to cope, throws the exception up into the caller. 4. The calling application cannot possibly handle this error and fails. ## Fix Update libsass from version 3.6.3 to 3.6.5. ** Affects: libsass (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: https://github.com/sass/libsass/issues/3151 When using an application that uses libsass, the application crashes (segfaults) with `random_device: rdrand failed`. ## Reproduction 1. The calling application cannot possibly handle this error and fails. - The underlying root cause is that libsass is using cryptographically - secure random numbers. Why? I don't see why CSS would need that. I would - think that pseudo-random is sufficient. - ## Fix Update libsass from version 3.6.3 to 3.6.5. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1955870 Title: random_device: rdrand failed when using libsass 3.6.3 on some AMD Ryzen CPUs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libsass/+bug/1955870/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1955862] [NEW] Headphones have a faint square/triangle wave sound when unmuted
Public bug reported: This issue can be replicated on both Ubuntu 21.10 and 22.04 installs, but is not present on the live USB version of either. It is also not an issue on Fedora 35 (using aplay directly to device) nor Windows 10. The issue can be resolved until reboot by unplugging and replugging several times, as well as switching between speaker and headphones. I am not sure of a deterministic way to replicate this workaround. Alsamixer reports the chipset as ALC287, but according to specs it is actually an ALC3306. I am not sure if this is related. I can do any additional testing as necessary to narrow down the issue. [Bug 1955445] Re: ubuntu mate - on adjusting monitor.preferences maximized screen buttons are covered by panel
** Also affects: ubuntu-mate Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: - this has been reported before, so I'll shortly explore for duplicate(s) + reported at https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-control- + center/issues/688 it was noted earlier today after a clean install of this same iso to hp dc7700 (which shares the same monitors that this box uses), so this was a live test looking for the issue if you look at the picture; the terminal was maximized (on my lower but primary display) but it's controls are now hidden below the panel. maybe this is a design decision; but it's not what I'd expect. On different Monitor.Preference settings I do not get this behavior. ** expected results when a window is maximized; I'd not expect the window to be part-drawn underneath the panel ** actual results when a terminal/firefox (occurs all windows) is maximized; the top title bar of the window gets drawn underneath the panel is is thus difficult to use. Yes I can unmaximize using the bottom panel and if I'm very careful with mouse; drag it away from top. ** caveat this is default settings; but it occurs when themes are changed too. HOWEVER it only occurs with certain screen orientations. I could not create this issue with only a single screen, or a conventional left- right display setup. + (I'm still convinced this was experienced before; but I didn't find + duplicates.. [Bug 1955854] [NEW] After update to linux kernel 5.13.0-22-generic, cannot power off, cannot reboot, and cannot sleep PC.
Public bug reported: I'm running Kubuntu 21.10 on a Lenovo Ideapad 320, dual booting with Windows 10. After installing the kernel update to 5.13.0-22-generic, shutting down, rebooting, sleeping, etc all fail in the same manner; the display shuts off, but the power remains on (the LED powerlight doesn't go off if powering off, flash if sleeping, etc). [Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise
I just came across this bug after being forced to reinstall my main OS - I got my grub altered despite making no mistake when installing parallel ubuntu on different device. I was using 20.04 LTS and I am extremely disappointed with the reason: old bug that made installer not trusted. Fortunately it was my private computer and I was able to make backup of all files so the restoration won't take more than hours. For me this should not only be *critical* but fixed and backported into all supported editions, LTS including. It's very dangerous and time/money consuming error. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1396379 Title: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1396379/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1955851] [NEW] DEP8 authenticatied smb test failure
Public bug reported: The DEP8 authenticated cifs test is currently failing. The reason is an incorrect (but that seemed to work previously) smb user creation: echo "${password}\n${password}" | smbpasswd -s -a ${username} This is missing an "-e" at least, so that \n is correctly interpreted: echo -e "${password}\n${password}" | smbpasswd -s -a ${username} I'm at a loss to explain why only s390x was/is affected. In fact, I reproduced the test failure in a plain amd64 VM. I also don't understand why in the failed s390x logs the smb user was created, apparently: Setting samba password for the smbtest2765 user + echo Setting samba password for the smbtest2765 user + smbpasswd -s -a smbtest2765 + echo 2765\n2765 Added user smbtest2765. When I reproduced it in both a s390x vm, and amd64, I got: + echo 'Setting samba password for the smbtest24990 user' Setting samba password for the smbtest24990 user + smbpasswd -s -a smbtest24990 + echo '24990\n24990' Unable to get new password. Anyway, the bug seems obvious, and also affects the samba DEP8 tests (which, also for unknown reasons, haven't failed (yet?)). ** Affects: autofs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Assignee: Andreas Hasenack (ahasenack) Status: In Progress ** Tags: update-excuse update-excuses -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1955851 Title: DEP8 authenticatied smb test failure To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/autofs/+bug/1955851/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1955850] [NEW] /etc/X11/Xresources no longer loaded, error in patch
Public bug reported: After upgrading from 21.04 to 21.10, my /etc/X11/Xresources/ directory no longer loads on login. Looking at the sources, I think this can be traced to: - Switching from a custom Xsession file to the upstream Xsession file in 3.38.0-1ubuntu1, combined with - An oversight in `debian/patches/ubuntu/xresources_is_a_dir.patch` Looking at [that patch](https://salsa.debian.org/gnome- team/gdm/-/blob/ubuntu/master/debian/patches/ubuntu/xresources_is_a_dir.patch), it has: ```diff --- a/data/Xsession.in +++ b/data/Xsession.in @@ -122,6 +122,13 @@ fi if [ -f "$sysresources" ]; then xrdb -nocpp -merge "$sysresources" +elif [ -d "$sysresources" ]; then +# directory of Xresources files on Debian/Ubuntu +for i in `ls "$sysresources"` ; do +if [ -r "$sysresources/$i" -a -f "$sysresources/$i" ] && expr "$i" : '^[[:alnum:]_-]\+$' > /dev/null; then +xrdb -nocpp -merge "$sysresources/$i" +fi +done fi if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then ``` However, looking a few lines further up in [the original Xsession.in file](https://salsa.debian.org/gnome- team/gdm/-/blob/ubuntu/master/data/Xsession.in#L97), I see: ```sh if [ -f /etc/X11/Xresources ]; then sysresources=/etc/X11/Xresources else sysresources=/usr/etc/X11/Xresources fi ``` In other words, if `/etc/X11/Xresources` is a directory, the `sysresources` variable is never set correctly, so the patch should also modify this part of the script. I have observed this broken behavior on version 41~rc-0ubuntu2, but looking at the ubuntu/master branch (as linked above), it still seems broken there. I'm currently testing this patch: ```diff --- Xsession.orig 2021-12-27 22:05:09.038863375 +0100 +++ Xsession2021-12-27 22:05:33.143057433 +0100 @@ -111,7 +111,7 @@ usermodmap="$HOME/.Xmodmap" userxkbmap="$HOME/.Xkbmap" -if [ -f /etc/X11/Xresources ]; then +if [ -e /etc/X11/Xresources ]; then sysresources=/etc/X11/Xresources else sysresources=/usr/etc/X11/Xresources ``` I don't know if it works yet, since I need to log out for that, and close my browser, so need to submit this report first ;-) ``` $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 21.10 Release:21.10 $ apt-cache policy gdm3 gdm3: Installed: 41~rc-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 41~rc-0ubuntu2 Version table: *** 41~rc-0ubuntu2 500 500 http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu impish/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ``` ** Affects: gdm3 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1955850 Title: /etc/X11/Xresources no longer loaded, error in patch To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1955850/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode. To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1955845/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package. [Bug 1396379] Re: installer uses first EFI system partition found even when directed otherwise
This is still happening in Ubuntu 21.10, and the installer interface is very confusing. I wanted to create an Ubuntu installer on an external drive, so I connected the Ubuntu 21.10 live USB to one port, and an USB SSD to another port. When installing, I made sure to choose /dev/sdc (the usb ssd drive) as my target external device both for installing my system and for installing the bootloader (an explicit option in the modern installer). In the end, ubuntu installed its uefi files on my internal nvme drive efi partition, making both my system and the external usb ssd non bootable. My 2c: this is serious. But if it can't be solved because it's too hard... just don't let the user select their bootloader device, and issue a "BIG FAT WARNING: YOUR MAIN EFI PARTITION - /dev/nvme0p1n1 - will be modified!" message. Then I can choose what to do. I would expect such behaviour from Windows. Not from Ubuntu.

[Bug 1753509] Re: avahi-daemon adds/installs every printer on network
Mathias Weyland (launchpad-weyland), thanks for the link to the patched GTK, thispatch is generally a good idea as it is not a good idea of a print dialog talking directly to IPP printers, circumventing CUPS. The problems are the following: 1. A typical desktop application sends the data to get printed in PDF format, but not all IPP printers understand PDF. The driverless IPP standards only require one of the four print data formats PDF, Apple Raster, PWG Raster, and PCLm. As PDF is a complex vector graphics format and the other 3 are simple raster formats, cheap printers usually do not understand PDF, so the dialog sending a job directly to the printer would not work here. When printing through a CUPS queue, CUPS detects which format the printer understands and converts if needed. 2. An essential functionality when printing from a desktop application is spooling, storing the print job on disk when receiving it, so the the dialog can close quickly and allow the user continuing to work in his application. Many, especially cheaper IPP printers do not have such capability, the dialog itself also does not spool AFAIK. Spooling is usually a task of CUPS (CUPS is a so-called print spooler). Therefoe printing should always go through CUPS. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1753509 Title: avahi-daemon adds/installs every printer on network To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-filters/+bug/1753509/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 790216] Re: Make vlc more resilent with unreliable streaming content
It is still an issue in 2021, with VLC (tested on an old Raspberry Pi): VLC media player 3.0.16 Vetinari (revision 1.0.6-1682-g88158c836) VLC version 3.0.16 Vetinari (1.0.6-1682-g88158c836) Compiled by pi on serge-testpi (Nov 10 2021 15:40:45) Compiler: gcc version 10.2.1 20210110 (Raspbian 10.2.1-6+rpi1) To summarize the current status: - VLC will stop playing if the network stream is disrupted. This is painful in headless operation, because you can not detect it. If queried via the remote control socket, "is_playing" command returns '1', but no reconnecting happens ever. - VLC developer Rémi Denis-Courmont (rdenis) 's is aware of this situstion and his statement is that this is a feature and will not be changed. - Alternatives can/should be used if you plan to use a media player as a daemon/background service My 2 cents on the topics: it is a nice idea to protect the internet infrastucture by default. But doing it by sacrifying resiliency, and without an option to change the behaviour, is suboptimal. But this is how free software goes: without guarantee to fitness for any purpose... And sometimes it is true for paid software, too. Anyway, I'd like to thank the VLC developers work put in the project so far ! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/790216 Title: Make vlc more resilent with unreliable streaming content To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/vlc/+bug/790216/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In any case, an updated GTK 3 patch for Focal is available in the following for those who came here with this problem: https://launchpad.net/~launchpad-weyland/+archive/ubuntu/libgtk3-no- avahi/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1753509 Title: avahi-daemon adds/installs every printer on network To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups-filters/+bug/1753509/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1477106] Re: Cups directive "Browsing Off" ignored by print dialog
Since the bug report is very old, the original cause for what is described here may have changed. But on a focal system, the gtk print dialog populates the printer list on its own. Even if cups is not running locally, it queries avahi-daemon and produces a list of printers. This is causing a number of issues, including printer duplicates, printer entries that don't work, printers that are labeled in a weird way etc. It is silly that such broken behaviour cannot be turned off. In any case, until this improves, users may choose to use a patched version of gtk3 where the broken avahi lookup is removed from the printer dialog: https://launchpad.net/~launchpad-weyland/+archive/ubuntu/libgtk3-no- avahi/ Also see lp:1379359 and lp:1753509 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1477106 Title: Cups directive "Browsing Off" ignored by print dialog To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gtk+3.0/+bug/1477106/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
