[Bug 1960864] Re: [MIR] plocate

2022-03-07 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
For the small but existing incompatibilities I think it would be great
to have an entry in the release notes [1] about this. Added a bug task
to reflect that.

[Bug 1960864] Re: [MIR] plocate

2022-03-07 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Thank you Steve.

So we do not have to revert back to mlocate and I think we can mark this
as "Fix Released" as the change already happened before we realized a
security review is needed (see comment #4).

2022-03-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears this crash has only been reported twice, ever. It's also in
an unsupported package (compiz).

If you are using a desktop then I would recommend replacing the graphics
card so as to get a different driver. Otherwise please use GNOME
(regular Ubuntu).

[Bug 1963831] Re: Open-vm-tools 12.0.0 has been released

2022-03-07 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Hi John,
as discussed before due to some delays in upstream release timing this will no
more make Ubuntu 22.04 immediately.

We'll stay on 11.3.5 for now.

But since we regularly backport open-vm-tools we will - in the 22.10
cycle - merge version 12.0.0 (or later) and then backport these to
22.04.

[Bug 1960864] Re: [MIR] plocate

2022-03-07 Thread Steve Beattie
I reviewed plocate 1.1.15-1ubuntu2 as checked into jammy. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

plocate is a locate implementation based on posting lists and io_uring,
intended as a drop-in replacement for mlocate.

- No CVE History.
- Build-Depends on liburing and libzstd
- The pre/post inst/rm scripts adds a plocate group, sets up
alternatives to place it as the locate, and sets up the systemd timer.
Things are cleaned up in the pre/post-rm scripts.
- No init scripts.
- One systemd timer and service to run updatedb
- No dbus services
- No setuid binaries, plocate binary is setgid.
- binaries in PATH: plocate, plocate-build, and updatedb.plocate
- No sudo fragments
- No polkit files
- No udev rules
- test
  - no unit or other build-time tests
  - autopkgtests: a basic test plus a more complex test that tests
visibility across differing users.
- One cron job that exits immediately because systemd timers are available.
- No build warnings or errors, lintian with one minor warning:
  command-with-path-in-maintainer-script

- No processes spawned.
- Memory management is okay, generally uses C++ style
  allocations / deallocations.
- File IO is mostly performed on static names or parsed out of
  /proc/self/mountinfo. The exception is the db argument to plocate;
however, if alternate db files are passed, a child process that drops
privilege is forked to search the passed db file.
- Logging is mostly done by perror, and is done safely.
- Environment variable usage is okay.
- Privileged functions (setgid) are used to drop privs and are okay
  (returned errors are checked for).
- No use of cryptography / random number sources.
- Sole use of temp files in database-builder is okay, uses O_TMPFILE if
  available.
- No use of networking.
- No use of WebKit.
- No use of PolicyKit.

- No significant cppcheck results.
- No significant Coverity results, a couple of issues that could possibly
warrant further investigation. Recommend upstream project make use of
  the public https://scan.coverity.com service.

Code generally feels modern and readable.

Security team ACK for promoting plocate to main.

2022-03-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate an useful symbolic stack trace).
This might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on
your system at the time of the report. Please upgrade your system to the
latest package versions. If you still encounter the crash, please file a
new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

[Bug 1963818] Re: Upgrading to 22.04 on wayland session closes session

2022-03-07 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1962704] Re: iwlwifi: Unknown symbol iwl_mei_is_connected

2022-03-07 Thread You-Sheng Yang
** Description changed:

+ [SRU Justification]
+
+ [Impact]
+
+ backport-iwlwifi-dkms has a few problems to prevent it from loading
+ either kernel modules itself or the runtime firmware correctly.
+
+ The first issue is "unknown symbol iwl_mei_is_connected" error at module
+ probing. This affects revsions >= 9241 where iwlmei module was first
+ introduced in commit 71e53a8aae59 ("mirror: multi-input commit"). This
+ can be addressed by cherry picking commit cc7d59edeeae
+ ("[BUGFIX][NOUPSTREAM] iwlwifi: bump min kernel version for iwlmei") of
+ rev 9255 that bumps iwlmei prerequisite kernel version to 5.14, and
+ commit 87dce6e9817a ("[BUGFIX][NOUPSTREAM] iwlwifi: iwlmei isn't going
+ to be merged anytime soon") of rev 9543 that bumps to 5.20. Therefore
+ this affects Impish & Jammy that currently have 9340.
+
+ The second problem is that even we addressed 9340 with aforementioned
+ fix backported, the iwlwifi module may still fail to load firmware that
+ is known fixed in at least 9580 that is being proposed. This would
+ affects Focal oem-5.14 as well.
+
+ [Fix]
+
+ Bump to 9580 that fixes both issues stated above.
+
+ [Test Case]
+
+ Compile and run against Focal oem-5.14/hwe-5.13/hwe-5.15 kernels, as
+ well as Impish 5.13 and Jammy 5.15.
+
+ [Where problems could occur]
+
+ While the revision number represents the commits since the git root
+ commit of backport-iwlwifi, this is going to back port more than a
+ thousand commits for Focal (8324 -> 9580) and 240 ones for Impish/Jammy
+ (9340 -> 9580), there can always be issue like we have here now or later
+ for kernels of a more recent version. While this package is to enable
+ people running legacy kernels to be able to enjoy their new toys, new
+ hardware support and bug fixes shall be backported as long as needed to
+ justify its name "backport-iwlwifi-dkms" here.
+
+ == original bug report ==
+
Since backport-iwlwifi version 9241[1], a new module iwlmei was
introduced but not yet included in the dkms.conf installed. This fails
  the kernel module loading with:

- iwlwifi: Unknown symbol iwl_mei_is_connected (err -2)
+   iwlwifi: Unknown symbol iwl_mei_is_connected (err -2)

[Bug 1955882] Re: MT7921[14c3:7961] ASPM is disabled and it affects power consumption

2022-03-07 Thread AceLan Kao
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
MT7921 is disabled by default, and it affects the power consumption.

  [Fix]
MTK pointed out we need this commit which is included in v5.16-rc1
-bf3747ae2e25 mt76: mt7921: enable aspm by default
+    bf3747ae2e25 mt76: mt7921: enable aspm by default
+ After ASPM is enabled, we found the card disappears after reboot sometimes,
so MTK provides another commit for it
+
https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-mediatek/patch/70e27cbc652cbdb78277b9c691a3a5ba02653afb.1641540175.git.obj...@gmail.com/

  [Test]
Verified on Dell machines with MT7921 wifi card.

  [Where problems could occur]
- Enable device ASPM is always risky, but MT7921 is a rather new device,
- and MTK submitted the patch at June, so it should be safe to enable ASPM
- on this new device and there is no follow up fixes commit after ASPM is
enabled.
+ Enable device ASPM is always risky, we've done our best to test these
patches, and no regression could be found.

I see that we've got a new thermald version (2.4.7) in the archive. I
