[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

Fix released for Firrefox (Nightly) 125.
Since a few days, I can't launch Gpodder (podcast program) anymore, is it also
related to this bug or is it something different ?

[Bug 2057990] [NEW] On Xubuntu noble-daily (20240315) the welcome dialog doesn't load

2024-03-14 Thread Leonardo Müller
Public bug reported:

When testing "Install (no Network) in Xubuntu Desktop amd64 in Noble
Daily" on a QEMU virtual machine, it was noticed the welcome dialog
never started. I expected it would load as "maybe-ubiquity" was present
in /proc/cmdline.

The VM was started with:

qemu-system-x86_64 -accel kvm -net none -hda xub2404Daily.img -cdrom
noble-desktop-amd64.iso -cpu host -smp cores=4,threads=2 -m 4G -device

Public bug reported:

I added llvm and gcc toolchains to the affected packages list here based
on some internet reports, not my own testing:

[Bug 2057980] Re: Installation crashes

2024-03-14 Thread Paul White
From UbiquitySyslog.txt which was added to this bug report:

Mar 14 22:49:57 ubuntu kernel: [ 477.899255] SQUASHFS error: zlib

Mar 14 22:49:57 ubuntu kernel: [ 477.899277] SQUASHFS error: Failed to read

It's possible you had a bad write to your installation media or for some
other reason its contents could not be read correctly. If you've tried
again and are still having problems you should try re-writing the image
to your media (and may be re-download the image too).

[Bug 2056696] Re: All Snaps are denied the ability to use DBus for notifications and apptray indicators in KDE-based flavors

2024-03-14 Thread Alex Murray
> Log: apparmor="DENIED" operation="dbus_method_call" bus="session"
path="/org/freedesktop/DBus" interface="org.freedesktop.DBus"
member="ListActivatableNames" mask="send" name="org.freedesktop.DBus"
pid=2950 label="snap.element-desktop.element-desktop"
peer_label="unconfined"

This is provided by the system-observe interface in snapd - currently it
looks like element-desktop does not plug this so the element-desktop
snap needs to be updated to include this.

> Log: apparmor="DENIED" operation="dbus_method_call" bus="session"

These are provided by the password-manager-service interface in snapd -
again currently it looks like element-desktop does not plug this so the
element-desktop snap needs to be updated to include this as well.

Finally, for the last two

> Log: apparmor="DENIED" operation="dbus_method_call" bus="session"
> path="/StatusNotifierItem" interface="org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties"
> member="GetAll" name=":1.45" mask="receive" pid=2950

> member="NewToolTip" mask="send" name="org.freedesktop.DBus" pid=2950
> label="snap.element-desktop.element-desktop" peer_pid=2394
> peer_label="plasmashell"

Yes this is due to the peer_label mismatch - previously plasmashell
would run without an AppArmor profile and so was "unconfined" - the most
recent apparmor release in Noble contains a new profile for plasmashell
in /etc/apparmor.d/plasmashell with the label "plasmashell" - and so now
the peer_label doesn't match.

This likely needs to be fixed on the snapd side (or we figure out a way
in apparmor to not ship this profile).

[Bug 2057965] Re: google-startup-scripts runs before cloud-init finished network setup

2024-03-14 Thread Brett Holman
> due to network not being fully set up when startup scripts are run.

google-startup-scripts.service starts well after the network is online,
so I think that the actual reason is that cc_apt_configure hasn't ran
yet when the startup script starts. The diff looks like some apt mirrors
configured by cloud-init, possibly via GCE's vendordata?

> This can be fixed by adding an explict `After=cloud-config.service` to
the google-startup-scripts.service file, which enforces the correct
ordering between google-startup-scripts and cloud-init.

+1 agreed, that should fix it. However if ssh login needs to be possible
(which I do not know) when the script runs, then you may want to order
after systemd-user-sessions.service instead (see this bug[1] for
context).

That all said, the second critical chain looks unusual - what took
~16.6s between sysinit.target and multi-user.target?

Admittedly the first OS was another Lubuntu and not Windows, but still,
it's not clear what conditions are necessary to reproduce this nor what
the exact symptoms are.

I mistakenly released this for xenial without noticing there are DEP8
errors in that ubuntu release. For some reason, they were not added as a
comment to this bug, I suppose it has something to do with xenial being
very much out of standard support.

In any case, the errors are:

This was introduced in 16.04.18, and indeed is not defined anywhere else
in the code.

It was also not seen in the verification, meaning some specific event or
situation needs to exist for that code path to be traversed.

To trigger that code, one has to:
a) apply all available updates
b) not be in a "needs reboot" state
c) configure update-manager to not tell you about a new LTS being available

Then we see the crash, and a bit earlier than in the test actually:

[Bug 1993837] Re: apparmor profile libvirt-qemu is too permissive

2024-03-14 Thread John Johansen
Yeah work needs to be done on this. Ideally it will go into upstream,
but I expect we (Canonical/Ubuntu) will have to do the work. The issue
is really just one of time, and priority. We have a huge backlog so
unless this gets prioritized its not going to happen soon.

[Bug 2056696] Re: All Snaps are denied the ability to use DBus for notifications and apptray indicators in KDE-based flavors

2024-03-14 Thread John Johansen
the rejects here are all from the snap.element-desktop.element-desktop
profile. We will need to dig into that profiles permissions. If its
getting all the right paths correct then I suspect the peer_label match
might be the issue.

[Bug 2047683] Re: Kernel build fails on debian/build/tools-perarch/tools/bpf/bpftool/vmlinux

2024-03-14 Thread Jason Youzwak
I experienced a similar issue building 6.5.0-25 on Ubuntu 22.04.

I followed the steps in the "Build Your Own Kernel" post:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/BuildYourOwnKernel

Specifically, the error occurs after I ran the build step with the
parameters:

fakeroot debian/rules binary-headers binary-generic binary-perarch

I tried the LLVM and CC tricks mentioned in the previous post, but it
did not help.

[Bug 2029473] Re: Backport Ubuntu Pro to Xenial

2024-03-14 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Version 0.96.20.10 passed in xenial/amd64 about 10 days ago (via an
ubuntu-advantage-tools update), but version 0.96.20.12 failed a few days
before. I triggered another run just in case.

If that new run also fails, then something is going on, and it has to be
sorted out before this update can be released.

[Bug 2051876] Re: tpm2_nvwrite using an offset causes a TPM error

2024-03-14 Thread Andrew Oswald
Hello again, Sudip, hope this message finds you well!

I attempted to recreate the issue using a cert whose footprint exceeds
the 1,024 byte TPM data bus by using two tpm2_nvwrite commands (the
second of which specifying --offset=1024) and I'm happy to report that
it's working!

However, we were experiencing the issue on HP gear and this is a Dell
laptop.. so I still need to test it on HP.

thanks again!

[Bug 2056506] Re: ubuntu-dock 89 crashes on gnome-shell 45 with signal 6 when right clicking on the dock [clutter_actor_dispose: assertion failed: (priv->parent == NULL)]

2024-03-14 Thread Roman
You are right, sorry. I rebooted the machine because gnome got stuck,
got a "do you want to send crash info", and thought that another crash
occurred after reboot, but actually it was before reboot.

While checking logs of current boot I saw a line that I don't understand:
Mar 14 19:19:16 gnome-shell[2140]: Extension ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com already
installed in /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com.
/usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ubuntu-d...@ubuntu.com will not be loaded

Is it expected? The same is written about all other system plugins.

And where are the updates? Fedora suppresses all this, although the same errors
are also present there.
Is it possible to make the grub suppress these messages?

also a bug whereby updating update-manager itself while update-manager
is running replaces its UI files with a version incompatible with the
already running handle of update-manager, subsequently causing a crash
when the latter references an widget existing only in the old UI file.

In other words, update-manager crashes if the user tries installing the
new update-manager release from inside itself.

Even though updates would have been installed successfully at that point
and subsequent runs of update-manager would not crash, the user is none
the wiser and is most likely left worried about his resulting system
  state.

  Test case
  -

  1. Have the old version of Update Manager installed and the proposed
version available in the Apt database, such that, in Jammy for example,
'apt install --dry-run --verbose-versions' would report

-   update-manager (1:22.04.9 => 1:22.04.18)
+   update-manager (1:22.04.9 => 1:22.04.19)

  2. Start update-manager from a terminal.

  3. Make sure 'Software Updater' is selected in the list. We don't care
about any other package for this test.

  4. Click 'Install now'.

The installation must complete successfully and the view must be
automatically recalculated. Verify that the application didn't crash (no
tracebacks in the terminal window) and confirm with 'apt policy update-
manager' that the new version was indeed installed.

  To note
  ---

The recalculated view will not include references to Ubuntu Pro (neither
news pane nor Ubuntu Pro updates section), as it is still the old
version of the program that is running.

  Regression potential

GTK is very finicky about its *.ui files; We must look out for other
widgets failing to map or being relocated.

[Bug 2057965] [NEW] google-startup-scripts runs before cloud-init finished network setup

2024-03-14 Thread Catherine Redfield
Public bug reported:

New GCP dailies are failing startup-script tests, due to network not
being fully set up when startup scripts are run. The failure can be
reproduced as follows:

Using startup_script.sh:
#!/bin/bash
cp /etc/apt/sources.list /tmp/startup-sources.list

$ gcloud compute instances create startup-test --image
daily-ubuntu-2204-jammy-v20240314 --image-project ubuntu-os-cloud-devel
--metadata-from-file=startup-script=startup_script.sh
[...]
$ ssh [INSTANCE IP]
> diff /tmp/startup-sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list
0a1,8
> ## Note, this file is written by cloud-init on first boot of an instance
> ## modifications made here will not survive a re-bundle.
> ## if you wish to make changes you can:
> ## a.) add 'apt_preserve_sources_list: true' to /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg
> ## or do the same in user-data
> ## b.) add sources in /etc/apt/sources.list.d
> ## c.) make changes to template file /etc/cloud/templates/sources.list.tmpl

On earlier images (such as ubuntu-2204-jammy-v20240307 in ubuntu-os-cloud) do
not show this behaviour. The change is due to a change in ubuntu-pro 31 (see
https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-pro-client/blob/dfe1f1ed4678c50240d4e251f41d33bb4034135e/debian/changelog#L40
for details) that removes a systemd ordering on cloud-config.service. As side
effect of this change was the removal of cloud-config.service (and
ubuntu-advantage.service) from systemd's critical chain.

On v20240307 (startup scripts execute correctly):
catred@startup-test-control:~$ systemd-analyze critical-chain
google-startup-scripts.service
The time when unit became active or started is printed after the "@" character.
The time the unit took to start is printed after the "+" character.

└─systemd-journald.socket @1.292s
  └─system.slice @1.068s
└─-.slice @1.068s

On v20240314 (startup scripts fail):
catred@startup-test:~$ systemd-analyze critical-chain
google-startup-scripts.service
The time when unit became active or started is printed after the "@" characte>
The time the unit took to start is printed after the "+" character.

google-startup-scripts.service +260ms
└─multi-user.target @29.237s
  └─chrony.service @30.240s +56ms
└─basic.target @13.364s
  └─sockets.target @13.225s
└─snap.lxd.user-daemon.unix.socket @26.765s
  └─sysinit.target @12.550s
└─cloud-init.service @7.933s +4.503s
  └─systemd-networkd-wait-online.service @6.741s +1.171s
└─systemd-networkd.service @6.593s +124ms
  └─network-pre.target @6.573s
└─cloud-init-local.service @4.478s +2.083s
  └─systemd-remount-fs.service @1.717s +64ms
└─systemd-fsck-root.service @1.510s +95ms
  └─systemd-journald.socket @1.193s
└─-.mount @974ms
  └─-.slice @974ms

This can be fixed by adding an explict `After=cloud-config.service` to the
google-startup-scripts.service file, which enforces the correct ordering
between google-startup-scripts and cloud-init.
