[Bug 2032164] Re: A general-proteciton exception during guest migration to unsupported PKRU machine
** Description changed: [Impact] When a host that supports PKRU initiates a guest that lacks PKRU support, the flag is enabled on the guest's fpstate. This information is then passed to userspace through the vcpu ioctl KVM_GET_XSAVE. However, a problem arises when the user opts to migrate the mentioned guest to another machine that does not support PKRU. In this scenario, the new host attempts to restore the guest's fpu registers. Nevertheless, due to the absence of PKRU support on the new host, a general-protection exception takes place, leading to a guest crash. [Fix] The problem is resolved by the following upstream commit: - ad856280ddea x86/kvm/fpu: Limit guest user_xfeatures to supported bits of XCR0 - - Additionally, a subsequent fix tackles the migration problem stemming from the earlier commit: - a1020a25e697 KVM: x86: Always enable legacy FP/SSE in allowed user XFEATURES + 18164f66e6c5 x86/fpu: Allow caller to constrain xfeatures when copying to uabi buffer + 8647c52e9504 KVM: x86: Constrain guest-supported xfeatures only at KVM_GET_XSAVE{2} [Test Plan] - 1. Set up two machines: one with PKRU support and the other without. - 2. Initiate a guest that lacks PKRU support on the machine with PKRU support. - 3. Utilize libvirt to migrate the aforementioned guest to a different machine that lacks PKRU support. - 4. The error emerges on the destination machine: - KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x8021 + Several scenarios need to be conducted to confirm the migration outcome. + Patched kernel with PKRU -> kernel with PKRU + Patched kernel with PKRU -> kernel without PKRU + Patched kernel without PKRU -> kernel with PKRU + Patched kernel without PKRU -> kernel without PKRU + Kernel with PKRU -> patched kernel with PKRU + Kernel with PKRU -> patched kernel without PKRU + Kernel without PKRU -> patched kernel with PKRU + Kernel without PKRU -> patched kernel without PKRU + Patched kernel with PKRU -> patched kernel without PKRU - If you're running a guest on an Intel machine without unrestricted mode - support, the failure can be most likely due to the guest entering an invalid - state for Intel VT. [Where problems could occur] The introduced commits will impact the guest migration process, potentially leading to failures and preventing the guest from operating successfully on the migration destination. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2032164 Title: A general-proteciton exception during guest migration to unsupported PKRU machine To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/2032164/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2057965] Re: google-startup-scripts runs before cloud-init finished network setup
** Description changed: + [ Impact ] + + In certain situations (consistently with ubuntu-pro=31.2 and cloud- + init=23.4.4), cloud-config.service has not completed before google- + startup-scripts.service runs. This can cause startup scripts that rely + on apt to fail, as cloud-init is responsible for reconfiguring + sources.list to point at the GCE archives. + + Since pro and cloud-init are backported to all older releases, this bug + will affect them too. + + The change that results in this race condition is the removal an + ordering condition between pro and cloud-init, so adding `After=cloud- + final.service` to google-startup-scripts.service should ensure that the + startup scripts are correctly run regardless of the ordering (or lack + thereof) between other services. + + [ Test Plan ] + + To reproduce: + + Using startup_script.sh: + #!/bin/bash + cp /etc/apt/sources.list /tmp/startup-sources.list + + $ gcloud compute instances create startup-test --image daily-ubuntu-2204-jammy-v20240314 --image-project ubuntu-os-cloud-devel --metadata-from-file=startup-script=startup_script.sh + [...] + $ ssh [INSTANCE IP] + > diff /tmp/startup-sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list + 0a1,8 + > ## Note, this file is written by cloud-init on first boot of an instance + > ## modifications made here will not survive a re-bundle. + > ## if you wish to make changes you can: + > ## a.) add 'apt_preserve_sources_list: true' to /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg + > ## or do the same in user-data + > ## b.) add sources in /etc/apt/sources.list.d + > ## c.) make changes to template file /etc/cloud/templates/sources.list.tmpl + > + 3,4c11,12 + < deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy main restricted + < # deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy main restricted + --- + > deb http://us-central1.gce.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy main restricted + > # deb-src http://us-central1.gce.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy main restricted + 8,9c16,17 + < deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy-updates main restricted + < # deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ jammy-updates main restricted + --- + [...] + + + Since this bug particularly effects first boot (once sources.list is configured with the GCE mirrors on first boot it will remain correctly configured), the best way to test that fix is correctly created will be to create an image with pro pinned at 31.2, cloud-init pinned at 23.4.4, and google-guest-agent install from proposed. [Bug 1977614] Re: [MIR] fdk-aac-free
The upstream chain for fdk-aac-free is precarious. The Debian package fdk-aac-free watches https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wtaymans/fdk-aac-stripped/ This version specifically removes the HE (High Efficiency) and HEv2 profiles which have patent concerns (see README.fedora). This version does not regularly sync from upstream: https://sourceforge.net/projects/opencore-amr/ Note that https://github.com/mstorsjo/fdk-aac is a downstream of Fraunhofer's code distributed on https://android.googlesource.com/platform/external/aac Jorge has reported a potential vulnerability to https://github.com/mstorsjo/fdk-aac/issues/167 and to Android's VRP. Android responded saying that they require a PoC and directed Jorge to https://bughunters.google.com/learn/invalid-reports/android- platform/5148417640366080/bugs-with-negligible-security- impact#unreachable-bugs fdk-aac-free is not being maintained by syncing with upstream which may contain security patches. Reporting issues about fdk-aac has so far been fruitless. Security could conclude our MIR now, but I suggest that fdk-aac-free is reviewed next cycle if the owning team plans to work with fdk-aac-free. Note that Fedora is also invested in fdk-aac-free and may share concerns if made aware. Side note: iiuc, the advantage of fdk-aac is that it works well on low resource systems, like cell phones and possibly for remote desktop. This advantage may not exist if HE profiles are stripped. If that is the case, there are aac alternatives. ** Bug watch added: github.com/mstorsjo/fdk-aac/issues #167 https://github.com/mstorsjo/fdk-aac/issues/167 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1977614 Title: [MIR] fdk-aac-free To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fdk-aac-free/+bug/1977614/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 2052809] Re: [MIR] bpftrace
I reviewed bpftrace 0.20.1 as checked into noble. This shouldn't be considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability. > bpftrace is a high-level tracing language for Linux enhanced Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) available in recent Linux kernels (4.x). bpftrace uses LLVM as a backend to compile scripts to BPF-bytecode and makes use of BCC for interacting with the Linux BPF system, as well as existing Linux tracing capabilities: kernel dynamic tracing (kprobes), user-level dynamic tracing (uprobes), and tracepoints. [Bug 2015420] Re: motd: can't disable esm-related messages
To verify there are no regressions in messages, and that the new option in apt-check works as intended, I have executed the unit test suite for all releases, as it covers the message generation for an exhaustive amount of cases. On Xenial and Bionic I had to add the data/ folder to the pythonpath, so it could import apt_check and run the unit tests. On those releases, one unit test is failed. But the test also fails for the version without the patch that fixes this bug, so the behavior is kept. This error probably happens because the test misses a mock to is_esm, which is returning True for Xenial and Bionic. This is a bug. New tests pass for both releases. [Bug 2057636] Re: [FFe] Symfony 6
Hey Athos, thanks for raising this up. Honestly, I hate the fact we have to do it after FF but I guess it is how it is. I know symfony can be annoying and so on but I guess, the only way is to JFDI. :) After assessing, I think the benefit to cost ratio is positive and I feel it's worth doing this now. Worst case, we can roll back the version if we think we're having too much difficulty getting things migrated. So I think let's do this! Please consider this as an FFe approval. ** Description changed: Feature Freeze Exception Request -- There are only 2 packages in Ubuntu main that use freerdp2: remmina and gnome-remote-desktop. It is requested to switch both to freerdp3. Therefore only one version of freerdp will be in main. freerdp2 will be demoted to universe since many universe packages use it and are not prepared to switch to freerdp3. - This also requests updating gdm and gnome-control-center to fully enable - the features of gnome-remote-desktop 46. + This also requests updating gnome-control-center to fully enable the + features of gnome-remote-desktop 46. Impact -- A headline feature of GNOME 46 is support as a Remote Desktop server without requiring someone to already be logged in locally ("headless" mode). This feature requires gnome-remote-desktop 46. gnome-remote-desktop 46 requires freerdp3. Impact if this does not happen -- - We would need to patch gnome-control-center to use the older Remote Desktop panel - - We would need to keep using gnome-remote-desktop 45 instead of 46. The gnome-remote-desktop upstream maintainers would be unhappy with this decision. gnome-remote-desktop 45 was tested against Mutter 45. Changes in Mutter 46 may require changes in gnome-remote-desktop for things to work well although a simple test showed that basic remote desktop seems to work ok with the mismatch. + - We would need to keep using gnome-remote-desktop 45 instead of 46. (See comment #1 from upstream developer.) Why this did not land sooner --- It required the packaging of a new source package freerdp3. And we had to do this sooner than Debian. Sorry too many things to do before Feature Freeze and this did not make it. Affected Packages - - gnome-remote-desktop 45 -> 46 - - gdm3 45 -> 46 (to support headless mode) - gnome-control-center (to update the Remote Desktop settings page) - - remmina 1.4.34 -> 1.4.35 and swap build-depends. Remmina 1.4.34 did not work with freerdp 3.3 in my testing - gnome-connections (build-dependency swap): Not required by other changes and not in Main but makes sense to switch it also Affected Flavors Only Ubuntu Desktop and Edubuntu ships gdm3, gnome-control-center, gnome-remote-desktop. (Cinnamon 23.04 and daily 23.10 also ships gnome-control-center but this appears to be a bug since they ship cinnamon-control-center and is likely already fixed in noble-proposed) Remmina is included in Ubuntu Desktop, Cinnamon, Kylin, and Unity. gnome-connections has no reverse dependencies or recommends. Upstream Changes https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-remote-desktop/-/blob/46.rc/NEWS https://gitlab.com/Remmina/Remmina/-/blob/rel/v1.4.35/CHANGELOG.md - - https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/blob/46.rc/NEWS gnome-control-center 46~beta was already in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS before Feature Freeze. It will be updated to 46.0. The relevant part here is whether we use the 46~beta version of the Remote Desktop page or the 46.0 version. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/blob/46.rc/NEWS Build Logs -- I have backported GNOME Shell 46 RC and GTK4 4.13 to the Ubuntu Desktop PPA. The PPA currently has noble-proposed disabled so that it is easily possible to try this set of packages without dealing with the incomplete 32-bit time transition in noble-proposed. In addition, the PPA has the affected packages from this FFe. https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages Testing Done --- 1. The screen is also connected with Displayport as supposed to be for FreeSync.
