[Bug 1970069] Re: Annoying boot messages interfering with splash screen

2024-03-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That change is in plymouth, but hooks/framebuffer is in initramfs-tools.
If you're suggesting moving the code from plymouth into initramfs-tools
then I kind of understand, but it's not directly related to fixing this
bug.

[Bug 1970069] Re: Annoying boot messages interfering with splash screen

2024-03-18 Thread Daniel van Vugt
If you are suggesting moving the logic from plymouth into initramfs-
tools then please start by duplicating the code you'd like moved into
initramfs-tools. That would be efficient since you have commit access to
initramfs-tools, and would mean I only have to deal with plymouth here.

Have you looked at the FTBFS symbols errors in your ppa armhf build?

They look (unsurprisingly) similar to the qt6-webengine ones which have
now been fixed.

[Bug 2056143] Re: block/loop: No longer allows to create partitions

2024-03-18 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Performing verification for Jammy.

I started a fresh VM, with 5.15.0-101-generic from updates. I ran the
following reproducer:

$ fallocate -l 1G /tmp/blob
$ LOOPDEV=$(sudo losetup --find --show /tmp/blob)
$ sudo /usr/sbin/parted -s -m -a optimal $LOOPDEV -- unit KiB mklabel gpt
mkpart primary 0% 100%
Error: Partition(s) 1 on /dev/loop4 have been written, but we have been unable
to inform the kernel of the change, probably because it/they are in use. As a
result, the old partition(s) will remain in use. You should reboot now before
making further changes.

I then enabled -proposed, and installed 5.15.0-102-generic:

$ uname -rv
5.15.0-102-generic #112-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 5 16:50:32 UTC 2024

Running the reproducer:

$ fallocate -l 1G /tmp/blob
$ LOOPDEV=$(sudo losetup --find --show /tmp/blob)
$ sudo /usr/sbin/parted -s -m -a optimal $LOOPDEV -- unit KiB mklabel gpt
mkpart primary 0% 100%

$ losetup -a
/dev/loop4: []: (/tmp/blob)
$ ll /dev
...
brw-rw 1 root disk 7, 4 Mar 19 03:45 loop4
brw-rw 1 root disk259, 0 Mar 19 03:45 loop4p1
...

Things are now working as intended. The kernel in -proposed solves the
issue. Happy to mark verified for Jammy.

[Bug 2058315] [NEW] Mute/mic-mute LEDs not functioning on a HP platform

2024-03-18 Thread Leo Lin
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
LEDs on both mute and mic-mute key are not working on a HP platform.

[Fix]
The quirk in the commit b2d6a1fd0e3e513f5ebfc152d6fedae093df8e21 (ALSA:
hda/realtek: Add quirks for HP G11 Laptops using CS35L56) in linux-next can
make it work.

[Test]
1. Install the v2023.12.1 of upstream sof-bin
(https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin/releases/tag/v2023.12.1)
2. Then after the quirk is applied, both the mute and mic-mute LEDs on the keys
should toggle accordingly on key presses.

[Where problems could occur]
If the subsystem ID is somehow reused by vendor for newer hardware, the newer
hardware may not be functioning correctly. Also it requires correct tplg files
to work.

[Bug 2058310] [NEW] Dummy output with Celeron Silver audio

2024-03-18 Thread Chris Hall
Public bug reported:

Built in speakers have alsa driver as sof-audio-pci-intel-apl, but there
is no sound. I believe the CPU sound unit is essx-8336. Many people have
reported similar problems, with the system sound being "dummy output".
My bluetooth ear buds do work. Endeavour-OS and Fedora 39 live images do
work with this machine, as does the Win 11 dual boot, so the hardware
works. Will this problem be fixed in version 24.04?

[Bug 2057484] Re: kernel worker event freezes during traffic on iwlwifi

2024-03-18 Thread Marcelo Vanzin
I'm not sure the problem I'm having is exactly the same, but I also
can't get any kernel after 6.5.0-21 to properly boot up on my laptop
with an Intel wifi card.

I'm attaching the portion of kern.log where a bunch of kernel worker
tasks are reported as timed out; that happened, IIRC, after I tried to
shut down the system by hitting the power button. The system wasn't
really usable since most processes weren't able to start, so I couldn't
really do a lot of investigation. Even trying to do "sudo blah" or just
"ifconfig" would hang indefinitely.

If it's any help, I have a bunch of options set for the Intel wifi driver:
options iwlwifi power_save=0
options iwlmvm power_scheme=1
options iwldvm power_scheme=1
options lwlwifi bt_coex_active=enable

[Bug 1828107] Re: gvfs can't list shares from smb servers that disabled SMB1

2024-03-18 Thread smiki
I can confirm that on latest LTS (22.04.4) this is still present.
This is a major usability issue. I remember having this problem for many year
now.

Workaround is clear(killing gvfsd-smb-browse). Even a patch is released
that although not solving the root cause shows that the problem is gvfs
left in a bad state -- see post #45 (William Maddox (wmaddox3rd))

this issue us haunting me almost daily for 5years now. And is a core
userexperience functionality of any user to be able to see shares on a
local network.

Even though its a gvfs issue, ubuntu-desktop shold prioritize fixing
this since it affects such a core UX function.

[Bug 2058302] [NEW] lxd-agent-loader tmpfs too small for some LXD hosts

2024-03-18 Thread Simon Déziel
Public bug reported:

When the host uses a manually compiled LXD where binaries were not
stripped, the `lxd-agent` can be ~31MiB big. This binary is copied
inside the VM guest when the VM boots up. This copy operation can fail
as the tmpfs in the VM is mounted with `size=25MiB`.

This binary is then tentatively copied into any virtual machine instance
where that copy can fail because the tmpfs' size is set to 25MiB:

$ lxc launch ubuntu-minimal-daily:24.04 v1 --vm
Creating v1
Starting v1
$ lxc exec v1 -- mount | grep /run/lxd_agent
tmpfs on /run/lxd_agent type tmpfs
(rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,size=25600k,mode=700,inode64)

[Bug 2058303] [NEW] lxd-agent-loader might fail on selinux enabled VMs

2024-03-18 Thread Simon Déziel
Public bug reported:

This was originally reported at https://github.com/lxc/incus/issues/484
which is recopied here (s/incus/lxd/):

On Red Hat based VMs using SELinux, we seem to be occasionally hitting
lxd-agent startup issues due to systemd not being able to execute the
agent binary.

This is because of SELinux labeling issues and typically only kicks-in
after a full re-label.

The particular issue with the agent can be fixed by setting the
appropriate label on the agent binary as part of its creation.

[Bug 2012763] Re: qemu-system-amd64 max cpus is too low for latest processors

2024-03-18 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

- QEMU users on Ubuntu Jammy who try to spawn a VM with more than 288
- vCPUs will not be able to do so, because the machine types available
+ QEMU users on Ubuntu Jammy/Mantic who try to spawn a VM with more than
+ 288 vCPUs will not be able to do so, because the machine types available
don't support such scenario. The following error will happen:

qemu-system-x86_64: Invalid SMP CPUs 300. The max CPUs supported by
  machine 'pc-q35-jammy' is 288

  [ Test Plan ]

Ideally, the test should be performed in a machine with more than 288
physical CPUs available. However, due to the difficulty in finding such
systems, it is possible to emulate the usage of more than 288 vCPUs.

- On a Jammy machine, you can do:
+ On a Jammy/Mantic machine, making sure to adjust the machine type
+ accordingly, you can do:

  $ sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -M pc-q35-jammy,accel=kvm,kernel-irqchip=split
  -device intel-iommu,intremap=on -smp cpus=300,maxcpus=300 -enable-kvm
-net none -m 4096M -nographic -kernel /boot/vmlinuz -initrd
  /boot/initrd.img -chardev stdio,mux=on,id=char0 -mon
  chardev=char0,mode=readline -serial chardev:char0 -append
  "console=ttyS0"

You will notice that the command will fail, as expected.

- The proposed fix is to create a new machine type on Jammy, in order to
- minimize the possibility of regressions in deployments using the
- existing machine types. This new type is named pc-{q35,i440fx}-jammy-
- maxcpus. When doing the test, make sure to provide this new machine
- type (as part of the "-M" argument).
+ The proposed fix is to create a new machine type on Jammy/Mantic, in
+ order to minimize the possibility of regressions in deployments using
+ the existing machine types. This new type is named
+ pc-{q35,i440fx}-{jammy,mantic}-maxcpus. When doing the test, make sure
+ to provide this new machine type (as part of the "-M" argument).

[ Where problems could occur ]

As explained above, a new machine type was created in order to minimize
the possibility of regressions. As such, the existing
- "pc-{q35,i440fx}-jammy" machine types should continue to work as before,
- without any change.
+ "pc-{q35,i440fx}-{jammy,mantic}" machine types should continue to work
+ as before, without any change.

  [ Original Description ]

During testing of an AMD Genoa CPU, it was discovered that qemu-system-
  amd64 doesn't support enough cpus.

The specific error the tester received was:

qemu-system-x86_64: Invalid SMP CPUs 384. The max supported by machine
  'pc-q35-7.1' is 288

Looking at the sournce that seems to be an easy fix at first glance:

  https://github.com/qemu/qemu/blob/master/hw/i386/pc_q35.c
  372machine_class_allow_dynamic_sysbus_dev(m, TYPE_VMBUS_BRIDGE);
  373m->max_cpus = 288;

If that is the case then why does it work on the newer version that is

I can't find any tags, branching, release notes that would make it easy

find which releases were cut at a certain commit id.

[Bug 2058286] Re: Requesting SRU for Octavia 10.1.1

2024-03-18 Thread Adam Vest
** Description changed:

  Howdy!

- I have a customer in case 00381750 requesting a time frame for when
- Octavia 10.1.1 can be SRUed, as they mentioned they are interested in
- some fixes included in that version for issues they are experiencing.
- I'm having trouble finding when that version was actually released[1],
- but looking at the last-modify times on the source files, I'd
- guesstimate on or around 08 Feb 2024.
+ This is just a generic request for Octavia 10.1.1 to be SRUed, as there
+ are a number of useful fixes that it would be nice to see pulled in. I'm
+ having trouble finding when that version was actually released[1], but
+ looking at the last-modify times on the source files, I'd guesstimate on
+ or around 08 Feb 2024.

  Thanks!

2024-03-18 Thread Sudip Mukherjee
Thanks for reporting the bug.
The failure are because your Focal system has:

libignition-common3
libignition-msgs5
libignition-fuel-tools4

I tried to reproduce the issue and I could not find any such package in Focal.
The packages which are available in Focal are:
libignition-fuel-tools1-1
libignition-msgs
libignition-common

Can you please check how have you installed these packages in Focal..
I am marking this bug as Incomplete, please mark it as New when you reply with
the information.

[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-03-18 Thread John Johansen
@ajg-charlbury: no apparmor beta3 has not landed in proposed yet, we are
working on the upload now. firefox separately have added a bug fix that
will detect when the user namespace/capabilities are denied and fallback
without crashing but it disables the full sandbox.

the apparmor-beta3 fix should enable firefox to function with the full
sandbox.

[Bug 2058285] [NEW] update-manager crashes when started

2024-03-18 Thread Giacomo Massa
Public bug reported:

When started either via launcher or cli update-manager downloads
informations from sources and crashes when the operation is terminated,
just before showing the package list.

This happens since the update from update-manager version 1:22.04.18 to
1:22.04.19, done yesterday.

Updates via apt or apt-get cli commands work regularly.

Description:Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
Release:22.04

Package: update-manager 1:22.04.19

Expected behaviour: after sources' interrogation, the software should
either tell no updates are available or show pending updates.

Observed behaviour: the software checks for updates then crashes before
showing any results.

[Bug 2012763] Re: qemu-system-amd64 max cpus is too low for latest processors

2024-03-18 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
+ QEMU users on Ubuntu Jammy who try to spawn a VM with more than 288
+ vCPUs will not be able to do so, because the machine types available
+ don't support such scenario. The following error will happen:
+
+ qemu-system-x86_64: Invalid SMP CPUs 300. The max CPUs supported by
+ machine 'pc-q35-jammy' is 288
+
+ [ Test Plan ]
+
+ Ideally, the test should be performed in a machine with more than 288
+ physical CPUs available. However, due to the difficulty in finding such
+ systems, it is possible to emulate the usage of more than 288 vCPUs.
+
+ On a Jammy machine, you can do:
+
+ $ sudo qemu-system-x86_64 -M pc-q35-jammy,accel=kvm,kernel-irqchip=split
+ -device intel-iommu,intremap=on -smp cpus=300,maxcpus=300 -enable-kvm
+ -net none -m 4096M -nographic -kernel /boot/vmlinuz -initrd
+ /boot/initrd.img -chardev stdio,mux=on,id=char0 -mon
+ chardev=char0,mode=readline -serial chardev:char0 -append
+ "console=ttyS0"
+
+ You will notice that the command will fail, as expected.
+
+ The proposed fix is to create a new machine type on Jammy, in order to
+ minimize the possibility of regressions in deployments using the
+ existing machine types. This new type is named pc-{q35,i440fx}-jammy-
+ maxcpus. When doing the test, make sure to provide this new machine
+ type (as part of the "-M" argument).
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ As explained above, a new machine type was created in order to minimize
+ the possibility of regressions. As such, the existing
+ "pc-{q35,i440fx}-jammy" machine types should continue to work as before,
+ without any change.
+
+ [ Original Description ]
+
During testing of an AMD Genoa CPU, it was discovered that qemu-system-
  amd64 doesn't support enough cpus.

The specific error the tester received was:

qemu-system-x86_64: Invalid SMP CPUs 384. The max supported by machine
  'pc-q35-7.1' is 288

Looking at the sournce that seems to be an easy fix at first glance:

  https://github.com/qemu/qemu/blob/master/hw/i386/pc_q35.c
  372machine_class_allow_dynamic_sysbus_dev(m, TYPE_VMBUS_BRIDGE);
  373m->max_cpus = 288;

[Bug 2057937] Re: apt-news.service reporting errors after ubuntu-pro-client install

2024-03-18 Thread Andreas Hasenack
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

  src:ubuntu-advantage-tools version 31 introduced[1] an apparmor profile
to the apt-news service. It's known that some ubuntu systems do not have
apparmor enabled, and this was considered. The systemd.exec(5) manpage
states that the AppArmorProfile setting has no effect if apparmor is
disabled[2]. This was tested and verified.

Turns out, however, that apparmor can be enabled on a system, but
without the apparmor package installed. When this package is not
installed, no profiles are loaded. Crucially, the ubuntu_pro_apt_news
profile, used by apt-news.service, is not loaded.

This situation is different than "apparmor is disabled", and systemd
will try to launch apt-news confined by ubuntu_pro_apt_news. But since
that profile is not loaded into the kernel, the service will fail.

apt-news.service is called as an apt update hook, but its failure does
not fail apt, since it's guarded[3] by "|| true", i.e., failures in the
hook are ignored. The only impact is that apt news won't be fetched.

  [ Test Plan ]

To reproduce the problem, launch an ubuntu lxd container, or a VM, and:

  # install ubuntu-advantage-tools 31 or later. It's in updates right now,
so just make sure the system is updated:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install ubuntu-advantage-tools -y

  sudo reboot

  # start apt-news.service, and verify it fails:

Job for apt-news.service failed because the control process exited with error
code.
See "systemctl status apt-news.service" and "journalctl -xeu
apt-news.service" for details.

[ Where problems could occur ]

-  * Think about what the upload changes in the software. Imagine the change is
-    wrong or breaks something else: how would this show up?
+ The fix is essentially ignoring errors when loading the specified
+ apparmor profile, leaving the service unconfined in the case of an error
+ like this, which is exactly how it was prior to the version 31 update.
+ If the profile is loaded in the kernel, it will be applied as designed.

-  * It is assumed that any SRU candidate patch is well-tested before
-    upload and has a low overall risk of regression, but it's important
-    to make the effort to think about what ''could'' happen in the
-    event of a regression.
-
-  * This must '''never''' be "None" or "Low", or entirely an argument as to why
-    your upload is low risk.
-
-  * This both shows the SRU team that the risks have been considered,
-    and provides guidance to testers in regression-testing the SRU.
+ Since we are now ignoring errors, if the profile has some syntax error,
+ we would be running apt-news with the previously loaded profile, or, in
+ the case of a reboot, unconfined, without a visible error other than
+ logs. This could only happen if the user made manual changes to the
+ profile, because the u-a-t package runs a syntax check on the profile at
+ package build time.

[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-03-18 Thread ajgreeny
I have just tried running firefox from the firefox-nightly download and all
runs well using that version
125.0a1 (2024-03-17) (64-bit).

I assume the beta3 you speak of is the new version of apparmor; is that
the same version as the current apparmor-proposed version?

[Bug 2056153] Re: Removing the systemd-resolved package breaks DNSSEC validation

2024-03-18 Thread Nick Rosbrook
Yeah, this looks like a bug. The systemd-resolved.postrm is copying
/run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf, rather then
copying /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf (which is where
/etc/resolv.conf is symlinked to prior to removal).

[Bug 2056153] Re: Removing the systemd-resolved package breaks DNSSEC validation

2024-03-18 Thread Nick Rosbrook
Or, actually, not exactly. We don't want the stub-resolv.conf since
systemd-resolved is leaving, but we probably do want the options.

[Bug 2057937] Re: apt-news.service reporting errors after ubuntu-pro-client install

2024-03-18 Thread Andreas Hasenack
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

- * An explanation of the effects of the bug on users and
+ src:ubuntu-advantage-tools version 31 introduced[1] an apparmor profile
+ to the apt-news service. It's known that some ubuntu systems do not have
+ apparmor enabled, and this was considered. The systemd.exec(5) manpage
+ states that the AppArmorProfile setting has no effect if apparmor is
+ disabled[2]. This was tested and verified.

- * justification for backporting the fix to the stable release.
+ Turns out, however, that apparmor can be enabled on a system, but
+ without the apparmor package installed. When this package is not
+ installed, no profiles are loaded. Crucially, this also means that the
+ ubuntu_pro_apt_news profile, used by apt-news.service, is also not
+ loaded.

- * In addition, it is helpful, but not required, to include an
-explanation of how the upload fixes this bug.
+ This situation is different than "apparmor is disabled", and systemd
+ will try to launch apt-news confined by ubuntu_pro_apt_news. But since
+ that profile is not loaded into the kernel, the service will fail.
+
+ apt-news.service is called as an apt update hook, but its failure does not
fail apt, since it's guarded[3] by "|| true", i.e., failures in the hook are
ignored.
+ The only impact is that apt news won't be fetched.

[Bug 2058261] Re: cups-browsed crashed with SIGSEGV in httpAddrFamily()

What does it mean that crash report can't be processed? Are there any
logs of this processing? I did not do anything special, system reported
a crash and I hit "send". There is no coredump attached, is it
considered "invalid"?

[Bug 2058278] Re: [Backport] libvirt-daemon-system won't install on Focal

2024-03-18 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
Thanks, Guilherme.

I found:

https://salsa.debian.org/utopia-
team/polkit/-/commit/81c21cdadbe0a98ca016738b8c2cc7d4f225f067

and then:

https://salsa.debian.org/libvirt-
team/libvirt/-/commit/b9b2923abfae8ec80507bc267767db4b51fb4021

which explain why we're depending on polkitd. So yeah, I believe
Guilherme's suggestion might be enough to fix this issue on Focal.

[Bug 2054977] Re: systemd-networkd fails to renew DHCP v4 lease when renew attempt times out

2024-03-18 Thread Nick Rosbrook
I think this would be better suited as an upstream issue, because AFAICT
this case is still not handled in the latest version. If you do open an
upstream bug (https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues), they will want
to see this reproduced on at least systemd v254.

Please comment back here if you open a bug upstream.
