[Bug 2054510] Re: Incomplete screen redraws in virtual machines running Xorg

2024-03-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That test passed in the actual build:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/719148617/buildlog_ubuntu-jammy-armhf.mutter_42.9-0ubuntu7_BUILDING.txt.gz

It is known to be a flaky test (moreso on Arm) and its failure is not related
to the code changes here.

2024-03-21 Thread Mario Limonciello
For some unknown reason this only seems to be reported on some people's
Framework 13 AMD laptops.

FYI - there are two workarounds for those currently encountering this
issue.

* On the kernel command line: amdgpu.sg_display=0
* Change the BIOS settings from Auto to UMA_Game_Optimized.

[Bug 2058557] Re: Kernel panic during checkbox stress_ng_test on Grace running noble 6.8 (arm64+largemem) kernel

2024-03-21 Thread Mitchell Augustin
Upon further investigation, the device mapper observation does not seem
to be a hard line, as I was able to observe panics when stressing both
dm-0 and nvme0n1 under different circumstances.

At the moment, it also seems like the specific part of stress_ng_test
that is the culprit is the "stress-ng aiol stressor". When running only
the "aiol" stressor in isolation on linux-image-6.8.0-11-generic-64k,
the panic reliably happens in under 5 minutes.

Currently investigating to see if any other stress_ng tests cause the
same issue on this kernel version, or if it is only aiol.

[Bug 2056767] Re: DRAFT [FFe] gnome-software package split

2024-03-21 Thread Jeremy Bícha
** Description changed:

As requested by the Ubuntu Release Team, I am providing early notice of
- a Feature Freeze Exception I intend to request soon (later this week
- hopefully) to split the gnome-software package into separate binary
- plugins. This will allow users and flavors to specifically opt into the
- parts of the GNOME Software experience they want. For instance, someone
- may want to use only the Flatpak part or only the apt/.deb part.
+ a Feature Freeze Exception I intend to request soon (approximately March
+ 27)

  What is Needed Now
  -
- Finish the Salsa merge request to get some review from others.
- Evaluate different use case workflows and how well the changes help and any
issues that may result
+ Waiting a few days for review of
https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/gnome-software/-/merge_requests/16

  Impact
  --
+ I request permission to land a change I am making in Debian to split
gnome-software's .deb support into a separate package,
gnome-software-plugin-deb, to match the existing -snap and -flatpak packages.
This will allow users and flavors to specifically opt into the parts of the
GNOME Software experience they want. For instance, someone may want to use only
the Flatpak part because they use the Snap Store to manage .debs and Snaps. Or
maybe they want a different combination.
+
+ This has been requested by multiple users on Ubuntu Discourse and at
+ least one Launchpad bug and one Debian bug.

  Potential Problems
  ---
+ For new installs, gnome-software has Depends: gnome-software-plugin-deb |
gnome-software-plugin. Where gnome-software-plugin is a virtual package
provided by each plugin so a user would get gnome-software-plugin-deb installed
unless they specifically chose a different plugin or the metapackage they
installed did.

+ However, I think this won't work right for upgrades. I am going to
+ investigate whether I can add a ubuntu-release-upgrader quirk to install
+ gnome-software-plugin-deb for people who already have gnome-software
+ installed. Maybe I need to treat gnome-software like a metapackage so I
+ can use PostUpgradeInstall
+
+ Otherwise, people are likely to lose support for installing .debs with
+ GNOME Software and it is not obvious why.

  Other Related Changes
  -
- fwupd
+ I am dropping the fwupd plugin. Ubuntu Desktop includes the firmware-updater
snap. Several Ubuntu desktop flavors also include it. For people who don't want
snaps, there is also the gnome-firmware app packaged as a .deb.

+ Because Ubuntu already has update-manager to handle apt update
+ notifications, I am also dropping the autostart file to reduce
+ background RAM use.
+
+ A few Ubuntu desktop flavors do not provide any firmware updater app at
+ all. Ubuntu Budgie developers thought a firmware updater app was too
+ technical for inclusion in the default Ubuntu 24.04 LTS install.

  Desktop Flavors Affected

GNOME Software is currently included in the default install for only
  Ubuntu Cinnamon

[Bug 2058693] Re: NetworkManager crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message_expr()

2024-03-21 Thread Brian Murray
I looked at the log files on the server which does the retracing of
these crashes and I did not find anything informative. If you still have
the .crash file available on your system (its located in /var/crash/) I
might be able to have a look at it. You may want to make the bug
private again if you do upload the core dump as it could contain
personal information.

[Bug 2058693] Re: NetworkManager crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message_expr()

2024-03-21 Thread Roman
All reports from my machine are getting this "core dump is invalid"
messages, why? It is frustrating when you try to properly report bugs
just to get them automatically closed as invalid.

Also seems that this robot automatically removes dumps so you can't even
see them afterwards?

I tried to contact Brian via email without respond, let's try ping him
here somehow - not sure how this is done properly.

[Bug 2008650] Re: missing symbol in modules prevent start of Xserver

2024-03-21 Thread sh
yes, the problem still exists and there're no special cmdlines, just the
systemd-standard-start-procedures.

just tried it on a fresh installation

and there's no reason, why the problem should have gone, because the
files of the installed xorgxrdp-packages are still the same out of 2022.

all packages are up to date

but meanwhile I had a workaround found for this problem by fixing the
elf-binaries manually (which shows, that the modules above are badly
linked):

# install pkg 'patchelf' and execute following on shell:
patchelf --add-needed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libxorgxrdp.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/xrdpkeyb_drv.so
patchelf --add-needed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libxorgxrdp.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/xrdpmouse_drv.so
patchelf --add-needed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglamoregl.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/libxorgxrdp.so

I don't know, why this isn't needed on your system (maybe someone has done it?)

[Bug 2058557] Re: Kernel panic during checkbox stress_ng_test on Grace running noble 6.8 (arm64+largemem) kernel

2024-03-21 Thread Mitchell Augustin
I have observed that this panic does not seem to happen when stressing
non-device-mapper devices (ex: it panics when running /usr/lib/checkbox-
provider-base/bin/stress_ng_test.py disk --device dm-0 --base-time 240,
but completes successfully when running /usr/lib/checkbox-provider-
base/bin/stress_ng_test.py disk --device nvme0n1 --base-time 240).

I'm going to investigate this further to confirm.

[Bug 2056442] Re: Podman (crun) regression in Ubuntu 22.04: OCI runtime error: chmod `run/shm`: Operation not supported

2024-03-21 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Sorry, I just did not fix the first line when editing the test plan

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
podman containers using the default crun backend do not work anymore with the
6.5 HWE kernel in 22.04

  [Test plan]
- Needs to be finalized, but roughly:
-
  1. Boot jammy with 6.5 HWE kernel (e.g. install linux-virtual-hwe-22.04 in a
VM)
  2. `podman build -t systemd .` with the Dockerfile:
  FROM ubuntu:noble
RUN apt install -U systemd -y
  CMD ["/lib/systemd/systemd"]
  3. Run it `podman run --systemd always systemd` you should not get
Error: OCI runtime error: chmod `run/shm`: Operation not supported

Optimally submitter can do end-to-end-verification on their side.

  [Where problems could occur]
The patch ignores ENOTSUP for fchmodat() in one function, so at most we could
silently hide some other issues in fchmodat() inside that function, e.g.
AppArmor denials. But generally that is what you would want as a behavior for
ENOTSUP...

  [Original bug report]

The problem is very well described in https://github.com/actions/runner-
  images/issues/9425.

  ## COPY FROM LINK

I think there might be a regression in this release of the ubuntu-22.04
  image which breaks podman.[1]

The image updated the kernel from 6.2.y to 6.5.y, but podman/crun don't
  seem to be updated.

Trying to reproduce, it seems like I am only able to get this image
version 20240218.1.0 where the issue does not appear.

Tried to reproduce in this repo[3], but I'm not able to get this with
  image version 20240225.1.0.

Is this a known issue and version 20240225.1.0 is not in use anymore?

This blog post seems to suggest that the crun version is too old.[4]

[Bug 2051380] Re: Expired certificate used for tests causes failures

2024-03-21 Thread Lucas Kanashiro
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ This is causing a FTBFS, so rubyx.y cannot be rebuilt.
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ Build the package in the targeted releases. No test failure is expected.
+
+ [Where Problems could occur]
+
+ The test certificates were renewed, to be honest I fail to foresee any
+ issue with the proposed change. The only change is the removal of
+ '-text' from the openssl call, which does not ring any bell for me.
+
+ [Origin Description]
+
Ruby uses a x590 certificate for some of its tests. It expired at the
beginning of the year and this has been causing tests to fail.

  There is a fix upstream:

https://github.com/ruby/ruby/pull/9420/commits/844672256e8e843a7e3a52b7e3c9bb8ea4c328b4

[Bug 2049197] Re: ruby_xfree segmentation fault

2024-03-21 Thread Lucas Kanashiro
** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+
+ Users might face a segfault when using ruby_free.
+
+ [Test Plan]
+
+ # apt update && apt install -y ruby ruby-nokogiri
+ # cat > reproducer.rb <=22.04 that causes
segfault relatively rarely. Even though rare with repetitions running
small wrappers it will be seen quite a bit, up to dozens of times in a
  day.

There exists a patch upstream, could that be picked to Ubuntu repo(s)?

[Bug 1876597] Re: [SRU] package pure-ftpd-common 1.0.49-4 failed to install/upgrade: unable to open '/usr/share/doc/pure-ftpd-common/README.Authentication-Modules.gz.dpkg-new': No such file or directo

2024-03-21 Thread Sudip Mukherjee
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

pure-ftpd will fail to upgrade from Bionic to Focal. It will give an
  error as below:

  dpkg: error processing archive
/var/cache/apt/archives/pure-ftpd-common_1.0.49-4_all.deb (--unpack):
- unable to open
'/usr/share/doc/pure-ftpd-common/README.Authentication-Modules.gz.dpkg-new': No

+  Errors were encountered while processing:
+  /var/cache/apt/archives/pure-ftpd-common_1.0.49-4_all.deb
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

  [ Test Plan ]

  Complete test plan:
  1. Use a Bionic system
  2. Install pure-ftpd
- 3. Execute "do-release-upgrade" to upgrade the system to Focal
+ 3. Execute "do-release-upgrade" to upgrade the system to Focal.
+ 4. Upgrade the system to Jammy to confirm next upgrade is not broken.
+

A quick test plan: I have made a PPA with pure-ftpd from Bionic but rebuilt
for Focal.
  1. Use a Focal system.
  2. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sudipmuk/pure-ftpd
  3. sudo apt update
  4. sudo apt-get install pure-ftpd=1.0.46-1ubuntu18.04.1~ppa1
pure-ftpd-common=1.0.46-1ubuntu18.04.1~ppa1
  5. sudo apt-get upgrade

With the fixed package, pure-ftpd will now upgrade to the version in
  Focal.
+
+ Redo the quick testplan for pure-ftpd-mysql, pure-ftpd-ldap, pure-ftpd-
+ postgresql to confirm they do not have any regression. These binaries do
+ not have this original issue.
+

[ Where problems could occur ]

It does not change any part of the code, only change is in the d/rules
file which removes the symlink from /usr/share/doc/pure-ftpd* to pure-
ftpd-common and instead uses dpkg-maintscript-helper scripts to manage
the symlink. There should not be any regression in the software for this
  change.

  [ Other Info ]

This has been fixed in Debian by pure-ftpd/1.0.49-4.1 and so Jammy
  onwards is not affected.

[Bug 2058690] [NEW] aa-easyprof: allow mmap and link from easyprof generated profiles

2024-03-21 Thread Ratchanan Srirattanamet
Public bug reported:

Currently, an easyprof-generated profile will list the reads with `rk`
and the writes as `rwk`. With recent Qt, this breaks because newer Qt
versions use hard-linking of temporary files to perform atomic writes.
Also, `rk` doesn't allow mmap()'ing shared library for execution.

We at UBports are carrying a patch in Ubuntu Touch which changes the
read rules to `mrk` and write rules to `mrwkl`, and are upstreaming this
patch at [1]. When the MR is merged, I would like this patch to be
included in Ubuntu 24.04, so that Ubuntu Touch doesn't have to package
AppArmor separately from Ubuntu.

If we agree that we want this patch, I can provide an MR on Salsa.

[Bug 2003851] Re: occasional hanging 'apt-get update' from daily cronjob since Jammy 22.04

2024-03-21 Thread Adam Saponara
Hello, also affected by this.

I'm able to reproduce the bug using Walter's mock server. I suspect it
may be related to the retry code that kicks in when a transient error is
encountered (like a 503). Retries are enabled by default since apt
2.3.2, which seems to fit the regression window people have mentioned
here.

Frustratingly, I can't reproduce while step debugging, I'm guessing
because the bug is clock-dependent.

Setting either `Acquire::Retries::Delay=false` or `Acquire::Retries=0`
seems to mitigate it. I'm curious if that works for others as well. I'll
be testing this in prod soon and will report back.

In the mean time I'll keep trying to find the actual bug.

2024-03-21 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Thank you for the extra verification.

I will also note that ovn on mantic is not available on the armhf
architecture, including the release pocket. I.e., mantic was released
without armhf binary builds of src:ovn, so this update is not
introducing a regression in that regard.

2024-03-21 Thread Brian Wilson
This system was a rsync clone of a baremetal 22.04 system with the
intention of being the drive I test the 24.04 upgrade on before doing
it, so I still have the source system on 22.04 if there is something you
want me to investigate on the source. I suppose the rsync command may
not be syncing correctly or I'm using the wrong flags.

The rsync was done

rsync -qaxH --delete --ignore-errors / /mnt/backup
rsync -qaxH --delete --ignore-errors /boot/efi /mnt/backup/boot

sed -i "s/$SourceRootUUID/$TargetRootUUID/g" /mnt/backup/etc/fstab

sed -i "s/$SourceEFIUUID/$TargetEFIUUID/g" /mnt/backup/etc/fstab
sed -i "s/$SourceEFIUUID/$TargetEFIUUID/g" /mnt/backup/boot/grub/grub.cfg
sed -i "s/$SourceRootUUID/$TargetRootUUID/g"
/mnt/backup/boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/grub.cfg
chroot /mnt/backup grub-install /dev/$DEV
chroot /mnt/backup /usr/sbin/update-grub

The clone is booted on another baremetal intel 700p.

I've done nothing to specifically remove /usr-merged.

[Bug 2058687] Re: [SRU] libreoffice 7.6.6 for mantic

2024-03-21 Thread Rico Tzschichholz
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * LibreOffice 7.6.6 is in its sixth bugfix release of the 7.6 line:
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/7.6#7.6.6_release

   * Version 7.6.5 is currently released in mantic. For a list of fixed bugs
compared to 7.6.5 see the list of bugs fixed in the release candidates of 7.6.6
(that's a total of ? bugs):
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.6.6/RC1#List_of_fixed_bugs
   https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.6.6/RC2#List_of_fixed_bugs
+ https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.6.6/RC3#List_of_fixed_bugs

-  7.6.6 RC2 is identical to the 7.6.6 release
+  7.6.6 RC3 is identical to the 7.6.6 release

   * Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream, it is preferable to SRU a
minor release rather than cherry-pick selected bug fixes.

  [Testing]

   * Upstream testing. Bugs fixed upstream typically include
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
(both in an automated manner and manually).

    * A recent set of upstream's automated jenkins testing can be found here:
  https://ci.libreoffice.org/job/gerrit_76/1898/

    * More information about the upstream QA testing can be found here:

  * Regression tests
    https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Regression_Tests
  * Feature tests
    https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Feature_Tests

   * Launchpad testing. The libreoffice packages include autopkgtests that were
run and verified as passing.

  * [amd64] ...
  * [arm64] ...
  * [armhf] ...
  * [ppc64el] ...
  * [riscv64] not available
  * [s390x] ...
   * General smoke testing of all the applications in the office suite were
carried out by going through the manual testplan as documented by:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/libreoffice

  [Regression Potential]

   * A minor release with a total of ? bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bugfix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
  features were removed.

   * A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as described
above should provide reasonable confidence that no regressions sneaked
  in.

[Bug 2056762] Re: ThreadSanitizer: unexpected memory mapping with 6.5.0-25.25~22.04.1

2024-03-21 Thread Dimitry Andric
https://github.com/google/sanitizers/issues/1716#issuecomment-2010399341

Summarizing: newer ThreadSanitizer has been updated to be able to work
with vm.mmap_rnd_bits = 30, but not higher than that. For other cases,
it will now re-execute the binary with ASLR disabled, if possible.

For most people the quick workaround of setting vm.mmap_rnd_bits to 28
might work, but of course you won't get the benefits intended with
#1983357 either.

So at some point, it would be nice to have the upstream ThreadSanitizer
fixes backported.

[Bug 2055776] Re: After updating ubuntu, the network to which the subnet address is assigned does not become active in KVM.

2024-03-21 Thread Tim Chevalier
I found this bug report after experiencing the same problem. The error
message I got was exactly the same as the one in comment #2. The fix
suggested by Kazuhiro in comment #9 fixed the problem.

I think that since this bug affects more than one person, it's not
merely a problem with one person's local environment. I didn't have
occasion to use KVM between 2024-02-27 and today, but it was working for
me before then and I didn't manually change anything in my environment.
I don't know enough about Ubuntu networking to say whether it's a bug in
dnsmasq or another component, but surely a package upgrade shouldn't
break something like this.

[Bug 2058661] Re: rocr-runtime 5.7.1-2 fails to build on armhf

2024-03-21 Thread Cory Bloor
I've pushed the change to salsa, so future versions of rocr-runtime will
be restricted to 64-bit architectures [1]. However, I'm not sure it's
worth uploading a new version of the package just for that. I'll wait
and see for a couple weeks if there are any more bugs reported before
making another upload and sync request.

[Bug 2058687] [NEW] [SRU] libreoffice 7.6.6 for mantic

2024-03-21 Thread Rico Tzschichholz
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * LibreOffice 7.6.6 is in its sixth bugfix release of the 7.6 line:
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/7.6#7.6.6_release

 * Version 7.6.5 is currently released in mantic. For a list of fixed bugs
compared to 7.6.5 see the list of bugs fixed in the release candidates of 7.6.6
(that's a total of ? bugs):
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.6.6/RC1#List_of_fixed_bugs
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.6.6/RC2#List_of_fixed_bugs

7.6.6 RC2 is identical to the 7.6.6 release

 * Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream, it is preferable to SRU a
minor release rather than cherry-pick selected bug fixes.

[Testing]

 * Upstream testing. Bugs fixed upstream typically include
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
(both in an automated manner and manually).

  * A recent set of upstream's automated jenkins testing can be found here:
https://ci.libreoffice.org/job/gerrit_76/1898/

  * More information about the upstream QA testing can be found here:
* Automated tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Automated_Tests
* Automated UI tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/UITests
* Regression tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Regression_Tests
* Feature tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Feature_Tests

 * Launchpad testing. The libreoffice packages include autopkgtests that were
run and verified as passing.
Tested build can be found at
https://launchpad.net/~ricotz/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+sourcepub/15867518/+listing-archive-extra
* [amd64] ...
* [arm64] ...
* [armhf] ...
* [ppc64el] ...
* [riscv64] not available
* [s390x] ...
 * General smoke testing of all the applications in the office suite were
carried out by going through the manual testplan as documented by:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/libreoffice

[Regression Potential]

 * A minor release with a total of ? bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bugfix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
features were removed.

 * A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as described
above should provide reasonable confidence that no regressions sneaked
in.

2024-03-21 Thread Helmut Grohne
Thank you. Quite clearly, that system is not /usr-merged, but should be.
Not being /usr-merged is unsupported at this time. The question arises
how you got there. Can you explain what kind of system that is? Is it a
regular installation, a container, a chroot or something else? Was it
created recently or upgraded since a long time? Do you happen to know
whether debootstrap, cdebootstrap, mmdebstrap or something else was used
to construct it?

[Bug 2058661] Re: rocr-runtime 5.7.1-2 fails to build on armhf

2024-03-21 Thread Cory Bloor
Note that no version of rocr-runtime has ever built successfully for
armhf. rocr-runtime should probably be limited to amd64, arm64 and
ppc64el (as those are the only architectures that have driver support
from AMDGPU KFD).

I've been cautious about dropping architectures that successfully built
because I cannot test them to confirm that they don't actually work. I'm
not sure it's even physically possible to install an AMD GPU into an IBM
System z mainframe (s390x).

However, I suppose that I could easily add `Build-Depend: architecture-
is-64-bit` to d/control so that it doesn't attempt to build for armhf.

[Bug 2058594] Re: Sync rocr-runtime 5.7.1-2 (universe) from Debian unstable (main)

2024-03-21 Thread Cory Bloor
It's perhaps worth noting that every version of rocr-runtime has failed
to build on armhf. The failure was not introduced by this update.
