[Bug 2064096] Re: Services fail to start in noble deployed with TPM+FDE

2024-05-01 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Thanks for the great debug work so far already, I think it is "apparmor
or kernel" enough that we should add those packages and subscribe a few
folks we know dealing with those details - I'd start with jjohansen as
he'd be the best to map us to either knowledge or a known case.

[Bug 2064563] [NEW] Broken default installation of nix-bin and nix-setup-systemd

2024-05-01 Thread Prasanna Loganathar
Public bug reported:

# Context

- nix-bin can be setup in 2 ways.
  - One is to let .nix-defer user local directory handle both channels and
packages. This will get placed into `/home//.local/state/nix/`
  - Second, is to let it all be symlinked into
`nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/`. (This is handled by systemd-tmpfiles
under `nix-setup-systemd` pkg. But very likely default installations do not
enable system-tmpfiles for user, it'll likely be enabled globally, but user
needs to enable manually)

## Current setup

- nix-setup-systemd ends up setting symlinks for per-user into the user
directory here:
  - /usr/share/user-tmpfiles.d/nix-daemon.conf
- nix-setup-systemd also ends up setting up the NIX_PATH to per-user dir above
making the assumption that it was completed in this file:
  - `/usr/lib/environment.d/nix-daemon.conf`

Firstly, this will fail in default installations since there is unless
the user enabled the systemd tmpfiles per user with

```
systemctl --user --now enable systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service
```

These symlinks will never be created and it's not in any of the docs.
But after enabling, this sets up for the profile, but not for channels.
It should also include symlinks for channels. This results in a broken
installation, as `nix-env` will work after adding user channel as
described in the docs. However all attempts to do `nix-shell -p `
will error due to:

```
warning: Nix search path entry
'/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user//channels/nixpkgs' does not exist,
ignoring
warning: Nix search path entry '/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user//channels'
does not exist, ignoring
error:
   …
 at «none»:0: (source not available)
   … while calling the 'import' builtin
```

This is because there is no such symlink and NIX_PATH is set to the non-
existent path.

## Current contents of

```
  4   #Type PathMode UID  GID  Age Argument
  3   d %h/.nix-defexpr
  2   L %h/.nix-defexpr/channels_root ----
/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/root/channels
  1   d /nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/%u 0755
  5   L %h/.nix-profile ----
/nix/var/nix/profiles/per-user/%u/profile
  1   d /nix/var/nix/gcroots/per-user/%u 0755
```

## Solutions

### Solution 1

Simplest. Remove excess config.

- Remove the symlinks entirely. Move /usr/share/user-tmpfiles.d/nix-daemon.conf
to docs to remove depending on systemd-tmp files.
- Remove `NIX_PATH` in /usr/lib/environment.d/nix-daemon.conf. When NIX_PATH is
not set, nix handles the user profile automatically and works well. (unset
NIX_PATH in the shell can workaround this at the moment neatly)

### Solution 2

More nix data inside /nix store

- Add channels to the symlink in /usr/share/user-tmpfiles.d/nix-daemon.conf.
- Auto-enable `systemctl --user enable systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service`?

  SRU Justification

  Impact:
 The upstream process for stable tree updates is quite similar
 in scope to the Ubuntu SRU process, e.g., each patch has to
 demonstrably fix a bug, and each patch is vetted by upstream
 by originating either directly from a mainline/stable Linux tree or
 a minimally backported form of that patch. The following upstream
 stable patches should be included in the Ubuntu kernel:

[Bug 1958019]

2024-05-01 Thread dreamsyntax
After continued use of 6.8.7 and later 6.8.8, I can confirm using the
`./tas2781-2dev-on.sh 2` in my case as root regularly whenever audio goes out
works fine.

What needs to happen at the kernel level / in a patch to resolve this?

[Bug 2064370] Re: Blank screen after boot in raspberry pi 4

2024-05-01 Thread Andre Ruiz
Thank you for the explanation.

So that means that with different monitors I could potentially not need
this vc4.force_hotplug option, right? I will (as time permits) try
plugging this device in all my other monitors to compare, let's see how
it goes (this monitor specifically is a laptop LCD using a lcd
controller from ebay -- the others are all lg/samsung/dell ones, should
behave better).

[Bug 2064549] [NEW] pull-request: Fixes: b2b56a163230 ("gpio: tegra186: Check GPIO pin permission before access.")

2024-05-01 Thread Brad Figg
Public bug reported:

The controller has several register bits describing access control
information for a given GPIO pin. When SCR_SEC_[R|W]EN is unset, it
means we have full read/write access to all the registers for given GPIO
pin. When SCR_SEC[R|W]EN is set, it means we need to further check the
accompanying SCR_SEC_G1[R|W] bit to determine read/write access to all
the registers for given GPIO pin.

This check was previously declaring that a GPIO pin was accessible
only if either of the following conditions were met:

  - SCR_SEC_REN + SCR_SEC_WEN both set

or

  - SCR_SEC_REN + SCR_SEC_WEN both set and
SCR_SEC_G1R + SCR_SEC_G1W both set

Update the check to properly handle cases where only one of
SCR_SEC_REN or SCR_SEC_WEN is set.

[Bug 2063110] Re: rtorrent crashes on startup

Seconded. Doing an "apt source rtorrent", applying this patch, building
and installing fixes the issue for me.

Rakshasa hasn't done an official release since 2019, and this commit has
been sitting in trunk for over a year. It would be nice to see this
patch expedited. I can't tell how long we'll be waiting for the next
upstream release.

[Bug 2064483] Re: Ubuntu 24.04 doesn't respect vm.swappiness

2024-05-01 Thread Archer Allstars
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected noble wayland-session

** Description changed:

  My sysctl vm.swappiness returns vm.swappiness = 180.

  Swap kicked in when RAM is filled around 95%. I’m using zRAM as the
  swap.

  When this happened, my laptop is barely usable, as the system would have
  to do both the swap and compression at the same time. If `vm.swappiness
  = 180` worked as intended, the issue wouldn't have happened, as the swap
  would kick in early, which is good for zRAM system like mine, see kernel
  docs: https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/sysctl/vm.html#swappiness

  This is my main workstation (laptop). I used to run openSUSE Tumbleweed
  on it (~2 years). The experience with `vm.swappiness` is totally
  different.

  ---

  Here's my zRAM script:

  ```
  #!/bin/bash
  mem_total_kb=$(grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo | grep -E --only-matching
'[[:digit:]]+')
  mem_total=$((mem_total_kb * 1536))
  modprobe zram
  echo zstd > /sys/block/zram0/comp_algorithm;
  echo $mem_total > /sys/block/zram0/disksize
  mkswap /dev/zram0
  swapon -p 100 /dev/zram0
  ```

  Here's the content of my /etc/sysctl.conf

  ```
  vm.swappiness=180
  vm.page-cluster=0
  vm.watermark_scaling_factor=125
  vm.watermark_boost_factor=0
  ```

  I make a fresh install, not upgrading from the previous release.

  I also upload the screen recording of this issue on my personal Proton
  drive here:

  https://drive.proton.me/urls/5KTCS1DF58#qZTscuv5XE0M

- I mount ~/ramtest in the RAM, then copy the system's usr folder to
- ~/ramtest. Since most contents in usr are compressible, it should be
- perfect to show this issue.

[Bug 2064432] Re: Merge nginx 1.26.0 from Debian unstable for oracular

2024-05-01 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks Teward, I've updated the bug record accordingly.
Let me know if you would like to handle the merge when it comes; I'm good to
take it otherwise.

** Summary changed:

- Merge nginx from Debian unstable for oracular
+ Merge nginx 1.26.0 from Debian unstable for oracular

** Description changed:

  Scheduled-For: Backlog
- Upstream: tbd
- Debian:   1.24.0-2
+ Upstream: 1.26 (coming soon)
+ Debian:   1.24.0-2
  Ubuntu:   1.24.0-2ubuntu7

-
- ubuntu-server has maintained this package's merge in the past.
+ 1.26.0 is slated to land in Debian with ABI changes and rebuilds of all
+ third party modules

  If it turns out this needs a sync rather than a merge, please change the
  tag 'needs-merge' to 'needs-sync', and (optionally) update the title as
  desired.

- If this merge pulls in a new upstream version, also consider adding an
- entry to the Oracular Release Notes:
+ Also add an entry to the Oracular Release Notes for the 1.26.0 release:

-

  ### New Debian Changes ###

  nginx (1.24.0-2) unstable; urgency=medium

-   * d/control added dependency nginx-common to nginx (Closes: 1039905)
- After nginx installation, the nginx-common package is installed
- automatically due to its dependencies. The nginx-common package includes
- the systemd unit, which becomes enabled and activated upon installation.
- When the nginx is removed, nginx-common package and the systemd unit will
- remain in the system. Adding a dependency nginx-common to nginx solves
- this problem.
- * d/control fixed binNMU safe dependency declaration nginx to nginx-common,
- nginx is 'any', nginx-common is 'all' -> dependency '= ${source:Version}'
- * d/rules removed override_dh_strip, migration to automatic debug symbols is
- already done, fixes debug-symbol-migration-possibly-complete lint. warning
-   * d/po/ro.po added Romanian debconf translation. (Closes: 1033084),
- Thanks to Remus-Gabriel Chelu
-   * d/po/sv.po added Swedish debconf translation. (Closes: 1050443),
- Thanks to Peter Kvillegård
-   * d/conf/mime.types added video/ogg, video/x-matroska (Closes: 1028144)
-   * d/p/CVE-2023-44487.patch adds additional mitigations for CVE-2023-44487
- that according to NGINX developers on nginx-devel are already suitably
- mitigated with the default config options for keepalive. (Closes: 1053770)
-   * d/control added nginx-dev dependency on ${nginx:abi}
-   * d/debhelper/nginx_mod.pm automatic libnginx-mod-stream dependencies

[Bug 2064483] Re: Ubuntu 24.04 doesn't respect vm.swappiness

2024-05-01 Thread Archer Allstars
To make sure that vm.swappiness is really contribute to the tendency to
swap of the kernel as documented, I also did a test on Tumbleweed with
vm.swappiness=60, which is the default value.

The test result is as expected, the swap kicked in late compared to
vm.swappiness=180. And not only that, the system doesn't try to maintain
the free space in RAM.

2024-05-01 Thread Archer Allstars
I add a test on Tumbleweed in KVM with vm.swappiness=180.

The result is as expected, it's not broken in Tumbleweed. With
vm.swappiness=180 the swap kicked in at around 55% of RAM filled, not
95%. And it will maintain this free space percentage, depending on the
compression ratio of the data that's being swapped.

[Bug 2064363] Re: thunderbird snap on live systems "already running" but not responsive

2024-05-01 Thread Douglas Lucas
@u-jjohansen,

You ask:

```
what kind of configuration have you done?
```

I just:

```
sudo apt update
sudo apt install thunderbird
cp -R /media/lubuntu/drive/startup/thunderbird
/home/lubuntu/snap/thunderbird/common/.thunderbird
cp /media/lubuntu/drive/startup/lubuntu_thunder/profiles.ini
/home/lubuntu/snap/thunderbird/common/.thunderbird/
```

None of these are symlinked as far as I know. That profiles.ini has a
few profiles in it that tell Thunderbird to look for the PATH on the
local hard drive as opposed to the RAMdisk, e.g.

```
Path=/media/lubuntu/drive/hq/email/thunderbird/certainprofilegoeshere
```

Beyond the above, I haven't really done any config.

I'm no expert, but your #2 and #3 solutions seem too complicated for my
enduser use cases. Maybe #1 would be the easiest? #4 also might be a
longterm solution. #5 seems too risky. So yeah, I'm thinking either #1
or #4 ... but not sure :\

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 2051999 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2051999

That would seem to indicate the Ubuntu Mantic installation process is
creating the bpool with zfs flags that are incompatible with grub. I
wonder if the problem is still present in Noble Numbat/24.04?

Are you able to check which zfs flags/features are set after the bpool
is created? (use `zpool get all bpool` to get flags)

You will need to backup your /boot directory and recreate you bpool with
the `-o compatibility=grub2,ubuntu-22.04 \` option, as described earlier
in this thread.

[Bug 2060826] Re: hxtools ftbfs in Noble

Sorry, I should have given more details.
hxtools was FTBFS in Noble as it was failing to find a symbol from libhx. Which
has been fixed in libhx_4.23.
Oracular will get the new package from Debian, and the other bug on hxtools
fixed the FTBFS for Noble, so all good now.

[Bug 2064545] [NEW] Can't enter form field for secret user key passphrase

2024-05-01 Thread Daniel von Obernitz
Public bug reported:

When you configure an openvpn network using the gnome GUI for network-
manager-openvpn and select type "Password and certificate TLS" you can't
enter into the form field for the secret key passphrase - you can click
on it, but when typing, the previously selected field is overwritten.
Via tab you also can't navigate to the field. But it is possible to use
context menu and paste something in the field.

On Ubuntu 22.04 I had no issue with that, I ran into it testing 24.04.

[Bug 2064370] Re: Blank screen after boot in raspberry pi 4

2024-05-01 Thread Dave Jones
> If I switch to the KMS overlay, the message is exactly the same, so it
means the EDID is accessible from the monitor in either case.

Not quite the case I'm afraid. The output you're quoting there is from
the pi's bootloader running on the GPU. So, what you've established
there is that the GPU (which ignores hotplug, as noted in 6by9's comment
in the upstream bug) reads the EDID. This is all that's needed in the
FKMS case because there the kernel driver is a thin shim that just talks
to the firmware running on the GPU and retrieves EDID data from there.

However in the KMS case, the bootloader eventually relinquishes control
of the GPU to the linux kernel, and the kernel then attempts to retrieve
the EDID independently (as least, this is my understanding of things --
I'm no expert in this area; corrections welcome!).

Glad to hear the force_hotplug option works; that largely gels with the
idea that the monitor is not correctly asserting hot-plug. If it's not
asserting hot-plug on boot, the would also explain why re-plugging the
monitor doesn't work either. FKMS doesn't care, it just reads the EDID
anyway, but the KMS driver is waiting for a signal to do so and there's
none on boot, or later when the monitor is re-plugged.

[Bug 2058401] Re: Enable automated tests

2024-05-01 Thread Jeremy Bícha
I am handling this via Debian and the changes will be synced to Oracular
soon. Therefore, I am unsubscribing ubuntu-sponsors. Feel free to
resubscribe if you have something else that needs to be sponsored.

I pushed the autopkgtests there but I needed to add a commit to fix some issues
seen there:
https://salsa.debian.org/debian-remote-team/freerdp3/-/commit/f814cdf193

I opened a merge request to get some more feedback from an upstream developer
about why enabling build tests lead to a major increase in exported symbols:

[Bug 2061668] Re: [SRU] evtx_filter_records.py crashed with ModuleNotFoundError in Noble

2024-05-01 Thread Sudip Mukherjee
Attaching updated debdiff for Noble with modified version.

** Summary changed:

- evtx_filter_records.py crashed with ModuleNotFoundError in Noble
+ [SRU] evtx_filter_records.py crashed with ModuleNotFoundError in Noble

** Description changed:

- evtx_filter_records.py fails to run with the error:
+ [ Impact ]

- $ evtx_filter_records.py
+ evtx_filter_records.py will fail to run with the error:
+
+ $ evtx_filter_records.py --help
  Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/evtx_filter_records.py", line 3, in
  from lxml import etree
+ ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'lxml'
+
+ The error is because its missing one of the runtime dependencies.
+
+ [ Test Plan ]
+
+ 1. install python3-evtx
+ 2. execute evtx_filter_records.py
+
+ If the package is not fixed it will result in the above error.
+
+ With the fixed package it will print the help message:
+
+ $ evtx_filter_records.py  --help
+ usage: evtx_filter_records.py [-h] evtx eid
+
+ Print only entries from an EVTX file with a given EID.
+
+ positional arguments:
+ evtxPath to the Windows EVTX file
+ eid The EID of records to print
+
+ options:
+ -h, --help show this help message and exit
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ There is no change in code and it only fixes a runtime dependency and so
+ imho, there is very little chance of any regression.
+
+ [ Other Info ]
+
+ The test folder of the source package contains some .evtx file which we
+ should be able to test but I am trying to figure out "EID" that needs to
+ be mentioned as an argument
+
+ [ Original Bug Description ]
+
+ evtx_filter_records.py fails to run with the error:

[Bug 2064028] Re: after upgade ubuntu from 23.10 to 24.04 no if-up.d script are executed after connecting to openconnect vpn

2024-05-01 Thread Sergio Durigan Junior
It's also worth noting that ifupdown is being slowly deprecated in
favour of more modern solutions, like networkd-dispatcher.

Having said that, I tried placing a test script inside /etc/networkd-
dispatcher/routable.d/, but it still doesn't work.

[Bug 2064543] [NEW] cannot upgrade to 24.04 says their are unsupported launchpads

2024-05-01 Thread Richard Seitz
Public bug reported:

This was caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
This is most likely a transient problem,
please try again later.
If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If
you want to investigate this yourself the log files in
'/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade.
Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'.
