I just switched my system to use the i810 drivers, and there it works
properly.
This is on a Dell Latitude D500 with Intel 855GM video.
So I agree that this is a bug with the intel driver.

Found another relevant datum:
It's not the keypress that does it, it's the video output switching. On
my system (Dell Latitude X200), if I place the machine in the mediabase
with the lid closed, it will automatically change to the external
display. This will also crash gnome-settings-daemon.
Another point to consider: Even if the user goes through the process of
updating/correcting the MB database, that process takes several weeks
before the results appear in the MB results. In the meantime, the
old/incorrect results will be returned.

I am not attempting to launch any application. This occurs when a
system application crashes. In this case, it was aptitude. It crashed,
and while apport was running, the notification icon appeared in the
