[Bug 1928558] Re: [Feature request] add "Software & Updates" application to Kubuntu

2021-05-18 Thread Alexander Browne
I think this is available already? In System Settings, under the
Hardware section, choose Driver Manager. There's a button labeled
"Relaunch Driver Manager" that will open it.

icon theme set to the Breeze theme (the Kubuntu/Plasma default).

[Bug 1925010] Re: shim-signed 15.4 does not boot on EFI 1.10 systems

2021-05-07 Thread Alexander Browne

[Bug 1925010] Re: shim-signed 15.4 does not boot on EFI 1.10 systems

2021-05-08 Thread Alexander Browne
I tested on a MacBookPro9,2 (13-Inch, Mid-2012).

0. I clean installed from the 21.04 release image
(http://releases.ubuntu.com/21.04/ubuntu-21.04-desktop-amd64.iso). FWIW
I made my usual choices

- Minimal installation

- Download updates…
- Install third-party software…

- Erase disk and install Ubuntu

1. Restarting after the install, the computer showed a gray screen and
never booted up as per the original issue.

2. I booted again from the install media, opened the live session, did
the workaround steps from #14 and booted into the Ubuntu 21.04
installation.

3. I enabled -proposed and ran `sudo apt install shim-signed` to upgrade
that package to version 1.47+15.4-0ubuntu2.

4. I tested booting several times – cold boots, restarts and holding the
option key to load the Mac boot menu – and the computer always boots
normally.

5. FWIW I also then ran `sudo apt full-upgrade` to install the other
available updates and the computer had continued to boot normally.

[Bug 1803792] [NEW] Can't pin/keep/lock Quod Libet 4.2 to docks using bamf

2018-11-16 Thread Alexander Browne
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading the music player Quod Libet to the latest version (4.2,
via ppa:lazka/ppa), I there's no option to pin it to the MATE dock
applet. I'm using 18.10, and I also tried Plank. A Quod Libet developer
confirmed the issue as well in Unity on 16.04. AFAICT, these three docks
all use bamf.

Since all earlier versions of Quod Libet work fine, I posted a bug with
them (https://github.com/quodlibet/quodlibet/issues/3029), but there are
no reports of any issue with it from other docks/shells, like GNOME
Shell or Plasma, so maybe it's a bug with bamf?

2018-11-17 Thread Alexander Browne
OK, thanks for taking a look, I appreciate it.

I did look at the syslog but I don't see anything related to banf or the
docks, just some gtk theme warnings...

I did notice, however, that Quod Libet 4.1 is listed in the MATE dock
and Plank as "Quod Libet", while 4.2 is listed as " - Quod
Libet".

[Bug 1768165] [NEW] No way to control showing icons on buttons with GUI

2018-04-30 Thread Alexander Browne
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu MATE has icons on buttons by default, but a lot of people like
the cleaner look of removing them. This also matches many other desktop
environments.

There's no way to change setting for showing icons on buttons with the
GUI. Using gsettings is not very discoverable or convenient for a lot of
people. This used to be available in MATE Tweak's Interface section, but
this was removed because the other options are no longer needed. This
has been noticed by others as well, such as .

I propose adding this to the Interface tab of Appearance settings. This
would mirror the very similar setting for showing icons on menus that
has a control there.

It was pointed out that dconf-editor offers a way to change the

[Bug 1762582] [NEW] Panel object don't stay at the bottom of a vertical panel

2018-04-09 Thread Alexander Browne
Public bug reported:

In Bionic, panel objects moved the the bottom end of a vertical panel
don't stay at the bottom. When I log in or reload the panel layout with
MATE Tweak, any objects set to be at the bottom move up to be below the
items at the top.

For example, my preferred layout is like this:

Brisk
Dock

(empty space)

Notification Area
Indicators
Clock

But every time I log in or load the panel the empty space disappears and
everything is aligned to the top.

This worked fine in all previous version I've used (so since 16.04 at
least).

It doesn't matter if I start with a blank panel and add everything or
take an existing one, like Familiar's top panel, and modify it.

It doesn't matter what items I'm using.

In the panel layout file the items that should be at the bottom do have
"panel-right-stick=true".

[Bug 1763198] [NEW] Icon stays highlighted with all windows closed

2018-04-11 Thread Alexander Browne
Public bug reported:

If the last window that was closed is a pinned app, the app's icon stays
highlighted on dock. This cosmetic issue occurs if desktop icons are
disabled.

In other words,

0. Disable desktop icons (MATE Tweak → Desktop → Show Desktop icons or
org.mate.background show-desktop-icons false).
1. Pin at least one app (I'll use MATE Terminal).

[Bug 1721669] Re: Restore Disk Image stuck at 0% using 100% of CPU, then Disks crashed when I closed its window

2018-04-12 Thread Alexander Browne
This occurs for me on a system that had been upgraded from 17.04 to
17.10. I've now upgraded it to 18.04 pre-release and Disks's restore
function is working again. It does seem to use a lot of CPU, however,
but I haven't compare it with another system very scientifically.

[Bug 1892085] [NEW] Wrong cursor theme (Adwaita) for cursors set by CSS, like cursor:wait and cursor:grab

2020-08-18 Thread Alexander Browne
Public bug reported:

0. In an Ubuntu 20.04 live session or new installation, install the
Chromium snap and Google's Chrome deb packages.

1. In both browsers, try the MDN cursor demos at
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/cursor for cursor: wait
and cursor: grab. (Click the "cursor: wait;" or "cursor: grab;" button,
then move the mouse over the blue box on the right to see the cursor set
by that CSS option.) Or any view any page that sets these cursors with
CSS such as

- cursor: grab
- Accuweather/mapbox radar maps, e.g.
https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/minneapolis/55455/minute-weather-forecast/348794
- Google Sheets, e.g. hovering over a highlighted cell's border
- cursor: wait
- NYT video pages while the video loads, e.g.
https://www.nytimes.com/video/us/politics/10007231439/who-is-kamala-harris.html

2. Observe that in Chromium, the CSS-set wait spinner and grab hand
cursors are using the Adwaita theme, instead of the Ubuntu-default Yaru
theme. The correct Yaru theme cursors are used in Chrome and other apps.
(Note that for the cursor:grab examples, the Adwaita grab cursor [black
hand] is shown when *hovering*, but the correct Yaru cursor [white hand]
is shown once you click down, since this is no longer set by
cursor:grab.)

2020-10-20 Thread Alexander Browne
Also, FWIW since I reported this, I have noticed something similar in
another snap: KeepassXC, when unlocking your vault, shows the Adwaita
spinner. It only flashes for a short time, so is easy to miss. Not sure
if that's also a fallback issue like this or something different.

[Bug 1900783] [NEW] [snap] On Groovy, Chromium snap takes much longer to load the first time after reboot

2020-10-20 Thread Alexander Browne
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Focal to Groovy, and now the first launch of the
Chromium snap after a reboot is taking much longer than before. On my
main home laptop it takes over 30 seconds, while under Focal I don't
remember it taking more than 10 seconds.

I tried another computer I could erase. On Groovy that computer takes
nearly a minute to launch the Chromium snap after rebooting. Then I
clean installed Focal on the same machine, and the Chromium snap takes
just under 10 seconds to launch after a reboot. For both I installed all
updates, and I let the computer sit idle for a few minutes after
rebooting to try to rule out other activity.

I haven’t noticed the change for any other snap, although I don’t use
any that I ever noticed as much of a launch delay as Chromium. (VS Code
for one doesn’t seem slower — certainly not taking nearly a minute — but
I haven't done a real comparison like for Chromium.)

[Bug 1900783] Re: [snap] On Groovy, Chromium snap takes much longer to load the first time after reboot

2020-10-22 Thread Alexander Browne
On my main/home computer I've only tried beta channel, but with the
other computer I've tried both stable and beta. It doesn't seem to make
a difference.

Here is what I got for that command on Groovy:

STABLE

ab@mb:~$ snap run --trace-exec chromium

I deleted the chromium data (rm -r ~/snap/chromium), launched chromium
once, then rebooted and waited briefly, and finally ran the command.
Then I refreshed channels and did the same again.

If it's useful I can reinstall Focal on that computer when I'm back at
work tomorrow, and get the same info.

[Bug 1900783] Re: [snap] On Groovy, Chromium snap takes much longer to load the first time after reboot

2020-10-23 Thread Alexander Browne
FWIW I hadn't tried Google Chrome on this computer, so I installed it
(same stable version as the snap), and it loads with normal speed on
cold boot and subsequently.

** Description changed:

With the latest kernel (5.0.0-11-generic) my MacBook with nouveau shows
wrong colors and can't control brightness while running Ubuntu MATE. For
example, Ubuntu MATE green appears as teal and orange like in the
Firefox logo and window decorations is blue. This includes the plymouth
boot logo, but not the desktop wallpaper.

Screen brightness can't be controlled at all, neither with the keyboard
keys (which have always worked automatically) nor in the Control Center
  > Power Management because no brightness slider appears at all.

This also occurs in a live session from the latest daily build
  (20190413.3).

It does NOT occur in a live session of the latest (20190413.2) Ubuntu
  Desktop (GNOME).

By editing /etc/default/grub to boot the previous kernel (5.0.0-8-generic),
it works normally again.

[Bug 1836211] [NEW] bcmwl fails to install with recent Eoan (Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.0.0-20-generic)

With recent Eoan builds, bcmwl fails to install completely, . It had
worked when I installed Eoan a couple weeks ago, but not when I first
tried to clean install on 9 July until today. (I've unfortunately erased
the old, working installation so I don't have more details.)

[Bug 1836211] Re: bcmwl fails to install with recent Eoan (Bad return status for module build on kernel: 5.0.0-20-generic)

2019-07-16 Thread Alexander Browne
I went to try again and get the log ... and with today's build it is
working. Let me try on the other machine that I was seeing this with and
then I will close the bug.

(The one thing I noticed is that I needed to restart the computer before
it worked, while I could swear it used to work as soon as the driver was
installed, and so also in a live session. But I have no proof, and maybe
it was a different proprietary wi-fi driver I'm thinking of.)

[Bug 602890] Re: Kubuntu: When minimizing the installer window there is no way to get it back

2019-07-19 Thread Alexander Browne
I just installed the latest build of Eoan and had this happen. I chose
the install open, without trying the desktop. I had maximized the window
and then clicked minimize by mistake instead of un-maximize. Alt+Tab
didn't do anything. My workaround was to switch to another virtual
terminal and kill kwin, after which the installer appeared without
window decorations.
