Thanks Brian you are a genius! That seems to have fixed it.
I have two (almost) duplicate installations of 12.10 here and they were
both suffering the same problem. I found the same syntax error in both
machines' GRUB files and after correcting them they both updated without
error and are now

Firstly, my apologies for the delay commenting back about this bug. I
have had a busier than normal few months studying for pilot school and
since I have three operating systems on this machine, if one of them
isnt working when I'm busy I tend to just make do with one of the others
until I have
Step one complete - Some errors were generated:

Building dependency tree
After the error in step one (install -f) above, restart, step two
(clean) and step three (update) completed with no issues.
Will now restart and attempt to reinstall the update.
