Followed a suggestion from ubuntuforums and installed libsdl1.2debian-
all.
Sadly, it did not resolve the issue. Installing that package removed the
libsdl1.2debian-alsa package.

priority for karmic+1, it seems like the idea is to make grub2 as

I was using Consolas 8 in xchat-gnome, and other apps that use a fixed
width font. gnome-terminal, which I use regularly with Consolas 8, does
not exhibit this problem - ever, even when using irssi (another irc
application). Pidgin does not use the fixed width font, so I don't see
this issue.

It doesn't happen with every image -- and it's not a specific filetype
either -- i've reproduced it with JPEG and PNG files.
I've also found files where the problem doesn't occur at all.
Scrolling around via the scrollbar and via the arrow keys will trigger
the issue.

I did a fresh install from the Karmic Alpha 1 cd, and when changing
brightness using the fn keys on my laptop, the old notification comes up
(centered on the screen, in the bottom half of the screen).
This worked fine in Juanty.

of the image seem to get repeated onto the original image, resulting in

On Karmic, I changed /etc/pulse/daemon.conf resample-method to ffmpeg in

After changing default-fragment-size-msec = 5, i still get stuttering. I

I ran pulseaudio in console mode, and received these errors:
