Yes, new fix fixes bug 872483, but not the crash.
I also think that crash is independent of both fixes.
It is probably the same crash as in bug 793244, that was reported for
cups 1.4.3-1ubuntu1.3. Just, for some reason, we didn't experience it

Unfortunately, usb backend doesn't crash reliably. If I retry the job
that crashed usb backend the first time, it prints successfully the
second time.
It seems that it is not the print data that crashes usb backend, but
some other usb or printer related event.

The only difference between Job 32973 and 32974 is that job 32973 is the
first job printed after turning the printer off and on.
USB transaction timeout during read/write problem only appears on the
second or later job.

Updated CUPS does not crash anymore. However, the printer still stops
responding after random number of successfully printed pages.

dmesg shows this line repetedly:
[ 91.773332] usb 1-2: usbfs: process 838 (usb) did not claim interface 1
before use
Removed usblp from blacklist, modprobe'd it.
Printer status:

Updated to CUPS 1.5.3-0ubuntu2~ppa15.
Executed:
lpadmin -p queue -R usb-no-reattach-default
lpadmin -p queue -R usb-unidir-default
Successfully printed 15 jobs (without blacklisting usblp) - no hangs.
