I got this to work (Ubuntu 10.04), but I am not sure what I did that made the difference. I did add a file /etc/modprobe.d/sound which contained options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m22 enable=1 index=0 alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel this did not seem to work right
