Description of problem:
Abyssinica SIL is an old font. It's barely legible and breaks in most
apps. Noto Serif Ethiopic, on the other hand, is a modern and well
designed font.
Noto Serif Ethiopic is distributed with the Open Font License, so
packaging it won't be a problem.
Might be related to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=324438 as
changing the GTK2 Theme in KDE to something other than oxygen-gtk
seems to fix the problem here...

I installed Ubuntu Christian Edition (Linux) for the first time
yesterday. One of the first tasks was to install esword, which I did,
