I think there are several issues mixed in this bug report.
I can confirm that I have the same behavior than comment #9 with beta 2 on a

When I plug a monitor (dvi) to the laptop and try to boot the live cd it hangs

I found that the problem I am experiencing is already reported as bug #533135

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: inkblot
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32 bits) and Inkblot 0.99.9-1build1.
When I launch inkblot, it appears a 'X' on the applet icon.
If I run in a terminal the application, output is following:
Unknown IEEE 1284.4 error number 66
If I select 'Rescan

Tristan Schmelcher thank you very much to invest some time on this issue.

Why does this affect the nvidia-graphics-drivers-180? Aren't those the non-free
drivers? I assume that the livecd uses the nouveau drivers.
I have the same problem with Aplha3 (64 bits) running the Livecd from a USB key.
After waiting for a while with the black screen, I tried switching the VTs

I have the same issue in a Dell Precision M90. Following the advice of
reporting the wrong wiring stuff upstream, I found at alsa's bug
tracking system that it is already reported (I think by the gust at the
laptop testing team, not sure).

Blank screen on boot unless nomodeset specified
I tried inserting nouveau before vga16fb but the changes seems not to be
reflected at boot time, vga16fb still loads before nouveau. I'm running
the 03/06 daily build livecd for desktop-amd64. Should I regenerate the
initramfs?

Nouveau interacts badly with vga16fb - blank screen before X
I did that in the LiveUSB but it seems that the update-initramfs is
using the configuration of the read-only fs mounted at /rofs. So the
changes do not reflect

I am almost sure, I undid all the workarounds previously suggested in the
comments (and Karmic Caveats), and with the attached pulse path the volume
control is working fine. (both Master+LFE are equally affected first, then PCM)
Alsa exports two analog volumes one for Master and one for LFE
Could you please point me where can I read an explanation on why it is a
linux bug? I just cannot find any prove pointing into that direction?
