[Bug 747534] [NEW] common-lisp-controller should not be a recommended package for sbcl

2011-04-01 Thread Cyrus Harmon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sbcl

Common-lisp-controller can cause problems with ASDF2, which started
coming with SBCL sometime last year. And it's certainly not required for
SBCL -- there are better solutions to the problems it attempts to solve,
such as ASDF2 and quicklisp and I think at this point c-l-c causes more
problems than it solves.

[Bug 747544] [NEW] Upgrade SBCL package to 1.0.47 release for natty final

2011-04-01 Thread Cyrus Harmon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sbcl

1.0.45 has a nasty bug which makes CLX (X Window Library) unusable. This
means ubuntu-packaged-SBCL users can't run mcclim applications, among
other things. 1.0.47 contains a number of other useful enhancements/bug-
fixes including faster startup time on x86-64, CLOS optimizations,
better unicode encoding error handling, FFI improvements, and more.

Why is this marked incomplete? I'm still seeing this on 10.10 (and have
throughout the maverick dev cycle). Is more information needed?

[Bug 704284] Re: unacceptable mplayer performance on hd playback in natty

2011-02-18 Thread Cyrus Harmon
In theory, I could live with a diagnosis of incomplete but not
invalid. What sort of logs are you looking for? The performance data
is that video playback with mplayer on HD videos is unacceptable. I
don't know how to count dropped frames, but I can tell you that playback
is visibly, noticeably jerky and it wasn't this way under maverick. In
my opinion, It would be a shame if natty shipped without addressing this
performance regression.

I can say that performance does seem to have improved slightly with
recent xorg updates, but there are still noticeable, frequent jitters
that didn't exist under maverick.

currently working or not, but consider this a meta-bug/wishlist request
for working bluetooth keyboards and mice in maverick meerkat.

[Bug 575389] Re: Only HD video out of sync with sound

2010-09-19 Thread Cyrus Harmon
I see a similar problem playing H.264 videos (1936x800, 24 fps) with
MPEG-4 AAC (48khz, 159kbps) audio. Things seem OK, but by after playing
the movie for tens of minutes, the sound gets out of sync by a second or
more. FWIW, there are similar issues with mplayer. The video is fine on
lesser hardware running Mac OS.

[Bug 575389] Re: Only HD video out of sync with sound

2010-09-19 Thread Cyrus Harmon
I should have pointed out that this is on a recent meerkat:

Linux cbox 2.6.35-22-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 15 23:18:18 UTC 2010

Running on an i3 with intel's on board video. I don't think this is a
poor graphics HW issue, as things generally play fine, except for a
consistent audio drift that comes about very slowly over a long period
of time.

Hmm..., no, on further review, HD playback still seems much worse than
it did in maverick.

[Bug 1301164] Re: can't upgrade to trusty tahr

2014-04-03 Thread Cyrus Harmon
At a minimum the dialog box could give some more helpful information
about what package is actually causing the problem. Even better would be
suggestions on how one might fix the problem. As it is, the only helpful
suggestion is to file a bug, so, sure, you can mark this one as closed,
but I have a feeling you might see a lot of dups of the same problem...

[Bug 1383523] [NEW] system won't reboot after install

2014-10-20 Thread Cyrus Harmon
Public bug reported:

After (successfully, hopefully) installing the utopic release candidate
on a new system, the OS said it was rebooting but then just hung.
Pressing ctl-alt-delete reports failing in Starting store software
rfkill state and Starting Store Sound Card State.

It's possible that this is due to the funky new hardware I'm using,
haswell-e on an X99-deluxe motherboard. Happy to try track this down
further if it's of interest.

[Bug 1285444] Re: Login Successful, Desktop Never Loads

2014-12-11 Thread Cyrus Harmon
I have run into this problem on multiple occasions. Usually some random
combination of chicken shaking and deleting configuration files seems to
fix things. Not this time. This seems to be a very real problem
affecting multiple users. Can we get this bug unexpired?

[Bug 1768906] Re: Xorg crash

2018-05-04 Thread Cyrus Harmon
This happens with all combination of (bionic-ish) kernels and drivers
I've tried so far, including:

Drivers: NVIDIA proprietary installer 396.24, nvidia-driver-396
(396.24-0ubuntu0~gpu18.04.1), nvidia-390 (390.48-0ubuntu3+gpu18.04.2)

kernels: 4.15.0-20-lowlatency, a locally built 4.16.3

cards: GTX 770 and GTX 1070ti

I've tried erasing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, running things with and without
nomodeset, etc... all to no avail. Any suggestions for tracking this
down further? thanks!

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1543192 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1543192

It's not clear that there's an actual crash here, but rather maybe that
gdm3 can't acquire modesetting permission and can't find a display to
work with. Not sure that's going to trigger an actual crash. Still a bug
though!

[Bug 1769310] [NEW] "bootloader install failed" dialog box broken

Public bug reported:

On attempting to update to 18.04, and running into problems with my

[Bug 1773268] [NEW] locked out of system when upgrading to bionic from xenial

2018-05-24 Thread Cyrus Harmon
Public bug reported:

I was attempting to upgrade to bionic from xenial using do-release-
upgrade but forgot to turn off screen locking. After an hour of
inactivity, I ended up at the login screen but the keyboard won't allow
me to enter keys in the login window and clicking the field results in a
bizarre repeated "Failed to authenticate" message. See attached
screenshot.

[Bug 1768906] [NEW] Xorg crash

2018-05-03 Thread Cyrus Harmon
Public bug reported:

When attempting to log in to a newly updated bionic beaver via the
display manager (I think this is the right term), I immediately see a
crash, a return to the user selection/login screen and a no-longer
functioning keyboard and mouse. This happens both with the proprietary
driver installed drivers and with the apt installed nvidia-driver-396.

some interesting tidbits from the syslog file are:

[Bug 1768906] Re: Xorg crash

2018-05-04 Thread Cyrus Harmon
I'm not exactly clear what you mean by purging and settings removal.
I've run uninstall with the proprietary driver (and rebooted) I've used
nvidia-driver-396 and apt-cache remove --purge'd that. I've tried to
video cards now. In short, I've tried everything I can think of, but
still end up with the same problem.
