The problem was resolved by changing the syntax in /etc/network/interfaces. I ended up specifying the IP Address, Netmask, Broadcast, Network and on only one interface, specifying the Gateway tag. I think things got confused with multiple Gateway entries. NOTE: this syntax has worked from 7.0 -
