Public bug reported:
In Ubuntu focal, 20.04.2, amdgpu/Xorg kernel driver crashes/resets occur
with various previous-generation AMD Radeon GPUs, for instance Radeon RX
5500 XT. There is a recent fix in the mesa library.
Please see upstream mesa bug including available patch:

I saw in another bug that it already got backported in a PPA by Mario
Limonciello: https://launchpad.net/~superm1/+archive/ubuntu/lp1928393
However the bug manifestation looks different in that bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1928393
I attach a dmesg output
Since the situation was unbearable, as I didn't want to sit with a
kernel that had no recent security updates, I made the jump to 24.04
(beta), everything is running fine now.

Sorry I overlooked that last message. I actually had a working system
from around 6.2.0 to 6.5.0-17. It seems around 6.5.0-18 a new problem
was introduced that now causes intermittent freezes. See the new bug:

Additional info and observations:
- Sometimes there is also flickering in videos (for example zoom
calls), without freezing
- The flickering and freezes seem to be less (but not entirely
removed!) when using a lower refresh rate
- While I am using the mouse, no flickering will occur, as soon
** Description changed:
When running the HWE kernel linux-6.5.0-18 and newer in Ubuntu 22.04.4
LTS ( 6.5.0-18.18~22.04.1 ), I get intermittent freezes of about 1-5
seconds of the whole UI (even the mouse pointer stops moving). Sound
continues to work. There is absolutely nothing logged in
