[Bug 295122] [NEW] nautilus reports incorrect directory size

2008-11-07 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When I tried to find out how big my home dir was, I right clicked, and
it reported 127 GB with 22k files. That's not right so I tried again and
it reported 45 GB and some other number of files. Each time I try, it
usually reports a different size.

If I open the directory and select all of the files, including hidden,
nautilus reports 167 or so GB and a few more files. While typing this I
left the proprieties window open and a few minutes after I opened the
properties dialogue, it updated to 320K files 223GB.

My home dir is mounted on a separate partition and df reports that I
have used 318GB of it.

I imagine that it might still be calculating in the background but stopped
updating the size counter. I thought It was done and had not indication that it
was not. There is no noticeable HDD activity.

[Bug 293161] Re: 8.10 throws me to busybox on an Acer Aspire 5050-5410.

2008-11-03 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already
done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the
Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command uname -a in your next response.
It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version
you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command dmesg dmesg.log after a fresh boot and attach the
resulting file dmesg.log to this bug report.
3. Please run the command sudo lspci -vvnn lspci-vvnn.log and attach the
resulting file lspci-vvnn.log to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-
related bug reports is available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

[Bug 279746] Re: open office won't print in ubuntu 8.04. (Other apps print fine.)

2008-10-13 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
When you say nothing happens, do you mean that the document doesn't even
get put into the printing que? (the printing icon does not appear in in
the system tray with a document to print)

Would you please post some log files that might help track down the issue? This
is a file where CUPS writes information about what it is doing. Almost all
printing problems can be diagnosed from the error log, so it is the first place
to look to start solving problems. To be useful, you must change the logging
level:

1.Select System - Administration - Printing in the main menu
of your desktop. The printer setup tool system-config-printer will open.
Select Server Settings in the list on the left. Then check the check
box Save debugging information for troubleshooting and click Apply.

   2. In /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, find the line LogLevel ...; change it to
LogLevel debug; save.
   3. 'sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart'
   4. Try to print something.
   5. Add /var/log/cups/error_log as an attachment to the bug report.

2008-10-22 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
To quote an e-mail from Mark on ubuntu-desktop@:

+1 to removing it. It's there because I very much wanted to promote
Python as a ubiquitous scripting language across Ubuntu. Initially we
included Python interfaces for as much of the system as we could. I
think that has been eroded over time given the pressures of disk space
and the focus on non-developer users to the point where D-I-P is
unnecessary.

[Bug 200036] Re: Setting the time using the clock applet, shows authentication window below time settings window

2008-04-05 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
On a fresh install of Hardy Beta I set the time, added two locations
and then clicked 'set' to change the time to that location's timezone.
What followed was interesting.

I had another program open, a settings window from something in the
System menu, and when the password dialog popped under the other program
and I only noticed because the program was in the 'task-bar.' I could
not click the 'task-bar' to bring the password window forward, nor could
move the window on top out of the way.

I pressed enter on my keyboard so that the password dialog would see me
as typing in nothing for my password and go away. I then moved the
window that was in the way off to the side of the screen so that when it
prompted me again, I could see the password prompt.

Here is the interesting part; while I was dragging the window out of the
way, the password prompt popped up again and tried to steal focus and
then lock itself in focus, but what happened was that the window I was
dragging got locked into focus.

So my line of thought is that this has nothing to do with the clock applet, but
rather the gnome stuff, that I know almost nothing about, that deals with that
authentication window.

2008-04-05 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
Thank you for your time in running the Hardware Test! When you run that
specific text a second window should be displayed that would simulate a
video.

The window looks like a color test pattern for TVs with the lower right
hand corner being static, as if the old analog TV was tuned to a channel
that was not broadcasting.

Try the test again and see if you can see the video, it is not referring
to the text label.

[Bug 214598] [NEW] photo will not delete on fat32 volume

2008-04-09 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: eog

appears similar to #42571.

I have photos on a fat32 volume and when I attempt to delete some photo
by right clicking on the image in eog, I receive an error saying that It
cannot do it. Nautilus has no issue deleting the files however.

I'm running 8.04 Beta.

I expected that the same dialog that nautilus displays when deleting a
file to be shown in eog for file deletion.

[Bug 196994] Re: failed to update dbus - 404

2008-02-29 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
Did you try to update from the terminal or the Synaptic Package Manager?
Do you have a internet connection? more specifically, when you go to
91.189.88.31 in Firefox on that machine, does it work? (was this too obvious of
a question?)

Most importantly, did you reload your sources list before updating? It
is the blue button at the top toolbar of synaptic. It appears that the
versions that are trying to be fetched are not on the server, so it is
strange to me.

I'm not a pro, or anyone at all for that matter, but there appears to be
a problem with how the makefile is discovering the version number.
Diving into that makefile is where I would go next.

vbox seems to disagree [version 2.6.24.2] with that idea.

[Bug 197267] Re: getting ACPI Invalid PBLK Length 5 - message on Hardy Alpha 5

2008-03-01 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
A quick Google of this obscure error message leads me to believe that
you are not that first to be confused by it and it should really be
worded into something that makes sense to normal people like you and me
at least.

[Bug 197299] Re: [hardy] link open problem hardy

2008-03-01 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?
* If possible, please take a screenshot of the program in question and attach
it to this bug report.

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

[Bug 196994] Re: failed to update dbus - 404

2008-03-01 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
bigern75 tried it from multiple computers running hardy after a 'sudo
apt-get update' ?

Looking at the repository that it is trying to access there are no files
by those names on the server. There are similar ones however, I'm not
familiar enough with apt-get enough to troubleshoot, so I'll pass the
buck and just reopen the bug.

I hope someone can enlighten us on what is causing the issue.

[Bug 196858] Re: Video not detected Hardy KDE 4

2008-03-01 Thread Dereck Wonnacott
After X fails to start you should be given a warm and welcoming console
connection. If not, press Ctrl+Alt+F3 to switch to another console
connection.

once you are at the console you have a myriad of options, you could
start an SSH, Telnet, FTP, or heck, even an HTTP server and pull the
files off the computer. Or you could use command line sendmail to e-mail
a file to yourself and copy and paste on another system. Be creative,
the console is not scary at all, and if you need any help, just google
or ask.
