[Bug 578585] Re: gnome panel conflict: Unity keeps reloading on my system and get white background...

2010-06-11 Thread Dougie Richardson
I can confirm this behaviour on a Samsung NC10.

Deleting ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session has an effect, the same
flashing background occurs but the Ubuntu log in sound plays before
entering the cycle.

Running mutter --replace, all is well but if I then run unity, or
issue Running mutter --mutter-plugins=/usr/lib/mutter/plugins/libunity-
mutter.so.0 --replace I get:

(unity:4943): Gdk-WARNING **:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gdk/x11/gdkdrawable-x11.c:942 drawable is not a
native X11 window
The program 'unity' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 516 error_code 3 request_code 20 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 379781] Re: Section 7.1.3 of Help pages produces cannot display location ftp://anonym...@ftp.ubuntu.com

2009-05-24 Thread Dougie Richardson
Section 7 would require a working connection, which is why it isn't
opening the requested page.

There is some ambiguity as to the DNS entry so I've patched it to read:

12. Select the DNS tab
13. In the DNS Servers section, click Add
14. In the highlighted text box enter your ISP's DNS
15. If you have a second DNS, repeat the process
16. Click Close
17. Ensure the connection is ticked in the connections tab and your modem
connection should now connect
18. Click Close

If this still doesn't work or you need to make any changes, let me know
- I don't have a modem connection to test this with.

[Bug 310331] Re: Invalid docs for Internet modem connection (dialup) in 8.10 intrepid

2009-03-25 Thread Dougie Richardson
String freeze is tomorrow, I'm more than happy to use a better solution
than mine (I especially don't like the need to manually install a
package). I'm also happy to ask for string freeze exception if someone
has a solution.

Its a same because this package is very well integrated into Netbook
Remix.

Hi Osama,

You have done the same thing yourself - you said google for it instead
of used an Internet search engine. That's the point, language changes
- nouns often become verbs if their meaning is widely enough understood
and there's no well known alternative.

[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-12 Thread Dougie Richardson
With respect, this is splitting hairs. Bash is GNU but the way it is
accessed mightn't be a GNU program at all. I don't think its necessary
to explain the kernel at all in the basic commands section - perhaps a
reference in the introduction section (which I _think_ there already
is), illustrating that there is a difference between the terms but that
the term Linux is used meaning the whole package.

In the examples you have cited, the better replacement term is bash.

[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-11 Thread Dougie Richardson
The word has come to mean the entire operating system and associated
packages in much the same way as Hoover has come to mean vacuum
cleaner or Coke has come to mean cola.

The use of the term Ubuntu in this context is inappropriate as it
conveys that Linux is Ubuntu, which is no more correct than any of the
other terms.

Moreover, even the Linux Home Page describes it as:

Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus
Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world.

Wikipedia as:

Linux (commonly pronounced IPA: /ˈlɪnəks/ in English; variants
exist[1]) is a generic term referring to Unix-like computer operating
systems based on the Linux kernel.

I think this conveys the correct spirit and although there is a
difference in so far as GNU/Linux is GNU tools combined with the Linux
kernel, very few people see this differentiation and in the absence of a
suitable word to express the concept of the system as a whole, frankly I
don't see the need.

[Bug 324935] Re: Not enough detailed instructions to start and operate Rhythmbox, musicBrainz or Sound Juicer. Many a time the instructions tell me what to do but does not tell me where to go to do it

2009-03-05 Thread Dougie Richardson
Ted,

I can appreciate your frustration. I just began reviewing this section
and its extremely out of date. I've rewritten the current instructions
for the music section with step by step instructions, having tried to
carry out the functions in Rhythmbox. In fact, I just did importing
music from CD's.

If you are interested in helping with the documentation then you can
follow the links duanedesign gave - the team communicates mainly by
mailing list. A lot of work involves writing the material in a standard
format that facilitates translation and integrates with both web and
yelp (the help browser). If you feel you want to put forward guides in
English then I'm sure one of us would be happy to rewrite them in
DocBook for publication, you can contact me direct if you like.

If you have only met one person who knows a little about Ubuntu then I
can recommend http://ubuntuforums.org/ where there is a team dedicated
to new users.

I understand but the link now uses apt-url rather than the user typing
