For now, an easy workaround is to install the ttf-bitstream-vera font

This bug relies on Jack getting accepted into Main (as Артём Попов had
mentioned). However, before that can be done, all of the necessary
dependencies of Jack need to be accepted into Main (I believe libffado
is one particular important piece). Some members of the Ubuntu Studio
dev team have
Public bug reported:
Jack should be put into the Main repository so that other sound servers
in Ubuntu can integrate with it.
Here are a few related bugs that all depend on this action:

Binary package hint: ardour
Currently in Karmic, the 2.8 source package does not build. Here is the
build error:
g++ -o libs/midi++2/fifomidi.os -c -Woverloaded-virtual -DGTK_NEW_TOOLTIP_API
-O3 -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math -fstrength-reduce -pipe -g -O2 -g -Wall

Updated debdiff removes the
include /usr/share/cdbs/1/class/gnome.mk
line that was killing the build, and should no longer be needed in Karmic
anyway.
This patch hasn't been fully tested yet due to Bug #412634
