I have been able to solve the problem by using FreeNX server (karmic) from the PPA https://launchpad.net/~freenx-team/+archive/ppa. It appears that the reported bug has everything to with VNC not being able to display KDE4 widgets correctly, regardless of the vnc server (tightvnc, vnc4server).

The are both Kubuntu Natty using the Intel driver. I could boot the 64-bit 945G with a 32-bit USB stick and see if that helps. And I could switch temporarily to a lower resolution, but not 1024x600 I guess. Actually the 64-bit machine has only 2GB of RAM not 4. I'll report back with the
