Here's a version of my patch without the unnecessary print statements.
Again, I'm not pretending to solve the problem, but it may help others
who are waiting for the official fix.
** Patch removed: Hack to work-around the broken debug statements
This is the patch I currently apply every time there's a duplicity
upgrade to work around the broken debug statements and carry on with the
rest of my backup.
It's certainly not ideal an I'm not suggesting it be accepted upstream,
but it may be useful to other users until that bug is fixed.

That's a pretty cool use case :)
Can you think of any problems that this ignoring of certain characters
might cause? I'm trying to think whether or not it should be a command-
line argument...
In any case, I like the idea and will look at doing it a little later in
the Debian release cycle.

will happily review it for inclusion in the Debian package.

safe-rm breaks down during update to lucid
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: perl
Due to an unfortunate extra dependency on English.pm that got introduced
in safe-rm 0.5, safe-rm will break when perl is upgraded and thus it
will prevent the rest of the dpkg session from working until its symlink
is removed. See LP #568571
