it might be something else. I'm trying different combinations of

FWIW I can still see this bug with Maverick's beta live on the laptop I
previously reported.
Booting without a USB mouse plugged in goes on until the desktop is fully
loaded, then, as soon as I start using the touchpad the screen blanks and the
machine becomes totally unresponsive.

Seems related to the old radeon mobile drivers bug which seems to never
have been fixed on both laptops I've experienced it, even after more
than a year, even if it's been declared fixed in the past. Can't find it
