[Bug 1858966] Re: Ubiquity/zfs/zsys creates MBR table when LiveCD legacy/bios booted

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1856863 ***

Thank you for your report.

This has been reported in bug 1856863. partman_auto creates a GPT when the disk
is bigger than 2TB but I'll verify it also creates a bios_grub partition on
legacy systems.
I'm marking this bug as duplicate.

[Bug 1857398] Re: ubiquity should support encryption by default with zfsroot, with users able to opt in to running change-key after install

2020-01-07 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
I agree with Richard and we had the same discussion yesterday with Didier.
We should expose zfs encryption in Ubiquity and align is on LVM. This would
leave the decision to the user to use or not ZFS encryption and not force him
to use it if he selects ZFS.

Secondly, we don't have any sort of feedback and the measure of the
impact of zfs encryption on our users is very limited.

It seems to me very risky to enable it by default without any way to
disable it, especially for an LTS and on a desktop where users are not
necessarily familiar with the CLI.

@Steve could you add a section with your vision of ZFS encryption to the
"ZFS on root" specification so we can discuss and refine the approach
there?

Thanks.

We'll do a release of ubiquity with this fix likely this week or next.
It'll close this bug report automatically and you'll be notified. Then,
next daily of focal will have the fix.

It won't be released to 19.10. There is no point release or daily images
for non-LTS releases.

[Bug 1856863] Re: Ubiquity crashes when partitioning the disk with ZFS installation

2020-01-06 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
I attached a branch that fixes this issue. It's a slightly different
implementation from what you suggested but basically the idea is the same.

I tested it on a system with gpt and msdos disk labels with and without an efi
firmware.

Thank you for the patch. I'll apply it.

Looking at partman-auto it uses gpt instead of msdos disklabel if the
disk is larger than 2TB. It was the case of the original bug report and
the duplicate.

Right it's an issue with CSM but I haven't been able to figure out exactly what
and produce a test case. The 4TB limit is a very good point though. I'll do
some more testing based on this hypothesis after EOY break.
Thanks for testing and your help.

[Bug 1854140] [NEW] add an option to not strip filesystem prefix from file names

2019-11-27 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Public bug reported:

The filesystem prefix of the files in the main/ directory is not
preserved when an initrd is unpacked with unmkinitramfs.

If the initrd is rebuilt directly from main/ with cpio, the resulting
file won't work because links are invalid.

unmkinitramfs should have an option to not strip filesystem prefixes and
preserve the content of the archive..

Yeah, but at least you should be able to proceed with the installation
in which nvidia drivers will be installed if you selected "Third party
drivers" and you should have a good resolution on the installed system.

[Bug 1853986] Re: installer crashes

2019-11-26 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Thanks for your report.

It's very likely due to the nouveau driver crashing. Could you try to
boot in safe graphics mode?

To do that, press any key on boot to display the boot menu and select
"try ubuntu (safe graphics mode)" If the live session boots, then try an
installation and select "Install third party drivers" in the installer.

[Bug 1848856] Re: zfs on root fails with grub syntax error with multidisks pools

2019-11-18 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
** Description changed:

- At the end of the upgrade from 19.04 to 19.10, the post process of the
- update-grub reports:
+ [Description]
+ When a pool is created on several devices like cache and log on separate
devices, mirror or raidz. When grub-probe queries the target to report the
device attached to the boot directory, it reports all the devices that make the
pool, one by line. The result is an error in 10_linux_zfs that generates an
invalid grub configuration file. Only the case 1 pool = 1 device was considered
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Create a mirrored pool
+ $ zpool create mirror /dev/Xda1 /dev/Xda2
+
+ 2. run update-grub
+
+ Expected result:
+ grub configuration is generated successfully.
+
+ Actual result:
+ The generated grub configuration file is incomplete and its syntax is invalid
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Low. The patch takes the first device returned by grub-probe which is the
first device of data of the mirror.
+
+ [Original Description]
+ At the end of the upgrade from 19.04 to 19.10, the post process of the
update-grub reports:

  Syntax error at line 185
Syntax errors are detected in generated GRUB config file.
Ensure that there are no errors in /etc/default/grub
and /etc/grub.d/* files or please file a bug report with
  /boot/grub/grub.cfg.new file attached.

  The system used https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/wiki/Ubuntu-18.04
-Root-on-ZFS to add zfs on root to a 19.04 system.

The syntax error in grub.cfg.new is an extra } on line 185. However,
comparing the grub.cfg.new to the previously generated grub.cfg under
19.04, there is a significant quantity of configuration missing.

Manually running update-grub generates the same error.
/etc/default/grub is the only file changed from default installation to
include zswap. This file was not changed prior to upgrade.

The error is reported during the processing of /etc/grub.d/10_linux_zfs
which is dated October 11. I attempted the upgrade on 10/18 and have
done multiple updates to get the latest kernel and remove old kernels
prior to the upgrade. So, I believe the problem is with one of the
  upgrade modules.

[Bug 1848399] Re: update-grub fails if zpools with unsupported feature_flags exist

2019-11-18 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
** Description changed:

- install from Oct 14 live installer failed.
+ [Description]
+ If a pool to import update-grub will fail because the import error message is
used as the name of the pool. The error is similar to:
+
+ "cannot open 'This': no such pool" when no ZFS pools are available
+
+ The error can be caused by anything such as an invalid feature or a
+ corrupted device.
+
+ The fix catches the error, displays it, ignore the pool but import
+ others.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ 1. Create a pool on a device and export it
+ 2. Corrupt the device for example by shuffling random blocks on the device
but not the header so it is recognized as a ZFS device
+ 3. Run update-grub
+
+ Expected result:
+ The pool is ignored and reported
+
+ Actual result:
+ Generation of the grub menu fails
+
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ Low since currently the script aborts on error as soon as it fails to import.
Worst case nothing imports and there is no zfs entries in the grub menu.

Fix in progress. For the testsuite, we cannot reproduce the very same
error, however by corrupting the disk we can reproduce a similar case
(error message is caught and used as the name of the pool)

Thank you very much for the detailed bug report and the patch. We've
applied your patch but removed the redirection to stderr to help
understand the error in case of failure.

[Bug 1848856] Re: Upgrade from 19.04 to 19.10 with zfs on root fails with grub syntax error

2019-11-13 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
Actually I think '\r' is a red herring. The problem is that if several
devices are used for a pool (raid, log or cache) grub-probe returns
several lines. Several are not handled properly when we generate the
line of metadata used to create the menu. The patch is to take the first
device returned by grub-probe.

2019-11-12 Thread Jean-Baptiste Lallement
I'll strip the \r as a safety measure but I cannot reproduce this issue.

I created a mirror on 2 devices with log and cache devices on separate
partitions of a third disk like your setup and the line separator is
always a new line character (0x0a) without carriage return (0x0d).

upstream proposal is to force everything through ZIL by creating the
swap like this:

zfs create -o sync=always -o primarycache=metadata -o
secondarycache=none -o logbias=throughput -b 4K -V 8G rpool/swap

I'll test with our setup on Ubuntu.

[Bug 1851055] Re: installation crash on vmware esxi

There is something odd with the partition table
Nov 2 16:21:59 ubuntu ubiquity: /dev/sda2: Created a new partition 2 of type
'Extended' and of size 128 GiB.
Nov 2 16:21:59 ubuntu ubiquity: /dev/sda3: Created a new partition 5 of type
'Linux swap / Solaris' and of size 2 GiB.
Nov 2 16:21:59 ubuntu ubiquity: /dev/sda6: Created a new partition 6 of type
'FreeBSD' and of size 2 GiB.
Nov 2 16:21:59 ubuntu ubiquity: /dev/sda7: Created a new partition 7 of type
'FreeBSD' and of size 124 GiB.

It should be 2,3,5 and 6 not 6 and 7. Hence the cannot resolve /dev/sda7
afterwards.
