After actually starting a game, I found out that sound does work when moving units. I still wonder why the sound menu is grayed out, but there does not actually seem to be a general sound system problem in my case. (Maybe only some sound events are working as your error messages indicate.) It can

I had exactly the same problem constantly since several years with different Ubuntu versions and different nvidia drivers. After adding agp=off to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in the grub config the strange black dots problem is completely gone! :-) ...maybe this helps someone too. -- You
