How about when switching power mode? I.e. going from powered to battery,
or from battery to powered. Does /etc/hdparm.conf have any influence
here? Is it even supposed to?
I solved my problem by installing laptop-mode-tools and used that to set
my hdparm settings.

back on again, the monitor stays off until I open the lid or move the

I have investigated further, and it seems like all my settings in gnome-
power-preferences are ignored when I boot my computer on battery power.
If I put my computer in suspend mode and resume it, everything seems to
start working. My display turns off when I close the lid, and further

I don't know if my issue is related here.
Ondemand and any scaling works fine for me when I run on AC power, but when I
run on battery only, the cpu behaves strangely and very rarely scales up. Even
if I load a flash game in my browser it stays at 800 mhz on the core running
the object.
Somehow my system started behaving normally on battery after a boot into
Windows 7. Any suggestions for what could be wrong?

I can confirm the issue on 10.10 with nautilus elementary, but as far as
I remember I have had this issue for quite some time. at least the last
4 or 5 Ubuntu versions. Nautilus doesn't reclaim memory. This accounts
for both file transfers and thumbnails.

Just experienced this after disabling the screen powerdown in power
settings, and then I just turned of my screen. However it didn't seem
like my session died before I turned the screen on again. At least thats
what I think since my 7z compressions I started before turning off the

Just retested a few times. EVERY time I turn of my monitor, the session
dies. Therefore I think my issue might be related to that my monitor has
an auto off function.
In dmesg I get the following every time it dies:

Oh, I should mention that by "auto off function", I mean that it turns
completely off so I need to push the power button again. I am trying to
disable this now, and see how it goes leaving Ubuntu setting for turning

Without installing java-wrappers, running maven-cache-cleanup gives you:
