I am not a developer so I have not figured out a workaround for this
problem. I have tried updates through the terminal and get errors there
as well. I will probably be doing a rollback to a stable release
eventually as I have too much learning to do to be able to fix this
problem and not enough time to learn but was hoping at least passing
this on to the developer community might help this new version become
 stable.

Please: look at first into /etc/lilo.conf: is there a line boot= and
a line root=? Then check the images at the end of this file. Are there
images? And to which files the images will be linked?

The next step could be: download and install the newest lilo package of
Ubuntu (upstream version 24.1) which should solve many problems with
liloconfig. Then try again liloconfig.

Please give me feedback about your results.

Hello Gustavo,

Gustavo Luvizotto wrote on 2014-10-02 12:57:

So, I have this image.. How can I set this for install manually? Thanks
 a lot for you concern.

You need the following files for using with lilo:

/boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-35-generic
/boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-35-generic
/boot/System.map-3.13.0-35-generic

The initrd.img should be created by mkinitramfs (inside initramfs-tools)
and must exist.

If you see all these files (with size 0) then try per hand to edit
the /etc/lilo.conf at the end of the file and create/update these lines:

image = /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-35-generic
label = Linux
read-only
optional
initrd = /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-35-generic

Then try to start lilo again.

If lilo still fail, then the next question: which type is your partition
of root directory (/). If it is a RAID than it could be difficulty running
lilo and you need some more handwork.

And then please check the lines with root= (with UUID) and also boot=
(with HDD ID) in /etc/lilo.conf and check whether these lines are o.k.

You have installed and configured lilo. But it seems your /etc/lilo.conf is
misconfigured!
AND you have installed and configured grub2 (grub-pc) which run without an
error.

The best way is to deinstall (purge) lilo!

 - for us the most important are Ubuntu-specific patches.
if you can support them for us, we don't need other changes.
The support is already inside of 23.1-1 which work with the file
debian/patches/ubuntu.series and support in debuild.

Here you can find the git repository:

This package (first try) is already on mentors.debian.net and
there is a threat with an review on

I have also get an review from Openwall maintainer with some

Looks like it was a problem with lilo and grub both being installed,
although I am using grub as the boot-loader. Not sure how to fix with
both installed, but removing lilo allowed things to update.

If this is the problem, then see the following thread in Debian:

[Bug 669363] Re: Please merge lilo 1:22.8-8.3(main) from debian unstable(main)

2010-11-23 Thread Joachim Wiedorn
Hello Sebastien,

Sebastien Bacher seb...@ubuntu.com wrote on 2010-11-23 10:56:

Is the git you are pointing there the official lilo one? Did you
official become maintainer for lilo in Debian or does that need to be
 reviewed and approved before landing?

The git of Lilo upstream is official, because I am the current developer
of Lilo. The Debian/Ubuntu git is still inofficial - but up to date. On
the other hand in the internet exists only a very old official CVS.

How I have said some days ago there is a difficult situation in
maintaining of Lilo in Debian. Here you can read more about this topic:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=587886

If the CTTE committee of Debian decide, that I may overtake the
maintaining, then I am the new maintainer.

Finally the new packages for Ubuntu can be uploaded to the official
  repository.

Shouldn't we rather wait on a Debian upload and sync from it?

We can wait, but I don't know how long we must wait: two weeks, two
months ...? Perhaps to long for Lilo and for Ubuntu.

The stable update rules usually allow only selected fixes for specific
issues, it's not likely that this version would be allowed as such but
backporting some of the patches might be possible. I would suggest

So there apply similar rules as for Debian.

Have a nice day,

Joachim (Germany)

Re: [Bug 470502] Re: upgrade to karmic: could not install initramfs-tools - Fatal: raid_setup: stat(/dev/hda)

2010-11-22 Thread Joachim Wiedorn
Please try the new package with LILO 23.1:
http://lilo.alioth.debian.org/ftp/ubuntu

These packages were made for Natty. If you cannot install them on Karmic
you can try to compile it by yourself (with debuild ...) with the source
package (same link).

Re: [Bug 669363] Re: Please merge lilo ... from debian unstable / new lilo 23.1

Now I have worked the last week on an universal source package for
Debian/Ubuntu. You can find my test packages here:
 http://lilo.alioth.debian.org/ftp/

There are new packages for Debian and Ubuntu, made with the same source
package of LILO 23.1.

It can be seen in the following git repository:
http://git.debian.org/?p=lilo/debian.git;a=summary

It can be downloaded for Ubuntu Natty (i386, amd86):
http://lilo.alioth.debian.org/ftp/ubuntu/

and can be downloaded for Debian Squeeze (i386, amd64):
http://lilo.alioth.debian.org/ftp/debian/

While working on these new packages I have analyzed all bugreports for
LILO in Debian and Ubuntu. I have created many patches which can now be
used to close 25 Debian bugreports and 5 Ubuntu bugreports.

Finally the new packages for Ubuntu can be uploaded to the official
repository.

Would it be a good idea to make packages for Maverick, too?
Which naming scheme would be the best? 23.1-1ubuntu1~maverick1 ?

Thanks for this link. I will try to create a package in this way of
 Raphael Hertzog have written.

It would be nice if someone will test it, too.

Unfortunately the maintainer of Lilo in Debian seems to don't want do
any work on this package anymore. But I hope we get a solution for this
 problem in the next weeks.

Because there are a problem with Lilo maintaining in Debian: Perhaps it
would be the better way to make the packages for Ubuntu directly above the
Ubuntu Developer Team without waiting on Debian maintaining.
