[Bug 983013] Re: Rhythmbow keeps playing / running in background if closed while playing

2014-04-09 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Incredibly surprising, had to google how to stop the sound. Who new that
the volume indicator suddenly had the music player that I killed inside
it? There's exactly zero indication to what's happening, and the
perception is that somehow the player wasn't properly killed. Very bad
usability.

It probably thinks those text files are subtitles but then
checks/handles them incorrectly...

Possibly, but it shouldn't read subtitles at all without already running
a media file, but rather just skip them. :)

2010-09-30 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
I guess this is the same... if I have the built-in webcam on my laptop
switched off when starting cheese, it will only report an error and have
no way to find it after I've turned it on. If it is possible to detect
that a camera has appeared, then it would be nice to not have to
restart. :)

Thanks!

[Bug 627906] [NEW] Actionscript files are improperly detected as OpenOffice.org files (Applix Spreadsheets spreadsheet)

2010-09-01 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

(First off, sorry if this is not a Nautilus bug per se, but that's where
I see the effect of it)

Actionscript files are improperly detected as OpenOffice.org files,
something called Applix Spreadsheets spreadsheet and opens by default
in OOo.

They should, apart from being properly detected, probably open in gedit
by default, at least that's what I would expect, like any other source
files.

OTOH, the file command only does slightly better:

If I read the patch to upstream right, this part is still left in on the

[Bug 584692] [NEW] GstDecodeBin2: This appears to be a text file

2010-05-23 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I often play music albums by opening the directory they are in in Totem,
I even have that set as an open-with action. Yes, there is Rhythmbox,
but I do play albums this way over SSH from servers etc, as well as I
like this way of playing music now. :)

If there is an unknown text file in the same directory, it gets added to
the playlist anyway, AND totem will stop playback on this file with the
error GstDecodeBin2: This appears to be a text file. Highly annoying
when you have to get up and go to the computer just to click the warning
away and delete this entry from the playlist manually.

Images, for instance, gets ignored and are not added in this way.

I propose that either:

1. Unknown text files should not be added to the playlist, or, if that's hard
to do:
2. Such files should just be silently skipped when playing

I was under the impression that pulseaudio should pretend to be ALSA, it
certainly has worked well enough earlier, like in Karmic, with the same
applications such as Spotify running in wine1.2 configured to use ALSA
driver.

[Bug 539972] [NEW] LUCID: Controls and applet stops working, possibly after some ALSA app has been activated?

2010-03-16 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

The volume control stops working completely and get stuck at 100% volume
sometimes. The hotkeys (fn+F keys on laptop) do not react anymore. The
volume control can be opened and the slider adjusted but nothing
happens. Individual applications with volume control, such as Rhythmbox,
Totem or Youtube flash player can still adjust volumes. Trying to open
Sound preferences results in a dialog saying Waiting for sound system
to respond and nothing more.

I think it may have something to do with apps that try to use ALSA and
that PA's emulation craps out or something?

It seems this happens after using for instance Wine programs (where
sound is horrible as well) which uses ALSA, and also it happened after
using Flash when I tried the version directly from Adobe, which didn't
use ndiswrapper like the one from repos does.

Will be happy to provide any other info if you can tell me what to
provide.

Completely updated 64-bit system with the below:

[Bug 405294] Re: a2dp skips terribly in Karmic

2009-12-22 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
I get this as well on a set of headphones from Sony, model DR-BT50. Used
to work in Jaunty, now doesn't work in Karmic. Get the messages in the
log and so forth.

I don't currently have any other BT devices connected so there is no
interference as such, but I do guess that it gets recognized as both a
headset and a a2dp device, as it is both.

I see that there are some workarounds involving setting configurations
and then using extra programs - is there any way to simply set this once
and for all, such as disabling the non-a2dp part?

Judging from when I filed the original report, I would guess that the

likely that it's at least partly a driver issue then.

[Bug 437863] [NEW] No window decorations in GLUT applications in compiz

2009-09-27 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

See bug #197820 for more details, test cases and analysis. As per
instructions in that bug, I am filing a new bug on a specific behavior,
since that was about several non-related issues.

I still have the exact same issue that started in Hardy (worked in
Gutsy) now in a completely updated Karmic as of today.

My testcase is to install and run crack-attack and observe that the
window decorations are invisible (but otherwise working). Note that
there is window decorations on the first part of the app that starts,
which is a normal Gtk+ menu, but when starting the actual game, the
decorations are invisible.

According to information in bug #197820, this is a general problem for
GLUT based applications under Compiz.

[Bug 432272] [NEW] [LENOVO 200893G] late resume failure

2009-09-18 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

(ubuntu-bug -p linux does not work, attaching files instead)

Supend/resume has been shaky all the way since I updated to alpha5 from
stable 904 - it has worked, but a bit erratically, often resuming
without asking for password and so on.

And yesterday, it stopped working completely, and after restarts, I get
the attached bug report from apport.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have
appeared to have completed normally.

[Bug 423090] Re: setup new device doesn't do anything

2009-09-07 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Actually it is a comment added to the nomination as well as a note on
what impact it has so there is a reason for the nomination.

Your comment is not only rather unhelpful but also rather elitist. Not
all of us do patches just because we use Linux. In fact, most of us
don't, and we still can contribute.

[Bug 422920] Re: empathy crashed with SIGSEGV in g_main_context_dispatch()

2009-09-06 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Got the same as Jean-Yves, more or less: Installed alpha5, worked
without a problem (also worked in the live CD) - then suddenly a crash
just randomly and after that it won't start. Apport first told me to
update, so I did that. No difference, apart from that Apport says that
it can't extract any useful information (guess no debug info
available?).

So it's hard to provide any extra info, since apport can't collect any.

I did set up one MSN and one Jabber account, and they worked at first.

[Bug 397211] Re: Shiretoko user agent string breaks compatibilty with major websites

2009-07-26 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
The Swedish bank Swedbank (at swedbank.se) displays a scary warning
when using Shiretoko, but otherwise lets the user move on (which is kind
of a sane approach, it's after all about my money here, not some chat or
video). This bank is otherwise great in that it officially supports
Linux and Firefox, but they can't be expected to know that Ubuntu has
special user-agents...

[Bug 208548] Re: en_SE locale needed to get correct weekdays in Sweden

2009-04-22 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Martin, this issue has been up many times during at least the last 3-4
years in forums, lists and various bug trackers. The system is
fundamentally broken IMO, and this is for some reason the suggested way
to go about fixing it.

The *correct* way to fix it would be to:

1. don't decide weekday based on *language* choice of the installing user,
because that has nothing to do with it
2. set the *default* based on location, which has everything to do with it
3. let users change the default in case it is guessed wrong (this would be
enough as a workaround)

However, for this to happen, we first need a sudden outbreak of common
sense in this issue. So, to not have a system that is broken, we need a
stupid workaround - I admit it's patently stupid, but what are we
supposed to do when there is no way to reason the above 3 points? It's
simply a broken system, but people seem to want it that way, for no
reason ever actually stated.

[Bug 208548] Re: en_SE locale needed to get correct weekdays in Sweden

2009-04-22 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
And oh, again, I don't ever want to have to fiddle with LC_* variables
or even know that they exist for this to work, as they do in any other
major OS. That was fine in the 90's. If it's supposed to be in a GUI, it
better be the option week starts on as it is in any say calendaring
program.

[Bug 353660] [NEW] Firefox-3.1: Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.1b3 and 1.9.1b3

2009-04-02 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.1

Ubuntu Jaunty, updated as of today. From today (or possibly yesterday)
Firefox 3.1 no longer starts.

firefox-3.1: 3.1~b3+build2+nobinonly-0ubuntu1
xulrunner-1.9.1: 1.9.1~b4~hg20090330r24021+nobinonly-0ubuntu1

Commandline output:

$ firefox-3.1
Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.1b3 and 1.9.1b3.

I guess it's likely it's a similar problem to bug #326312 or bug #201938
but no solutions suggested such as in the latter seems to work.

Yes, it's xulrunner. I know it's a test release in a beta OS, but since
I'm a silly man I use FF 3.1 as my main browser, and that's where all my
bookmarks etc is. :)

Anyhow, here's a working workaround until packages get back in sync:

If you mean that the completion sometimes stops working completely, then
yes, I see that too, on 3.5 as well. Need to restart browser to make it
work again.

[Bug 353660] Re: Firefox-3.1: Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.1b3 and 1.9.1b3

2009-04-02 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Searching launchpad and forums (and google) for Could not find
compatible GRE between version it's obvious this happens a lot and
affects a lot of people a lot of times when these packages gets a new
version. I sincerely doubt that it's a locale problem as well as
neither local nor central repository had 3.5 version for +24 hours while
the new xulrunner was there and broke things.

Anyway, I suggest that to avoid all these soon to be closed bugs each
time, that the reason is investigated and mitigated - it would be much
easier on the devs time, after all, because people will keep on
reporting it each time otherwise.

[Bug 353660] Re: Firefox-3.1: Could not find compatible GRE between version 1.9.1b3 and 1.9.1b3

2009-04-02 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
It is fixed now that 3.5 finally arrived in the repos.

My point was not that it isn't fixed now, it's that it's a commonly
repeated issue, as the suggested search would show. So, if this could be
avoided, lot's of bugs need not be filed then promptly closed.

That it is two people here (and a bunch in the forums, not everyone
comments me too, a good thing) does not really matter, the point is,
again, that there's a lot of these bugs over time, since something is
breaks at updates. As the suggested search shows.

By all means close away, this bug is not valid anymore. But you could
avoid it being repeated again and again.

[Bug 208548] Re: en_SE locale needed to get correct weekdays in Sweden

2009-03-30 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
This bug is not, repeat NOT about being able to use silly workarounds;
those has always been available.

This bug is about one thing, and one thing only: getting the same proper
support as, for example en_GB and en_DK, which mean a proper en_SE
locale.

This, since the whole system is broken from a don't want to fiddle with
config files, I only want my weeks start on the proper day for my
*location* and there is no checkbox for this-point of view. See
original report and referred bug reports.

So, can you please leave this bug open until this actually gets fixed?
You are saying fix released and refer to something completely
different, even worse, workarounds suitable only for people who wants to
open the hood and tinker themselves. I'm no stranger to that, but I
think we could aim for a better system than that. Ubuntu does not get
better by lowering the number of open bug reports, it gets better by
actually fixing the bugs. Again, this affects a large, probably dominant
part of Swedish users which shouldn't have to know they can mix-and-
match their LANG settings.

Thanks.

[Bug 349122] [NEW] [LENOVO 200893G] suspend/resume failure

2009-03-26 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Public bug reported:

Since a few days suspends does not work anymore, which it used to do
(resumes as well). If I press the sleep button I'm instead presented
with the GDM login screen.

I found the attached report in /var/crash (I was never prompted to send
anything automatically) and hope that it's relevant and helpful for this
regression.

[Bug 342946] Re: intermitten buzzing from speakers using hda-intel alsa on dell mini 9 jaunty netbook remix

2009-03-20 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
I still have the problem with that kernel, though I think it is much
milder.

It's easy to reproduce for me by using Pidgin preferences, the sound
tab, and clicking the preview button for Buddy logs in repeatedly. It
doesn't happen every time, but a lot of the time. Curiosly, Message
received does not seem to trigger it at all.

Also see Bug # 345627, which is about the same issue, or at least what I
mean with the same issue. :)

2009-03-18 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
I'm hearing something similar to this as well on a Thinkpad T60p with
Jaunty installed.

At times it crackles and buzzes, like interference or static. It seems
correlated with showing notifications from IMs, when people come online
and things like that. Playing the preview sounds in Pigdin preferences
has no crackle, and playng music etc. works fine on the computer. Still,
disabling sounds in pidgin altogether seems to fix the issue.

[Bug 30596] Re: WEP key for wireless takes only uppercase

2009-01-27 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
It was a long time ago, but it *should* be this card (from lspci), with
whatever default driver Dapper Flight 3 chose for it:

[Calexico2] Network Connection (rev 05)

The driver it uses now is 'ipw2200' but I have no idea about back then.

The card is built in on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M3438G laptop, and I'm
reasonably sure that I filed this report when I tried my first Ubuntu
install on it. My bad for not including all info back then.

When firefox returns from minimized, it often takes up the whole window,

You're doing it wrong. To restart pulseaudio, first kill it (killall
pulseaudio), verify that it's no longer there (`pidof pulseaudio`
shouldn't show any output, then start pulseaudio (pulseaudio -D).

Ah. So pulseaudio is different from all other services, that's a bug in
its own right...

If VLC can still play sound then it must be using ALSA instead of
 PulseAudio for its sound backend.

Yes, of course. That's just qualifying that sound is working in general,
that the sound card is properly initialized after resume. Though VLC
does not really tell what it's using, it says Default. ;)

 Try this fix:
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/202089/comments/79

Yes, that works, for now. Thanks!

[Bug 254312] Re: Audio fails after suspend, Intel ICH9 family

2008-11-09 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Got this in 8.10 32-bit, fully updated as of today, on two very
different machines. Attaching lspci for one for now, see about adding
the other later, if needed.

After suspend/resume, sound is dead. Applications freeze and can't play
sound (Rhythmbox, Totem, Youtube on Firefox, etc).

VLC can still play sound.

I tried the invokation above with pacmd, it worked for a few seconds
then pulse crashed and couldn't be restarted within the session.

Restarting X fixes the sound issue. Nothing else that I know of,
restarting pulseaudio does not seem to do it (unless I'm doing it wrong,
I'm using sudo /etc/init.d/pulseaudio restart).

[Bug 292929] Re: transmission 1.34 inhibits hibernation by default

2008-11-04 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Ubuntu 8.10
transmission-common 1.34-0ubuntu2
transmission-gtk 1.34-0ubuntu2

I have the same problem, though the effects for me is less severe (I
don't have that bug). For me it's more like:

Expected: I have a few torrents going. I am moving to another location,
so I suspend the machine, and when I wake it up in the new place it
reconnects to internet and the torrents resume.

Actual: I try to suspend the machine, but Transmission says: I'm sorry
Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that., so instead I have to mark all
torrents and pause them, then resume, then in new location repeat the
same process in reverse - if I remember to...

Maybe some people with desktop computers forget that they are seeding or
something, but for laptops this is a killer - especially if I close the
lid and go for a bit longer trip...

[Bug 262817] Re: [NM 0.7 - intrepid] DHCP org.freedesktop.Dbus.Error.AccessDenied

2008-11-03 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
I have this same issue. Updated a machine from Hardy and Networkmanager
died, or rather DHCP. Managed to get online with hard coded IPs and find
this report. :)

properly clean your changes and get the maintainer shipped config files
in place is not much of an instruction though, especially since I
haven't edited those files, ever, even though I suppose some package I
installed during hardy might have.

Anyway, adding the root entry seems to fix it. Is there a better way to
properly clean and getting in place?

[Bug 198336] Re: Wacom tablet unusable after moving USB cable

Still an issue with all Wacom tablets in 8.04, although sometimes it can
be jump-started by switching to a terminal and back (CTRL-ALT-F2, CTRL-
ALT-F7).

I've heard that the new hotplugging in Intrepid might resolve this
issue, as tablets are explicitly mentioned, but I haven't had the time
to test it, yet.

[Bug 61413] Re: Logitech DiNovo MediaPad should not toggle Numlock

2008-10-10 Thread Kristoffer Lundén
Robert, I doubt that this is ever what the user wanted. If the user
wanted to use numlock-mode on *another* keyboard, why press this button
on the mediapad? Why not press the numlock button that is exactly where
the numlock should be? This setup with two separate keyboards is
explicitly designed to be able to use parts of it in different
situations, and this behavior breaks it. It is also clear that this
button is not a direct mapping, it's special for this type of mediapad,
it even has three distinct modes.

Mario, sorry, I wish I could - but my mediapad is currently packed away
in another town, and I don't think I'll be able to fetch it in the short
term. Anyone else?

I found this blog post by Tom Callaway informative:

Or, probably, normal for corporations/lawyers.

The best idea would be if they could cut out ALL the crap and then do
what Fedora does with the rest (should be a few lines), methinks?

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 123920 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/123920

Remember, this bug report is a duplicate. Comment here only if you
think the duplicate status is wrong.

Again, it is wrong.

But to the real reason I post: this issue seems to be fixed for me now.
I am running hardy-updates and I am updating every day or so. This
weekend I noticed that I haven't had the need to restart bluetooth even
when leaving the computer for a long time. I can't point to any one
update, though, and I have no idea why this might be. :)

Can someone else with this problem (not the false duplicate in #123920!)
try to update what hardy-updates wants to add and try if it's fixed for
them as well?

Hope this is a real fix! If so, thank you developers! :D

Oh, so it's a recorded sound... it sure sounds more like somethings
broken in my speakers. I think it is the same, but it seems it is

This GNOME bug is about this sound:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=406144 - quote Rickard Hughes:
It needs to be quite painful to listen to be able to be heard in a
laptop bag.

The real bug is of course that suspend does work, but is giving error
messages anyways.
