[Bug 1391422] Re: GeForce 820M running very hot in Ubuntu

2015-01-16 Thread Lars Hansson
Actually, I think I know what the problem is. The 820M is one of those
card with a boost feature and on Windows the driver will boost until the
GPU temperature reaches 70C, then the driver will start downclocking the
GPU. On Linux this feature seems to be missing, the driver never
downlocks and the card will boost until either powerclamp starts
injecting insane amounts of idle time or (if you have disabled
powerclamp) the temperature reach the thermal limit (~96C).

I would think it a good idea if setting the pstate to performance
would disable powerclamp.

[Bug 1389077] Re: [HP ProBook 4530s] Intel Powerclamp is Slowing CPU

2014-11-15 Thread Lars Hansson
Yes, you have a point there about injecting idle time to the CPU to cool down
the GPU. The thing is that modern GPU's (and CPU's) already have thermal
protection so I don't need intel_powerclamp to protect anything. Now, if I was
interested in keeping the power usage down then powerclamp would be a good
thing but when I am plaing a game I couldnt care less.
Perhaps there should be a way to disable powerclamp from userspace in a better
way than rmmod.

2014-11-13 Thread Lars Hansson
Hi Christopher,
I updated the BIOS to F.18 but it doesn't change anything. Suspend/resume still
behaves as stated above. I also tried with the Nouveau driver but the result is
similar; on resume you get the graphical login screen (at least) but it does
not accept any input (keyboard or mouse) and it's not possible to switch to VT1.

The output of sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s
bios-release-date is:
F.18

[Bug 1391414] Re: Can not switch away from fullscreen wine program

2014-11-12 Thread Lars Hansson
Additional note: it works to switch back and forth with the fullscreen
game if you configure wine to not let the window manager control the
windows. This is very much less than optimal though since the wine app
does no longer appear in the icon bar but as an icon on top of the
trashcan in the icon bar and you can't switch back to it using alt-tab.
Switching back can only be done using the icon that is on top of the
trashcan.

[Bug 1391414] [NEW] Can not switch away from fullscreen wine program

2014-11-11 Thread Lars Hansson
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 14.10
Wine: 1:1.6.2-0ubuntu6
GPU: Intel HD 4000+Nvidia GeForce 820M
Nvidia drivers: nvidia-331-updates
Expected behaviour: Should be able to switch away from fullscreen wine program
to other, native programs.
What happens: You can switch away but all that is usable is Unity. The
desktop area is filled by the fullscreen program and it's not possible to get
any native application in front of it. It's also not possible to switch back to
the wine program, even if you alt-tab to it it remains unresponsive to input.
This only happens with wine and not with other fullscreen games run from, say,
Steam.

[Bug 1391417] [NEW] Unity displaces large wine desktops with fullscreen game

2014-11-11 Thread Lars Hansson
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 14.10
Wine: 1:1.6.2-0ubuntu6
GPU: Intel HD 4000+Nvidia GeForce 820M
Nvidia drivers: nvidia-331-updates

Expected behaviour: Using winecfg to set a virtual desktop the same size
as your screen (say 1366x768) and then running a game one would expect
the wine desktop to cover the entire screen.

What happens: Unity displaces the wine desktop down and to the right so you end
up with the right and bottom of the desktop outside of the display. The size of
this displacement is the same as the height of the top menu and the width of
the bar. This seem to only affect games that are set to run fullscreen and not
wine programs such as notepad.
This did not happen with wine 1.4 in 13.10 but did also happen with wine1.6 and
wine.17 on 13.10. On 14.10 this problem exist with at least wine 1.6.

[Bug 1391422] [NEW] GeForce 820M running very hot in Ubuntu

2014-11-11 Thread Lars Hansson
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 14.10
Wine: 1:1.6.2-0ubuntu6
GPU: Intel HD 4000+Nvidia GeForce 820M
Nvidia drivers: nvidia-331-updates

Expected behaviour: GPU temperature should not be excessively high when
running OpenGL games.

What happens: The GPU temperature gets very high when running OpenGL games. For
example, running The Talos Principle Public Beta from Steam in Ubuntu the GPU
temperature will go up to 95-98C but running the same in Windows 8.1 (on the
same laptop) the temperature stays below 80.
The same thing happens when running other games and games in wine.

[Bug 1389077] Re: [HP ProBook 4530s] Intel Powerclamp is Slowing CPU

2014-11-10 Thread Lars Hansson
Hi William,
How is your GPU temperature when this happens? Btw, as a more permanent
temporary fix than rmmod you can blacklist it by creating the file
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-intel_powerclamp.conf and adding the line blacklist
intel_powerclamp to it.

As for my problem, I think it's a bit counter-intuitive that powerclamp starts
to inject idle time when it's the *GPU* that is hot and using 50% of the CPU
for this idle stuff almost right away is certainly excessive. It also takes a
really long time after the temp has gone down for powerclamp to stop and during
this time the system is very sluggish.
I have to say, it seems this is not working as it should.

[Bug 1389077] Re: [HP ProBook 4530s] Intel Powerclamp is Slowing CPU

2014-11-09 Thread Lars Hansson
I have noticed the same thing. If I start playing a game in wine, say
ETS2, on my laptop (Intel HD 4000+Nvidia 820M) it runs fine for maybe a
minute and after that the FPS drops like a rock. The problem, if you
can call it that, is that the GPU temperature goes above 85C and thus
powerclamp kicks in and tries to reduce the temperature.

Addition: the CPU temperature never goes above 80C when this happens and
I don't think the GPU temperature is a problem, I think the driver or
GPU itself will slow down if it gets too hot (but I could be wrong).

[Bug 1389077] Re: [HP ProBook 4530s] Intel Powerclamp is Slowing CPU

2014-11-09 Thread Lars Hansson
So after some more tests I got some interesting results. The problem seems to
be that the NVidia card runs much hotter in Linux than in Windows. Playing
The Talos Principle on Steam in Ubuntu the GPU temperature reaches 95-97C
while in Windows 8 it hovers around 75-80C. Pretty much the same thing happens
when running ETS2 in Windows and in Wine on Ubuntu.
However, while idle (not running a game) Ubuntu has a lower GPU temperature
(~55C) than Windows (~66C).

I guess I'll be creating a new bug report about this.

[Bug 1309890] [NEW] No video with hybrid graphics Hd4000+820M

2014-04-19 Thread Lars Hansson
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop with hybrid graphics Intel HD4000 + Nvidia 820M and I get no
video after installing nvidia-331-updates.
X goes to low graphics mode.
This is working in 13.10 with nvidia-119-updates and nvidia-prime so this is a
regression.
X.org log attached.
It seems the 820M card can't find any attached display devices and tries to set
video mode NULL. On 14.04 the Validated MetaModes are NULL while on 13.10
they are nvidia-auto-select.

[Bug 1210077] Re: Screen freeze and garbled after resume from suspend

2014-02-25 Thread Lars Hansson
Also happen on HP Notebook 14 with a Intel HD 4000 and Nvidia 820M. When coming
back from suspend the screen is black. Switching to Vt1 and back gives you the
authentication box with garbled background. After authenticating you get the
desktop with a garbled wallpaper and some odd drawing artifacts in menus.
Logging out and back in fixes it.

[Bug 1022545] Re: Backport upstream bugfix $PreserveFQDN on not working properly

It seems this is still not fixed. I have rsyslog 5.8.11-2ubuntu2.2

from sshd, sudo, pam etc etc are only using the bare hostname.

[Bug 1191460] [NEW] $PreserveFQDN and $LocalHostName not always used

2013-06-15 Thread Lars Hansson
Public bug reported:

The $PreserveFQDn and $LocalHostname options are not always used when
configured. To be precise, they seem to only be used in messages from rsyslog
itself and not from other daemons or applications.
OS: Ubuntu 13.04
Rsyslog: 5.8.11-2ubuntu2.2

Steps to reproduce:

- Configure $PreserveFQDN or $LocalHostName
- Restart rsyslog
- Check in /var/log/syslog. Messages from rsyslog itself will use the fqdn or
the configured hostname, messags from sudo, sshd etc etc will only use the
plain hostname.

[Bug 941463] Re: No way to set empathy to automatically start on login

2012-05-29 Thread Lars Hansson
Using a startup file with empathy -h does not always correct this. I'm
running empathy -h from a startup file and the correct status is not
reflected in the messaging indicator. If I run empathy -h manually
after logging in the indicator is showing the correct status. It would
seem that running it from startup seems to work at random depending on
if the indicator is ready or not when empathy is run.
