Today I booted to the latest kernel by accident. I worked for couple of
hours on taks not requiring high HDD load, but high CPU load. Later I
ran eclipse and while building my projects (100+) the computer hard-
froze again :'-(. BTW I am update my system cca twice a day cause I want
to be on the

Now I've also prepared a debdiff for jaunty mesa that applies this
patch. When I boot the jaunty alpha5 live CD on 965 I do see the
rendering glitch (see screenshots attached above). However, I've not
been able to test this debdiff at all because I don't have jaunty
installed on my 965 machine
FWIW, this is 100% reproducible for me while opening a terminal and
running xdg-open . inside my normal home dir on a plain ext3 fs. On
this system I never mount any other file systems and I don't use any
external USB harddrives etc.

I used to have this problem but mvo's fix removed the bug for me (I also

I found this really strange but reproducible bug:
1. boot live CD (I used jaunty x86 alpha5 on a x64 machine)
2. open a terminal and run sudo su
3. run strace gdmsetup
4. if it succeeds without locking up the system, close gdmsetup with the close
button and then re-run the
Alex, I agree on your opinion in general but on the other side the new
pulseaudio enabled mixer is missing some important features. You can't
move streams between devices (as in pavucontrol) and there are the
problems Sebastien already mentioned. I hope these problems will be
solved upstream and
I've also been able to repro this on a much older desktop machine which
has an ATI radeon card attached over AGP. However, on this machine I had
to re-run strace gdmsetup around 15 times before it froze the machine.
I think it's a kernel issue.

I can also repro this bug on a third machine, it's a HP DV6000 laptop
with intel 965, 2GB RAM running intrepid using the .27-11 kernel. It was
a lot harder to get the bug to trigger on this machine, I had to re-run

I booted Fedora 10 on the first machine and I can't repro the issue
there. However, it seemed that gdmsetup isn't available on Fedora.
However, after some fiddling I found out that I can also repro the bug
on the intrepid machine by repeated by running the command strace
system-config-printer and
I did some additional testing now and it's not 100% reliable for me
either but it's not hard to repro either. Having gnome-terminal and some
other app up at the same time and then ALT-TABing betwwen that other app
and the terminal seems to make the bug trigger a bit more easily.

In previous versions of Ubuntu it was possible to reboot using the
System menu, but this is removed in jaunty. This change, in combination
with the fact that the fast-user-switch-applet is not accessible using
keyboard leaves the newbie user with poor accessibility.

FWIW, I tested the [unmodified] microdia bits (taken from git right
after commit b8dad85dcb7c182933c40356c8255ff924e21dad) together with the
jaunty 2.6.28-8-generic pre-release kernel and I was able to get video
from my LifeCam VX-6000 (PCI ID 045e:00f4).

I was able to get my VX-6000 to work on Jaunty using the Microdia driver
built from git. Looks like Ubuntu kernel devs wants the microdia driver
merged upstream though so they don't have to maintain it out-of-tree.

adobe flash player according to Sean's instructions. Seems to be working
fine so far. It seems Adobe has releases a new alpha version
(10.0.d21.1) of the plugin since though, so the instructions go as

I also found these nasty lines in my dmesg after testing with all three

I just got these updates (below) and then I rebooted. Now all my decorations
are gone.
Turn off compiz using System::Preferences::Appearence::Visual Effects == None
is a workaround.

FWIW, I got 10.0.15.3ubuntu3 from jaunty and I just got another one of these
npviewer.bin crashes. My bug report here:

fix deprecation warning
I found during testing that cherry picking the two patches from above alone
actually made another bug visible. Luckily that bug had also been fixed
upstream already so anyway, therefore it's also necessary to pickup this bugfix
from upstream:
