I found out about this bug from Digg this morning. After investigating,
I found that the load cycle on my harddrive was increasing rapidly, both
on AC and on battery. This sounds like a fairly serious bug, and should
be dealt with quickly. I've made the following changes, which seems to
have fixed

about. I haven't tested power consumption yet. My settings allow the
harddrive to switch off after 5min of inactivity when on battery, and

Having same issue, with only one cd, so far.
Lame is the encoder, all paranoia is disabled, first song rips, and begins
encoding, as soon as second song starts ripping - grip aborts with the same
output as above.
I can rip the whole cd without problem, but rip+encode causes grip to fail on
one
Interestingly enough, I no longer have this problem. I had encountered
the original problem after upgrading from Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) to Hardy
Heron (8.04). Since then, I had to wipe my hard drive and start over
with a fresh install of Hardy. After the re-install, I have not
experienced this

Neither of the pasuspender commands fixes my problems, nor does killall
pulseaudio. Yet I have the same symptoms: Totem and Rhythmbox work fine

The system is unacceptable slow, eg starting firefox takes between 50
and 90 seconds (on vista on the same machine 10 seconds), starting the
first gnome-terminal takes around 20 seconds.
I am using Ubuntu 8.10 rc1 on a HP-Compaq 6715s
CPU: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2
I have upgraded to (Kubuntu) Intrepid, and have seen a number of
application crashes in the few hours I have been using it but no Apport
yet. Do I need to enable this somehow?

It was indeed disabled. But somehow I can't quite consider this fixed
if that is the default. And I think that with KDE4, automatic crash
reports will be much needed :)

In Kubuntu 810, KDE has many many usability issues. A lot of these are
likely to be fixable during the next six months. It would be great if
you were more liberal than usual in accepting these fixes into Intrepid
due to the unusual circumstances of the new KDE 4.1. IMO
This bug is activated with quiet splash single in boot option. It is
not activated without quiet.

As the original reporter, I would like to point out that I have just
seen the bad behaviour in a fully updated Kubuntu 8.04, so I would not
consider this fixed.

When I initially boot up and log on, KNetworkManager does not have my
wireless network in the list of available networks. When I enter the
network details manually it sees it and connects. Repeated invocation

Konversation and Konsole use different key combinations for switching
between tabs. Konversation uses ALT+Left/Right and Konsole uses
SHIFT+left/right. Konqueror doesn't seem to support this at all using a
key combination. I know that this is a trivial issue, but
