backends. scanning must mork with scanimage and/or xsane before
some drivers seem to have problems with receiving more commands while the
scanner is busy.

If I had to guess, I would say there is a problem with the hplip scanner
driver that sometime causes simple-scan to crash. Unfortunately problems
with the scanner driver can easily take
Scanner Drivers sadly are troublesome with Linux and of bad quality
sometimes, down to the point where they might corrupt the whole usb
stack and affect other usb devices.
Could you try to use xsane or gscan2pdf instead of simple-scan to see if
the problem persists? If it does, the problem most

did you give the proper arguments to scanimage? did you try xsane?
If this is not really bothering you, and would rather not spend some time
working on this, it is probably not worth the trouble. That message is kind of
misleading...

I am not saying your scanner is broken. With hardware issue I mean it is
related to the cooperation between your scanner and Ubuntu and its
drivers. Using another scanner (other make and model!) would solve the
problem.
First step for locating the problem is to try xsane and to post the usb
id,
